Exploring aspects of self-reported emotional mental imagery in patients with bipolar disorder

Abstract:Background and objectives: CBT for patients with bipolar disorder has modest effects. Across disorders, mental imagery has been used to update CBT to increase effectiveness. In order to enhance CBT for bipolar disorder with imagery techniques, research is needed into emotional imagery quality and, related appraisals of imagery and their relationships with mood instability and subsequent behaviour in bipolar disorder. Methods: Patients with bipolar disorder (n = 106), unipolar depression (n = 51), creative imagery prone participants (n = 53) and participants without a history of a mood disorder (n = 135) completed the Dutch Imagery Survey (DImS), an online imagery survey, adapted from the Imagery Interview, assessing self-reported emotional imagery aspects. Imagery quality, appraisals and their self-perceived effects on emotion and behaviour were compared between groups. As unexpected differences within the bipolar group appeared, these were additionally explored. Results: Imagery appraisals but not imagery quality discriminated between the patient groups and non-patient groups Imagery was perceived as an emotional amplifier in all groups, but this was specifically apparent in bipolar manic and bipolar depressed groups. Only in the bipolar group imagery was experienced to amplify behavioural tendencies. Limitations: Results need to be replicated using a larger sample of patients with BD who are currently manic or depressed. Conclusions: Not only quality of imagery, but especially appraisals associated with imagery are differentiating between imagery prone people with and without mood disorder. Imagery amplifies emotion in all groups, but only in those patients with bipolar disorder currently manic or depressed did this influence behaviour.

Abstract:Background. Major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders (AD) have high degrees of comorbidity and show great overlap in symptoms. The analysis of covarying depressive‐ and anxiety symptoms in longitudinal, sparse data panels has received limited attention. Dynamic time warping (DTW) analysis may help to provide new insights into symptom network properties based on diagnostic‐ and disease‐state stability criteria. Materials and Methods. In the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety depressive‐, anxiety‐, and worry symptoms were assessed four or five times over the course of 9 years using self‐report questionnaires. The sample included 1,649 participants at baseline, comprising controls (n = 360), AD patients (n = 158), MDD patients (n = 265), and comorbid AD–MDD patients (n = 866). With DTW, 1,649 distance matrices were calculated, which yielded symptom networks and enabling comparison of network densities among subgroups. Results. The mean age of the sample was 41.5 years (standard deviations, 13.2), of whom 66.4% were female. The largest distance was between worry symptoms and physiological arousal symptoms, implicating the most dissimilar dynamics over time. The network density in the groups, from lowest to highest, followed the order: controls, AD, MDD, and comorbid AD–MDD. The comorbid group showed strongly connected mood and cognitive symptoms, which contrasted with the more strongly connected somatic and arousal symptoms in the AD and MDD groups. Groups that showed more transitions in disease states over follow‐up, regardless of the diagnoses, had the highest network density compared to more stable states of health or disease (beta for quadratic term = −0.095; P < 0.001). Conclusions. Symptom networks over time can be visualized by applying DTW methods on sparse panel data. Network density was highest in patients with comorbid anxiety and depressive disorders and those with more instability in disease states, suggesting that a stronger internal connectivity may facilitate "critical transitions" within the complex systems framework.

