Abstract:Development of energy-efficient and low-cost desalination techniques is of pivotal importance, and reverse osmosis (RO) is regarded as one of the most promising solutions to tackle the world water crisis and has been widely deployed for large-scale and distributed water desalination. Graphene with nanopores was considered as a promising desalination membrane due to its unique properties. However, the intrinsic complexity of the desalination process, together with the various tunable properties of the membranes/nanopores themselves, makes accurate prediction of the performance or designing of new materials challenging. Machine learning (ML) techniques are superior in analyzing physical processes from multiple aspects, which could facilitate the rational design of high-performance desalination membranes. In this work, it was discovered that salt rejection mainly depends on the pore shape, pore area, and applied pressure and that water permeation mainly depends on the pore area and applied pressure from the ML study. The physical-chemical analysis based on the ion density and water density along the nanopore offers us a deep understanding of the effect of the pore shape on salt rejection and water permeation. In light of the results of ML and the analysis of physicochemical properties, we design the graphene pore with a particular pore shape, which could achieve high water permeation with high salt rejection. ML combined with high-throughput computation methods could help us design the material with excellent performance for desalination.
Atomistic Simulations of Biofouling and Molecular Transfer of a Cross-linked Aromatic Polyamide Membrane for Desalination

Abstract:Reverse osmosis through a polyamide (PA) membrane is an important technique for water desalination and purification. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the biofouling mechanism (i.e., protein adsorption) and nonequilibrium steady-state water transfer of a cross-linked PA membrane. Our results demonstrated that the PA membrane surface's roughness is a key factor of surface's biofouling, as the lysozyme protein adsorbed on the surface's cavity site displays extremely low surface diffusivity, blocking water passage, and decreasing water flux. The adsorbed protein undergoes secondary structural changes, particularly in the pressure-driven flowing conditions, leading to strong protein-surface interactions. Our simulations were able to present water permeation close to the experimental conditions with a pressure difference as low as 5 MPa, while all the electrolytes, which are tightly surrounded by hydration water, were effectively rejected at the membrane surfaces. The analysis of the self-intermediate scattering function demonstrates that the dynamics of water molecules coordinated with hydrogen bonds is faster inside the pores than during the translation across the pores. The pressure difference applied shows a negligible effect on the water structure and content inside the membrane but facilitates the transportation of hydrogen-bonded water molecules through the membrane's sub-nanopores with a reduced coordination number. The linear relationship between the water flux and the pressure difference demonstrates the applicability of continuum hydrodynamic principles and thus the stability of the membrane structure.
High-flux Reverse Osmosis Membranes Incorporated with NaY Zeolite Nanoparticles for Brackish Water Desalination

Abstract:Thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes incorporated with NaY zeolite nanoparticles were prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) of trimesoyl chloride and m-phenylenediamine on nanoporous polysulfone supports. The isolated zeolite-filled polyamide layer was observed by transmission electron microscopy, and the nanoparticles dispersed in the dense nodular polyamide on the polysulfone side. The effects of IP reaction time and zeolite loading on membrane separation performance were investigated. The results showed that a longer IP reaction time was necessary to form a denser zeolite–polyamide layer for higher salt rejection, and the optimum zeolite loading was determined to be 0.15wt%. Under the optimum conditions, the water flux increased from 0.95 to 1.78m3/m2/day (23.3 to 43.7gal/ft2/day (gfd)) with the incorporation of the zeolite nanoparticles, while providing a high salt rejection of 98.8% (2000ppm NaCl solution, 225psi (1.55MPa), 25°C). The TFN membranes were then post-treated with aqueous solutions containing glycerol, camphorsulfonic acid-triethylamine salt, and sodium lauryl sulfate to further improve the water flux. By optimizing the post-treatment solution composition, an improved brackish water desalination performance was achieved with 2.06m3/m2/day (50.6gfd) water flux, which was more than double compared to that of the TFC membrane without the zeolite nanoparticles, along with 98.4% salt rejection.

