Abstract:Ontology design for complex applications is quite a challenge. The quality of an ontology is highly dependent upon the capabilities of designers, and the collaborative design process is hampered by the difficulty of balancing the viewpoints of different designers. In this paper, we present a granular view of ontology: ontologies are granular, ontologies are granular approximations of conceptualizations and conceptual-relation granules of an ontology are ordered tuples. We then propose a corresponding granular ontology design approach. In our granular ontology design approach, the unified granular cognition level and hierarchies of sub-concepts are initialized before ontological terms are designed in detail, which reduces the subjective effects of the capabilities of designers. Our approach also introduces the idea of optimization to choose an optimal subset, which can best approximate the real concept domain, from the knowledge rule set presented by different domain experts. The optimal subset is chosen on the basis of the principle of granular ontology knowledge structure. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

It simplifies ontologies building and applications by providing a mechanism for querying ontologies and an easy-to-use programming interface to ontologies and instances. OMSs are powerful tools to create ontologies and extend their applications and scope. This paper explains the basic design principles of an OMS and designs a general framework of OMSs. It devotes to promoting systematically research and development of OMSs.

Abstract:This paper describes a preliminary attempt at using semantic Web paradigm, especially the Web Ontology Language (OWL), for functional design knowledge representation during collaborative functional modeling in engineering design. Towards extending our previous work on behavior-driven function-environment-structure (B-FES) modeling with capabilities of knowledge sharing and distributed problem solving, an ontology-based scheme for B-FES modeling, called B-FES/o, is proposed for semantic Web applications. As an illustration, the functional model of an automatic assembly system for manufacturing electronic connectors has used OWL format as its knowledge representation scheme.

Abstract:Perhaps the most fundamental notion underlying the desiderata for a successful Semantic Web is Semantic Interoperability. In this context, ontologies have been more and more recognized as one of the enabling technologies. This paper defends the view that an approach which neglects the role of ontologies as reference conceptual models cannot meet the requirements for full semantic interoperability. The paper starts by offering an engineering view on ontology engineering, discussing the relation between ontologies as conceptual models and ontologies as codification artifacts. Furthermore, it discusses the importance of foundational theories and principles to the design of ontology (conceptual) modeling languages and models, emphasizing the fundamental role played by true ontological notions in this process. Finally, it elaborates on the need for proper tools to handle the complexity of ontology engineering in industrial scenarios and complex domains. These tools include ontological design patterns as well as well-founded computational environments to support ontology creation, verification and validation (via model simulation).

Abstract:In recent years ontologies enjoyed a growing popularity outside specialized AI communities. System engineering is no exception to this trend, with ontologies being proposed as a basis for several tasks in complex industrial implements, including system design, monitoring and diagnosis. In this paper, we consider four different contributions to system engineering wherein ontologies are instrumental to provide enhancements over traditional ad-hoc techniques. For each application, we briefly report the methodologies, the tools and the results obtained with the goal to provide an assessment of merits and limits of ontologies in such domains.

Abstract:The System-of-Systems (SoS) paradigm is widely recognized and has become quite studied since a decade, as it has potentially practical applicability in systems engineering. SoS-organized systems could make efficient use of resources from a variety of domains. In this paper, we are studying one of the typical forms of networked enterprises: the supply chain. We will apply the SoS paradigm to this kind of "so-called" system-of-networked enterprises and we will then explore and analyze the interoperation problem in heterogeneous networked enterprises systems. Focusing on information flows in supply chain, we are proposing an approach for developing a supply chain ontology for networked enterprises interoperability, based on an extension of the ONTO-PDM product ontology.

Abstract:Pervasive computing is by its nature open and extensible, and must integrate the information from a diverse range of sources. This leads to a problem of information exchange, so sub-systems must agree on shared representations. Ontologies potentially provide a well-founded mechanism for the representation and exchange of such structured information. A number of ontologies have been developed specifically for use in pervasive computing, none of which appears to cover adequately the space of concerns applicable to application designers. We compare and contrast the most popular ontologies, evaluating them against the system challenges generally recognized within the pervasive computing community. We identify a number of deficiencies that must be addressed in order to apply the ontological techniques successfully to next-generation pervasive systems.

