Abstract:Purpose This cross-sectional study investigated the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration and myopia in two groups of Chinese children aged 6–14 years from different geographic and economic locations. Methods A total of 294 children from a lowland area and 89 from a highland area were enrolled as two groups of study subjects. The visual acuity, ocular biometry, and automated refraction were measured. The serum level of 25(OH)D was determined by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Near vision and outdoor exposure durations were assessed with a questionnaire interview. Data were analyzed for differences using Chi-square and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. The risk factors were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Results We found that the serum level of 25(OH)D of the subjects from lowland area was 20.9 ng/mL which was higher than that of subjects from highland area (16.9 ng/mL). The median spherical equivalent refraction (SER) was −0.25 diopters(D) in lowland subjects and −0.63D in highland subjects. The prevalence of myopia was 45.2% in lowland subjects and 55.1% in highland subjects. The average axial length was similar, 23.6 mm and 23.1 mm in lowland and highland subjects, respectively. We found no statistical difference between the average SER and serum 25(OH)D concentration in subjects of either lowland or highland area. The ratio of myopia to non-myopia was also similar in subjects with three levels (sufficient, deficient, and insufficient) of serum 25(OH)D in these two areas. Conclusions There is no association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and myopia in the 6–14 years old Chinese children.

Abstract:European Journal of Ophthalmology, Ahead of Print. PurposeStudies have indicated that the observed association between vitamin D and myopia was confounded by time spent outdoors. This study aimed to elucidate this association using a national cross-sectional dataset.MethodsParticipants with 12 to 25 years who participated in non-cycloplegic vision exam from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001 to 2008 were included in the present study. Myopia was defined as spherical equivalent of any eyes ≤ −0.5 diopters (D).Results7,657 participants were included. The weighted proportion of emmetropes, mild myopia, moderate myopia, and high myopia were 45.5%, 39.1%, 11.6%, and 3.8%, respectively. After adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, TV/computer usage, and stratified by education attainment, every 10 nmol/L increment of serum 25(OH)D concentration was associated with a reduced risk of myopia (odds ratio [OR] = 0.96, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 0.93–0.99 for any myopia; OR = 0.96, 95%CI 0.93–1.00 for mild myopia; OR = 0.99, 95%CI 0.97–1.01 for moderate myopia; OR = 0.89, 95%CI 0.84–0.95 for high myopia). Serum 25(OH)D level was closely correlated with time spent outdoors. After categorizing time spent outdoors into quarters (low, low-medium, medium-high, and high), every 1 quarter increment of time spent outdoors was associated with 2.49 nmol/L higher serum 25(OH)D concentration. After adjusting for time spent outdoors, serum 25(OH)D level did not show significant association with myopia (OR = 1.01, 95%CI 0.94–1.06 for 10 nmol/L increment).ConclusionsThe association between high serum vitamin D and reduced risk of myopia is confounded by longer time spent outdoors. Evidence from the present study does not support that there is a direct association between serum vitamin D level with myopia.

Abstract:Background: myopia is associated with sight-threatening potential complications, and it becoming increasingly common globally. However, the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and myopia remains unclear and the evidence is controversial. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and myopia in the U.S. population. Subject and methods: this study used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2008 data. The logistic regression was applied to explore the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and myopia. Results: among the 14,051 participants, the prevalence of myopia was 33.2 % (4,668/14,051). In the multivariate regression models, serum 25(OH)D concentrations as continuous variable were non-significantly associated with the prevalence of myopia (adjusted OR, 0.98 [95 % CI, 0.97-1.00]) after adjusting all covariates. As a categorical variable, serum 25(OH)D compared with the lowest tertile, the adjusted ORs with increasing tertiles were 0.96 (95 % CI: 0.89,1.05) and 0.95 (95 % CI: 0.86, 1.06). In myopia participants, serum 25(OH)D concentrations were also non-significantly associated with the progress of myopia. In stratified analyses, the results remain stable with different ages, sex, and education parameters. Conclusions: serum 25(OH)D concentrations were non-significantly associated with myopia in the U.S. population. We need more prospective studies to provide evidence.
Effect of Low-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation on Serum 25(OH)D in School Children and White-Collar Workers.

