Abstract:Purpose An estimated 2.2 billion people are visually impaired worldwide. Given that age-related vision loss is a primary cause of vision impairment, this number is projected to rise with increases in average lifespan. Vision loss often results in significant disability and is associated with a substantial economic burden, reduced quality-of-life, concurrent medical issues, and mental health problems. In this review, the mental health needs of people with vision impairment are examined. Patients and methods A review of recent literature on mental health outcomes and current treatments in people with visual impairment was conducted. Results Considerable data indicate that rates of depression and anxiety are elevated among people with visual impairments. Moreover, individuals of lower socioeconomic status may be at increased risk for vision impairment and subsequent mental health problems. Existing psychosocial interventions for improving mental health in people with visual impairment show some promise, but are limited by low adherence and lack generalizability. Conclusion In order to improve outcomes, a better understanding of the mechanisms linking visual impairment and poor mental health is needed. It will also be essential to develop more effective interventions and expand access to services to improve the detection and treatment of mental health problems in this population.

Systematic Review of the Link Between Social Cognition and Suicidal Ideation and Behavior in People With Serious Mental Illness

Abstract:Background and hypothesis: People with serious mental illness (SMI; psychotic and affective disorders with psychosis) are at an increased risk of suicide, yet there is limited research on the correlates of suicide in SMI. Social cognitive impairments are common among people with SMI and several studies have examined social cognition and suicidal ideation (SI) and behavior. This systematic review aims to evaluate the links between various domains of social cognition, SI, and suicidal behavior in SMI. Study design: Electronic databases (PubMed and PsycInfo) were searched through June 2023. Records obtained through this search (N = 618) were screened by 2 independent reviewers according to inclusion criteria. Relevant data were extracted, and study quality was assessed. Study results: Studies (N = 16) from 12 independent samples were included in the systematic review (N = 2631, sample sizes ranged from N = 20 to N = 593). Assessments of social cognition and SI and behavior varied widely between studies. Broadly, effects were mixed. Better emotion recognition of negative affect was linked to SI and a history of suicide attempts, though there is little consistent evidence for the relationship of emotion recognition and SI or behavior. On the other hand, better theory of mind ability was linked to SI and a history of suicide attempts. Furthermore, negative attributional bias was linked to current SI, but not a history of SI or attempt. Conclusions: This review suggests mixed associations between social cognition, SI, and behavior in SMI. Future research should evaluate additional mediators and moderators of social cognition and suicide, employing prospective designs.
Associated Factors of Suicidal Behavior Among Persons with Physical Disability: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Suicide is common among persons with physical disabilities as they face several physical, social, psychological, and economic problems. They are at risk for suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and death by suicide. We aimed to systematically review empirically published articles and identify the associated factors of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in persons with physical disabilities. Methods: A systematic search was carried out on the literature published from January 1, 2000 to January 19, 2023 in PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Shodh Ganga, and so on. All the synonyms of keywords or MeSH terms for suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and physical disability were used. Two hundred thirty-six articles were found, and after following inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 remained. Result: The associated factors of suicidal behavior were disability status (11/12 studies), burdensomeness (8/12 studies), felt stigma (4/12 studies), depressive symptoms (6/12 studies), loneliness (2/12 studies), lack of social and emotional connectedness (2/12 studies), long-term physical or mental disability (2/12 studies), congenital disability (1/12 studies), and aggression (1/12 studies). Conclusion: Timely, evidence-based, low-cost interventions can provide great assistance and address the specific needs of this vulnerable population as they have higher risk for suicidal behavior.
Vision Loss and Substance Misuse: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: The number of people in the U.S. affected by sensory disabilities and/or substance use has continued to increase, but the relationship between them has yet to be fully understood. The purpose of this review is to assess the relationship between substance use and vision loss in the U.S. as described by current literature. Methods: A search of published literature was conducted across MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO, Web of Science, and EBSCO: Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, and CINAHL following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analysis (PRISMA) protocol. Risk of bias was assessed by the authors based on study design. U.S. based studies written in English between 2010 and 2022 that reported on vision loss and substance use were included. Results: In all, 21 articles were included (case reports 11, case series 1, cross-sectional 4, retrospective cohort 3, review 2) representing 89,132 patients. Nineteen studies found a positive association between vision loss and substance use, with 15 studies suggesting substance use was a risk factor for vision loss. One study reported on vision loss preceding substance use but was inconclusive. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that substance use may be a risk factor for vision loss, and we recommend that providers screen for vision loss in at risk patients to mitigate further disability. Further research is needed to assess the impact visual disabilities may have on substance use, and stronger evidence is needed to verify if substance use is truly a risk factor for vision loss.