Abstract:The paper proposes a data management platform with an open architecture for converting huge amount of various and cluttered data into Lean Data, which provides customer-expected service and can be then encapsulated as service packages to be used by different application developers. Ontology is used to provide a unified way for data flow description and semantic data storage to achieve a unified understanding among different layers and modules. Abstract:A distributed system's functionality must continuously evolve, especially when environmental context changes. Such required evolution imposes unbearable complexity on system development. An alternative is to make systems able to self-adapt by opportunistically composing at runtime to generate systems of systems (SoSs) that offer value-added functionality. The success of such an approach calls for abstracting the heterogeneity of systems and enabling the programmatic construction of SoSs with minimal developer intervention. We propose a general ontology-based approach to describe distributed systems, seeking to achieve abstraction and enable runtime reasoning between systems. We also propose an architecture for systems that utilizes such ontologies to enable systems to discover and 'understand' each other, and potentially compose, all at runtime. We detail features of the ontology and the architecture through three contrasting case studies: one on controlling multiple systems in smart home environment, another on the management of dynamic computing clusters, and a third on autonomic connection of rescue teams. We also quantitatively evaluate the scalability and validity of our approach through experiments and simulations. Our approach enables system developers to focus on high-level SoS composition without being constrained by deployment-specific implementation details. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach to raise the level of abstraction of SoS construction through reasoned composition at runtime. Our architecture presents a strong foundation for further work due to its generality and extensibility.

Abstract:International Journal of Information Technology &Decision Making, Ahead of Print. Ontologies are attracting increasing attention in software engineering research due to their ability to precisely model the semantic aspects of systems. Enriching software system models using ontology principles, especially in the process of developing interactive systems like Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), can lead to the automated production of high-quality codes. Additionally, ontology-aware specification of the service from the abstract to the concrete level leads to early precise extraction of the service required by the users. This paper introduces a model-driven ontology-aware service development process to reduce the burden of code generation. This integrated approach utilizes a stepwise refinement methodology facilitated by a novel refinement algorithm to automate SOA development. The effectiveness of the approach is evaluated using three proposed parameters which examine the characteristics of the refined model in each refining step through some practical SOA case studies. Finally, we calculate the recall, precision, F-measure, accuracy, and also time analysis of discovered querying services for various scenarios in AWS and Netflix before and after applying ontology. The results show an average of 17% improvement in these metrics after applying ontology.

Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:Ontology Engineering has captured much attention during the last decades leading to the proliferation of numerous works regarding methodologies, guidelines, tools, resources, etc. including topics which are still being investigated. Even though, there are still many open questions when addressing a new ontology development project, regarding how to manage the overall project and articulate transitions between activities or which tasks and tools are recommended for each step. In this work we propose the Linked Open Terms (LOT) methodology, an overall and lightweight methodology for building ontologies based on existing methodologies and oriented to semantic web developments and technologies. The LOT methodology focuses on the alignment with industrial development, in addition to academic and research projects, and software development, that is making ontology development part of the software industry. This methodology includes lessons learnt from more than 20 years in ontological engineering and its application on 18 projects is reported.

Abstract:Requirements elicitation is one of the hardest and most critical parts of software development. Ontology technology provides a good way to support this work. In the literature, there many methods proposed about how to make use of ontology in requirement elicitation. However most of such methods assume that there already exists some domain ontology for reuse. Different from this works, our approach breaks this assumption and claims that we should merge the ontology acquiring process and the requirement elicitation process together. In order to do that, this paper proposes an upper level ontology for process centered problem domain to help the analysts to represent the requirement, and defines an engineerable process to guide the ontology acquiring integrated requirement elicitation process. In the end, we make a case study in the taxation domain to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:The “Semantic Web” community poses a new nonfunctional requirement for web applications. In order to secure interoperability and allow autonomous agent interaction, software for the web will be required to provide machine processable ontologies. We understand that the responsibility, not only for making explicit this requirement, but also to implement the ontology, belongs to requirements engineers. As such, we see the ontology of a web application as a sub-product of the requirements engineering activity. In this tutorial we survey the basic principles behind ontologies as they are being implemented and used by the Semantic Web Community today. Those include ontology languages, tools and construction methods. We focus on a process for ontology construction centered on the concept of application languages. This concept is rooted on a representation scheme called the language extended lexicon (LEL). We demonstrate our approach with examples in which we implement machine processable ontologies in the DAML+OIL language. We finalize with a discussion of today's research issues in ontology engineering, including ontology evolution,, integration and validation.

