Abstract:Gas-phase reactions of [OsBx]+ (x = 1-4) with methane at ambient temperature have been studied by using quadrupole-ion trap mass spectrometry combined with quantum chemical calculations. The [OsBx]+ (x = 1-4) cluster ions can undergo dehydrogenation reactions with methane. Comprehensive analysis of the [OsBx]+/CH4 (x = 1-4) system with Os-complexes ([OsCy]+ (y = 1-3) and [OsOz]+ (z = 1-3)) shows that the large polarity of the cluster and the high sum of the pair energies between Os and the ligand in the ETS-NOCV combine to promote the ability of the cluster to activate methane. Cluster polarity may induce heterolytic cleavage of the C-H bond, and the sum of the pair energies of the fragments may reduce the cluster orbital energy to match the methane orbital and improve the cluster stability. The synergistic interplay of these two factors may offer a viable approach for the activation of methane in the condensed phase, which involves modulating the coordination environment of the active sites to enhance the stability and facilitate C-H bond cleavage and the degree of matching with methane orbitals. A nonlinear function is used to extract second-order characteristic features that have a significant impact on the energy difference based on the limited energy difference data of the OsBmCnOlHk units. A neural network model is next designed to predict the reaction barrier for methane conversion by OsM4+ (M = C, N, O, Al, Si, or P) with high accuracy.

Abstract:: A microwave-assisted organic synthesis is an alternative approach towards the traditional way of heating to obtain desired bioactive scaffolds as a product. This method has transformed the approaches of organic synthesis, due to shorter reaction time with high product yields, modifications of selectivity, increased product purities, and simplification of workup procedures. The microwave-assisted reactions can be performed under solvent-free conditions. Thus, microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) has become the first choice for the medicinal chemist and chemical biologist to use as a tool to perform organic reactions in drug discovery and medicinal chemistry. Microwave-assisted organic synthesis specifically results in the desired products with higher selectivity and purity which may have better pharmacological properties. In this review article, we covered the literature from 2010-till to date, focusing on the use of microwave irradiation in performing organic reactions to deliver various bioactive scaffolds.

Abstract:Organic reactions driven by microwaves have been subjected for several years to some enigmatic phenomenon referred to as the microwave effect, an effect often mentioned in microwave chemistry but seldom understood. We identify this microwave effect as an electromagnetic wave effect that influences many chemical reactions. In this article, we demonstrate its existence using three different types of microwave generators with dissimilar oscillation characteristics. We show that this effect is operative in photocatalyzed TiO2 reactions; it negatively influences electro-conductive catalyzed reactions, and yet has but a negligible effect on organic syntheses. The relationship between this electromagnetic wave effect and chemical reactions is elucidated from such energetic considerations as the photon energy and the reactions' activation energies.

Abstract:The product of methylaluminoxane（MAO） is available commercially, however, central challenges over poor process control, low product yield, and high safety risks, still remain in its synthesis using large-scale reactors.This review presents several conventional hydrolytic routes for MAO synthesis with different techniques to supply water in the reaction system, and primarily focuses upon the development of continuous flow platforms to synthesize MAO, isobutylaluminoxane（IBAO）, and modified methylaluminoxane（MMAO） using 3D printed functional devices.In particular, those flow platforms introduce monodisperse microdroplets of water to improve the heat and mass transfer, achieving inherently safe productions of alkylaluminoxanes with high yield and superior co-catalytic activity. The presented flow strategy has a wide array of applications in chemical synthesis, especially when handling fast, highly exothermic, multiphase reactions.

Abstract:Microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) has emerged as a transformative technique in organic chemistry, significantly enhancing the speed, efficiency, and selectivity of chemical reactions. In our research, we have employed microwave irradiation to expedite the synthesis of quinazolinones, using water as an eco-friendly solvent and thereby adhering to the principles of green chemistry. Notably, the purification of the product was achieved without the need for column chromatography, thus streamlining the process. A key innovation in our approach is using aldehyde bisulfite adducts (Bertagnini's salts) as solid surrogates of aldehydes. Bertagnini's salts offer several advantages over free aldehydes, including enhanced stability, easier purification, and improved reactivity. Green metrics and Eco-Scale score calculations confirmed the sustainability of this approach, indicating a reduction in waste generation and enhanced sustainability outcomes. This methodology facilitates the synthesis of a diverse array of compounds, offering substantial contributions to the field, with potential for widespread applications in pharmaceutical research and beyond.

