Abstract:In this paper I use two case studies to show how corpus linguistics can be used to help in the teaching of business English. Senior managers in global companies often find themselves having to do their job in a foreign language. Given that language is one of the key tools of management, the senior managers are normally very keen to develop a sophisticated command of what they perceive to be key lexis. Consequently, the business English teacher may be required to answer searching and demanding questions in a very precise and accurate way. In this paper I show how a corpus-based investigation of the collocational behaviour of key lexis can be used to answer many of these questions. For example, a study of this kind can reveal the different senses of a word and show how it may be associated with a particular semantic prosody. By studying the collocations associated with a group of so-called synonyms it is often possible to identify slight but significant differences in the meaning of the words in the group.

Abstract:Computer-aided text analyses have gained a lot of attention recently. Applied to different types of business communication such as earnings announcements, analyst reports, or IPO prospectuses, they have been used to extract relevant information for financial market participants. A large number of studies employ dictionary-based approaches by referring to specific word lists. Since these lists have been predominantly compiled for the English language, the respective analyses have focused on English business texts. In order to amplify the application of content analyses to other languages, we create a German dictionary designed to measure the textual sentiment of business communication. Our dictionary is based on the English dictionary by Loughran and McDonald (J Finance 66:35–65. 10.1111/j.1540-6261.2010.01625.x, 2011), which is commonly used for examining finance- and accounting-specific texts. We discuss the set-up of our dictionary and extensively test its quality. We further compare our dictionary to German general language dictionaries and to a machine-learning procedure and provide evidence for its ability to capture market-relevant textual sentiment of German business communication.

There is relatively little published and practice is materials rather than research-led. This paper reviews developments in Business English using findings from articles, dissertations, reports and teaching material and considers the constructs that underlie much of the published teaching material. An interdisciplinary approach is called for to take account of language, interpersonal communication skills, business know-how and cultural issues.

Abstract:This article investigates lexical gender in specialized communication. The key method of analysis is that of forms of address, professional titles, and ‘generic man’ in a 10 million word corpus of written Business English. After a brief introduction and literature review on both gender in specialized communication and similar corpus-based views of lexical gender in General English, the results obtained are explained. Mixed results were found. On the one hand, the ‘male-as-norm’ principle contributes to reinforcing typical gender stereotypes: for example, for each woman referred to in the corpus, there are more than 100 occurrences for man. On the other hand, advocates of non-sexist English have also influenced written Business English: for example, Ms is more than 9 times as frequent as Mrs. and Miss, which sustains the claim that equates Ms with professional settings. This article ends by discussing the ways in which the research findings of this study could positively impact upon the teaching of Business English.

Abstract:Business people in the English‐speaking world tend to underrate the significance of language skills in general, and in particular, the importance of variation within the English language. This article considers the various types of English that are spoken throughtout the world and the implications for business transactions. Attention is paid to the problems that arise owing to the use of one type of English as opposed to another owing to the various forms of distortion and misunderstanding that arise. Attitudes towards different varieties of English are also considered in terms of a possible negative impact on negotiation of business dealings in general. The impact of ways of learning English is outlined and some suggestions made as to how to overcome the problems that arise through intra‐language variation in business.

Problems and Reform of Business English Translation Teaching in the Background of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:Abstract In order to solve the problems of business English translation teaching, a corpus-based teaching model is proposed. The API and web crawler are used to collect data from the business English corpus, and the overall corpus structure design is completed according to the acquired data. The corpus is pre-processed with lexical processing, theme extraction, category labeling, and other operations to ensure the feasibility of the corpus. The limitations of traditional business English translation teaching are highlighted, and the structure and implementation process of the corpus-based business English translation teaching model are thoroughly examined. The research subjects are selected, and experimental comparisons are applied empirically to analyze the corpus-based business English translation teaching. The data show that the mean translation score of the experimental group increased by 8.1247. In contrast, the mean translation score of the control group not only didn’t improve but also decreased by 0.8806, and the mean interpreting score of the experimental group increased by 0.608. In contrast, the mean interpreting score of the control group increased by 0.172, which indicates that the corpus-based business English teaching mode has a facilitating effect on the improvement of the student’s abilities in all aspects of English.