Abstract:Objective: Our study aimed to investigate the nutritional vitamin D status of school children aged 9–15 years and white-collar workers in Zhejiang province, and evaluate the efficacy of low-dose-oral vitamin D supplementation in both populations. Methods: We conducted a prospective controlled trial during March 2014 to November 2015, comparing the efficacy of vitamin D supplements (400 IU/day) with non-intervention for 18 months in school children aged 9–15 years. Meanwhile, a before-after study was conducted among white-collar workers for 1 year. Serum 25(OH)D concentration was measured at baseline and after vitamin D supplementation, respectively. Results: At the baseline, 95% of school children and 84% of adult participants had vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL). In school children, no difference was observed between the intervention and control groups with regard to anthropometric data. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations of the school children intervention group, school children control group and white-collar workers were 12.77 ± 3.01 ng/mL, 14.17 ± 3.59 ng/mL and 16.58 ± 3.66 ng/mL at baseline and increased to 17.34 ± 3.78 ng/mL, 18.04 ± 4.01 ng/mL and 17.75 ± 5.36 ng/mL after vitamin D supplementation, respectively. Although, after adjusting for potential confounders, the 400 IU oral vitamin D supplementation increased serum 25(OH)D concentration in school children (β = 0.81, p = 0.0426) as well as in white-collar workers (p = 0.0839), the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was still very high among school children (79.23% in intervention group and 72.38% in control group) and white-collar workers (76.00%). Conclusions: High prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was common in these two study populations. Daily doses of 400 IU oral vitamin D supplementation was not able to adequately increase serum 25(OH)D concentrations. A suitable recommendation regarding the level of vitamin D supplementation is required for this Chinese population.

Abstract:Objectives: Vitamin D deficiency is common among older adults, but its association with physical function is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and disability in activities of daily living (ADL), mobility, and objective physical functioning among Chinese older adults. Methods: We used cross-sectional data of 2225 older adults (>= 65 years) who participated in the 2011/2012 main survey of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) and the 2012 biomarker sub-study. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured by enzyme immunoassay. Outcomes included ADL disability, mobility disability, and disability in three objective physical examinations (standing-up from a chair, picking-up a book from the floor, and turning-around 360 degrees). Results: The multiple regression models suggested that participants in the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency group had higher odds of ADL disability (OR: 4.08; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.81, 5.92), mobility disability (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.41), and disability in standing-up from a chair (OR: 2.43; 95% CI: 1.60, 3.69), picking up a book from the floor (OR: 3.09; 95% CI: 2.07, 4.60), and turning-around 360 degrees (OR: 3.09; 95% CI: 2.07, 4.60). Subgroup analyses revealed that some of the above associations (particularly those with mobility disability and disability in turning-around 360 degrees) were only statistically significant among the oldest-old. Conclusions: Among the oldest-old in China, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency was associated with disability in ADL, mobility, and objective physical functioning, highlighting the importance of managing the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level to promote healthy aging.

Abstract:Background: Vitamin D deficiency is considered to be a public health problem. However, the nutrient status of vitamin D in Chinese children is unclear. The aim of this study was to describe the vitamin D status among children aged under 18 years in southeast China. Methods: Children who visited the Huzhou Maternal and Child Care Hospital from January 2012 to August 2015 were included in this large cross-sectional study. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D) concentrations were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Vitamin D status was defined as deficiency (25(OH) D < 20 ng/mL), insufficiency (25(OH) D: 20-29 ng/mL) and sufficiency (25(OH) D >= 30 ng/mL). The association between relevant variables and vitamin D status was analyzed by a using generalized estimated equation model and a multivariate regression model. Results: 13,997 children aged under 18 years were included. Of these, 23.3% children suffered from low vitamin D status (deficiency and insufficiency), while 76.7% had a sufficient vitamin D status. The prevalence of low vitamin D status was 29.7% in winter and 23.4% in spring, which was higher than that in summer (21.4%) and autumn (19.9%). Clinical visiting children (32.1%) suffered more from low vitamin D than health examination children (17.6%). Additionally, age and season were independently and significantly associated with 25(OH) D concentrations, respectively. Conclusions: The deficiency and insufficiency status of vitamin D was very common among newborns and children aged one to 17 years. This indicates that more sunshine and vitamin D-fortified foods are necessary among Chinese children.