Abstract:The lamellar graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) membranes with controllable interlayer thickness could have promising separation performance for desalination. Understanding the molecular basis of the transport behavior of water and ions through well-defined g-C3N4 nanochannels is essential for the design of novel desalination membranes. Herein, we performed non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the transport mechanisms of water molecules and ions through g-C3N4 nanochannels with various thicknesses. The confinement effect of the nanochannel could impact the water density distribution between the g-C3N4 nanosheets. Meanwhile, owing to the strong adsorption effect of g-C3N4 nanosheets, the interfacial water layer and the middle water layer in nanochannels featured with distinct transport behaviors. This water conduction behavior is different from that of graphene nanochannels. For desalination, the MD simulations showed that the g-C3N4 nanochannel could entirely reject the ions when the channel thickness was smaller than 1.0 nm. Additionally, the migration behavior of hydrated ions was correlated with the water structures in g-C3N4 nanochannels. This work not only improved the understanding of the molecular transport mechanism of water molecules and ions in the g-C3N4 nanochannel, but also provided useful guidelines for designing next-generation desalination membranes.

Abstract:Nanoporous materials exhibit promising potential in water transportation applications, especially in ocean water desalination. It is highly desired to have great permeability, selectivity and controllability in the desalination performance of these nanopores. However, it is still a challenge to achieve all three features in one material or device. Here, we demonstrate efficient and controllable water desalination with a nanoporous 2D Fe phthalocyanine (FePc) membrane using molecular dynamics simulations. We find the FePc membrane not only conducts fast water flow, but it also suppresses ion permeation. The selectivity is attributed to a mechanism distinct from the traditional steric exclusion: cations are excluded due to electrostatic repulsion, whereas anions can be trapped in the nanopore and induce the reorganization of ions in the vicinity of the nanopore, which in turn creates a tendency for the trapped anions to move back into the saline reservoir. More interestingly, we find such mechanism is largely due to the sufficiently strong electrostatic interaction of the charged nanopore region with ions and is not restricted to the FePc nanopore. In addition, the number of protonated nitrogen atoms in FePc pores can be modulated by adjusting the pH value of the solution. The extent of the anion occupancy can thus be regulated, giving rise to control of the water flow. Taken together, great permeability, selectivity and controllability can be achieved with this nanosheet system. Moreover, our study suggests there is an alternative mechanism of water desalination which may be realized by intrinsically nanoporous materials such as FePc membranes.
Continuous water-water hydrogen bonding network across the rim of carbon nanotubes facilitating water transport for desalination

Abstract:The development of membranes featuring carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have provided possibilities of next-generation solar desalination technologies. For solar desalination, the microstructures and interactions between the filter membrane and seawater play a crucial role in desalination performance. Understanding the mechanisms of water evaporation and ion rejection in confined pores or channels is necessary to optimize the desalting process. Here, using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we found that continuous water-water hydrogen bonding network across the rims of CNTs is the key factor in facilitating water transport through CNTs. With the continuous hydrogen bonding network, the water flux is two times of that without the continuous hydrogen bonding network. In CNT arrays, each CNT transports water molecules and rejects salt ions independently. Based on these observations, using CNT arrays consisted with densely packed thin CNTs is the most advisable strategy for evaporation desalination, possessing high transport flux as well as maintaining high salt rejection.

Abstract:As a novel two-dimensional material, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has proved to be promising for separation membrane. However, the assessment of nanoporous g-C3N4 membrane for efficient desalination process has not been systematically investigated yet. In this work, we designed three g-C3N4 nanopores with different shapes based on the membrane unit structure. The non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the molecular mechanism of saline water permeation through the nanoporous g-C3N4 membranes. The relationship between water flow rate and external pressure was in good agreement with the classical hydrodynamics. Meanwhile, we observed that the local water diffusion coefficient increased as the enlargement of nanopore sizes, indicating that the nano-effect may also rule the water permeation. For desalination purposes, the designed g-C3N4 nanoporous membrane entirely rejected ions while maintaining a considerable water permeability of 14.9 L/cm2/day/MPa. By analyzing the trajectories of ions passing through the nanopores, we found that the configurational shape could divide one nanopore into several sub-regions, and specific ones may determine the desalination performance of the nanoporous membrane. This work unveils the molecular insights into the desalination process of nanoporous g-C3N4 membrane and further provides useful guidelines for the design of next generation desalination membranes with complex nanopore structures.