Abstract:The status of English in the global arena has become an irreplaceable and unparalleled one. The language has become apparent and prominent in the key aspects of trade and commerce for the last two decades or more. Though the first spread of the language was due to colonial expansion, it has attained a level of being considered a standard and common one for all official communications by and large particularly in the countries where a vast number of regional and native languages are spoken. English, indeed, is not the most widely spoken language on the earth if it is taken in terms of number of native speakers. It has become a prominent language as it is spoken by people around the world – 350 million of 6 billion people. In case of International business, it is the only language that has occupied a great space revealing the importance of the language. This paper brings to light how English as a language is used for business communication in the corporate sectors. The business at global level is conducted across borders of countries with English as a principal language. The use of language provides many benefits such as helping the concern grow and succeed, invigorating trust among colleagues and clients, strengthening the relationship with everyone in and out the concern, escalating the skill set of individuals along with commanding lucrative packages and embellishing the international relationship by means of cultural understanding.

Abstract:With the continuing globalisation of markets and internationalisation of trade, professionals from a wide range of organisations, from large multinational corporations to small to medium size enterprises, are increasingly coming together to do business in the international workplace, particularly in meetings. Such international events usually bring together people from different linguistic and socio-cultural backgrounds with the result that a common language of communication is frequently adopted. More often than not this lingua franca is English. While English for International Business (EIB) has an essential function as a lingua franca in multilingual settings, it can also present challenges both linguistically and culturally, particularly as more and more interactions are between speakers whose first language is not English.This paper reports on preliminary research which forms part of a larger scale study investigating the use of English as a lingua franca in international business meetings. The paper summarises the findings of a questionnaire exploring the use of EIB by a particular European business organisation. It is hoped that the limited findings will help shed light on some of the language issues that may be present in such international contexts and the possible communications difficulties and frustrations that can result. A positive result is that as well as uncovering some of these challenges, the analysis also shows an awareness by many participants of some of the strategies that can be used to overcome them.

Abstract:This exploratory research presents the implementation and evaluation of the effects of integrating corpus consultation with business English writing instruction. The subjects consisted of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners enrolled in two undergraduate business English writing classes. Two groups of EFL students were randomly assigned, one group (<i>n</i> = 49) receiving corpus-based writing instruction constructed on a Moodle course management system (CMS), while the other group (<i>n</i> = 58) was given traditional lecture-based instruction. A mixed methods design combining qualitative and quantitative approaches has been chosen to investigate the overall effect of the corpus-based intervention on the improvement of business letter writing performance in aspects of lexical and syntactic complexity, as well as learners' perceptions. The comparison of the pre- and post-tests of writing revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups after the instruction. Significant differences in students' lexical and syntactic complexity were found between the pre- and post-test of the experimental group. Further, in response to a questionnaire survey and interview, the students stated they improved their writing skills regarding vocabulary, syntactic structure and content in general, and their writing confidence and linguistics awareness were also enhanced. The results suggest that the corpus provides useful resources to supplement existing materials.

Abstract:Abstract Language genre is a form of language expression formed by certain people from specific purposes in a particular context, and no form of language expression can exist independently of genre characteristics. The study adopts the space vector model to digitally represent the potential semantics of business English translation. By constructing a translation-word matrix and applying the TF-IDF method to calculate the weights of the elements in the matrix, the study proceeded to perform a singular value decomposition of the matrix. This process helps to extract the features of corpora similarity in business English translation, which in turn completes the construction of a language model for business English translation. The study selected a business English translation corpus for instance analysis. The data results show that in the interaction and information feature analysis, the mean values of ECQ (interaction feature quantitative value) features are higher than TCQ (information feature quantitative value) in three different periods, with the differences of 0.0992, 0.0534 and 0.043 respectively. Regarding the standardized scores of the stylistic features, 24 stylistic feature indexes meet the standardization requirements, accounting for 75% of the total indexes. This finding provides an essential basis for understanding the differences between Business English and other stylistic features. The research in this paper has significant application value for professionals in business English translation.

