In this personal memoir of my lifelong collaborator and friend, Herb Gintis, I reflect on his "A Radical Analysis of Welfare Economics and Individual Development." Abstract:In this final essay, we summarize some of the main themes of this special issue of the Roeper Review dedicated to the scholarly and educational contributions of Marcia Gentry. Our goal is to provide a broad sweep of her contributions: Specifics can be found in the individual articles. We cover as themes (a) the term "gifted," (b) identification, (c) abilities, (d) opportunity, (e) twice-exceptionalities, (f) gifted programs, and (g) systemic failures, followed by our brief conclusions. Marcia was one of the truly great contributors to the field of gifted education, and her legacy will live long after her untimely death.

Abstract:When Marcia Gentry died last year, our field lost a fierce champion for inclusion and equity. In this article, I reflect on her work and the ways in which her early research helped to develop her interests in identifying and supporting the talent development of culturally diverse students. This early research on Enrichment Clusters was facilitated in two urban schools with diverse populations and the insights gained from this work contributed to her beliefs on talent development, more open and equitable identification, and enrichment opportunities for all students.

Abstract:Abstract This introduction considers the highly influential contribution of Douglass C. North to economic history and institutional economics, as it developed from the 1960s until his death in 2015. It sketches the evolution of his arguments concerning the roles of institutions, organizations and human agency. North's conception of the economic actor became progressively more sophisticated, by acknowledging the role of ideology and adopting insights from cognitive science. Eventually, he abandoned the proposition that institutions are generally efficient, to propose instead that sub-optimal institutional forms could persist. A few noted criticisms of North's work are also considered here, ranging from those which are arguably off the mark, to others that retain some force. The contributions to this memorial issue are outlined at the end of this introduction.

Abstract:Abstract This contribution commemorates Geert Hofstede, who recently passed away, as a pioneer in the study of culture and institutions. It does so by touching on some of the details of his personal life and connecting these with his professional career. The latter was devoted to developing the paradigm of national cultures based on empirical analysis, and to relate it to organisational behaviour. Closer scrutiny reveals that four distinct phases may be identified. Hofstede first started as an ‘undercover’ engineer and next moved to social psychology. During the second phase, he developed the first four dimensions of natural culture. During the third, Hofstede connected these national dimensions to organisational ones. During the last, he added two new cultural dimensions and developed additional practical applications. Finally, the article considers the reception, criticism, and further elaborations of Hofstede's contributions.

Abstract:We pay tribute to Marshall Joffe, PhD, and his substantial contributions to the field of causal inference with focus in biostatistics and epidemiology. By compiling narratives written by us, his colleagues, we not only present highlights of Marshall's research and their significance for causal inference but also offer a portrayal of Marshall's personal accomplishments and character. Our discussion of Marshall's research notably includes (but is not limited to) handling of posttreatment variables such as noncompliance, employing G-estimation for treatment effects on failure-time outcomes, estimating effects of time-varying exposures subject to time-dependent confounding, and developing a causal framework for case-control studies. We also provide a description of some of Marshall's unpublished work, which is accompanied by a bonus anecdote. We discuss future research directions related to Marshall's research. While Marshall's impact in causal inference and the world outside of it cannot be wholly captured by our words, we hope nonetheless to present some of what he has done for our field and what he has meant to us and to his loved ones.

Abstract:This article commemorates the late Judit Bar-Ilan by illuminating her academic career from bibliometric and altmetric perspectives. We analyze Judit's publication output demonstrating her standing in the international scientometric community. Her co-authorship network spans 99 researchers from 27 countries. An analysis of title terms highlights how her research interest developed over the course of her 30-year career. As Judit was one of the "founding mothers" of the still young field of altmetrics, we also investigate how her publications were shared on social media. We group Twitter users into eleven user categories and analyze how those sharing the same publication are following each other. An analysis of the geolocations of Twitter users demonstrates that Judit's work was discussed worldwide, in particular in Europe and North America. The bibliometric and altmetric analyses confirm that Judit was an outstanding researcher, a supportive mentor and a great colleague. She will be missed.

Abstract:Declining labor force participation of older men throughout the 20th century and recent increases in participation have generated substantial interest in understanding the effect of public pensions on retirement. The National Bureau of Economic Research's International Social Security (ISS) Project, a long-term collaboration among researchers in a dozen developed countries, has explored this and related questions. The project employs a harmonized approach to conduct within-country analyses that are combined for meaningful cross-country comparisons. The key lesson is that the choices of policy makers affect the incentive to work at older ages and these incentives have important effects on retirement behavior.

Abstract:This editorial introduces an on-line Special Collection of articles centred on an appraisal of the idea of "gene" by one of the journal Board members, Keith Baverstock (2021). The Collection is timely, since it has come together soon after publication of an important and rigorous test of the predictive utility of polygenic scores, showing a disappointing predictive utility (Hingorani et al, 2023). I will return to the significance of that study after introducing the Collection.

Abstract:Background: John M. Opitz, a towering figure in both stature and scientific achievement, left an indelible mark on the fields of genetics, pediatrics, and embryology. Born in 1935 in Hamburg to a Jewish family, Opitz's early life was marked by adversities. Despite these challenges, he pursued a remarkable career, immigrating to the United States at 15 years and becoming a renowned scientist in institutions like Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin, where he made groundbreaking contributions to clinical genetics. Main body: A testament to his compassionate nature, Opitz dedicated himself to understanding and treating rare genetic disorders, earning him eponymous recognition in several medical conditions. His impact extended beyond academia, as evidenced by his collaborative efforts with Sicilian universities to advance clinical genetics in Italy. Opitz's teaching style emphasized simplicity, empathy, and meticulous clinical examination, leaving an indelible mark on students and colleagues. Conclusion: John M. Opitz's towering intellect, compassionate demeanor, and profound impact on medicine and genetics made him a figure of enduring significance. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the knowledge he transmitted, and the enduring friendships he forged. In remembering John Opitz, we honor not only a man, but also a myth-a symbol of resilience, humanity, and scientific excellence.

Abstract:A 14-year boy is given a microscope by his parents. It is not a toy – but a real microscope. He deploys it to rediscover the biology he had known before, but now in a magnified world. With extraordinary intellectual gifts he then, and manifestly later becomes absorbed by the idea that all this, however mysterious at first glance, might be subject to rational understanding, with painstaking study. Thus, was the genesis of one of the greatest cell biologists of the 20 th century, Joseph Grafton Gall, who died 12 September 2024, at 96. He had been professionally active up until only a few years ago. There was no one like him in the modern era of cell biology and there will not be another figure like him anytime soon.
