Abstract:Optimizing passengers routes is crucial to design efficient transportation networks. Recent results show that optimal transport provides an efficient alternative to standard optimization methods. However, it is not yet clear if this formalism has empirical validity on engineering networks. We address this issue by considering different response functions -- quantities determining the interaction between passengers -- in the dynamics implementing the optimal transport formulation. Particularly, we couple passengers' fluxes by taking their sum or the sum of their squares. The first choice naturally reflects edges occupancy in transportation networks, however the second guarantees convergence to an optimal configuration of flows. Both modeling choices are applied to the Paris metro. We measure the extent of traffic bottlenecks and infrastructure resilience to node removal, showing that the two settings are equivalent in the congested transport regime, but different in the branched one. In the latter, the two formulations differ on how fluxes are distributed, with one function favoring routes consolidation, thus potentially being prone to generate traffic overload. Additionally, we compare our method to Dijkstra's algorithm to show its capacity to efficiently recover shortest-path-like graphs. Finally, we observe that optimal transport networks lie in the Pareto front drawn by the energy dissipated by passengers, and the cost to build the infrastructure.

Abstract:We consider a network equilibrium model (i.e. a combined model), which was proposed as an alternative to the classic four-step approach for travel forecasting in transportation networks. This model can be formulated as a convex minimization program. We extend the combined model to the case of the stable dynamics (SD) model in the traffic assignment stage, which imposes strict capacity constraints in the network. We propose a way to solve corresponding dual optimization problems with accelerated gradient methods and give theoretical guarantees of their convergence. We conducted numerical experiments with considered optimization methods on Moscow and Berlin networks.

Optimizing Evacuation Routes and Departure Schedules in View of Delay and Capacity of Intersections

Abstract:As an important part of emergency management, the regional evacuation process indeed involves movement of people by vehicles, which may generate large plenty of traffic trips during limited time. Efficient tools are needed to establish evacuation routing plans that identify routes and departure schedules for each group of vehicles to ensure safety and order. Most research works on the optimization of evacuation routing plans do not explicitly consider delay and capacity at intersections. However, in congested street networks, turning movement delays and capacity at intersections may be significant, and ignoring them may lead to the calculation of suboptimal or illogical routing plans. With turning delay and capacity at intersections as weights of node, the evacuation road network is expressed as a network with directional node-weight and the problem of finding optimal evacuation routing plans is described as a special quickest transshipment problem in such network. A heuristic algorithm is presented, which models capacity as a time series and finds suboptimal routing plans by searching dynamic routes with earliest arrival time, establishing the flows(vehicles) assigned to it and modifying capacity etc. iteratively. A numerical example is given.
An equilibrium-seeking search algorithm for integrating large-scale activity-based and dynamic traffic assignment models

Abstract:This paper proposes an iterative methodology to integrate large-scale behavioral activity-based models with dynamic traffic assignment models. The main novelty of the proposed approach is the decoupling of the two parts, allowing the ex-post integration of any existing model as long as certain assumptions are satisfied. A measure of error is defined to characterize a search space easily explorable within its boundaries. Within it, a joint distribution of the number of trips and travel times is identified as the equilibrium distribution, i.e., the distribution for which trip numbers and travel times are bound in the neighborhood of the equilibrium between supply and demand. The approach is tested on a medium-sized city of 400,000 inhabitants and the results suggest that the proposed iterative approach does perform well, reaching equilibrium between demand and supply in a limited number of iterations thanks to its perturbation techniques. Overall, 15 iterations are needed to reach values of the measure of error lower than 10%. The equilibrium identified this way is then validated against baseline distributions to demonstrate the goodness of the results.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the application of several gradient methods to the traffic assignment problem: we search equilibria in the stable dynamics model (Nesterov and De Palma, 2003) and the Beckmann model. Unlike the celebrated Frank--Wolfe algorithm widely used for the Beckmann model, these gradients methods solve the dual problem and then reconstruct a solution to the primal one. We deal with the universal gradient method, the universal method of similar triangles, and the method of weighted dual averages, and estimate their complexity for the problem. Due to the primal-dual nature of these methods, we use a duality gap in a stopping criterion. In particular, we present a novel way to reconstruct admissible flows (i.e.,\ meeting the capacity constraints and induced by flows on the paths) in the stable dynamics model, which provides us with a computable duality gap.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a dynamic equilibrium transportation problem. There is a fixed number of cars moving from origin to destination areas. Preferences for arrival times are expressed as a cost of arriving before or after the preferred time at the destination. Each driver aims to minimize the time spent during the trip, making the time spent a measure of cost. The chosen routes and departure times impact the network loading. The goal is to find an equilibrium distribution across departure times and routes. For a relatively simplified transportation model we show that an equilibrium traffic distribution can be found as a solution to a linear program. In earlier works linear programming formulations were only obtained for social optimum dynamic traffic assignment problems. We also discuss algorithmic approaches for solving the equilibrium problem using time-expanded networks.