Abstract:The COMENEGO (Corpus Multilingüe de Economía y Negocios [Multilingual Economics and Business Corpus]) project aims to compile a corpus that will be freely available online and useful for LSP trainers, translators, trainee translators and translator trainers. The project’s stages include designing a virtual platform for access to the corpus’s texts, and compiling and analysing a pilot corpus to evaluate the proposed text categories, which will be used as a means of filtering searches in the corpus once it is online. Many text classifications are based on prior experience or other classifications and are never empirically validated. While the classification proposed here draws on previous proposals and observation of the professional and academic arenas, we have also looked to validate it empirically, and it is that validation with which this paper is concerned. We have used corpus linguistics tools to analyse metadiscourse in three subcorpora (English, French and Spanish), taking Hyland’s (2005) work as a basis in the case of English, to determine if our proposed categories have internal linguistic characteristics that support or confirm their taxonomic validity

Abstract:Business news articles are crucial for Business English students since they provide a rich source for learning vocabulary in their field of study and professional communication. This study investigates lexico-grammatical items specific to a specialised corpus of online business news reports. Its overall aim is twofold: 1) to generate a keywords list extracted from the self-built corpus; and 2) to identify lexical collocations of the first ten keywords. Seven hundred online business news articles from BBC news.com were compiled to build a corpus of business news. The data were analysed by the application of Antconc 3.5.9 developed by Anthony (2020). The results derived from the present study through a corpus-based analysis uncovered a list of keywords which were frequently used in online business news where the majority of the keywords were nouns (63.51%), verbs/nouns (8%), adjectives (7%), adjectives/nouns (4%), adverbs (2%), and verb (1%). From the selected top one hundred keywords, the lexical collocations of each keyword were identified with 3 combination types based on the set framework adapted from Benson et al.’s (2010). The obtained combination types include Adjective+Noun (40%), Noun+Noun (35%), and Noun+Verb (20%), respectively. Abstract:This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the transformational changes observed in English business discourse over time. Employing cutting-edge methodologies such as functional linguistics, linguosynergetics, and diachronic analysis, the authors delve into the evolutionary dynamics of business communication, examining the extralinguistic factors that drive the inner discursive mechanisms of self-regulation and modification of the functional field. By highlighting these factors, the study sheds light on the complex interplay between language, society, and cognition in shaping business communication. Drawing on a rich corpus of oral and written English business discourse spanning from the late 19th century to the present day, the research reveals that the rise of new tendencies in social and political life, coupled with the historical development of British and American societies, have sparked changes in the cognitive models of structuring speech behavior in business verbal interaction. Consequently, new trends have emerged, including simplification, deregulation, deviation from communicative norms of standardized Business English, and popularization of unconventional, non-standard business rhetoric.

An analysis of business English coursebooks from an ELF perspective

Abstract:Abstract This study analysed a series of business English coursebooks published and used in the Chinese context from an English as a lingua franca (ELF) perspective. The analysis was conducted from four aspects: language ownership, language exposure, language activities, and cultural representations. These address four key issues in the debate over the practicality of ELF-informed materials. The findings show an orientation towards native English speakers as representatives of English users, a dominance of native-speaker Standard English in language exposure, a lack of ELF-informed activities, and a limited representation of Chinese culture. This article concludes that the coursebooks merely introduce ELF as a cultural and linguistic phenomenon. Despite some attempts to present the role of ELF in the global business community, there is a paucity of ELF exposure and ELF-informed activities. The implications of these findings for the selection and evaluation of ELF-informed materials are discussed.
