Abstract:In March 2015, the journal Environmental Earth Sciences published a special issue (volume 73, issue 6; currently, with over 17,860 online accesses and 515 citations) on the topic ''sustainability and water resources'' honouring EurGeol José Martins Carvalho's long career over five decades. He recently left us after a severe healthiness battle, fighting like a knight from 2022 to January 31, 2023. Based on sensitive memories, this essay aims to outline the foremost professionals' roots and milestones, focusing on the legacy of the extraordinary career of José Martins Carvalho (1943–2023) as a professional hydrogeologist, emeritus professor and groundwater researcher. He had an exceptional career spanning over 57 years in multidisciplinary environmental hydrogeology practice in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America. The core of his vivid and long professional journey was to support hydrogeology's training, teaching, and research to solve societal issues and challenges through an environmental, sustainable and geoethical approach. José Martins Carvalho is an example and inspiration for future generations of geologists, engineers, environmental scientists, and groundwater-related practitioners, including natural hazards researchers and social geoscientists.

Abstract:abstract: This essay explores the tension between pursuing meaningful work in instruction librarianship and the realities of working in a society in which many jobs provide little fulfillment or pleasure, or, as the journalist Sarah Jaffe puts it, “Work won’t love you back.” Drawing on a recent conference keynote by Anne Helen Petersen, C. Wright Mills’s conception of sociological imagination, and an ecological model of teacher agency, I propose that one way librarians can sustain their teaching practices and preserve their well-being is by actively investigating how social structures and relationships influence their teaching roles.

Abstract:On February 2 2023, one of the guiding lights in the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for more than four decades, David E. Yoder, passed away at the age of 90. A voracious reader and gifted storyteller, David was particularly fond of a quote from George Bernard Shaw's Back to Methuselah, "You see things; and you say 'Why?' but I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'" That vision led him to take on multiple leadership roles and influence the field of AAC in multiple ways. He played a pivotal role in establishing both the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC) and the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (USSAAC). Additionally, he chaired the panel for the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR)'s inaugural Consensus Validation Conference on AAC, advocated for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association to recognize AAC within the profession's scope of practice, and served as the first editor for the Augmentative and Alternative Communication journal. In this tribute, we describe David's diverse and unique contributions to improving the lives of people with communication challenges with a focus on some of his central insights and actions.

Abstract:This paper grows out of my academic journey from a long period teaching and researching geography to recently taking on the role of an educational developer. For most staff, their primary allegiance is to their discipline. In my experience, educational developers often fail to recognize and value staff's focus on their discipline ‐ or see it as an obstacle to improving the quality of their teaching. My central argument is that, to have a significant impact on the broad mass of staff, educational developers should work with these discipline‐based concerns. I detail how this can be achieved, drawing on much good practice from the UK, Australia and North America. Approaches include recognizing particular curricular and pedagogic concerns of the disciplines; helping staff to develop as scholars in the teaching of their discipline; for some staff to develop careers in the teaching of their discipline; and for educational developers to work with disciplinary organizations to promote discipline‐based teaching initiatives.

Abstract:Though there is a well-established body of research in the field of teacher professional development, it is characterised by a real dearth of any detailed historical analysis. This paper seeks to address this gap, by offering a new historical analysis of a case study of the evolution of organised teacher professional development in England and Wales during the twentieth century. Its approach is hoped to open up the wider debate and to contribute to a fuller understanding of the basis for those questions and dilemmas about teacher professional development that have long exercised teachers, professional educators and policy-makers – questions which turn on fundamental issues of priorities and purpose, funding, scale of teacher engagement, control and reach. The paper is in three main parts. Firstly, the scope of the case study is outlined with key stages in the evolution of teacher professional development in England and Wales identified. Secondly, four themes from the data which characterised this evolution are discussed. These include the restricted engagement of teachers relative to the whole teacher population; limited funding; the highly centralised control over provision for teacher professional development through Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMI); and a highly selective and restrictive access to provision by teachers. It is argued that these key characteristics helped to shape a particular culture and ideology of teacher professional development which was dependent on a select cadre of elite teachers for the dissemination and modelling of what was regarded as good practice, so as to improve their colleagues’ performance – the elite excelled while the majority needed to be saved from mediocrity. The particular ideology underlying this model is conceptualised as one of ‘excellence and salvation’. Finally, it is argued that the key issues identified in this story (the restricted engagement of teachers; limited funding; highly centralised control; and ideologies of excellence) raise important generic questions for the field of teacher professional development more widely as well as framing future historical analysis of teacher professional development.

Abstract:James E. Nickum, Editor-in-Chief, 2007–present The field of water has lost a giant. Malin Falkenmark, who passed away last December, was with IWRA from its infancy, as a director on the first and third Executive Boards in 1972–74 and 1980–82, Chair of the Membership Committee in 1982–85, and Vice-President in 1986–88. More recently, she served as a long-time member of the Editorial Board, and always had good things to say about the Best Paper candidates she reviewed. During that half century, she left the world, among others, the Falkenmark water stress index (with Jan Lundqvist and Carl Widstrand, 1989), hydrosolidarity (1998), and the distinction between green and blue water (with Johan Rockström, 2006), as well as numerous contributions to Water International , listed at the end of this memorial. Those items from this journal will be available for free access until the end of 2024.