Abstract:To explore energy-efficient two-dimensional porous materials for water desalination is an urgent demand for rational utilization of water and sustainable development. In addition, how the pore hydrophilicity influencing the desalination performance remains elusive. Basing on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we herein proposed ultrathin membranes of 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with triazine units that are competent to reject ions efficiently while giving access to high water permeability. The ordered porous structure of these two COFs membranes (CTF-FUM and TPMA) enable nearly 100% salt rejection and show remarkable higher water permeation (∼57.2 and ∼ 48.1 L cm−2 day−1 MPa−1, respectively) over 3 magnitude compared to commercial TFC membranes (∼0.03 L cm−2 day−1 MPa−1). As a further step, the influence of layer number on membrane desalination performance was discussed to understand the underlying mechanisms. Compared to TPMA multilayer, it was found that CTF-FUM multilayer with hydrophobic pore shows less water permeability and higher transport resistance, and even has no obvious water transport through the 8-layer membrane. This MD simulation work gives a microscopic insight into 2D COF membranes on desalination and suggests that TPMA multilayer might be a promising membrane material for desalination applications.

Abstract:NaA type zeolites were surface modified with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and then added in polyamide layer of thin film composite (TFC) membranes to prepare surface-modified zeolite-polyamide thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes for desalination. The zeolites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The properties of membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle measurement, and the permeation experiment, respectively. The results showed that zeolites were successfully surface-modified with OTS without changing of its structure. The SEM images depicted that the membrane morphology was more homogeneous and the zeolites aggregation in membranes was ameliorated after the zeolites were surface modified. The results of contact angle measurement indicated that the hydrophilic property of membranes was not changed after the zeolites were modified with the long alkyl chain organosilane. The RO performance results verified that the flux of the modified-zeolite TFN membranes was all higher than that of the original-zeolite TFN membranes under the same conditions whereas the salt rejection was improved slightly. The flux of the TFN membranes with 0.05% (w/v) zeolite loading was increased from 28.5 to 40.9 l/m(2)h, while the salt rejection was increased from 97.8% to 98.5% after the zeolite modification. The experimental results revealed that the modification of zeolites made the molecular sieve zeolite nanocrystals well dispersed in the polyamide thin film layer, and hence improved the water permeation while maintaining high solute rejection.
Effects of modification groups and defects on the desalination performance of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) membranes

Abstract:Like single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have channels for selective separation of ions. Moreover, MWNTs have the advantages of simpler preparation and lower cost, potentially allowing wider applications in the desalination industry. In this study, the transport of water and ions inside two types of MWNTs, i.e., double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) and tri-wall carbon nanotubes (TWNTs) were investigated using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Modification groups, including carbon chains of different lengths and types with hydrophilic groups like carboxylate anion (COO–), and ammonium (NH3+), were used to improve the salt rejection performance. The simulation results suggest that 100% salt rejection could be achieved by adding different modification groups to various MWNTs ranging from 13 to 20 Å. More importantly, this study demonstrates that MWNT membranes with 100% desalination have water fluxes that are 10–30% greater than that of SWNT membranes with 100% desalination, implying the greater potential of MWNTs as building blocks towards next-generation desalination membranes. Additionally, even though all real-world carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have a certain amount of defects from the production process, most previous molecular model studies of water and ions transport in CNTs assumed that CNTs were perfect and defect-free. This study shows for the first time that CNTs with defects have improved salt rejection rates than perfect carbon nanotubes, although the former have lower water fluxes than the latter.

