Abstract:Abstract Rechargeable aqueous zinc-organic batteries are promising energy storage systems with low-cost aqueous electrolyte and zinc metal anode. The electrochemical properties can be systematically adjusted with molecular design on organic cathode materials. Herein, we use a symmetric small molecule quinone cathode, tetraamino-p-benzoquinone (TABQ), with desirable functional groups to protonate and accomplish dominated proton insertion from weakly acidic zinc electrolyte. The hydrogen bonding network formed with carbonyl and amino groups on the TABQ molecules allows facile proton conduction through the Grotthuss-type mechanism. It guarantees activation energies below 300 meV for charge transfer and proton diffusion. The TABQ cathode delivers a high capacity of 303 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 in a zinc-organic battery. With the increase of current density to 5 A g −1 , 213 mAh g −1 capacity is still preserved with stable cycling for 1000 times. Our work proposes an effective approach towards high performance organic electrode materials.

Abstract:Graphite was reported by J.O. Besenhard as the reservoir for alkali ions in 1974. The booming period of lithium-ion batteries arrived after the graphite patent issued by Sony Co. in 1991. The flourish development is due to the address of lithium dendrite issue through the substitution from lithium metal to graphite. Currently, the zinc dendrite formation in zinc-ion batteries is one of the major issues. Herein, we fabricate a zinc-ion full battery by replacing zinc metal with organic quinone, which is a zinc dendrite free material. This novel zinc-ion full battery exhibits excellent cycling stability with capacity retention of 94.4% and high specific capacity of 189.5 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles. Ascribed to the low cost of quinone and long cycle performance, this work could inaugurate a new era for rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Bipolar organic small molecules with dual advantages of n/p-type redox reactions can achieve high-capacity-voltage zinc-organic batteries (ZOBs), but are plagued by inevitable dissolution in aqueous electrolytes. Here a hydrogen bonding-stabilized bipolar quinacridone (QA) molecule with synergetic coupling effects of two redox-active centers of n-type carbonyl moieties and p-type amine sites is proposed towards superior ZOBs. Compared with unipolar organics, bipolar QA molecule delivers low-energy-barrier redox kinetics and strong resistance to dissolution in aqueous electrolytes to avoid capacity decay due to the stable H-bond structure and extended π-conjugated aromatic plane. Consequently, Zn||QA battery harvests a high capacity of 212 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, an outstanding energy density (161 Wh kg−1), along with superior electrochemical stability (20,000 cycles). The high-kinetics hybrid anion-cation two-electron co-coordination mechanism in QA cathode is the root of excellent electrochemical metrics. This study opens novel insights to design multielectron bipolar cathodes for high-performance ZOBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc batteries are considered as one of the most promising energy storage systems for large-scale energy storage and wearable electronics, owing to their low cost and intrinsic safety. However, developing high-performance cathode materials with environmentally friendly is still an important task. Here, we demonstrate that two N-containing organic compounds, hexamethoxy hexaazatrinaphthylene (HMHATN) and hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATN), used as cathodes can exhibit high capacity with fast kinetics. Thus, the Zn//HMHATN and Zn//HATN full batteries display the high energy density of 160 and 221.6 W h Kg(-1), respectively, and long-term cycling stability. Electrochemical analysis, density functional theory calculation and ex situ analysis identify that the organic cathodes involve uptake and removal of Zn2+ and H+ in the discharging-charging process. Furthermore, the flexible aqueous Zn//HMHATN and Zn//HATN batteries fabricated also have high capacity, long-term cycling life and impressive energy density, displaying its application prospect in wearable electronics.