Abstract:In keeping with the tradition of past awardees of the International Paleolimnology Association Rick Battarbee Lifetime Achievement Award , I provide this career retrospective to acknowledge the outstanding students and other collaborators I have enjoyed working with and to reflect on some of the lessons I learned over the last four decades. Whilst several examples are given, I focus mainly on some early lake acidification research, as those projects provided a foundation for many subsequent applied paleolimnological studies. In addition, given that I have worked in the Arctic continuously throughout my career, that program is highlighted, partly to show how concepts developed in polar regions can be transferred, with appropriate modifications, to lakes in other climates. I emphasize the importance of inter-personal relationships (i.e., work well with others and they will work well with you) and the power of inter-disciplinary research teams. I conclude by providing some advice for early career researchers, such as the critical role of effective science communication. My view is that paleolimnology has already made many substantial contributions to a wide spectrum of environmental and other issues, but the best is yet to come.

I had the good fortune and privilege of having Michael Fisher as my teacher, supervisor, mentor and friend. During my years as a scientist, teacher and supervisor of about one hundred students and post docs I found myself innumerable times realizing that I am following or at least trying to follow Michaels example. These pages are my attempt to convey recollections of my association with Michael, focusing on how he served as an example for me.

Abstract:As readers know, <i>The Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas for Middle and High School Teachers</i> publishes articles of interest to middle level and high school teachers and administrators, as well as post-secondary education faculty members and their students. Often, as is the case in many academic journals, this means that teachers themselves are participants in or subjects of research, but it is not, ultimately, the voice of teachers that speaks most authoritatively. Instead, too often, it is the voice of researchers. Thus, as guest coeditors of this special issue, we are a group of educators brought together by a shared goal: to privilege teachers' voices in educational research.

Abstract:Academic writing in Higher Education (HE) is contested practice freighted with meaning, never more so than for widening participation students, still placed as ‘outsiders’ and often left feeling unwelcome and ‘un-voiced’. Ironically, as Molinari (2022) argues, universities were originally more diverse in form and content, not heavily ‘literate’ but oral, discursive and creative. As HE has become ostensibly more ‘open’ the system has become more normative, more formally rule-bound, more ‘written’ – and hence more exclusive. A recent example in the UK is the Office for Students’ attack on inclusive assessment, pushing instead for more emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar. Alongside this tension, many in the Learning Development (LD) community feel that discipline academics do not see the ‘teaching’ of academic writing as part of their pedagogic and assessment repertoire, preferring to send students to LD ‘to be fixed’. However, academics and LDs engaged in discussion and free writing (Elbow 1998, 1999) on this topic at a LondonMet L&T Conference presented views that were more nuanced and sympathetic. There was a deep appreciation of the ‘real’ work that academic writing does with and for students; but also a sense that they did not know how to build writing into their practice(s). And so was born this staff Guide: a playful, creative and yet intensely practical guide for academic staff who want to empower their students to write – often, playfully, experimentally – on their way to ‘becoming’, and becoming academic. Presenting the Guide in the resource showcase allowed us to highlight the continuing centrality of writing. Lecturers and university staff can use it to engage students in ‘writing to learn’ rather than ‘learning to write’.

Abstract:In 1995, on the occasion of his ‘retirement’, Professor Klaus Wedell wrote a leading article for BJSE entitled ‘Making inclusive education ordinary’. Last October, Professor Wedell, also known to BJSE's readers as the author of the regular ‘Points from the SENCo‐Forum’ column, delivered the Gulliford Lecture at Birmingham University. Here he makes the text of his lecture accessible to a wider audience. In this article, Professor Wedell places some of the ideas he discussed in 1995 in a contemporary context. He explores the systemic rigidities that create barriers to inclusion; he offers creative ideas for new ways to approach the challenges of inclusion; and he argues persuasively for much greater flexibility, at a range of levels, in order to facilitate change, development and innovation. Building on these themes, Professor Wedell summarises a series of implications for policy and practice. These concern teaching and learning; staffing and professional expertise; and grouping and locations for learning. In concluding his article, Professor Wedell calls on the Government to consider in more depth the issues that are raised by moves towards inclusion – particularly those issues that concern the individual learner in relation to the shared curriculum. This article will be of interest to anyone who recognises these and other tensions in the movement towards inclusion.