Abstract:Despite the importance of vitamin D in early stages of life, data are lacking on the levels of vitamin D intake and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-(OH)D) among Chinese school-age children. The aims of this study were to investigate the vitamin D intake and serum 25-(OH)D concentration of children aged 7 to 12 years in China, and to measure the associations between vitamin D status and children’s growth and development parameters. We obtained data on vitamin D intake, serum 25-(OH)D concentration, and anthropometric measurements from a cross-sectional study on school-aged children in China. Multiple linear regression and multivariable logistic regression analyses assessed the associations mentioned above. A total of 563 children (9.5 ± 1.6 years) from six areas of China were included. Among them, 86.1% had a vitamin D intake below the recommended nutrient intake (10 μg/day), and 54.7% had vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-(OH)D <15 ng/mL). We also found that high vitamin D intake was inversely associated with the risk of vitamin D deficiency (OR = 0.836, 95% confidence interval: 0.713, 0.980), and serum 25-(OH)D concentration was positively associated with the intelligence score and body mass index-for-age Z-score (BAZ) (p < 0.05). Insufficient vitamin D intake and serum 25-(OH)D are prevalent among Chinese school-aged children. A negative association was observed between vitamin D intake and the risk of vitamin D deficiency. Moreover, vitamin D status was positively associated with intelligence and BAZ, which await confirmation in future studies.
Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and immune-related markers in children with asthma

Abstract:Objective To investigate serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25-OH-D)levels and its relationships with eosinophils,IgE and cellular immune-related indicators in children with asthma exacerbations.Methods Serum 25-OH-D, IgE and cellular immune levels were measured by ELISA,chemiluminescence and flow cytometry separately,in 42 children with asthma exacerbations and 52 healthy children. Logistic regression analysis and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the correlations between serum 25-OH-D levels and immune-related markers in children with asthma. Results The level of serum 25-OH-D was significantly lower in children with asthma than that of healthy group(52.48 ± 15.53)vs(89.72 ± 41.38)nmol/L(P0.05).Serum 25-OH-D50 nmol/L was found in 42.9% of the children with asthma. When vitamin D level increased by 1 nmol/L,the risk of asthma would decrease as 0.948 times of origin(95% CI:0.926 to 0.971).There was a negative correlation between the level of serum 25-OH-D and the number of asthma exacerbations in the previous year,but a positive correlation between the level of serum 25-OH-D and CD4/CD8. No correlations were found between the level of 25-OH-D and eosinophils and IgE.Conclusion The level of vitamin D is lower in the children with asthma exacerbations. The level of vitamin D is associated with the cellular immune-related markers. Increasing of the level of vitamin D may be a protect factor against the risk of asthma.
Low serum vitamin D is associated with axial length and risk of myopia in young children

Abstract:The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and axial length (AL) and myopia in 6-year-old children. A total of 2666 children aged 6 years participating in the birth-cohort study Generation R underwent a stepwise eye examination. First, presenting visual acuity (VA) and AL were performed. Second, automated cycloplegic refraction was measured if LogMAR VA > 0.1. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was determined from blood using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Vitamin D related SNPs were determined with a SNP array; outdoor exposure was assessed by questionnaire. The relationships between 25(OH)D and AL or myopia were investigated using linear and logistic regression analysis. Average 25(OH)D concentration was 68.8 nmol/L (SD ± 27.5; range 4-211); average AL 22.35 mm (SD ± 0.7; range 19.2-25.3); and prevalence of myopia 2.3 % (n = 62). After adjustment for covariates, 25(OH)D concentration (per 25 nmol/L) was inversely associated with AL (β -0.043; P < 0.01), and after additional adjusting for time spent outdoors (β -0.038; P < 0.01). Associations were not different between European and non-European children (β -0.037 and β -0.039 respectively). Risk of myopia (per 25 nmol/L) was OR 0.65 (95 % CI 0.46-0.92). None of the 25(OH)D related SNPs showed an association with AL or myopia. Lower 25(OH)D concentration in serum was associated with longer AL and a higher risk of myopia in these young children. This effect appeared independent of outdoor exposure and may suggest a more direct role for 25(OH)D in myopia pathogenesis.
Low 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentration Is Not Associated With Refractive Error in Middle-Aged and Older Western Australian Adults

