Abstract:We present a method to generate a primary dataset of optimised airfoil shapes for different angles of attack at different conditions, focusing on improving the lift-to-drag ratio by at least 10 percent. Through computational fluid dynamics simulations at a Reynolds number of 300,000 and subsequent optimisation using the adjoint solver, we have developed airfoil profiles with improved aerodynamic efficiency. The experimental validation of the aerodynamic coefficients obtained in this way was carried out by wind tunnel experiments on a specific optimised profile. The longitudinal height stability of all optimised shapes was investigated through Irodov's criteria. Polynomial equations were then developed to represent the camber lines of these optimised shapes. Through weighted average interpolation of the coefficients of the polynomials thus obtained, the prediction of intermediate stable airfoil profiles and their aerodynamic characteristics for any unknown flight scenario could be made. Additionally, we also discuss the concept of an 'average airfoil' that can suit an operational category, which is defined through a range of angles of attack and ground proximities. In the context of morphing wings, this approach can bring about rapid real-time responses to a lifting surface without extensive on-board computations. It can find potential applications in generating morphing wings of unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance, thus designed to operate near ground to evade radar detection.