Abstract:The charge features of nanoslit were deemed to exert significant influences on optimization of its desalination performance. The MXene nanoslit carries richness of charge features, thus it should possess exceptional desalination performance. However, the optimal application conditions of MXene nanoslit as a water desalination membrane has not been systematically explored. In this work, we adopted molecular dynamics (MD) methods to assess the desalination performance of Ti3C2TX nanoslits. The influence factors, including the termination group, the slit width, temperature, pressure, and thickness were discussed with the expectation of probing the optimal application conditions for MXene nanoslit membranes. Simulation results showed that MXene nanoslit possesses excellent desalination performance thanks to the charge features of the nanoslit channel. The increase of slit width, temperature, and pressure all promote the water permeance but deteriorate the ion rejection performance. Fortunately, the tradeoff between water permanence and ion rejection rate can be mediated by the termination groups. The increase of MXene layer number could effectively improve the desalination performance, taking both water flux and ion rejection performance into account. The present work might provide some valuable suggestions for the design of water desalination membranes with exceptional desalination performance by manipulating the electrostatic properties of membranes.

Abstract:Desalination holds a great promise for dealing with the global water shortage. Water treatment by nanofiltration technology has been received extensive attention in recent years due to its low energy consumption, and researchers are seeking for new methods to improve its desalination performance. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the transport ionic solutions in negatively charged asymmetric graphene channels under the pressure differences. Interestingly, a maximum value occurs in the water permeation with increasing the channel base, where the water flux is significantly higher in the divergent direction because of smaller electrostatic adsorption and ions blockage. Furthermore, increasing the surface charge density of channel inner surface effectively improves the ion rejection due to larger electrostatic adsorption, but will also slightly reduce the permeation of water. In addition, the increase in pressure difference effectively improves the water permeation, while the ion rejection at higher charge density only slightly decreases. Our results show that the desalination performance of the membranes can be improved by tuning the geometric properties and surface charge as well as the driving force, which provides some fundamental understandings for the design of novel nanofiltration devices.

Water Desalination by Electrical Resonance Inside Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Although previous studies have indicated that the carbon nanotube (CNT) can be used for directed transportation of water and ions, it is still a challenging problem to design a CNT-based device for high performance water desalination. In this study, by using molecular dynamics simulations, we successfully design one type of CNT as a highly efficient desalination membrane through electrical resonance. By decorating the two ends of the CNT with vibrational charges, an alternating electric field is created inside the CNT. When the amplitude of the vibrational charge is 0.05 e, and the vibrational frequency is between 10 THz and 20 THz, the CNT can completely block the transportation of ions. The decrease of the amplitude or the deviation of the frequency in an appropriate range will gradually increase the ion flow. Besides, we also reveal the underlying molecular mechanism of ion blockage, i.e., the electric resonance can disrupt the water structure inside the CNT and then alter the hydration energy of ions inside the CNT. More importantly, we further demonstrate that this mechanism is universal, which is independent of the type of ions and the size of CNT. The present work could be useful for designing water desalination membranes with lower energy consumption and higher fresh water production.

Abstract:Finding the path to better desalination Polyamide membranes have been used in large-scale desalination for decades. However, because of the thinness of the membranes and their internal variability, it has been hard to determine which aspects of the membranes most affect their performance. Culp et al. combined electron tomography, nanoscale three-dimensional (3D) polyamide density mapping, and modeling of bulk water permeability with zero adjustable parameters to quantify the effect of 3D nanoscale variations in polymer mass on water transport within the polyamide membrane (see the Perspective by Geise). They found that variability in local density most affects the performance of the membranes. Better synthesis methods could thus improve performance without affecting selectivity. Abstract:The desalination of abundant seawater on earth to supplement the shortage of freshwater resources has been a consensus worldwide, and the innovation of desalination technology takes on more urgency. Currently, several carbon-based materials are considered to feature inherent metallicity. The exploitation of a sustainable antifouling desalination membrane utilizing such properties carries practical application advantages. Nevertheless, the engineering of the metallic carbon-based materials with reasonable structure and self-cleaning effect is still a struggle. A two-dimensional (2-D) carbon-based material with zeolite porous structure, PCS-C, consisting of dodecagonal, decagonal, hexagonal, and pentagonal carbon rings has been elaborately conceived by data driven. An interlinked delocalized π-network, cleverly formed by uniformly distributed electrons, gives PCS-C its special self-cleaning properties. The periodic and diverse zeolite-like of the desalination membrane with not only significantly minimizes the real stress concentrations present, but also provides plentiful salt ion-selective adsorption sites. The rejection rates of Na+ and Cl− could be respectively maintain 97.7 % and 100 % at 135 MPa. These conclusions fleshed out the design strategies for desalination materials and highlighted the promise of multiporous 2-D carbon-based materials for high-performance desalination applications.