Abstract:Global infrastructure robustness and local transport efficiency are critical requirements for transportation networks. However, since passengers often travel greedily to maximize their own benefit and trigger traffic jams, overall transportation performance can be heavily disrupted. We develop adaptation rules that leverage Optimal Transport theory to effectively route passengers along their shortest paths while also strategically tuning edge weights to optimize traffic. As a result, we enforce both global and local optimality of transport. We prove the efficacy of our approach on synthetic networks and on real data. Our findings on the International European highways suggest that thoughtfully devised routing schemes might help to lower car-produced carbon emissions.

Abstract:An equilibrium model for multiclass and multicriteria stochastic traffic networks with elastic demands was established using variational inequality method under assumptions that the weights of criteria are dependent of classes of travelers, and that cost functions are unsymmetrical.The model generalizes the equilibrium model for stochastic traffic networks of single class of travelers.It was proved that the continuity and strict monotonicity of mappings in the variational model ensure the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium flows,respectively.Generalized travel cost for a road section is affected by demands and traffic flows on other related road sections,and is a function of flows on all roads.This variational inequality is solved with a diagonal algorithm.An example was presented to show the feasibility of the proposed model and the algorithm.

Abstract:We consider two variational models for transport networks, an urban planning and a branched transport model, in which the degree of network complexity and ramification is governed by a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. Smaller $\varepsilon$ leads to finer ramification patterns, and we analyse how optimal network patterns in a particular geometry behave as $\varepsilon\to0$ by proving an energy scaling law. This entails providing constructions of near-optimal networks as well as proving that no other construction can do better. The motivation of this analysis is twofold. On the one hand, it provides a better understanding of the transport network models; for instance, it reveals qualitative differences in the ramification patterns of urban planning and branched transport. On the other hand, several examples of variational pattern analysis in the literature use an elegant technique based on relaxation and convex duality. Transport networks provide a relatively simple setting to explore variations and refinements of this technique, thereby increasing the scope of its applicability.

Abstract:We study optimal transport networks in spatial equilibrium. We develop a framework consisting of a neoclassical trade model with labor mobility in which locations are arranged on a graph. Goods must be shipped through linked locations, and transport costs depend on congestion and on the infrastructure in each link, giving rise to an optimal transport problem in general equilibrium. The optimal transport network is the solution to a social planner's problem of building infrastructure in each link. We provide conditions such that this problem is globally convex, guaranteeing its numerical tractability. We also study cases with increasing returns to transport technologies in which global convexity fails. We apply the framework to assess optimal investments and inefficiencies in the road networks of European countries.

A large neighbourhood based heuristic for two-echelon routing problems

Abstract:In this paper, we address two optimisation problems arising in the context of city logistics and two-level transportation systems. The two-echelon vehicle routing problem and the two-echelon location routing problem seek to produce vehicle itineraries to deliver goods to customers, with transits through intermediate facilities. To efficiently solve these problems, we propose a hybrid metaheuristic which combines enumerative local searches with destroy-and-repair principles, as well as some tailored operators to optimise the selections of intermediate facilities. We conduct extensive computational experiments to investigate the contribution of these operators to the search performance, and measure the performance of the method on both problem classes. The proposed algorithm finds the current best known solutions, or better ones, for 95% of the two-echelon vehicle routing problem benchmark instances. Overall, for both problems, it achieves high-quality solutions within short computing times. Finally, for future reference, we resolve inconsistencies between different versions of benchmark instances, document their differences, and provide them all online in a unified format.

Abstract:Transport networks with branching structures are observable not only in nature as in trees, blood vessels, etc. but also in efficiently designed transport systems such as used in railway configurations and postage delivery networks. Mathematically, such a branching transport network is modeled by an optimal transport path between two probability measures (representing the source and the target). An essential feature of such a transport path is to favor group transportation in a large amount. This article provides numerical simulation of optimal transport paths. We first construct an initial transport path, and then modify the path as much as possible by using both local and global minimization algorithms.

Abstract:In this study, we introduce and investigate a new class of split inverse problems, comprising a multidimensional parameter of evolution, which we call the multidimensional split variational inequality problem with multiple output sets. To demonstrate its applicability, we formulate the equilibrium flow of multidimensional traffic network models for an arbitrary number of locations. We define a multidimensional split Wardrop condition with multiple output sets and establish its equivalence with the formulated equilibrium flow of multidimensional traffic network models. We then establish the existence and uniqueness of equilibria for our proposed model. In addition, we propose a method for solving the introduced problem. We then validate our results using some numerical experiments.

Abstract:Designing and optimizing the structure of urban transportation networks is a challenging task. In this study, we propose a method inspired by optimal transport theory and the principle of economy of scale that uses little information in input to generate structures that are similar to those of public transportation networks. Contrarily to standard approaches, it does not assume any initial backbone network infrastructure, but rather extracts this directly from a continuous space using only a few origin and destination points. Analyzing a set of urban train, tram and subway networks, we find a noteworthy degree of similarity in several of the studied cases between simulated and real infrastructures. By tuning one parameter, our method can simulate a range of different subway, tram and train networks that can be further used to suggest possible improvements in terms of relevant transportation properties. Outputs of our algorithm provide naturally a principled quantitative measure of similarity between two networks that can be used to automatize the selection of similar simulated networks.