Abstract:Introduction In recent research, psychological disorders have been increasingly defined as complex dynamic systems in which symptoms are interconnected and influence each other, thereby forming symptom networks. This paradigm shift calls for the analysis and interpretation of relationships between symptoms that are complex, potentially non-linear, and dynamic. Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) is used to measure similarity in temporal sequences, and has recently been found effective in modelling psychopathology symptom networks. Objectives We aim to demonstrate that DTW could also be used to model the network structure in Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data. Methods 355 participants of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), of which 100 with and 255 without current disorder, completed EMA assessments of 20 symptoms (e.g., feeling sad, tired, satisfied) five times a day for two weeks. DTW analysis was performed on the group level, comparing participants suffering from mood disorders to healthy controls. DTW distances were visualized as an undirected symptom network, in which we adjusted for the average symptom severity per item per person. Results DTW analysis of close to half a million symptom scores yielded six symptom dimensions based on their aggregated similarity of changes over time within the participants. Surprisingly, negative affect symptom networks were found to be less strongly connected in those currently suffering from mood disorders than in controls, whereas the network density of (reverse-coded) positive affect symptoms was more closely connected in this group. This is contrary to the results of previous studies, where negative affect-related symptom networks of those with mood disorders were found to be more strongly interconnected. Conclusions DTW is a promising new technique for analyzing EMA data and modeling dynamic symptom networks at both the individual and group levels. Using EMA data, symptom networks and dimensions can be modeled with great structural and temporal detail. Abstract:Objectives: Recent years have seen an increased interest regarding theoretical and empirical associations of adult attachment security and primary affective traits concerning psychiatric disorders. In this study, network analysis technique is applied to dissect the links between both psychodynamic personality constructs and an array of psychopathological symptoms. Methods: A total sample of 921 (69.9 % female) participants from the general population was investigated. A regularized cross-sectional partial correlation network between attachment (Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised [ECR-RD8]), primary affective traits (Brief Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales [BANPS-GL]) and psychopathological symptoms (ICD-10-Symptom-Rating Questionnaire [ISR]) was estimated via the EBICglasso algorithm. Node centrality, predictability and bridge centrality were analyzed. To evaluate the stability of the network and evaluate the significance of differences, we employed bootstrap techniques. Results: The network was found to be stable, allowing reliable interpretations. We observed SADNESS, as well as depressive, PTSD and anxiety symptoms as the most influential nodes within the investigated network. Attachment AV and SADNESS were observed as nodes with the highest bridge centrality. Conclusions: The results provide a data-driven in-depth look into the complex dynamics between psychopathological symptoms, attachment security and basic affective traits. Results underscore the critical interconnections between affect, attachment, and psychopathology, advocating for a psychodynamically informed systems approach in psychological research that considers the affective dimensions underlying human mental health.

Abstract:Introduction This study investigated source-level cortical functional networks using resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) in patients with Bipolar disorder and Major depressive disorder, comparing the neuropathology of these disorders. Objectives This study investigated source-level cortical functional networks using resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) in patients with Bipolar disorder and Major depressive disorder, comparing the neuropathology of these disorders. Methods A total of 116 participants (35 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder(BD), 39 patients diagnosed with Major depressive disorder(MDD), and 42 people who are healthy-control groups(HC)) were enrolled for this study. Depression and anxiety were evaluated with using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Graph theory‐based source‐level weighted functional networks were assessed via strength, clustering coefficient (CC), and path length (PL) in six frequency bands. Results At the global level, patients with BD and MDD showed higher strength (p = 0.001) and CC (p = 0.001), and lower PL (p < 0.001) in the high beta band, compared to HCs. At the nodal level, compared to HCs, patients with BD showed higher high beta band nodal CCs in the right precuneus(p < 0.001), left isthmus cingulate(p < 0.001), bilateral paracentral(p < 0.001), and left superior frontal(p < 0.001); however, patients with MDD showed higher nodal CC only in the right precuneus(p < 0.001) compared to HCs. Although both MDD and BD patients had similar global level network changes, they had different nodal level network changes compared to HCs. Conclusions This study suggest that both patients have similar network changes at the global level, but they have different network changes at the nodal level. Also, the higher nodal CCs in the high beta band might indicate the regions became more connected with their neighbors in accordance with the severity of depressive and anxious states. This study found a significant correlation between cortical network state and anxiety-related psychological measure in BD patients. Our source-level cortical network indices might contribute to the understanding of the neuropathological mechanisms in these two disorders. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Abstract:As proposed in a prominent developmental model, social anxiety has different manifestations: social fear, shy temperament, anxious cognitions, and avoidance of social situations. Drawing from this model, we used the network approach to psychopathology to gain a detailed understanding of specific social anxiety components and their associations. The current article investigated (a) how social anxiety components are interconnected within a network, and (b) the consistency of the network over time, in a community sample of children and adolescents. Data from 3 waves of a longitudinal study were used. At Time 1 (T1) the total sample comprised 331 participants (<i>M</i><sub>age</sub> = 13.34 years); at Time 3 (T3) there were 236 participants (<i>M</i><sub>age</sub> = 17.48 years). Social anxiety components were assessed with self-report questionnaires. Networks of 15 nodes (i.e., components) were estimated. Network analysis of T1 components revealed 4 communities: <i>cognitive, social-emotional, avoidance of performance</i>, and avoidance of <i>interaction</i> situations. There were no direct connections between the <i>cognitive</i> and <i>behavioral</i> communities; <i>social-emotional</i> nodes appeared to act as bridge components between the 2 communities. A similar pattern of component associations and communities was found in the T2 and T3 networks, and the longitudinal network incorporating node change trajectories. Networks were estimated on group-level observational data and conclusions about cause-effect relationships are tentative. Although the sample size decreased across the 3 waves, the reliability of parameter estimates were minimally affected. Findings attest to the potential value of applying the network approach to investigate the pattern of associations among social anxiety components in youth. Network Analysis of Behavioral Activation/Inhibition Systems and Brain Volume in Individuals With and Without Major Depressive Disorder or Social Anxiety Disorder