Abstract:Over the years, microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) became a commonly applied mainstream tool for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. The broad range of emerging applications in this field is mainly due to the significant contribution of MAOS to the development of ecofriendly processes. Various transformations have been developed for the synthesis of N-heterocycles under microwave conditions, including fast and selective processes. Tandem reactions involving greener reaction media, solvent-free conditions, and solid-phase synthesis are of exceptional interest in this area. In most transformations, microwave conditions dramatically enhanced reaction rates, as well as provided improved yields. This account highlights the most recent advancements in MAOS-based tandem processes for the synthesis of N-heterocycles.
Elucidation of the Nano-sized Molecular Structure of Methylaluminoxane using Synchrotron X-ray Total Scattering

Abstract:Methylaluminoxane (MAO) is commonly employed to activate molecular pre-catalysts in polyolefin synthesis, both indus-trially and in the laboratory. Despite the extensive use of this compound, the ambiguity related to its structure hampers the understanding of its structure–function relationship. The current study therefore employed synchrotron X-ray total scattering to elucidate the nano-sized molecular structure of MAO. The MAO samples, which were prepared using various synthetic protocols, exhibited consistent X-ray scattering patterns and atomic pair distribution function curves, indicating similar molecular structures. However, the scattering intensity in the small-angle region revealed differences in the high-er-order structures. A fitting study performed using 172 molecular models showed that small molecule and tube models were inadequate to reproduce the experimental results, whereas cage and sheet models provided comparably better fits. The sheet model was found to be consistent with the observed molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution, in addition to accounting for the intensity in the small-angle scattering region. These results align with recent crystallo-graphic findings reported in Science, where a stacked sheet model successfully reproduced an experimental X-ray dif-fraction pattern. Ultimately, determination of the structural motif of MAO is expected to be beneficial to systematic re-search and development using this compound.

Abstract:Conventionally, the organic reactions are accomplished by conductive heating with an external heat source like an oil bath. On the contrary, since its inception, the application of microwave irradiation is growing as a suitable alternate heating method in organic synthesis. Microwave heating considerably reduces the reaction time without promoting any side reactions. The fundamental synthetic organic chemistry majorly deals with transition-metal-catalyzed C–C and C–heteroatom bond formation reactions. It is one of the most important methods in contemporary chemistry resulting in a tremendous increment in the applications of these reactions during the last few years. This field has been acknowledged with a number of Nobel Prizes during the last decade (2001, 2005 and 2010). A considerable effort has been done on the continuous development of new ligands and catalysts as well as an increased understanding of the mechanisms for the improvement of the reaction condition. This review focuses on some of the latest developments in the area of cross-coupling reactions aided by microwave irradiation.
Elucidating ozonation mechanisms of organic micropollutants based on DFT calculations: Taking sulfamethoxazole as a case.

Abstract:Ozonation is widely used in wastewater treatment plants to remove diverse organic micropollutants. As molecular structures of organic micropollutants contain multiple ozone-preferred reaction sites, and moreover intermediate products can react with ozone again, ozonation mechanism is complex. A fast increasing number of organic micropollutants and a great demand of ecological risk assessments call for an in silico method to provide insights into the ozonation mechanism of organic micropollutants. Here, an in silico model was developed to unveil ozonation mechanisms of organic micropollutants. Sulfamethoxazole was taken as a case. The model enumerates elementary reactions following well-accepted ozonation patterns and secondary transformation reactions established for intermediates by experiments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed for evaluating thermodynamic feasibilities of reaction pathways. By calculating Gibbs free energies, ozonation products of SMX were predicted. The predicted products are consistent with those detected in experiments. This method is advanced in revealing all possible reaction pathways including minor pathways that produce toxic byproducts but are difficult to be observed by experiments. Accordingly, water treatment engineers can setup necessary treatment technology to ensure water safety.
Interpretable Machine Learning and Reactomics Assisted Isotopically Labeled FT-ICR-MS for Exploring the Reactivity and Transformation of Natural Organic Matter during Ultraviolet Photolysis.