The Association Between Vision Impairment and Cognitive Outcomes in Older Adults: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Objectives To provide a quantitative synthesis of studies on the relationship between vision impairment (VI) and cognitive outcomes in older adults. Method A systematic search was undertaken of relevant databases for original articles published before April 2020. Random effect models were used to obtain pooled estimates of the associations between VI and cognitive outcomes (cognitive impairment and dementia) with subgroup analyses of VI measures, cross-sectional associations of VI with cognitive impairment, and longitudinal associations of baseline VI with incident cognitive impairment and dementia. Potential sources of heterogeneity were explored by meta-regression. Publication bias was evaluated with Egger's test. Results Sixteen studies including 76,373 participants were included in this meta-analysis, with five cross-sectional studies and eleven longitudinal studies. There was a significantly increased risk of cognitive outcomes with VI identified by subjective measures (odds ratio (OR)=1.63; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.26-1.99) and objective measures (OR = 1.59; 95% CI: 1.40-1.78). The odds of baseline cognitive impairment were 137% higher in older adults with VI compared with those without VI (OR = 2.37, 95% CI: 1.84-3.03) at baseline. Compared with older adults without VI at baseline, those with baseline VI had a higher relative risk (RR) of incident cognitive impairment (RR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.31-1.51) and dementia (RR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.19-1.75). Conclusions VI was associated with increased risks of cognitive impairment and dementia across cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Additional research and randomized clinical trials are warranted to examine the implications of treatment for VI, such as wearing glasses and cataract surgery, to avoid cognitive impairment and dementia.

Abstract:Objectives There has been increasing epidemiological research examining the association between vision impairment (VI) and cognitive impairment and how poor vision may be a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. The objective of this systematic review is to synthesise the published literature on the association of VI with cognitive decline, cognitive impairment or dementia, to aid the development of interventions and guide public policies pertaining to the relationship between vision and cognition. Methods A literature search was performed with Embase, Medline and Cochrane library databases from inception to March 2020, and included abstracts and articles published in peer-reviewed journals in English. Our inclusion criteria included publications that contained subjective/objective measures of vision and cognition, or a diagnosis of VI, cognitive impairment or dementia. Longitudinal or cross-sectional studies with ≥100 participants aged >50 years were included. The search identified 11 805 articles whose abstracts underwent screening by three teams of study authors. Data abstraction and quality assessment using the Effective Public Health Practice Project Quality Assessment Tool were performed by one author (NN). 10% of the articles underwent abstraction and appraisal by a second author (LA/VV), results were compared between both and were in agreement. Results 110 full-text articles were selected for data extraction, of which 53 were cross-sectional, 43 longitudinal and 14 were case–control studies. The mean age of participants was 73.0 years (range 50–93.1). Ninety-one (83%) of these studies reported that VI was associated with cognitive impairment. Conclusion Our systematic review indicates that a majority of studies examining the vision–cognition relationship report that VI is associated with more cognitive decline, cognitive impairment or dementia among older adults. This synthesis supports the need for additional research to understand the mechanisms underlying the association between VI and cognitive impairment and to test interventions that mitigate the cognitive consequences of VI.

A review of suicidality in persons with intellectual disability

Abstract:It has been assumed that impaired intellectual capacity could act as a buffer to suicidality in the population of persons with intellectual disability (ID), developmental disability or mental retardation. The few studies conducted contest this assumption and in fact findings show that the characteristics of suicidality in that population were very similar to that in persons without intellectual disability. This paper reviews the studies conducted and describes the symptomatology in this population, risk factors, screening and intervention. Professionals working with this population should therefore be aware of and assess for this behavior, since in one study it was found that many caregivers were unaware of suicidality in their clients. Only two studies had systematically examined differences between suicidal and non-suicidal individuals with ID with regard to risk factors. Risk factors found were history of prior psychiatric hospitalization, comorbid physical disabilities, loneliness, sadness, depression or anxiety. There is limited research on intervention for suicidal behavior in the ID population, but professionals should consider risk factors for suicide in this population and intervene when suicidal risk/behavior is found.