Abstract:Background: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are characterized by behavioral abnormalities in motivational systems, namely the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and behavioral activation system (BAS). Limited studies indicate brain volume in regions that support emotion, learning/memory, reward, and cognitive functions relate to BIS/BAS. To increase understanding of BIS/BAS, the current study used a network approach. Methods: Patients with SAD (n = 59), patients with MDD (n = 64), and healthy control participants (n = 36) completed a BIS/BAS questionnaire and structural magnetic resonance imaging scans; volumetric regions of interest comprised cortical and limbic structures based on previous BIS/BAS studies. A Bayesian Gaussian graphical model was used for each diagnostic group, and groups were compared. Among network metrics, bridge centrality was of primary interest. Analysis of variance evaluated BIS/BAS behaviors between groups. Results: Bridge centrality showed hippocampus positively related to BAS, but not to BIS, in the MDD group; no findings were observed in the SAD or control groups. Yet, network density (i.e., overall strength of relationships between variables) and degree centrality (i.e., overall relationship between one variable to all other variables) showed that cortical (e.g., precuneus, medial orbitofrontal) and subcortical (e.g., amygdala, hippocampus) regions differed between diagnostic groups. Analysis of variance results showed BAS was lower in the MDD/SAD groups compared with the control group, while BIS was higher in the SAD group relative to the MDD group, which in turn was higher than the control group. Conclusions: Preliminary findings indicate that network-level aberrations may underlie motivational abnormalities in MDD and SAD. Evidence of BIS/BAS differences builds on previous work that points to shared and distinct motivational differences in internalizing psychopathologies.
Functional network characteristics in anxiety- and mania-based subgroups of bipolar I disorder

Abstract:Background: Bipolar disorder I (BD-I) is a heterogeneous disorder with a high prevalence of comorbid anxiety. The aim of this study was to investigate whether anxiety and mania symptoms define distinct subgroups within BD-I and to explore potential differences in functional network characteristics between these subgroups. Methods: Subgroups were identified using scores from clinical anxiety and mania scales. After dimension reduction of these scores, data-driven clustering analysis with cross-validation was employed to reveal the existence of subgroups. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans were pre-processed using fMRIPrep. After parcellation and network construction, global and regional graph theoretical measures were calculated per subgroup. Results: Clustering results revealed that, based on anxiety symptomatology, subjects fell into two distinct subgroups, whereas mania symptoms divided subjects into four unique subgroups. These subgroups varied notably on several symptom scales. Network assortativity was significantly associated with anxiety subgroups. Post-hoc pairwise comparisons did not reveal significant global functional network differences between the anxiety subgroups or between mania subgroups. Regional network differences between clinical subgroups were especially apparent for strength and degree in the temporal and frontal lobes. Limitations: Small sample size of some subgroups is a limitation of this study as is the categorical rather than continuous representation of anxiety and mania symptoms. Conclusions: BD-I populations may be stratified into robust subgroups based on anxiety and mania symptoms, showing differences in functional network connectivity. Our findings highlight new avenues of research for investigating heterogeneity in psychiatric populations.