Abstract:Isotopically labeled FT-ICR-MS combined with multiple post-analyses, including interpretable machine learning (IML) and a paired mass distance (PMD) network, was employed to unravel the reactivity and transformation of natural organic matter (NOM) during ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. FT-ICR-MS analysis was used to assign formulas, which were classified on the basis of their molecular compositions and structural categories. Isotope (deuterium, D) labeling was utilized to unequivocally determine the photochemical products and examine the development of OD radical-mediated NOM transformation. With regard to the reactive molecular formulas, CHOS formulas exhibited the highest reactivity (86.5% of precursors disappeared) followed by CHON (53.4%) and CHO (24.6%) formulas. With regard to structural categories, the degree of reactivity decreased in the following order: tannins > condensed aromatics > lignin/CRAMs. The IML algorithm demonstrated that the crucial features governing the reactivity of formulas were the molecular weight, DBE-O, NOSC, and the presence of heteroatoms (i.e., N and S), suggesting that the large and unsaturated compounds containing S and N are more prone to photodegradation. The reactomics approach using the PMD network further indicated that 11 specific molecular formulas in the CHOS and CHO class served as hubs, implying a higher photoreactivity and participation in a range of transformations. The isotope labeling analyses also found that, among the reactions observed, hydroxylation (i.e., +OD) is dominant for lignin/CRAMs and condensed aromatics, and formulas containing ≤10 D atoms were developed. Overall, this study, by adopting rigorous and interpretable techniques, could provide in-depth insights into the molecular-level dynamics of NOM under UV irradiation.

Abstract:Microwave irradiation as a kind of new energy supplied mode improves the synthetic efficiency in organic synthesis extraordinarily. It promotes investigation on the mechanism of the microwave-accelerated organic synthesis and the concepts of the specific microwave effect or the nonthermal microwave effect are proposed. The advances in the recent investigation on the nonthermal microwave effect in organic synthesis have been reviewed. More and more careful experimental results indicate that no so-called the nonthermal microwave effect exists in organic synthesis. The microwave-accelerated organic reactions are caused by the thermal effect, such as microscopic hot spots and the overheating effect in the microwave-assisted organic reactions.

Abstract:The unusual oxidative ability of mesoporous silicas towards oxidation of an important lignin model molecule, 1,2-(4-hydroxy-3methoxy-phenoxy) ethanol, apocynol under microwave irradiation is presented in this work. Mesoporous MCM-41, HMS, SBA-15 and amorphous silica were employed as catalysts in the present study. Different reactivities were obtained for the various silica materials. It was assumed that the substrate conversion and product selectivity were highly influenced by the nature of mesoporous silica materials. Based on the nature of the catalysts and reaction product profile, a plausible mechanism has been proposed.

Abstract:The different selectivities, including chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, syn/trans selectivity, diastereoselectivity, and enantioselectivity, of organic reactions under the microwave-assisted and conventional heating conditions are reviewed. The effect of microwave irradiation on these selectivities is discussed. According to a survey of literature, although some differences on the selectivities between the microwave-assisted and classical heating conditions are observed in some reactions, most of the reactions are not conducted under the strict same conditions except for heating mode, such as in different solvents, even under solvent-free conditions, under the catalysis of different catalysts or additives, at different temperatures. Some examples are conducted under the same reaction systems, but at different temperatures. For most of examples, the effects of the microwave irradiation on the selectivities are possibly caused by the actually different temperature and could be explained by the thermal effect. I am prone to consider that no specific athermal. effect exists generally in the microwave-assisted organic reactions. The microwave-assisted technology can tune selectivities via changing reaction temperature for some organic reactions. I hope this review will provide some useful information to understand the microwave effect on the organic reactions and the origin of the microwave-induced organic reaction enhancement chemical techniques.

