Abstract:We prove an extensionality theorem for the "type-in-type" dependent type theory with Sigma-types. We suggest that the extensional equality type be identified with the logical equivalence relation on the free term model of type theory.

Abstract:We give a type system in which the universe of types is closed by reflection into it of the logical relation defined externally by induction on the structure of types. This contribution is placed in the context of the search for a natural, syntactic construction of the extensional equality type (Tait [1995], Altenkirch [1999], Coquand [2011], Licata and Harper [2012], Martin-Lof [2013]). The system is presented as an extension of lambda-*, the terminal pure type system in which the universe of all types is a type. The universe inconsistency is then removed by the usual method of stratification into levels. We give a set-theoretic model for the stratified system. We conjecture that Strong Normalization holds as well.

An extended type system with lambda-typed lambda-expressions (extended version)

Abstract:We present the type system $\mathtt{d}$, an extended type system with lambda-typed lambda-expressions. It is related to type systems originating from the Automath project. $\mathtt{d}$ extends existing lambda-typed systems by an existential abstraction operator as well as propositional operators. $\beta$-reduction is extended to also normalize negated expressions using a subset of the laws of classical negation, hence $\mathtt{d}$ is normalizing both proofs and formulas which are handled uniformly as functional expressions. $\mathtt{d}$ is using a reflexive typing axiom for a constant $\tau$ to which no function can be typed. Some properties are shown including confluence, subject reduction, uniqueness of types, strong normalization, and consistency. We illustrate how, when using $\mathtt{d}$, due to its limited logical strength additional axioms must be added both for negation and for the mathematical structures whose deductions are to be formalized. Several appendices deal with extensions and variations of the proposed system.

Coherence of strict equalities in dependent type theories

Abstract:We study the coherence and conservativity of extensions of dependent type theories by additional strict equalities. By considering notions of congruences and quotients of models of type theory, we reconstruct Hofmann's proof of the conservativity of Extensional Type Theory over Intensional Type Theory. We generalize these methods to type theories without the Uniqueness of Identity Proofs principle, such as variants of Homotopy Type Theory, by introducing a notion of higher congruence over models of type theory. Our definition of higher congruence is inspired by Brunerie's type-theoretic definition of weak $\infty$-groupoid. For a large class of type theories, we reduce the problem of the conservativity of equational extensions to more tractable acyclicity conditions.

Towards coherence theorems for equational extensions of type theories

Abstract:We study the conservativity of extensions by additional strict equalities of dependent type theories (and more general second-order generalized algebraic theories). The conservativity of Extensional Type Theory over Intensional Type Theory was proven by Hofmann. Our goal is to generalize such results to type theories without the Uniqueness of Identity Proofs principles, such as variants of Homotopy Type Theory. For this purpose, we construct what is essentially the infinity-congruence on the base theory that is freely generated by the considered equations. This induces a factorization of any equational extension, whose two factors can be studied independently. We conjecture that the first factor is always an equivalence when the base theory is well-behaved. We prove that the second factor is an equivalence when the infinity-congruence is 0-truncated.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we define intensional models for the classical theory of types, thus arriving at an intensional type logic ITL. Intensional models generalize Henkin's general models and have a natural definition. As a class they do not validate the axiom of Extensionality. We give a cut-free sequent calculus for type theory and show completeness of this calculus with respect to the class of intensional models via a model existence theorem. After this we turn our attention to applications. Firstly, it is argued that, since ITL is truly intensional, it can be used to model ascriptions of propositional attitude without predicting logical omniscience . In order to illustrate this a small fragment of English is defined and provided with an ITL semantics. Secondly, it is shown that ITL models contain certain objects that can be identified with possible worlds . Essential elements of modal logic become available within classical type theory once the axiom of Extensionality is given up.

A Reflection Principle for Potential Infinite Models of Type Theory

Abstract:Denotational models of type theory, such as set-theoretic, domain-theoretic, or category-theoretic models use (actual) infinite sets of objects in one way or another. The potential infinite, seen as an extensible finite, requires a dynamic understanding of the infinite sets of objects. It follows that the type $nat$ cannot be interpreted as a set of all natural numbers, $\lbrack\!\lbrack nat \rbrack\!\rbrack = \mathbb{N}$, but as an increasing family of finite sets $\mathbb{N}_i = \{0, \dots, i-1\}$. Any reference to $\lbrack\!\lbrack nat \rbrack\!\rbrack$, either by the formal syntax or by meta-level concepts, must be a reference to a (sufficiently large) set $\mathbb{N}_i$. We present the basic concepts for interpreting a fragment of the simply typed $\lambda$-calculus within such a dynamic model. A type $\varrho$ is thereby interpreted as a process, which is formally a factor system together with a limit of it. A factor system is very similar to a direct or an inverse system, and its limit is also defined by a universal property. It is crucial to recognize that a limit is not necessarily an unreachable end beyond the process. Rather, it can be regarded as an intermediate state within the factor system, which can still be extended. The logical type $bool$ plays an important role, which we interpret classically as the set $\{true, false\}$. We provide an interpretation of simply typed $\lambda$-terms in these factor systems and limits. The main result is a reflection principle, which states that an element in the limit has a ``full representative'' at a sufficiently large stage within the factor system. For propositions, that is, terms of type $bool$, this implies that statements about the limit are true if and only if they are true at that sufficiently large stage.