Abstract:Background: Analysis of dynamic (temporal) networks allows an identification of important targets of treatment.Objective: This study examined the dynamic network of symptoms in patients diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during exposure therapy.Method: Patients (n = 65) were randomized to either standard prolonged exposure, which includes imaginal exposure to the traumatic memory, or modified prolonged exposure, where imagery re-scripting of the memory replaced imaginal exposure, in a 10-week residential program. They completed a measure of DSM-IV PTSD symptoms weekly. The multilevel vector autoregressive (mlVAR) model was used to analyse the data, producing a temporal (dynamic), contemporaneous, and between-person network.Results: Physiological reactivity to reminders in a given week was positively related to distress reactivity and to flashbacks the subsequent week. Hypervigilance one week was positively related to startle response and external avoidance the subsequent week. In addition, sleep problems were positively predicted by previous week internal avoidance and negatively predicted by previous week flashbacks. Hypervigilance and physiological reactivation had the highest out-strength, indicating that they were the most predictive of other symptoms.Conclusions: The present within-person results make a preliminaryrect basis for the recommendation to monitor and facilitate change in physiological reactivation and hypervigilance in the treatment of PTSD. Future studies should examine the replicability of our temporal PTSD network and also include causal variables beyond symptoms.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>Comorbidities in mental disorders are often understood by assuming a common cause. The network theory of mental disorders offers an alternative to this assumption by understanding comorbidities as mutually reinforced problems. In this study, we used network analysis to examine bridge symptoms between anxiety and depression in a large sample.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Method</h3><p>Using data from a sample of patients diagnosed with both depression and an anxiety disorder before and after inpatient treatment (<i>N</i> = 5,614, mean age: 42.24, 63.59% female, average treatment duration: 48.12 days), network models of depression and anxiety symptoms are estimated. Topology, the centrality of nodes, stability, and changes in network structure are analyzed. Symptoms that drive comorbidity are determined by bridge node analysis. As an alternative to network communities based on categorical diagnosis, we performed a community analysis and propose empirically derived symptom subsets. </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>The obtained network models are highly stable. Sad mood and the inability to control worry are the most central. Psychomotor agitation or retardation is the strongest bridge node between anxiety and depression, followed by concentration problems and restlessness. Changes in appetite and suicidality were unique to depression. Community analysis revealed four symptom groups.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusion</h3><p>The estimated network structure of depression and anxiety symptoms proves to be highly accurate. Results indicate that some symptoms are considerably more influential than others and that only a small number of predominantly physical symptoms are strong candidates for explaining comorbidity. Future studies should include physiological measures in network models to provide a more accurate understanding.</p></section>

Network Structure of Interpersonal Sensitivity in Patients With Mood Disorders: A Network Analysis

Abstract:Objective: Interpersonal sensitivity, characterized by a heightened awareness of others' behavior and emotions, is linked to mood disorders. However, current literature lacks a comprehensive analysis of how some items of the Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure (IPSM) interrelate and contribute to the overall construct. This study constructed a network for interpersonal sensitivity symptomatology to identify core IPSM items in patients with mood disorders. Methods: The IPSM, a 36-item self-report scale, was utilized to evaluate interpersonal sensitivity symptoms in 837 participants (major depressive disorder [MDD], n=265; bipolar I disorder [BD I], n=126; and bipolar II disorder [BD II], n=446). We performed exploratory graph analysis, employing regularized partial correlation models to estimate the network structure. Centrality analysis identified core IPSM symptoms for each mood disorder group. Network comparison tests assessed structural differences between the MDD and BD subgroups. Results: Network analysis detected five communities. Item 10 ("I worry about being criticized for things that I have said or done") showed the highest value in strength. Multiple items on "Interpersonal Worry/Dependency" and "Low Self-Esteem" showed high strength centrality. Network structure invariance and global strength invariance test results indicated no significant differences between the MDD and BD subgroups. Conclusion: Our findings emphasize the importance of addressing "Interpersonal Worry/Dependency" and "Low Self-Esteem" in the IPSM network among mood disorder patients based on core items of the network. Additionally, targeted treatments and comprehensive strategies in this aspect could be crucial for managing mood disorders.
[Network model of mental disorders: Application and interest in post-stroke depression]