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentration and refractive error in a community-based cohort of adults aged 46 to 69 years. Methods: Residents of the City of Busselton in Western Australia born between 1946 and 1964 were invited to participate. Participants underwent cycloplegic autorefraction and completed questionnaires on education, occupational sun exposure, and physical activity. Blood samples were collected and serum frozen at -80°C. Serum 25[OH]D concentration was measured by immunoassay. Data on 25[OH]D were deseasonalized and multivariate models built to analyze the association between 25[OH]D concentration and spherical equivalent and myopia, defined as spherical equivalent <-0.50 D. Results: After exclusions, data were available for 4112 participants. Serum 25[OH]D concentration was not associated with spherical equivalent or myopia after adjustment for confounding factors (β = -0.01, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.03 to -0.008, P = 0.25, and odds ratio = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.99 to 1.05, P = 0.12, respectively). When participants were classified into 25[OH]D groups of lower (<50 nmol/L), medium (≥50 to <75 nmol/L), and upper (≥75 nmol/L), the upper group had slightly greater myopic refractive error than the medium group (P = 0.02) but not the lower group, after adjustment for confounders. Conclusions: There was no substantial association between 25[OH]D levels and spherical equivalent or odds of myopia in this study. The association previously noted between low serum 25[OH]D level and myopia in younger Western Australians is not evident in later adulthood. Translational relevance: This study provides further evidence suggesting that vitamin D levels are unrelated to myopia risk in adults and thus not a suitable target for myopia intervention.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the associated factors leading to myopia in primary school students in a relatively developed region in Hangzhou.Methods This was a cross-sectional study.By cluster sampling,primary students from 5 schools (grades 1-6) in Zhaohui District,Hangzhou,were recruited for this investigation.The right eye was examined and data were collected on spherical refraction,cylinder refraction,axial length and corneal curvature.Information was also obtained on family history,time spent on near reading after school and on weekends,and time spent on outdoor activities both after school and on weekends.A one-way ANOVA was used for analysis.Results There were significant differences in gender,family history,time spent on near reading and outdoor activity between myopic and non-myopic groups.Females were more likely to be myopic than males (63.7％ vs.67.4％).The students with myopic parents (F=10.559,P＜0.05) or those who spent more time on near reading on weekends (F=7.555,P＜0.05) and after school (F=2.492,P＜0.05) were more likely to be myopic.On the other hand,outdoor activities both after school (F=11.351,P＜0.05) and during weekends (F=6.387,P＜0.05) reduced the prevalence of myopia.Conclusion Myopia in primary school students is associated with gender,family history,near reading and outdoor activity.So both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of myopia.The effect of environmental factors,especially near reading,is time-dependent,and ultraviolet exposure during outdoor activity plays a significant role.