Abstract:Classical (or Boolean) type theory is the type theory that allows the type inference $\sigma \to \bot) \to \bot => \sigma$ (the type counterpart of double-negation elimination), where $\sigma$ is any type and $\bot$ is absurdity type. This paper first presents a denotational semantics for a simplified version of Parigot's lambda-mu calculus, a premier example of classical type theory. In this semantics the domain of each type is divided into infinitely many ranks and contains not only the usual members of the type at rank 0 but also their negative, conjunctive, and disjunctive shadows in the higher ranks, which form an infinitely nested Boolean structure. Absurdity type $\bot$ is identified as the type of truth values. The paper then presents a new deduction system of classical type theory, a sequent calculus called the classical type system (CTS), which involves the standard logical operators such as negation, conjunction, and disjunction and thus reflects the discussed semantic structure in a more straightforward fashion.

Abstract:Filinski constructed a symmetric lambda-calculus consisting of expressions and continuations which are symmetric, and functions which have duality. In his calculus, functions can be encoded to expressions and continuations using primitive operators. That is, the duality of functions is not derived in the calculus but adopted as a principle of the calculus. In this paper, we propose a simple symmetric lambda-calculus corresponding to the negation-free natural deduction based bilateralism in proof-theoretic semantics. In our calculus, continuation types are represented as not negations of formulae but formulae with negative polarity. Function types are represented as the implication and but-not connectives in intuitionistic and paraconsistent logics, respectively. Our calculus is not only simple but also powerful as it includes a call-value calculus corresponding to the call-by-value dual calculus invented by Wadler. We show that mutual transformations between expressions and continuations are definable in our calculus to justify the duality of functions. We also show that every typable function has dual types. Thus, the duality of function is derived from bilateralism.

Abstract:Parametricity allows the transfer of proofs between different implementations of the same data structure. The lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory is an extension of the lambda-calculus with dependent types and user-defined rewrite rules. It is a logical framework, used to exchange proofs between different proof systems. We define an interpretation of theories of the lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory, inspired by parametricity. Such an interpretation allows to transfer proofs for free between theories that feature the notions of proposition and proof, when the source theory can be embedded into the target theory.

Simply-typed constant-domain modal lambda calculus I: distanced beta reduction and combinatory logic

Abstract:A system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is developed that combines modal logic and simply-typed lambda calculus, and that generalizes the system studied by Montague and Gallin. Whereas Montague and Gallin worked with Church's simple theory of types, the system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is developed in the typed base theory most commonly used today, namely the simply-typed lambda calculus. Further, the system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is controlled by a parameter $\upsilon$ which allows more options for state types and state variables than is present in Montague and Gallin. A main goal of the paper is to establish the basic metatheory of $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$: (i) a completeness theorem is proven for $\beta\eta$-reduction, and (ii) an Andrews-like characterization of Henkin models in terms of combinatory logic is given; and this involves a distanced version of $\beta$-reduction and a $\mathsf{BCKW}$-like basis rather than $\mathsf{SKI}$-like basis. Further, conservation of the maximal system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\omega}$ over $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is proven, and expressibility of $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\omega}$ in $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is proven; thus these modal logics are highly expressive. Similar results are proven for the relation between $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\omega}$ and $\boldsymbol\lambda$, the corresponding ordinary simply-typed lambda calculus. This answers a question of Zimmerman in the simply-typed setting. In a companion paper this is extended to Church's simple theory of types.

Abstract:We refine a model for linear logic based on two well-known ingredients: games and simulations. We have already shown that usual simulation relations form a sound notion of morphism between games; and that we can interpret all linear logic in this way. One particularly interesting point is that we interpret multiplicative connectives by synchronous operations on games. We refine this work by giving computational contents to our simulation relations. To achieve that, we need to restrict to intuitionistic linear logic. This allows to work in a constructive setting, thus keeping a computational content to the proofs. We then extend it by showing how to interpret some of the additional structure of the exponentials. To be more precise, we first give a denotational model for the typed lambda-calculus; and then give a denotational model for the differential lambda-calculus of Ehrhard and Regnier. Both this models are proved correct constructively.