Abstract:In contrast to the classic models in psychopathology, the network model considers that the temporal interactions between symptoms are the causes of their occurrence. This model could also be particularly suitable for understanding the processes involved in post-stroke depression. The aim of this paper is to perform a network analysis in order to describe the temporal dynamic of the links existing between depression symptoms during the acute phase after stroke. Twenty-five patients (64% male, mean age 58.1±14.9 years old) hospitalized for a minor stroke (no neurocognitive or motor impairment) were involved in an Ecological Momentary Assessment methodology-based study. They used a smartphone application in order to complete four brief questionnaires each day during the week after hospital discharge. The questionnaire included 7-point Likert scales to measure the severity of the following depressive symptoms: sadness, anhedonia, fatigue, diminished concentration ability, negative thoughts on oneself, pessimism. We used Multilevel Vector Autoregressive analysis to describe the temporal links between those symptoms. We used the software R 3.6.0 with the mlVAR package. The p-value was set at .05. The results show two independent symptoms networks. The first one involves the anhedonia, fatigue, negative thoughts on oneself and sadness. It shows that: anhedonia predicts the activation of later fatigue (β=0.135, P=0.037) and later negative thoughts (β=0.152, P=0.019); negative thoughts predict later negative thoughts (β=0.143, P=0.028) and later sadness (β=0.171, P=0.021); fatigue predicts later fatigue (β=0.261, P<0.000). Pessimism and diminished concentration ability compose the second network, and the results show that pessimism predicts later pessimism (β=0.215, P=0.012) and later diminished concentration ability (β=0.178, P=0.045). On the one hand, anhedonia thus plays an important role in the initial and progressive activation of the other symptoms of its network. On the other hand, the cognitive symptoms (negative thoughts and pessimism) cause the deterioration of the mood and the deficit of attentional abilities. Using behavioral and cognitive strategies to support patients after hospital discharge would reduce the risk of depressive complications after a stroke. This study provides convincing empirical elements for the interest of the network model for research in psychopathology and the clinical implications and perspectives allowed by network analysis.
Associations Between Daily Affective Instability and Connectomics in Functional Subnetworks in Remitted Patients with Recurrent Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract:Remitted patients with major depressive disorder (rMDD) often report more fluctuations in mood as residual symptomatology. It is unclear how this affective instability is associated with information processing related to the default mode (DMS), salience/reward (SRS), and frontoparietal (FPS) subnetworks in rMDD patients at high risk of recurrence (rrMDD). Sixty-two unipolar, drug-free rrMDD patients (⩾2 MDD episodes) and 41 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. We used experience sampling methodology to monitor mood/cognitions (10 times a day for 6 days) and calculated affective instability using the mean adjusted absolute successive difference. Subsequently, we collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data and performed graph theory to obtain network metrics of integration within (local efficiency) the DMS, SRS, and FPS, and between (participation coefficient) these subnetworks and others. In rrMDD patients compared with HCs, we found that affective instability was increased in most negative mood/cognition variables and that the DMS had less connections with other subnetworks. Furthermore, we found that rrMDD patients, who showed more instability in feeling down and irritated, had less connections between the SRS and other subnetworks and higher local efficiency coefficients in the FPS, respectively. In conclusion, rrMDD patients, compared with HCs, are less stable in their negative mood and these dynamics are related to differences in information processing within- and between-specific functional subnetworks. These results are a first step to gain a better understanding of how mood fluctuations in real life are represented in the brain and provide insights into the vulnerability profile of MDD.

Abstract:Negative emotions and associated avoidance behaviors are core symptoms of anxiety. Current treatments aim to resolve dysfunctional coupling between them. However, precise interactions between emotions and avoidance in patients' everyday lives and changes from pre- to post-treatment remain unclear. We analyzed data from a randomized controlled trial where patients with anxiety disorders underwent 16 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Fifty-six patients (68 % female, age: M = 33.31, SD = 12.45) completed ecological momentary assessments five times a day on 14 consecutive days before and after treatment, rating negative emotions and avoidance behaviors experienced within the past 30 min. We computed multilevel vector autoregressive models to investigate contemporaneous and time-lagged associations between anxiety, depression, anger, and avoidance behaviors within patients, separately at pre- and post-treatment. We examined pre-post changes in network density and avoidance centrality, and related these metrics to changes in symptom severity. Network density significantly decreased from pre- to post-treatment, indicating that after therapy, mutual interactions between negative emotions and avoidance were attenuated. Specifically, contemporaneous associations between anxiety and avoidance observed before CBT were no longer significant at post-treatment. Effects of negative emotions on avoidance assessed at a later time point (avoidance instrength) decreased, but not significantly. Reduction in avoidance instrength positively correlated with reduction in depressive symptom severity, meaning that as patients improved, they were less likely to avoid situations after experiencing negative emotions. Our results elucidate mechanisms of successful CBT observed in patients' daily lives and may help improve and personalize CBT to increase its effectiveness.

Abstract:Objectives Dysfunctional mental imagery-based simulations of emotional future events (episodic future simulation) - can contribute to emotional dysregulation in the bipolar disorder spectrum (BPDS). For example, vividly imaging social encounters having a disastrous outcome can trigger low mood. However, episodic future simulation may be perceptually modified to reduce their emotional intensity, which may in turn reduce BPDS mood instability. This study investigates the neural bases of perceptual and emotional characteristics of negative episodic future simulation in BPDS, and of perceptually manipulating such imagery. Methods Euthymic participants with BPDS (N=20) and healthy controls (HC, N=17) underwent an fMRI scan whilst generating, then perceptually modifying, negative episodic future imagery, and during rest. Results Negative episodic future imagery were rated as significantly more real and unpleasant in the BPDS compared to HC group. Critically, perceptual manipulation of such imagery reduced ratings in the BPDS group to HC levels. Whole-brain analyses of task-based neural activity revealed greater activation in networks including right frontal pole, middle and inferior frontal gyrus and insula during episodic future simulation in BPSD versus HC. BPDS participants showed greater intrinsic resting state functional connectivity within the default mode network than HC participants. Conclusions Findings suggest dysfunctional episodic future simulation circuitry across default mode network, fronto-parietal and fronto-insular areas may represent a neural mechanism via which mental imagery amplifies emotion in BPDS. Perceptual modifications to dampen such imagery successfully abolished subjective and neural differences between groups, indicating promise as an intervention tool targeting mood instability.