Abstract:Mechanistic studies are of great importance for the understanding, optimization, and design of chemical reactions, especially catalysis. In recent years, the combination of mass spectrometry and computational chemistry has been proven to be powerful and effective for the exploration of reaction mechanisms. The former provides information of possible reaction intermediates, which are difficult to obtain using other experimental methods, while the latter gives detailed structural information of reaction intermediates and explores reaction energy profiles. This review covers applications of the combined method and highlights its strengths in mechanistic studies. Representative works are discussed to demonstrate the complementarity and synergy of mass spectrometry and computational chemistry. Some challenges in mechanistic studies with these tools and their possible solutions, as well as the trend for future developments are also discussed.

Abstract:Organic chemistry is a theme not so easy to understand by undergraduating students. The motivation of this work was carried out computational study of three different molecules by molecular modeling using classic and semi-empirical methods besides open-source softwares. The optimized structures were visualized through 3D representations which made the study more understanding. Physical chemistry properties were extracted from all molecules. For the molecule one there was good correlation between the calculation methods. For the molecule two and more complex structures like molecule three and four there was possible influence of steric effect showing that each method is applicable for each study system.

Experiment-driven atomistic materials modeling: A case study combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and machine learning potentials to infer the structure of oxygen-rich amorphous carbon

Abstract:An important yet challenging aspect of atomistic materials modeling is reconciling experimental and computational results. Conventional approaches involve generating numerous configurations through molecular dynamics or Monte Carlo structure optimization and selecting the one with the closest match to experiment. However, this inefficient process is not guaranteed to succeed. We introduce a general method to combine atomistic machine learning (ML) with experimental observables that produces atomistic structures compatible with experiment by design. We use this approach in combination with grand-canonical Monte Carlo within a modified Hamiltonian formalism, to generate configurations that agree with experimental data and are chemically sound (low in energy). We apply our approach to understand the atomistic structure of oxygenated amorphous carbon (a-CO$_{x}$), an intriguing carbon-based material, to answer the question of how much oxygen can be added to carbon before it fully decomposes into CO and CO$_2$. Utilizing an ML-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) model trained from $GW$ and density functional theory (DFT) data, in conjunction with an ML interatomic potential, we identify a-CO$_{x}$ structures compliant with experimental XPS predictions that are also energetically favorable with respect to DFT. Employing a network analysis, we accurately deconvolve the XPS spectrum into motif contributions, both revealing the inaccuracies inherent to experimental XPS interpretation and granting us atomistic insight into the structure of a-CO$_{x}$. This method generalizes to multiple experimental observables and allows for the elucidation of the atomistic structure of materials directly from experimental data, thereby enabling experiment-driven materials modeling with a degree of realism previously out of reach.

Abstract:Deoximation reaction is one of the most essential transformations in organic synthesis for the precise chemical manufacturing of carbonyl compounds. Developing catalytic deoximation techniques is highly demanding for environmental protection and minimizing expenses in fine chemical operations. Herein, we have reported an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and sustainable approach for regenerating carbonyl compounds from numerous oxime derivatives using microwave irradiation. The method uses I 2 and an aqueous solution of Acacia auriculiformis as the green solvent. The concentration of Acacia auriculiformis was discovered to correlate with the percentage production of carbonyl compounds. However, using the dual-surfactant system deliberately improved the regeneration of carbonyl compounds with up to 82% yield at 60:40 ratio. With DFT analysis and quantum chemical parameters, the chemical reactivity and electronic properties of the surfactant systems were determined. Also, the mechanistic interpretation of the actual reaction in the micellar core is depicted, which is well supported by the computational analysis. Overall, our method is green, low-cost, energy-saving, and avoids using toxic reagents and solvents.