Abstract:Globally, suicide is a public health concern that claims the lives of many each year. The complex etiology and factors contributing to the risk of suicide make it hard to predict the likelihood of death by suicide. Suicide rates have been increasing over the past 25 years in patients aged 65 years and older, and with the expected increases in the size of the older adult population and the under-detection of suicide risk, these rates may continue to increase. To mitigate and attempt to limit this expected increase, it is important to understand the risk and protective factors of suicide in older adults. This narrative review focuses on individuals above the age of 65 and encompasses relevant peer-reviewed publications from the past 25 years to cover fatal and non-fatal suicidal behaviour. It summarizes several important risk factors for suicide and suicidal behaviors while considering how risk can be detected, assessed, prevented, and mitigated. Screening methods to detect suicide and depression in older adults were examined based on their effectiveness and suitability for use in this population. Lastly, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on suicide rates in older adults were described.

Abstract:Introduction: Treatable mental disorders, such as psychotic, major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD), contribute to a substantial portion of suicide risk, often accompanied by neurocognitive deficits. We report the association between cognitive function and suicidal ideation/suicide attempts (SI/SA) in individuals with schizoaffective disorder, BD, and MDD. Methods: A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, Ovid and Scopus databases for primary studies published from inception to April 2024. Eligible articles that reported on the effect size of association between cognition and SI/SA were pooled using a random effects model. Results: A total of 41 studies were included for analysis. There was a negative association between executive functioning and SI/SA in schizoaffective disorder (SA: Corr = -0·78, 95 % CI [-1·00, 0·98]; SI: Corr = -0·06, 95 % CI [-0·85, 0·82]) and MDD (SA: Corr = -0·227, 95 % CI [-0·419, -0·017]; SI: Corr = -0·14, 95 % CI [-0·33, 0·06]). Results were mixed for BD, with a significant positive association between SA and global executive functioning (Corr = 0·08, 95 % CI [0·01, 0·15]) and negative association with emotion inhibition. Mixed results were observed for processing speed, attention, and learning and memory, transdiagnostically. Limitations: There is heterogeneity across sample compositions and cognitive measures. We did not have detailed information on individuals with respect to demographics and comorbidities. Conclusions: We observed a transdiagnostic association between measures of cognitive functions and aspects of suicidality. The interplay of cognitive disturbances, particularly in reward-based functioning, may underlie suicidality in individuals with mental disorders. Disturbances in impulse control, planning, and working memory may contribute to self-injurious behavior and suicide.

Abstract:AbstractThe association of visual impairment and depression has been investigated in several studies based on a cross-sectional design, which cannot delineate temporal relationships. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of visual impairment on depression in all age groups using a longitudinal database of a national sample cohort from 2002 to 2013 provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Of a total of 1,025,340 subjects, 5,846 participants who were registered as visually impaired persons without a previous diagnosis of depression were enrolled at a 1:4 ratio with 23,384 control participants matched for age, sex, income, and region of residence. The crude and adjusted (age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia) hazard ratios (HRs) for the development of depression between the visually impaired and control groups were analyzed using a Cox proportional hazards model. Visual impairment increased the risk of depression after adjusting for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia (adjusted HR = 1.19, P = 0.002). The risk of depression increased significantly in both the non-blindness visual impairment (adjusted HR = 1.15, P = 0.036) and blindness subgroups (adjusted HR = 1.31, P = 0.016), with a higher HR in the blindness subgroup.

The impact of different neurobehavioral symptoms on suicidal ideation and perceived likelihood of future suicidality

