Abstract:In order to resolve the problem that a PID controller performance may decrease when the operating conditions changes if the system condition changes.This paper presents a special performance evaluation for the PID controller,optimization and control approach,namely:PID loop evaluation and optimization algorithms.The algorithm uses the system closed-loop input and output data,assesses PID controller performance according to MVC(minimum variance control)benchmark,finds the optimized PID parameters for the time-varying systems at the base of MVC;the assessment process The results with the real system output variance to compare PID parameters on-line optimization as a basis for judgments,when the actual system performance below a.certain standard time of the controller optimization.The assessment process will take the new output variance to compare with the real system output variance,the result become the basis for judgments.When the actual system performance below a certain standard,the algorithms will change the PID parameters as a optimization process.At the whole algorithm,the monitoring of input and output data lasting in the whole process become a monitoring for the PID control system.Simulation results show the validity of this method.In the context,if the system have a abrupt or gradual changing,the system can automatically evaluate and optimize the implementation to achieve stability after 1300 seconds.The cycle of evaluation and optimization algorithm for realistic performance can assess and monitor the system at the same time.with certain conditions,with a certain standard this algorithm can optimize the PID parameters and ultimately make the system have the selfmonitoring and selfassessment capacity.

Abstract:This paper applies the simulated annealing algorithm for PID controllers to deal with those motion control systems having constant disturbance. The main goal is to eliminate the steady state error of the system and minimize the integral time absolute error (ITAE) performance index. Three PID controllers, the ordinary PID controller, the increment PID (IPID) controller and the integral separation PID (ISPID) controller are compared. The result shows different controllers fulfill different control requirements.

Abstract:Identification based PID tuning is studied. The proposed approach consists of the identification of linear or non linear process model and model based control design. The identification test can be performed in both open loop and closed-loop. The so-called ASYM method is used to solve the identification problem. The method identifies a low order process model with a quantification of model errors (uncertainty). The PID tuning is based on internal model control (IMC) tuning rules. Two case studies will be performed to demonstrate the methodology. The first one is the adaptive control of the dissolved oxygen of a bioreactor; the second one is the nonlinear PID control of a pH process.

Abstract:PID controllers have been widely used in many industries. They can provide robust and reliable performance for most systems. However, it is very important to tune the PID parameters properly. There is a large variety of methods for tuning the PID parameters. But none of them can cope with the wide system uncertainties. The main motivation in this paper is to present a design scheme of controllers using the LS-SVM which achieve to self-tune the parameter. This method used LS-SVM to identify the predictive model of the system off-line, then linearized the model in local on-line for reducing computation, and combined the general minimum variance to self-tune the PID parameters. The controller has a better effect than the conventional PID controller. Simulation study shows the effectiveness and good performance.

Abstract:In view of the problem primarily in the paper that it is very difficult for routine PID controllers to perform the parameters tuning on-line and the disadvantage that doesn't make the appropriate adjustments accompanying object changes. The adaptive control is used in PID controllers and a self-adaptive PID controller is synthesized.with the help of the MATLAB of the control box and its instruction,The computer simulation is performed greatly.The simulation results show that this controller provides an evidently improved control capability,compared with routine PID controller.

Abstract:Autotuners for PID controllers have been commercially available since 1981. These controllers automate some tasks normally performed by an instrument engineer. The autotuners include methods for extracting process dynamics from experiments and control design methods. They may be able to decide when to use PI or PID control. To make systems with a higher degree of automation it is desirable to also automate tasks normally performed by process engineers. To do so, it is necessary to provide the controllers with reasoning capabilities. This seems technically feasible with the increased computing power that is now available in single-loop controllers. This paper describes some features that may be included in the next generation of PID controllers.

Abstract:This paper describes the design of a practical auto-tuning and adaptive single-input-single-output (SISO) PID controller (AAC). The AAC can control processes with stable and unstable zeros, processes with an integrator, unstable processes and standard aperiodic processes. It uses an explicit identification with a recursive parameter estimation of a second-order with delay model. The regulator tuning methods are based on an approximate minimization of the ITAE criterion by applying pole-zero cancellation, phase margin and maximum peak resonance specifications, with special considerations for delays, unstable zeros and poles. The data filtering, the identification, the tuning mechanism and the supervisory shell are described. Useful guidelines for PI and PID tuning for SISO processes are given. The AAC performances are compared using a benchmark test with commercial adaptive PID controllers: Foxboro 760C, Fisher DPR 910 and Leeds & Northrup Electromax V.

Abstract:Applications of parameter-adaptive (or self-tuning) digital controllers show that there is a need for adaptive PID-control algorithms in practice. This contribution presents a new parameter-adaptive PID-controller, which is based on an explicit combination of a two-stage square-root parameter estimator and a numerical controller parameter optimization procedure. It can be applied to a wide range of dynamic processes as well as to the self-tuning of controller parameters during the implementation phase, as for continuing adaptive control. The adaptive control algorithms are implemented on a microprocessor-based controller. Application results are shown for self-tuning control of an air conditioner.

Abstract:Abstract Proportional, Integral and Derivative (PID) controllers are widely employed in control applications. The Ziegler-Nichols method is one of the most widely used PID parameter tuning methods, even though it is known to have some drawbacks. Automatic or self-tuning of PID controllers has been extensively studied. However, the stability of the resulting system with the PID controller is not considered in most PID auto-tuning methods and the tuned PID parameters may not guarantee the stability of the control system after changes in the system. This paper presents a new method to design discrete-time stabilizing PID controllers with time varying (or adaptive) gains for a special class of MIMO linear systems. The technique, based on appropriate choices of control Lyapunov functions (CLF), determines the optimal values of the parameters, with respect to the CLF choice, which guarantee the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium of the considered system.