Data on the effects of vitamin D status on thyroid function in children are less examined. The goal of the present study was to explore the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and thyroid function parameters in early childhood. Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving record-linkage of children's data of routine health check-ups for promoting early childhood development at Guangdong Women and Children's Hospital; 2869 children aged 6– 24 months were included from January 2015 to May 2017. Serum 25(OH)D, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and free thyroxine (FT4) levels were measured using the electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Results: The study population had a mean serum 25(OH)D level of 79.7 ± 28.1 nmol/L and 12.5% vitamin D deficiency and 36.0% insufficiency rates. The rates of thyroid dysfunctions detected were 2.9% hypothyroidism, 4.2% subclinical hypothyroidism, 0.9% hyperthyroidism, and 1.7% subclinical hyperthyroidism among the previously healthy children aged 6 to 24 months. Serum 25(OH)D levels had no significant correlation with TSH (r = 0.022, P = 0.236), FT3 (r = 0.014, P = 0.440) and FT4 (r = − 0.059, P = 0.056) levels. No significant difference in the levels of thyroid hormones was found between the different quartiles of 25(OH)D level. Vitamin D deficiency [25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L] was associated with hypothyroidism (adjusted odds ratio = 2.16, 95% confidence interval: 1.18– 3.94) but not with subclinical hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and subclinical hyperthyroidism. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is slightly associated with hypothyroidism. No associations were found between serum 25(OH)D levels and thyroid-related measures (TSH, FT3, and FT4) in previously healthy children aged 6– 24 months. Abstract:PurposeTo investigate associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and dry eye syndrome (DES), and to evaluate the differential effect of vitamin D on ocular diseases including age-related macular disease (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), cataract, and DES.MethodsA total of 16,396 participants aged >19 years were randomly selected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. All participants participated in standardized interviews, blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D level evaluations, and comprehensive ophthalmic examinations. DES was defined by a history of clinical diagnosis of dry eyes by a physician. The association between vitamin D and DES was compared to the associations between vitamin D and AMD, DR, cataract, and DES from our previous studies.ResultsThe odds of DES non-significantly decreased as the quintiles of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels increased (quintile 5 versus 1, OR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.55-1.30, P for trend = 0.076) after adjusting for potential confounders including age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, smoking status, and sunlight exposure times. The relative odds of DES (OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.30-1.64) and cataract (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.59-0.99) were relatively high, while those of DR (OR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.18-0.76) and late AMD (OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.12-0.81) were lower in men.ConclusionsThe present study does not support an association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and DES. The preventive effect of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D may be more effective for DR and late AMD than it is for cataract and DES.

Abstract:Myopia is a worldwide public health problem of vision disorder caused by multiple factors, which has posed a huge socioeconomic burden, raising concerns about sight-threatening ocular complications. Vitamin D, as a kind of fat-soluble vitamin, related to time-spent-outdoors, has been considered by extensive studies to have potential relationship with myopia. We reviewed studies published in a decade which estimated the association of blood vitamin D status with myopia and summarized the universality and individuality of all research articles. Several research articles suggested the known environmental risk factors of myopia, including age, gender, ethnicity, education level, parental and school conditions, time-spent-outdoors, and sunlight exposure, and recent epidemiological studies demonstrate that increased vitamin D levels, by virtue of the extended outdoor time, may be an important modifiable factor and a protective effect that delay the progression of myopia in children and adolescents rather than in adults. The genetic studies have been conducted to get access to the evidence of gene polymorphism for explaining the association of serum vitamin D status and myopia, but the precise genetic interpretation of vitamin D and myopia remains unclear so far; on the other hand, the possible mechanisms are various like copolymerization mechanism, calcium homeostasis and imbalance of ciliary muscle function regulation, but nearly all of the investigators are inclined to remain skeptical. This article reviews the age-related epidemiological proofs, existent genetics correlations, possible underlying biological mechanisms and further values for the protective association between vitamin D and myopia, providing the possibility of prevention or postponement for myopia.

The Inverted U-Shaped Association between Serum Vitamin D and Serum Uric Acid Status in Children and Adolescents: A Large Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Analysis