Abstract:English language arts scholarship has suggested literacy classrooms should be inclusive of both teachers’ and students’ grief and loss experiences; however, teachers’ grieving experiences remain understudied. This article analyzes seven in-depth interviews in order to understand ELA teachers’ experiences of teaching while grieving a death, finding that ELA teachers navigating personal loss perceived particular rules for fulfilling relational work in teaching: hiding certain negative emotions, navigating the teacher role, and foregrounding students’ learning needs. Creating ELA classrooms inclusive of trauma and loss experiences requires teacher educators to attend to the interplay of teachers’ conceptions of relational work and their experiences and emotions related to loss.
A Tale of Two Teachers: A Duoethnography of the Realistic and Idealistic Successes and Failures of Teaching English as An International Language

Abstract:With the growth of English worldwide there have been numerous calls for a paradigm shift from teaching English as foreign language to teaching English as an international language (EIL). While there is a growing body of conceptual literature for teaching EIL, the voices of teachers remain severely underrepresented in this movement. As such, current EIL research is missing the perspective of this key stakeholder, who is in a prime position to report ‘on-the-ground’ challenges of integrating EIL approaches into English language classrooms. This article addresses this gap by offering an in-depth joint autoethnography of two English language teachers, who actively experimented with EIL-informed pedagogy at universities in Japan and Thailand, and who provide very different tales of the resulting challenges and successes. Data was collected via a duoethnographic approach, an innovative methodology which presents two juxtaposing dialogic narratives in order to show readers in-depth, personal and autobiographical accounts from both teachers’ experiences. Analysis of these narratives provides an illustration of the issues surrounding the implementation of research-informed innovations into ELT classrooms. The findings are discussed in terms of whether teaching EIL is a possible reality, or whether it remains an ideological fantasy.

Abstract:Professor William E. Walton (1956–2020) was a giant in the field of mosquito control through wetland management. His early work in aquatic ecology led to an outstanding academic career in the Department of Entomology, at the University of California, Riverside, where mosquitoes became the unifying feature of his varied research. Underpinned by a solid basic science foundation, the primary focus of his studies was non-chemical control of mosquitoes via habitat design and manipulation, natural enemies, bacterial larvicides, growth regulators, and fungi. This paper presents a summary of his scientific contributions to the fields of aquatic ecology, medical entomology, and toxicology, highlighting his laboratory and field-based research findings. <i>The full version of this manuscript that includes Bill's entire body of work is available as Supplemental Material accompanying the online article.</i>

Inspiring teaching: learning from exemplary practitioners

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of ' inspiring teaching' based on case studies of exemplary practitioners in England to inform professional development and collaborative learning and support school improvement. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a mixed methods design involving multiple perspectives. Data sources included interviews with teachers, two systematic classroom observation schedules and qualitative field notes from classroom observations. Quantitative and qualitative findings were integrated to allow for triangulation and synthesis. Findings The ‘inspiring’ sample of teachers exhibited many strengths in terms of the characteristics of more effective teaching identified in previous literature. However, the integration and synthesis of evidence also reveals core features of inspiring practice and highlighted the strong emotional and reflective components that distinguish inspiring practice, including: positive relationships; good classroom/behaviour management; positive and supportive climate; formative feedback; high quality learning experiences; enjoyment, and high levels of student engagement and motivation. Research limitations/implications This small-scale study was based on a purposive sample of 17 teachers in England therefore results cannot necessarily be generalised to other contexts. Practical implications The research findings and approaches can be used to support teachers' professional development and provide resources to promote collaboration in developing professional learning communities. Originality/value The investigation provides new evidence on the characteristics, practices and views of inspiring teachers. The use of multiple perspectives and integration of findings provides new evidence to inform and support the development of professional learning communities.

He is currently Dean of Faculty of Education and Language Studies of The Open University,and is Vice President of the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN,http:// www. edenonline. org). He is also presently Editor of the European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning (http://www. eurodl. org). Since 1974 he has worked for Open University. From 1988-1998 he edited the journal of Open Learning. His research interests include student support/learner support, the organization of learning centres, tutoring and consulting, and the management and training of tutors. His ideas and models about learner support are cited by many researchers and used by many practitioners.

Abstract:John Hodgson (1937–2018) is renowned worldwide as a passionate and principled researcher, dedicated to the study of interactions between grazing livestock and pasture sward, and to whole‐system management of grassland. He published over 250 scientific outputs during his 50‐year career, and inspired generations of grazing ecologists. Following his upbringing on a mixed‐livestock farm in the Yorkshire Dales, John received BSc, PhD and DSc from the University of Leeds, UK . He worked in research institutes in Hurley, England and Penicuik, Scotland, before taking a Chair in Agronomy at Massey University, New Zealand in 1986. There, he progressed to become Head of School for the Environment. John retired from university life in 2002, but never left academia. John's global research legacy is reflected in the international authorship of this memorial review. His international impact is demonstrated by the supervision of over 50 PhD students from all over the world, and by his knowledge‐sharing travels to South America and China. His peers will remember him as a thoughtful and collaborative scholar. His students will remember him as an inspiring and caring mentor. He helped to revolutionize the way that grasslands are managed, in the face of global environmental change and increasing demand on grazed systems. John lost a long battle with Parkinson's disease in October 2018 and is survived by his wife, Ruth, and five children. His own research was often dedicated to his father, Dick Hodgson, and the first author of this tribute wishes to do the same.