Here, we demonstrate that two N-containing organic compounds, hexamethoxy hexaazatrinaphthylene (HMHATN) and hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATN), used as cathodes can exhibit excellent reversible Zn2+ storage capability with fast kinetics and the high capacity of 542 and 963 mA h g-1, respectively. Abstract:Despite their intrinsic safety and cost-effectiveness, aqueous zinc (Zn)-organic batteries have been struggling with the rapid performance degradation arising from the poor reversibility of Zn anodes and the dissolution of cathodes. Here, we present a new aqueous eutectic electrolyte by coupling a hydrated Zn salt (Zn(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O) exclusively with a neutral ligand (succinonitrile) to mitigate these issues. The unique aqua Zn2+ solvates with a succinonitrile-assisted solvation shell enable an unusual Zn/Zn2+ reversibility of 98.4% Coulombic efficiency along with smooth Zn deposition. Moreover, all water molecules contribute to the formation of the eutectic network, resulting in a delayed oxidation and suppressed solvating ability. When a quinone-based polymermaterial (38 wt% sulfur content) is utilized as a cathode, the Zn-organic battery with this aqueous eutectic electrolyte exhibits an unprecedented cyclability with a low capacity decay rate (0.004% per cycle over 3,500 cycles) and superior low-temperature performance.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have received widespread consideration owing to non-toxicity, proper capacity, and abundant reserves. Among numerous cathode materials, organics with adjustable structures are prospective campaigners. Naphtha [2, 3-h] naphtha [2', 3': 7, 8] quinoxalino [2, 3-a] naphtha [2', 3': 7, 8] quinoxalino [2, 3-c] phenazine-5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30-hexaone (AQPH) with large conjugated structure is synthesized through convenient condensation reaction. As an organic cathode of AZIBs, multiple active sites endow AQPH with a decent capacity (297.7 mAh g −1 under 0.05 A g −1 ) and a brilliant cycling life (over 10,000 cycles under 10 A g −1 ). Simultaneously, large conjugated structure supplies AQPH with a rapid electron transfer rate, inducing a high Zn 2+ diffusion coefficient (3.3 × 10 −10 ∼2.6 × 10 −8 cm 2 s −1 ) and an outstanding rate ability (96.7 mAh g −1 under 20 A g −1 ). Furthermore, theoretical calculations and ex-situ characterizations prove that CO and CN are the active sites of Zn 2+ storage. This work demonstrates that expanded conjugated structure and increased active centers of organic molecules are beneficial for accomplishing sustainable high-performance AZIBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc (Zn) batteries have long been considered a potentially more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries because of their better environmental compatibility, enhanced safety and cost advantage. However, in the presence of an aqueous electrolyte, the Zn anode is poised to undergo dendrite failure, corrosion and hydrogen evolution, all of which resonate with each other leading to fast performance degradation. Here, in a break from the current aqueous battery path, we report a low-cost hydrous organic electrolyte involving a hydrated Zn(BF4)2 salt and an ethylene glycol solvent, which not only promotes the in situ formation of a favourable ZnF2 passivation layer to protect Zn from dendrite growth and side reactions but also embraces excellent non-flammability. Remarkably, the present Zn anode sustains a long-term cycling over 4,000 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2 with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% and shows an areal capacity as high as 5 mAh cm−2. Equally intriguingly, the electrolyte can run across a wide temperature range from −30 °C to 40 °C without seriously compromising performance. The Zn//V2O5 full cells with our electrolyte also perform much better in terms of capacity retention than a device with an aqueous ZnSO4 electrolyte. Our findings suggest a promising direction for developing electrolyte solutions for practical Zn batteries which combine safety, performance and sustainability.

Abstract:A rational rocking‐chair configuration of all‐organic aqueous zinc‐ion batteries is proposed to realize outstanding electrochemical performance with high utilization, which is demonstrated to be easily disassembled and recycled by incineration treatment, ensuring excellent environmental sustainability. Despite their safe and cost‐effective merits, the cycling durability of aqueous zinc–organic batteries is hindered by cathode dissolution and low coulombic efficiency of Zn metal anodes. Herein, a Zn metal‐free all‐organic zinc‐ion battery (ZIB) is proposed by using quinoxalino[2,3‐i]diquinoxalino[2′,3′:6,7]quinoxalino[2,3‐a:2,3‐c] phenazine (QDPA) cathode coupled with a 1,4,5,8‐Naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (NPI) anode, rendering excellent electrochemical reversibility with high utilization. Based on the molecular architecture strategy, a QDPA cathode with an enlarged aromatic ring system is designed and synthesized, which not only effectively inhibits structural collapse during cycling but also enhances the working voltage without lowering the active group ratio. Moreover, theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm the rapid H+ storage mechanism in the CN active sites of QDPA, affording ultra‐fast electrochemical kinetics. Thus, it delivers a negligible capacity decay of 0.002% up to 13 000 cycles at 20 A g−1. Moreover, the QDPA//NPI all‐organic aqueous ZIB with a high energy density of 43.1 Wh kg−1 is demonstrated to be easily disassembled and recycled by the incineration treatment after battery failure, ensuring outstanding environmental sustainability.