Abstract:Background: Serum vitamin D is associated with hyperuricemia. However, previous studies have been controversial, with limited focus on children and adolescents. Objective: This study aimed to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between serum vitamin D and serum uric acid (SUA) levels in children and adolescents. Methods: The cross-sectional survey comprised 4777 participants aged 6 to 18 years, while the longitudinal survey involved 1641 participants aged 6 to 12 years, all derived from an ongoing cohort study in Shenzhen, China. Restricted cubic splines were used to visualize the dose–response relationship between vitamin D and SUA and the risk of higher SUA status. Two-segment generalized linear models (GLM) and logistic models were used to assess the association between vitamin D and SUA and higher SUA status, respectively. The longitudinal analysis used GLM. Results: We observed an inverted U-shaped relationship between vitamin D and SUA (p-overall < 0.0001, p-nonlinear = 0.0002), as well as the risk of higher SUA status (p-overall = 0.0054, p-nonlinear = 0.0015), with the vitamin D inflection point at 24.31 and 21.29 ng/mL, respectively. A 10 ng/mL increment in 25(OH)D3 levels, when below 20.92 ng/mL, was associated with a 68% rise in the risk of higher SUA status (OR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.07–2.66). Conversely, when 25(OH)D3 levels were above or equal to 20.92 ng/mL, a 10 ng/mL increment was associated with a 45% reduction risk of higher SUA status (OR: 0.55, 95%CI: 0.36–0.84). Longitudinal analysis indicated that the annual change of SUA was from −4.80 (β, 95%CI: −10.74, 1.13) to −9.00 (β, 95%CI: −15.03, −2.99) and then to −6.77 (β, 95%CI: −12.83, −0.71, p for trend = 0.0212) μmol/L when increasing the quartile of vitamin D3. Conclusions: An inverse U-shaped relationship was observed between vitamin D and SUA as well as the risk of higher SUA status. Sufficient vitamin D levels appear to play a preventative role against the age-related increase in SUA. Ensuring adequate vitamin D levels may be beneficial in improving uric acid metabolism.

Abstract:Background: Recently, the C3-epimer of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [C3-epi-25(OH)D] has become a topic of interest among 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] metabolites. Although it can lead to an overestimation of vitamin D storage, its relationship with disease occurrence remains controversial, possibly related to the great extent of tracking of 25(OH)D by C3-epi-25(OH)D over time. This study aimed to investigate the differential performance of C3-epi-25(OH)D3 and its percentage [%C3-epi-25(OH)D3] with respect to 20 common paediatric diseases. Methods: This study involved 805 healthy children and adolescents and 2962 patients with common paediatric diseases. We investigated sex, age, and seasonal differences in C3-epi-25(OH)D3 and %C3-epi-25(OH)D3 levels; their variations on 20 common paediatric diseases; and their degree of correlation with 25(OH)D3 levels and various diseases. Results: Among the healthy underage participants, C3-epi-25(OH)D3 and %C3-epi-25(OH)D3 changed similarly, with no sex differences. Moreover, their levels were higher in the infant period than in the other periods (t = 5.329-5.833, t = 4.640-5.711, all Padj < 0.001), and in spring and summer than in autumn and winter (t = 3.495-6.061, t = 3.495-5.658, all Padj < 0.01). Under healthy and disease conditions, C3-epi-25(OH)D3 was positively correlated with 25(OH)D3 (ρ = 0.318 ~ 0.678, all P < 0.017), whereas %C3-epi-25(OH)D3 was not, except in patients with nephrotic syndrome (ρ=-0.393, P = 0.001). Before and after adjusting for 25(OH)D3, the relationship of C3-epi-25(OH)D3 with the diseases was notably different. However, it was almost consistent for %C3-epi-25(OH)D3. Our results indicated that %C3-epi-25(OH)D3 was associated with short stature, nephrotic syndrome, lymphocytic leukaemia, rickets, paediatric malnutrition, and hypovitaminosis D (OR = 0.80 ~ 1.21, all P < 0.05). Conclusions: The %C3-epi-25(OH)D3 can correct the properties of C3-epi-25(OH)D3 to better track 25(OH)D3 and may be more suitable for exploring its pathological relevance. Further detailed studies of each disease should be conducted.

Abstract:Objective The research aimed to investigate the Association between Vitamin D deficiency and childhood obesity and its Impact on children's serum calcium, alkaline Phosphatase, and bone Age. Methods The study analyzed clinical data from 159 school-aged children who underwent medical examinations. The children were divided into a 25-(OH)D3 deficiency group and a non-25-(OH)D3 deficiency group based on their serum 25-hydroxy Vitamin D3 levels. The two groups were compared regarding BMI, TC, TG, FBG, HbA1c, Ca, ALP, and bone age differences. Results Individuals with a deficiency in 25-(OH)D3 exhibited higher levels of BMI, TC, TG, and ALP, and lower levels of Ca and bone age than those without the deficiency. These differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Further analysis revealed a negative association between 25-(OH)D3 levelsa positive correlation between Ca and bone age, and a positive correlation with, BMI, TC, TG, and ALP. Conclusion The deficiency of 25-(OH)D3 in school-aged children is linked to obesity and impacts bone growth. Monitoring vitamin D levels is crucial for clinical practitioners.