Comorbidity between depression and anxiety: assessing the role of bridge mental states in dynamic psychological networks

Abstract:Abstract Background Comorbidity between depressive and anxiety disorders is common. A hypothesis of the network perspective on psychopathology is that comorbidity arises due to the interplay of symptoms shared by both disorders, with overlapping symptoms acting as so-called bridges , funneling symptom activation between symptom clusters of each disorder. This study investigated this hypothesis by testing whether (i) two overlapping mental states “worrying” and “feeling irritated” functioned as bridges in dynamic mental state networks of individuals with both depression and anxiety as compared to individuals with either disorder alone, and (ii) overlapping or non-overlapping mental states functioned as stronger bridges. Methods Data come from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). A total of 143 participants met criteria for comorbid depression and anxiety (65%), 40 participants for depression-only (18.2%), and 37 for anxiety-only (16.8%) during any NESDA wave. Participants completed momentary assessments of symptoms (i.e., mental states) of depression and anxiety, five times a day, for 2 weeks (14,185 assessments). First, dynamics between mental states were modeled with a multilevel vector autoregressive model, using Bayesian estimation. Summed average lagged indirect effects through the hypothesized bridge mental states were compared between groups. Second, we evaluated the role of all mental states as potential bridge mental states. Results While the summed indirect effect for the bridge mental state “worrying” was larger in the comorbid group compared to the single disorder groups, differences between groups were not statistically significant. The difference between groups became more pronounced when only examining individuals with recent diagnoses (< 6 months). However, the credible intervals of the difference scores remained wide. In the second analysis, a non-overlapping item (“feeling down”) acted as the strongest bridge mental state in both the comorbid and anxiety-only groups. Conclusions This study empirically examined a prominent network-approach hypothesis for the first time using longitudinal data. No support was found for overlapping mental states “worrying” and “feeling irritable” functioning as bridge mental states in individuals vulnerable for comorbid depression and anxiety. Potentially, bridge mental state activity can only be observed during acute symptomatology. If so, these may present as interesting targets in treatment, but not prevention. This requires further investigation.

Abstract:Abstract Network approaches to psychopathology have become increasingly common in mental health research, with many theoretical and methodological developments quickly gaining traction. This article illustrates contemporary practices in applying network analytical tools, bridging the gap between network concepts and their empirical applications. We explain how we can use graphs to construct networks representing complex associations among observable psychological variables. We then discuss key network models, including dynamic networks, time‐varying networks, network models derived from panel data, network intervention analysis, latent networks, and moderated models. In addition, we discuss Bayesian networks and their role in causal inference with a focus on cross‐sectional data. After presenting the different methods, we discuss how network models and psychopathology theories can meaningfully inform each other. We conclude with a discussion that summarizes the insights each technique can provide in mental health research.

Abstract:Abstract People suffering from dysphoria retrieve autobiographical memories distorted in content and affect, which may contribute to the aetiology and maintenance of depression. However, key memory difficulties in dysphoria remain elusive because theories disagree how memories of different valence are altered. Here, we assessed the psychophysiological expression of affect and retrieved episodic detail while participants with dysphoria (but without a diagnosed mental illness) and participants without dysphoria relived positive, negative, and neutral memories. We show that participants with dysphoria retrieve positive memories with diminished episodic detail and negative memories with enhanced detail, compared to participants without dysphoria. This is in line with negativity bias but not overgeneral memory bias theories. According to confirmatory analyses, participants with dysphoria also express diminished positive affect and enhanced negative affect when retrieving happy memories, but exploratory analyses suggest that this increase in negative affect may not be robust. Further confirmatory analyses showed that affective responses to memories are not related to episodic detail and already present during the experience of new emotional events. Our results indicate that affective memory distortions may not emerge from mnemonic processes but from general distortions in positive affect, which challenges assumptions of memory theories and therapeutics.