Abstract:One of the most promising applications in nanoscience is the design of new materials to improve water permeability and selectivity of nanoporous membranes. Understanding the molecular architecture behind these fascinating structures and how it impacts the water flow is an intricate but necessary task. We studied here, the water flux through multi-layered nanoporous molybdenum disulfide (MLNMoS$_2$) membranes with different nanopore sizes and length. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the permeability do not increase with the inverse of the membrane thickness, violating the classical hydrodynamic behavior. The data also reveals that the water dynamics is slower than that observed in frictionless carbon nanotubes and multi-layer graphene membranes, which we explain in terms of an anchor mechanism observed in between layers. We show that the membrane permeability is critically dependent on the nanopore architecture, bringing important insights into the manufacture of new desalination membranes.

For a hydrophilic CNT-based membrane, the strong interactions between the membrane outer surface and the water molecules can destroy the water-water hydrogen bonding interactions at the interface, resulting in the reduction of the hydrogen bonding density, leading to an enhancement effect in evaporation rate. We also found that there is an optimal thickness for evaporation membrane. These findings could provide some theoretical guidance for designing and exploring advanced CNT-based systems with more beneficial performance in water desalination.

Abstract:As a sustainable, cost-effective and energy-efficient method, membranes are becoming a progressively vital technique to solve the problem of the scarcity of freshwater resources. With these critical advantages, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have great potential for membrane desalination given their high aspect ratio, large surface area, high mechanical strength and chemical robustness. In recent years, the CNT membrane field has progressed enormously with applications in water desalination. The latest theoretical and experimental developments on the desalination of CNT membranes, including vertically aligned CNT (VACNT) membranes, composited CNT membranes, and their applications are timely and comprehensively reviewed in this manuscript. The mechanisms and effects of CNT membranes used in water desalination where they offer the advantages are also examined. Finally, a summary and outlook are further put forward on the scientific opportunities and major technological challenges in this field.

Abstract:Zwitterionic nanofiltration membranes, with high rejection to organic molecules while low rejection to monovalent salts, are promising for antibiotic desalination. However, due to the heterogeneous issue of interfacial polymerization, the residual amine groups result in polymer chain aggregation via hydrogen bonds, blocking the mass transfer of water and monovalent salts. Herein, EtOH-assisted Michael-addition/Schiff-base reaction strategy was proposed to solve the issue. NaOH was initially utilized to provisionally interrupt the hydrogen bonds between polymer chains. Meanwhile, with the assistance of EtOH, gallic acid diffused into the membrane and reacted with the amine groups on the polymer chains to form covalent bonds, which thoroughly destroyed the stacking of polymer chains. As a consequence, water permeance and antibiotic desalination efficiency of the membrane are improved. For example, the pure water permeance reaches 8.9 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , 1.7-fold enhancement compared with the pristine membrane. The membrane is applied for antibiotic desalination, offering long-term running stability, antifouling ability, as well as high efficiency in concentrated antibiotics.

Abstract:Polyimide nanofiltration (NF) membranes with customizable chemical structures and excellent overall performance have attracted great interest in desalination and wastewater treatment. This work introduced novel Tin(II)-α-diimine coordination interactions to tailor the separation performance of polyimide NF membranes. Microstructural analysis confirmed the successful construction of coordination sites between Tin(II) and the diimine moieties. As expected, the resulting coordinated NF membranes exhibited uniform nanopores and reduced absolute negative charges on their surfaces, facilitating outstanding NF separation. The optimal coordinated polyimide NF membranes exhibited a high rejection rate of over 98% for methylene blue (MB) and a low rejection rate of less than 2% for NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 , demonstrating significant potential for application in dye desalination. Additionally, the obtained NF membranes demonstrate better long-term separation stability. As a preliminary study, this work provides a new strategy to modulate the microstructure and surface electric charge of NF membranes, potentially leading to greater application potential in dye desalination, seawater desalination, etc.