Relationship between Circulating 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Metabolic Syndrome in Chinese Adults: A Large Nationwide Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Objective: This study investigated the association of circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in adults. Methods: This nationwide cohort involved 23,810 Chinese adults attending annual health evaluations. Serum 25(OH)D levels, MetS status, and covariates were determined at each examination. Among them, 8146, 3310, and 1971 completed two, three, and more than three evaluations, respectively. A hybrid mixed-effects and Cox regression model was employed to determine the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships. Results: The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of MetS were significantly lower in individuals within quartile 4 (vs. 1) of serum 25(OH)D for both between-individual (0.43 [0.35, 0.52]) and within-individual comparisons (0.60 [0.50, 0.73]), respectively (all p-trends < 0.001). Among the MetS components, the corresponding ORs (95% CI) in between- and within-individual comparisons were 0.40 (0.29, 0.54) and 0.26 (0.19, 0.36) for abdominal obesity, 0.49 (0.41, 0.58) and 0.78 (0.66, 0.93) for high triglycerides, 0.70 (0.59, 0.82) and 0.75 (0.64, 0.87) for hypertriglyceridemia, 0.48 (0.39, 0.59) and 0.87 (0.71, 1.07) for low HDL cholesterol, and 0.92 (0.76, 1.12) and 0.49 (0.41, 0.59) for hypertension, respectively. Decreased hazard ratios (95% CIs) in quartile 4 (vs. 1) of 25(OH)D were found for MetS (0.80 [0.65, 1.00]), high triglycerides (0.76 [0.62, 0.92]), abdominal obesity (0.77 [0.63, 0.96]), and low HDL cholesterol (0.64 [0.50, 0.81]). Conclusions: Decreased concentrations of serum 25(OH)D correlate significantly to a heightened MetS risk and specific components. Our findings underscore the potential preventive function of circulating vitamin D concerning metabolic disorders.

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the associations between circulating micronutrients (vitamins A, C, D, E, and carotenoids) and the risk of myopia. Methods: A total of 1,620 adolescents from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations of micronutrients with myopia and high myopia. Restricted cubic spline analysis was employed to assess the potential nonlinear relationships. Results: Among the 1,620 adolescents, 549 were diagnosed with myopia. After adjusting for multiple covariates, only cis-β-carotene was significantly associated with the risk of myopia (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.03-1.39) and high myopia (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.03-2.03). No significant associations were found between vitamins A, D, E, C, α-carotene, trans-β-carotene, lutein zeaxanthin, and myopia. No nonlinear relationships were observed between any of the micronutrients and myopia. Conclusion: Cis-β-carotene is significantly associated with an increased risk of myopia and high myopia. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and potential impact of cis-β-carotene on ocular health.

Abstract:Background: Myopia is a major public health concern throughout the world and the prevalence has been increasing rapidly in recent years, especially in urban Asia. The "vitamin D hypothesis" has been raised recently because vitamin D may be a link between less time outdoors and increased risk of myopia. Methods: We reviewed all studies published in English which examined the association of time outdoors and blood vitamin D status with myopia. Results: The protective effect of time spent outdoors on the risk of myopia onset has been well-established with numerous observational studies and three trials published. Five studies reporting the association between the blood vitamin D status and the risk of myopia and two studies examining the variations in the vitamin D receptor as potential risk factors for myopia development were identified. Most of the current evidence was cross-sectional in nature and had not properly controlled important confounders in its analyses. The evidence supporting that vitamin D played a role in myopia development is weak and the mechanisms are unclear. Conclusions: At the current stage, it is still unclear whether blood vitamin D status regulates the onset or progression of myopia. Blood vitamin D status may only serve as a biomarker of outdoor exposure, which is the real protective factor for myopia.