Abstract:Ontologies are built on systems that conceptually evolve over time. In addition, techniques and languages for building ontologies evolve too. This has led to numerous studies in the field of ontology versioning and ontology evolution. This paper presents a new way to manage the lifecycle of an ontology incorporating both versioning tools and evolution process. This solution, called VersionGraph, is integrated in the source ontology since its creation in order to make it possible to evolve and to be versioned. Change management is strongly related to the model in which the ontology is represented. Therefore, we focus on the OWL language in order to take into account the impact of the changes on the logical consistency of the ontology like specified in OWL DL.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach to support the elicitation process. Based on the enterprise information systems, this approach is using the enterprise ontology and the domain ontology as the requirements meta models to steer domain users describing their real systems systematically. By reusing the domain software models, the requirements model of the target system can be constructed automatically. Compared with the available approaches for requirements elicitation, the approach presented in the paper shows the following significant features. First, it interacts with domain users using domain terminology, not software terminology, so allows the involvement of domain users. Secondly, it is possible to guarantee a complete, consistent and unambiguous requirements specification under the guidance of these meta models. Finally, it supports the automated construction of application requirements models with the help of its rich knowledge.

Abstract:In collaborative agile ontology development projects support for modular reuse of ontologies from large existing remote repositories, ontology project life cycle management, and transitive dependency management are important needs. The Apache Maven approach has proven its success in distributed collaborative Software Engineering by its widespread adoption. The contribution of this paper is a new design artifact called OntoMaven. OntoMaven adopts the Maven-based development methodology and adapts its concepts to knowledge engineering for Maven-based ontology development and management of ontology artifacts in distributed ontology repositories.

Abstract:In recently years,ontology has become one of the most important disciplines in the fields of Requirement Engineering.Many experts focus their mind on the subjects of ontology language and ontology building.However,now,there are two problems in this field,First of all,it is difficult for common users to use the ontology languages,most of which are based on complex syntax and logic.The second,usually,the ontology building tools,which lack of function to support reuse and program on the ontology base,can only support ontology representation and terms browsing.This paper reports on a new ontology language,named PNL-ODL(Pseudo Natural Language Ontology Description Language) and an ontology building tools based on PNL-ODL,designed and developed in our lab.PNL-ODL can easily be used by people lack of knowledge on computer science and on support of the ontology building tools user can build the ontology base conveniently.Furthermore,we also introduce the organization ontology,which is represented in PNL-ODL,to discuss the reusable ability of ontology.

Abstract:Knowledge about system life cycle processes constitutes one of the most valuable assets for systems engineering practitioners. While effective management of processes is imperative, it is an onerous task as knowledge is tacit and implicit. Although best practice to ensure the quality of such processes has been documented in the International Standard ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, it is limited to human-readable descriptions and not a computer interpretable knowledge representation. This leads to a problem with interoperability as process descriptions are interpreted in different ways. Consequently, we must define these processes in an explicit, unambiguous way. The goal of our research is to improve the current situation by advancing the semantic formalism of the standard from natural language description to computer readable knowledge presentation - an ontology. This paper proposes a methodology to realize this approach. The methodology ensures the concepts in the system life cycle processes are defined in an unambiguous, systematic and structured way. Through this methodology, an ontology of these concepts is generated, which provides a classification that enriches the perspectives by using different groupings for different viewpoints and purposes. The study contributes to the creation of a semantic network for systems life cycle processes to allow a more systematic and comprehensive understanding of the relations hidden in the processes. It also supports tailoring the system life cycle processes to different systems engineering projects to ensure the best practice.