Abstract:Existing literature suggests that psychological and functional impairment, independent of head injury severity, can increase suicide risk. This study explores the impacts of self-perceived dysfunction within four neurobehavioral symptom clusters—vestibular (e.g., dizziness, balance), somatosensory (e.g., headaches, nausea, vision), affective (e.g., anxious, irritable mood), and cognitive (e.g., concentration, memory, indecision)—on current suicidal ideation and the perceived likelihood of future suicidal ideation and attempts. Community participants ( n = 309; M age = 36.88; 51.6% female; 79.6% White) completed the Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) and the Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors-Short Form (SITBI-SF). Quantile regression analysis was used to explore the effects of the four neurobehavioral symptom clusters at different levels of suicidal ideation intensity, perceived likelihood of future suicidal ideation, and self-perceived likelihood of future suicide attempt. Controlling for past head injuries and suicide attempts, affective symptoms were significantly associated with a moderate and high average intensity of current suicidal ideation. Somatosensory symptoms were significantly associated with a moderate perceived likelihood of future suicidal ideation. Finally, vestibular symptoms were significantly associated with a moderate perceived likelihood of a future suicide attempt. These findings highlight the critical need to consider a broader spectrum of symptoms, including chronic physical symptoms, when assessing suicide risk. Furthermore, they underscore the need to expand beyond affective symptoms as an explanation for increased suicidality and examine additional mechanisms through which chronic physical symptoms can increase suicide risk.

Abstract:Objective The objective of this review was to provide a comprehensive summary and analysis of the risk factors associated with suicidal ideation among cancer patients. Methods This review adhered to the PICO/S framework and guidelines outlined in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) framework (PROSPERO CRD42023433639). We searched Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library from the establishment date of the databases until June 9, 2023 for observational studies that reveal risk factors associated with suicidal ideation among cancer patients. Software Review Manager 5 (vision 5.4) was used for Meta-analyses. Results 4,921 studies were obtained through the search of the databases, 40 of which were eligible. Meta-analysis revealed that suicidal ideation in cancer patients was significantly associated with marital status, living alone, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, education, psychiatric illness history, social functioning, childhood adversity experience, financial problems, pain, depression, demoralization, vomiting, residence and anxiety. Conclusion Being unmarried, living alone, less educated, living in rural, financial problems, pain, vomiting, PTSD, psychiatric illness history, lower social functioning, childhood adversity experience, anxiety, depression, demoralization, panic disorder were risk factors for suicidal ideation among cancer patients. This review provided evidence-based information for identifying and reducing the risk of suicide in cancer survivors. The association between road traffic accidents and visual functions: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Poor visual functions have been reported to be related to the occurrence of road traffic accidents. Aim: To review the association between visual function and road traffic accidents (RTAs) from published relevant empirical studies. Setting: Worldwide. Methods: A random effects (RE) model meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 18. Statistical tests conducted include meta-summary statistics, RE meta-analysis (forest plot), meta-regression (relationship between mean age and effect sizes), funnel plots, Egger's and Begg's tests for publication bias and small study effects. Results: A total of 17 relevant studies, which were either cross-sectional or observational by design, were included in the meta-analysis. Reported effect sizes were within computed confidence intervals (CI) at 95%. The computed Q test of homogeneity was 61.94. The overall mean effect size of 1.43 (95% CI of 0.985-1.883) was statistically significant at a 5% level (Z = 6.26; p 0.001). The I-squared = 62.17% (p = 0.00) confirmed moderate heterogeneity and the Q-value of 61.94 (p = 0.00) rejected the null hypothesis that the effect size was the same in all the studies. The funnel plot showed that the remaining majority of 13 studies were within the funnel plot on the right-hand side of the line of no effect. Conclusion: These results provide evidence of associations between visual functions and RTAs, and highlight the need for targeted interventions and further research to address the challenges associated with impaired visual functions and road safety.Contributions: The study contributes to the understanding of the implications of visual functions for road safety.

Abstract:Importance Vision impairment and psychosocial function, including symptoms of depression and anxiety and social isolation, are a major cause of morbidity in the US. However, there is a lack of nationally representative studies assessing associations between both objective and subjective vision impairment with psychosocial function following the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective To provide updated national estimates on the associations of vision impairment with depressive and anxiety symptoms and social isolation in US adults 65 years and older. Design, Setting, and Participants This was a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Aging Trends Study round 9 (2019) and 11 (2021), a nationally representative sample of Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 years and older. Binocular distance visual acuity, near visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity were tested. Objectively measured vision impairment was defined as having vision impairment in either distance visual acuity (worse than 20/40), near visual acuity (worse than 20/40), or contrast sensitivity (worse than 1.55 logCS). Self-reported vision impairment was defined based on participants’ report on their vision status. Data were analyzed in May 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures Depressive and anxiety symptoms assessed via the Patient Health Questionnaire. Social isolation was defined based on living arrangement, communication frequency, and activity participation responses. Results Among 2822 community-dwelling adults sampled from a population of 26 182 090, the mean (SD) age was 78.5 (5.6) years; 1605 individuals (54.7%) were female; 1077 (32.3%) had objectively measured vision impairment, and 203 (6.4%) had self-reported vision impairment. In adjusted models, all outcomes were significantly associated with objectively measured vision impairment, including depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR], 1.81; 95% CI, 1.26-2.58), anxiety symptoms (OR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.13-2.67), and severe social isolation (OR, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.05-3.87). Similarly, depressive symptoms (OR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.44-3.88) and anxiety symptoms (OR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.09-4.05) but not severe social isolation symptoms (OR, 2.07; 95% CI, 0.78-5.49) were significantly associated with self-reported vision impairment. Conclusions and Relevance In this study, vision impairment was associated with several psychosocial outcomes, including symptoms of depression and anxiety and social isolation. These findings provide evidence to support prioritizing research aimed at enhancing the health and inclusion of people with vision impairment.