Abstract:Dependently typed proof assistant rely crucially on definitional equality, which relates types and terms that are automatically identified in the underlying type theory. This paper extends type theory with definitional functor laws, equations satisfied propositionally by a large class of container-like type constructors $F : \mathrm{Type} \to \mathrm{Type}$, equipped with a $\mathrm{map}_{F} : (A \to B) \to F\,A \to F\,B$, such as lists or trees. Promoting these equations to definitional ones strengthens the theory, enabling slicker proofs and more automation for functorial type constructors. This extension is used to modularly justify a structural form of coercive subtyping, propagating subtyping through type formers in a map-like fashion. We show that the resulting notion of coercive subtyping, thanks to the extra definitional equations, is equivalent to a natural and implicit form of subsumptive subtyping. The key result of decidability of type-checking in a dependent type system with functor laws for lists has been entirely mechanized in Coq. This is the extended version of the work with the same name published at ESOP'24.

Intersection Types for the Computational lambda-Calculus

Abstract:We study polymorphic type assignment systems for untyped lambda-calculi with effects, based on Moggi's monadic approach. Moving from the abstract definition of monads, we introduce a version of the call-by-value computational lambda-calculus based on Wadler's variant with unit and bind combinators, and without let. We define a notion of reduction for the calculus and prove it confluent, and also we relate our calculus to the original work by Moggi showing that his untyped metalanguage can be interpreted and simulated in our calculus. We then introduce an intersection type system inspired to Barendregt, Coppo and Dezani system for ordinary untyped lambda-calculus, establishing type invariance under conversion, and provide models of the calculus via inverse limit and filter model constructions and relate them. We prove soundness and completeness of the type system, together with subject reduction and expansion properties. Finally, we introduce a notion of convergence, which is precisely related to reduction, and characterize convergent terms via their types.

$T$-convexity, Weakly Immediate Types, and $T$-$λ$-Spherical Completions of o-minimal Structures

Abstract:Let $T$ be the theory of an o-minimal field, and $T_{\mathrm{convex}}$ the theory of its expansion by a predicate $\mathcal{O}$ for a non-trivial $T$-convex valuation ring. For $\lambda$ an uncountable cardinal, say that a unary type $p(x)$ over a model of $T_{\mathrm{convex}}$ is \emph{$\lambda$-bounded weakly immediate} if its cut is defined by an empty intersection of fewer than $\lambda$ many nested valuation balls. Call an elementary extension \emph{$\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible} if it is obtained as a transfinite composition of extensions each generated by one element whose type is $\lambda$-bounded weakly immediate. I show that $\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible extensions do not extend the residue-field sort and that any two wim-constructible extensions can be amalgamated in an extension which is again $\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible over both. A consequence is that given an uncountable cardinal $\lambda$, every model of $T_{\mathrm{convex}}$ has a unique-up-to-non-unique-isomorphism $\lambda$-spherically complete $\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible extension. We call this extension the $T$-$\lambda$-spherical completion. When $T$ is power bounded wim-constructible extensions are just the immediate extensions. I discuss the example of power bounded theories expanded by $\exp$.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, I will develop a $\lambda $-term calculus, $\lambda ^{2Int}$, for a bi-intuitionistic logic and discuss its implications for the notions of sense and denotation of derivations in a bilateralist setting. Thus, I will use the Curry–Howard correspondence, which has been well-established between the simply typed $\lambda $-calculus and natural deduction systems for intuitionistic logic, and apply it to a bilateralist proof system displaying two derivability relations, one for proving and one for refuting. The basis will be the natural deduction system of Wansing’s bi-intuitionistic logic 2Int, which I will turn into a term-annotated form. Therefore, we need a type theory that extends to a two-sorted typed $\lambda $-calculus. I will present such a term-annotated proof system for 2Int and prove a Dualization Theorem relating proofs and refutations in this system. On the basis of these formal results, I will argue that this gives us interesting insights into questions about sense and denotation as well as synonymy and identity of proofs from a bilateralist point of view.

Abstract:A fundamental theme in automata theory is regular languages of words and trees, and their many equivalent definitions. Salvati has proposed a generalization to regular languages of simply typed $\lambda$-terms, defined using denotational semantics in finite sets. We provide here some evidence for its robustness. First, we give an equivalent syntactic characterization that naturally extends the seminal work of Hillebrand and Kanellakis connecting regular languages of words and syntactic $\lambda$-definability. Second, we show that any finitary extensional model of the simply typed $\lambda$-calculus, when used in Salvati's definition, recognizes exactly the same class of languages of $\lambda$-terms as the category of finite sets does. The proofs of these two results rely on logical relations and can be seen as instances of a more general construction of a categorical nature, inspired by previous categorical accounts of logical relations using the gluing construction.