Abstract:Energy sustainable development has stimulated the pursuit of an eco-friendly energy storage system. Carbon peak and neutrality targets oriented energy storage development will guide the way of further studies on batteries system. However, conventional batteries system (lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries) based on ungreen transition metal oxide, flammable electrolytes or hazardous metals cannot keep pace with the development of society sooner or later. Thus, vast explorations on the advanced rechargeable battery systems were conducted. Compared with other battery systems, zinc ion battery systems with inherent safety, low cost was widely investigated. Especially, the zinc organic batteries based on the eco-efficiency organic cathode were promising alternative advanced batteries for future energy storage systems. Therefore, various organics and different electrochemistry mechanisms were explored in the zinc batteries system. Herein, a timely review on elaborate analysis about functional groups, fundamentals, progress accompanied by the discussion on the four core issues: voltage, capacity, rate performance, cycle life was presented. Specifically, aiming at these issues, three levels of solution strategies: materials design concepts, morphology structure optimization and electrolyte environment were summarized and proposed for the development and innovation of zinc organic batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) are environment-friendly batteries with good application prospects. However, their applications are plagued by the dendrite growth of Zn anodes and the absence of suitable cathodes. Herein, we design and realize high-performance AZBs by using an organic cathode of 5,7,12,14-pentacenetetrone (PT) and a trimethyl phosphate (TMP)/water hybrid electrolyte. The COMSOL simulations and spectroscopy studies collectively demonstrate a strong interaction between TMP and Zn2+, thus changing the solvation structure and suppressing the parasitic reactions, finally enabling dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping. The hybrid electrolyte shows good compatibility with the PT cathode. As a consequence, the Zn//PT full cell employing the hybrid electrolyte exhibits remarkable capacity (229.4 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), extraordinary rate performance, and long-term cycling (84.18% retention after 9600 cycles) at a wide temperature range (−20 to 65 °C).

Abstract:The development of zinc batteries with advantages of high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness is energetic in recent years because of the increasing requirement on large-scale energy storage systems for integrating renewable energy in the power grid. However, there are still significant challenges in the way of commercialization of aqueous zinc batteries, such as parasitic reaction, zinc dendrite, and structure collapse and dissolution of cathode materials. This review summarizes the Zn2+ storage mechanism of cathode materials and the challenges in front of electrode materials and aqueous electrolyte. Meanwhile, corresponding solutions and points that should be paid attention for commercialization are discussed.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) with Zn metal anodes stand out as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage systems, owing to their high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the commercialization of AZIBs is plagued by issues such as Zn dendrite growth and side reactions. Herein, an organic component-Cu metal composite layer is constructed on Zn anode (Org-Cu@Zn) by a novel, one-step and in situ spontaneous displacement reaction. The outer porous organic layer with functional groups may serve as migration sites and transport channels for Zn2+ ions, promoting transfer kinetics. The inner zincophilic Cu clusters layer diminishes the interfacial resistance, facilitating Zn2+ ions diffusion and even Zn deposition. Compared to the bare Zn, the unique dual-layer structure exhibits stronger zincophilicity, smaller interface resistance, lower nucleation energy barrier, and stronger anti-corrosion capability, thus effectively suppressing the Zn dendrite growth and side reactions. Remarkably, the Org-Cu@Zn electrode shows an ultra-long lifespan of 3600 h (1800 cycles) with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.7 %, realizes long cycling stability over 4300 h (1 mA cm-2) and 1350 h (5 mA cm-2), and assures the stable operation of Org-Cu@Zn||ZVO full cells with cointype configurations.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries hold significant promise as a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries for energy storage applications. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the charge storage mechanism, electrode materials, electrolyte considerations, and electrode interface challenges in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The complex charge storage mechanism involving zinc ion movement between the cathode and zinc metal anode is discussed in detail. Anode and cathode material selections and design strategies are explored, highlighting their pivotal roles in determining battery performance, energy density, cycle lifespan, and stability. The critical influence of electrolyte choice and design on battery performance is also elucidated, emphasizing the interplay between high ionic conductivity, stability, temperature range, and cost. The paper further delves into the challenges and advancements related to optimizing the electrode interface, addressing issues such as dendrite growth, electrode passivation, and side reactions. Finally, future research directions and strategies to overcome current limitations are outlined, underscoring the potential of aqueous zinc-ion batteries as a viable and sustainable energy storage solution.

Here we propose ethylene glycol (EG) as additional agent of water blocker to form localized high‐concentration electrolyte for aqueous Zn batteries. This unique solvation structure inhibits hydrate formation and constrains Zn 2+ and SO 4 2‐ to form closer ion association, which alleviates the undesired H 2 evolution and enables dendrite‐free Zn plating/stripping. Accordingly, Zn//PQ‐MCT (phenanthrenequinone macrocyclic trimer) full cell with such electrolyte exhibits a super‐long life (more than 8000 cycles). Furthermore, this EG‐based aqueous electrolyte shows the metrics of nonflammability, low cost, and effective water retention in the open atmosphere, endowing aqueous Zn batteries with excellent safety performance and easy operability in practical application.