Abstract:Background: Visual impairment is a risk factor for cognitive impairment and hallucinations in older adults, but associations with other neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) of dementia have not been examined. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Aging, Demographics, and Memory Study (ADAMS), a nationally representative sample of the US population aged 70+ years. Vision was measured by self-report and using a near card. Dementia was ascertained through cognitive testing with expert consensus, and NPS were screened using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. We used logistic regression to measure the association between visual impairment and prevalent NPS adjusting for sociodemographic factors and comorbidities. Analyses incorporated sample weights to account for the complex survey design of ADAMS. Results: Of 624 participants with dementia, 332 (53%) had self-reported visual impairment and 193 (31%) had best-corrected acuity of 20/40 or worse. In unadjusted models, self-reported visual impairment was significantly associated with hallucinations (OR 2.88; 95% CI 1.12-7.44), depression (OR 2.79; 95% CI 1.7-4.57), and agitation (OR 1.61; 95% CI 1.05-2.48). Reduced visual acuity was associated with hallucinations (OR 10.13; 95% CI 2.93-34.98), psychosis (OR 6.69, 95% CI 2.53-17.7), and mania (OR 5.92, 95% CI 1.77-19.82). However, these associations did not remain significant after covariate adjustment. Conclusions: Visual impairment was associated with hallucinations, depression, agitation, psychosis, and mania in patients with dementia, but at least some of this relationship is explained by age, comorbidities, and other factors.
Impact of Vision Impairment and Ocular Morbidity and Their Treatment on Depression and Anxiety in Children: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Topic: This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes existing evidence to establish whether vision impairment, ocular morbidity, and their treatment are associated with depression and anxiety in children. Clinical relevance: Understanding and quantifying these associations support early detection and management of mental health symptoms in children with vision impairment and ocular morbidity. Additionally, this review provides evidence in favor of insurance coverage for timely strabismus surgery. Methods: We searched 9 electronic databases from inception through February 18, 2021, including observational and interventional studies assessing whether vision impairment, ocular morbidity, or both and their treatment are associated with depression, anxiety, or both in children. We used narrative synthesis and meta-analysis with the residual maximum likelihood method. A protocol was registered and published on The International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (identifier: CRD42021233323). Results: Among 28 992 studies, 28 956 studies (99.9%) were excluded as duplicates or unrelated content. Among 36 remaining studies, 21 studies (58.3%) were observational studies concerning vision impairment, 8 studies (22.2%) were observational studies concerning strabismus, and 7 studies (19.4%) were interventional studies. Vision impaired children demonstrated significantly higher scores of depression (standard mean difference [SMD], 0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.26-0.89; 11 studies) and anxiety (SMD, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.40-0.83; 14 studies) than normally sighted children. In particular, children with myopia demonstrated higher scores of depression (SMD, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.36-0.81; 6 studies) than normally sighted children. Strabismus surgery significantly improved symptoms of depression (SMD, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.12-1.06; 3 studies) and anxiety (SMD, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.25-1.14; 4 studies) in children. Conclusion: Among children, vision impairment is associated with greater symptoms of depression and anxiety. Surgical treatment of strabismus improved these symptoms. Further randomized controlled trials exploring the impact of public health measures for myopia correction on mental health in children are needed. Scaling up access to strabismus surgery could improve the mental health of affected children.
Association between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and vision problems. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Aim: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis assessing whether vision and/or eye disorders are associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Method: Based on a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42022328485), we searched PubMed, Web of Knowledge/Science, Ovid Medline, Embase and APA PsycINFO up to 5th February 2022, with no language/type of document restrictions. We included observational studies 1) reporting at least one measure of vision in people of any age with a diagnosis of ASD based on DSM or ICD criteria, or ADOS; or 2) reporting the prevalence of ASD in people with and without vision disorders. Study quality was assessed with the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS). Random-effects meta-analyses were used for data synthesis. Results: We included 49 studies in the narrative synthesis and 46 studies in the meta-analyses (15,629,159 individuals distributed across multiple different measures). We found meta-analytic evidence of increased prevalence of strabismus (OR = 4.72 [95% CI: 4.60, 4.85]) in people with versus those without ASD (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 1.0545, p = 0.7881). We also found evidence of increased accommodation deficits (Hedge's g = 0.68 [CI: 0.28, 1.08]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 6.9331, p = 0.0741), reduced peripheral vision (-0.82 [CI: -1.32, -0.33]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 4.8075, p = 0.4398), reduced stereoacuity (0.73 [CI: -1.14, -0.31]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 0.8974, p = 0.3435), increased color discrimination difficulties (0.69 [CI: 0.27,1.10]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 9.9928, p = 0.1890), reduced contrast sensitivity (0.45 [CI: -0.60, -0.30]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 9.9928, p = 0.1890) and increased retinal thickness (=0.29 [CI: 0.07, 0.51]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 0.8113, p = 0.9918) in ASD. Discussion: ASD is associated with some self-reported and objectively measured functional vision problems, and structural alterations of the eye, even though we observed several methodological limitations in the individual studies included in our meta-analyses. Further research should clarify the causal relationship, if any, between ASD and problems of vision during early life. Prospero registration: CRD42022328485.
The social determinants of suicide: an umbrella review