Hub Network Design and Discrete Location: Economies of Scale, Reliability and Service Level Considerations

Abstract:In this thesis, we study three related decision problems in location theory. The first part of the dissertation presents solution algorithms for the cycle hub location problem (CHLP), which seeks to locate p-hub facilities that are connected by means of a cycle, and to assign non-hub nodes to hubs so as to minimize the total cost of routing flows through the network. This problem is useful in modeling applications in transportation and telecommunications systems, where large setup costs on the links and reliability requirements make cycle topologies a prominent network architecture. We present a branch and-cut algorithm that uses a flow-based formulation and two families of mixed-dicut inequalities as a lower bounding procedure at nodes of the enumeration tree. We also introduce a greedy randomized adaptive search algorithm that is used to obtain initial upper bounds for the exact algorithm and to obtain feasible solutions for large-scale instances of the CHLP. Numerical results on a set of benchmark instances with up to 100 nodes confirm the efficiency of the proposed solution algorithms. In the second part of this dissertation, we study the modular hub location problem, which explicitly models the flow-dependent transportation costs using modular arc costs. It neither assumes a full interconnection between hub nodes nor a particular topological structure, instead it considers link activation decisions as part of the design. We propose a branch-and-bound algorithm that uses a Lagrangean relaxation to obtain lower and upper bounds at the nodes of the enumeration tree. Numerical results are reported for benchmark instances with up to 75 nodes. In the last part of this dissertation we study the dynamic facility location problem with service level constraints (DFLPSL). The DFLPSL seeks to locate a set of facilities with sufficient capacities over a planning horizon to serve customers at minimum cost while a service level requirement is met. This problem captures two important sources of stochasticity in facility location by considering known probability distribution functions associated with processing and routing times. We present a nonlinear mixed integer programming formulation and provide feasible solutions using two heuristic approaches. We present the results of computational experiments to analyze the impact and potential benefits of explicitly considering service level constraints when designing distribution systems.

Abstract:Routing optimization is a relevant problem in many contexts. Solving directly this type of optimization problem is often computationally unfeasible. Recent studies suggest that one can instead turn this problem into one of solving a dynamical system of equations, which can instead be solved efficiently using numerical methods. This results in enabling the acquisition of optimal network topologies from a variety of routing problems. However, the actual extraction of the solution in terms of a final network topology relies on numerical details which can prevent an accurate investigation of their topological properties. In this context, theoretical results are fully accessible only to an expert audience and ready-to-use implementations for non-experts are rarely available or insufficiently documented. In particular, in this framework, final graph acquisition is a challenging problem in-and-of-itself. Here we introduce a method to extract networks topologies from dynamical equations related to routing optimization under various parameters' settings. Our method is made of three steps: first, it extracts an optimal trajectory by solving a dynamical system, then it pre-extracts a network and finally, it filters out potential redundancies. Remarkably, we propose a principled model to address the filtering in the last step, and give a quantitative interpretation in terms of a transport-related cost function. This principled filtering can be applied to more general problems such as network extraction from images, thus going beyond the scenarios envisioned in the first step. Overall, this novel algorithm allows practitioners to easily extract optimal network topologies by combining basic tools from numerical methods, optimization and network theory. Thus, we provide an alternative to manual graph extraction which allows a grounded extraction from a large variety of optimal topologies.

Abstract:We consider a first-order dynamical system for solving inverse quasi-variational inequalities in finite dimensional spaces. Through an explicit time discrete version of the proposed dynamical system, we investigate the linear convergence of a projection algorithm under suitable conditions of parameters. Moreover, we investigate the application of inverse quasi-variational inequalities in traffic assignment problem and network equilibrium control problem. The numerical experiments for these practical problems confirm the linear convergence of the theoretical part. In particular, the obtained results provide a positive answer to an open question posted by S. Dey and S. Reich in Optimization, DOI: 10.1080/02331934.2023.2173525 (2023).

Scaling Algorithms for Unbalanced Transport Problems

Abstract:This article introduces a new class of fast algorithms to approximate variational problems involving unbalanced optimal transport. While classical optimal transport considers only normalized probability distributions, it is important for many applications to be able to compute some sort of relaxed transportation between arbitrary positive measures. A generic class of such "unbalanced" optimal transport problems has been recently proposed by several authors. In this paper, we show how to extend the, now classical, entropic regularization scheme to these unbalanced problems. This gives rise to fast, highly parallelizable algorithms that operate by performing only diagonal scaling (i.e. pointwise multiplications) of the transportation couplings. They are generalizations of the celebrated Sinkhorn algorithm. We show how these methods can be used to solve unbalanced transport, unbalanced gradient flows, and to compute unbalanced barycenters. We showcase applications to 2-D shape modification, color transfer, and growth models.

Abstract:In this paper we consider multi-stages traffic assignment with several demand layers, user types and network types. We consider two stages: demand matrix calculation (Entropy Wilson's model) and traffic assignment models (Beckmann or Nesterov--de Palma). For the traffic assignment stage we use dual reformulation and combine these stages as a saddle-point problem (convex-concave). Then we discuss how one can solve this problem numerically.