Abstract:Engineering systems’ adaptability to the unknown and unexpectedly changing equip-ment condition and environmental data is provided artificially by equipping the main loop of control with the adaptor loop. The paper characterizes the current status of re-search and practical studies in the field. As shown for estimation and control systems, the adaptor’s task is to ensure the efficient and conforming solution of the following three problems. Problem 1 is the quickest change point detection in the acting model relative to the previous model. Problem 2 is the unbiased and adequately quick identification of the acting model. Problem 3 is the computationally efficient modifying the feedback in the main loop of control. The paper characterizes the current status of research and prac-tical studies in the field over many publications and some author’s developments. Among the latter, there is the active principle of adaptation for model identification in the class of linear time-invariant control systems.

Abstract:Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are undoubtedly the most employed controllers in industry, and they have significantly contributed to the impact of control systems in society. This book is a very welcome addition to the PID control literature as it aims to reduce the gap between theory and practice and foster technology transfer from academia to industry. Indeed, the topics included in the book are useful for students and practitioners in different fields to better understand how to design a PID controller and address the many issues that are faced in practice. The only prerequisites that are assumed of the reader are a basic knowledge of feedback control systems and dynamic systems (for example, transfer functions, frequency response, and state space models). The main feature of this book is the presence of many detailed worked examples that help the reader understand the underlying concepts. The reader is guided in developing Matlab scripts (also available from the book's associated website) that help to clearly outline the sequence of steps associated with each design technique. There are also study questions, provided after each section, designed to evaluate whether the reader fully understands the chapter topics. Numerical and simulation problems are also presented at the end of each chapter. Overall, the pedagogical approach followed in this text is appreciated and commendable. This book is suitable for those students and practitioners who have been exposed to a single control course and want to learn more about PID controllers or are asked to work with them in an industrial setting. It is worth emphasizing that, due to the inclusion of resonant controllers and a chapter dedicated to unmanned aerial vehicles, this book addresses general areas of application and is not only limited to process control problems. In summary, this book is a very good reference for those who want to deepen their knowledge about PID control without requiring-a strong background in control theory. Further advancements in the field can then be learned from other more advanced books once the basic concepts have been mastered.

Abstract:Designing and tuning a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller appears to be conceptually intuitive, but can be hard in practice, if multiple (and often conflicting) objectives such as short transient and high stability are to be achieved. Usually, initial designs obtained by all means need to be adjusted repeatedly through computer simulations until the closed-loop system performs or compromises as desired. This stimulates the development of "intelligent" tools that can assist engineers to achieve the best overall PID control for the entire operating envelope. This development has further led to the incorporation of some advanced tuning algorithms into PID hardware modules. Corresponding to these developments, this paper presents a modern overview of functionalities and tuning methods in patents, software packages and commercial hardware modules. It is seen that many PID variants have been developed in order to improve transient performance, but standardising and modularising PID control are desired, although challenging. The inclusion of system identification and "intelligent" techniques in software based PID systems helps automate the entire design and tuning process to a useful degree. This should also assist future development of "plug-and-play" PID controllers that are widely applicable and can be set up easily and operate optimally for enhanced productivity, improved quality and reduced maintenance requirements.

Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new PID control technique based on auto-tuning neurons for multivariable systems. The main difference between an auto-tuning neuron and a general neuron is that there are adjustable parameters of the activation function used in an auto-tuning neuron. In this paper, a modified hyperbolic tangent function is used as the activation function of an auto-tuning neuron, which provides two adjustable parameters to flexibly determine the magnitude and the shape of function. We then use such auto-tuning neurons to find gains of the multivariable PID controller, which is tuned on-line according to certain adaptation laws. Finally, two illustrative examples will be used to compare the performance by using our proposed method and other methods.

Abstract:Aiming at the parameter tuning issue of PID control for common second-order-delay system in industrial processes,the adaptive PID tuning method based on real number encoding genetic algorithm is proposed.By adopting the advantage of fast speed global optimization which is provided by genetic algorithm,the parameters of the controller are encoded in real numbers;the performance index is structured into relevant fitness function.With adaptive mutation probability and repeated genetic operation,optimal parameters for tuning controller are obtained,the result of simulation shows the anti-interference capability of controller is excellent.

Abstract:Adaptive interaction algorithm,whose advantage is easy to implement,can perform gradient descent of control pa- rameters without any knowledge of plant.Based on adaptive interaction theory and classical PID controlling theory,an adap- tive interaction PID controller is developed.The good perform- ance of adaptive interaction PID is verified by the application of hydraulic edger screwdown system in Baosteel 2050 rough mill. The results show that the adaptive interaction PID controller achieves better performance than the classic one,especially,in the circumstance of foreign disturbance and working condition variation.

Abstract:With its three-term functionality offering treatment of both transient and steady-state responses, proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control provides a generic and efficient solution to real-world control problems. The wide application of PID control has stimulated and sustained research and development to "get the best out of PID", and "the search is on to find the next key technology or methodology for PID tuning". This article presents remedies for problems involving the integral and derivative terms. PID design objectives, methods, and future directions are discussed. Subsequently, a computerized simulation-based approach is presented, together with illustrative design results for first-order, higher order, and nonlinear plants. Finally, we discuss differences between academic research and industrial practice, so as to motivate new research directions in PID control.

Abstract:A novel supervised receding horizon optimal scheme is presented for discrete time systems in the process control. In the employing level, PID controller is used, while the receding horizon approach is applied to the optimized level. The considered problem is to optimize the employing level PID controller parameters through minimizing a generalized predictive control criterion. Compared with a fixed parameters PID controller, the proposed algorithm provides well performance over a range of operating condition.