Abstract:Previous research has highlighted the role of social determinants of health on mental health outcomes, but their impact on suicide mortality is less understood. The aim of this umbrella review was to systematically examine the association between 10 social determinants of health, as defined by the World Health Organization, and suicide mortality. A keyword search of titles and abstracts was conducted in six digital databases for studies published to 24 August 2023. Inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed systematic reviews and meta-analyses in English examining the association between these determinants and suicide. Methodological quality was assessed using an adapted AMSTAR-2 tool. Due to significant heterogeneity in the included studies, a meta-analysis was not undertaken. A narrative synthesis, structured by social determinant, was conducted. 49 records (25 meta-analyses and 24 systematic reviews) were eligible for inclusion in this review. The social determinants with the most available evidence were housing, basic amenities and the environment (n=21), income and social protection (n=13), unemployment (n=8) and early childhood development (n=6). Limited evidence was identified for education (n=3), social inclusion and non-discrimination (n=3) and working life conditions (n=3). No reviews examined the relationship between affordable healthcare services, structural conflict or food insecurity and suicide mortality. There was evidence of a modest effect of social determinants on suicide mortality. Most evidence related to unemployment, job insecurity, income and social protection and childhood adversity. The methodological quality of the included reviews varied considerably. High-quality research fully exploring the relationship between social and environmental factors and suicide risk is needed.

Abstract:Despite the influence of the integrated motivational-volitional (IMV) 1 model on research and practice, the supporting literature has not been systematically synthesised. This systematic review aims to synthesise the literature testing the IMV model of suicidal behaviour. Using citation and database searching, PsycINFO, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for studies referencing the IMV model (last searched on 28th March 2023). Included studies empirically tested the hypotheses of the model. Quality assessment was conducted using the National Institute of Health tool. Findings from 98 records (100 studies, 138,365 participants) were narratively synthesised. Results from studies directly testing the hypothesised pathways of the model supported the defeat-entrapment-suicidal ideation pathway of the IMV model. Case–control studies comparing differences between control, ideation, and enactment groups were consistent with hypotheses in univariate and cross-sectional analyses. However, support for the model was mixed for case–control multivariate and prospective studies. Due to low overlap in variables studied, the role of specific pre-motivational phase variables and stage-specific moderators was inconclusive. The studies received overall good quality ratings. The IMV model presents a promising framework for understanding and preventing suicide. Defeat, entrapment, and key variables may be useful in informing suicide prevention measures.
