Abstract:Although anecdotally associated with local bears ( Ursus arctos and U. thibetanus ), the exact identity of ‘hominid’-like creatures important to folklore and mythology in the Tibetan Plateau–Himalaya region is still surrounded by mystery. Recently, two purported yeti samples from the Himalayas showed genetic affinity with an ancient polar bear, suggesting they may be from previously unrecognized, possibly hybrid, bear species, but this preliminary finding has been under question. We conducted a comprehensive genetic survey of field-collected and museum specimens to explore their identity and ultimately infer the evolutionary history of bears in the region. Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences determined clade affinities of the purported yeti samples in this study, strongly supporting the biological basis of the yeti legend to be local, extant bears. Complete mitochondrial genomes were assembled for Himalayan brown bear ( U. a. isabellinus ) and black bear ( U. t. laniger ) for the first time. Our results demonstrate that the Himalayan brown bear is one of the first-branching clades within the brown bear lineage, while Tibetan brown bears diverged much later. The estimated times of divergence of the Tibetan Plateau and Himalayan bear lineages overlap with Middle to Late Pleistocene glaciation events, suggesting that extant bears in the region are likely descendants of populations that survived in local refugia during the Pleistocene glaciations.

Abstract:Humans have developed a special relationship with some animal species throughout history, even though these animals were never domesticated. Based on raptors, bears, beavers, and elks, the question of whether there are similarities between the perception of these animals that triggered a special kind of fascination in humans and how the relationship between humans and these animals changed between Mesolithic age and medieval times is addressed. As we demonstrate, the categorical antagonism between 'animal' and 'human' is a concept that saw different kinds of influence, from the advent of sedentarism and husbandry to Christianity and from philosophical thinking in Classical Antiquity and the Period of Enlightenment. In prehistory and early history, we find different, opposing world views across time, cultures, and periods. Differences between animals and humans have been considered as fluid, and humans have had to engage with animals and their needs. The well-known and famous 'bear ceremonies' attested to different peoples and times were not unique, but were a part of belief systems that also included other animal species. Among the considered animals, certain raptor species attracted the attention of humans who tried to establish contact with them, as companions, whereas bears were almost 'disguised humans' due to all their similarities with humans, but they were also tabooed beings whose real names had to be avoided.

Abstract:Since the emergence of humanity, symbolic communication has been considered a creative language that has attracted the attention of many different disciplines. Due to the indifference of culture, the phenomenon of folk tales and legends claims that there is more space in literature. The purpose of this study is to create a knowledge base for spatial and cultural memory and to define the cultural heritage of Anatolia, which has hosted many civilizations, through historical periods. This study, which will contribute to a better understanding of the causes of cultural memory in terms of transferring stories for generations, aims to explain the relationship between space and cultural memory through Anatolian legends. For this reason, the study will explain folk tales with a semantic approach in terms of symbols and values. Within the scope of Anatolian legends, the codes and secrets of myths, fairy tales, and legends will be explained using qualitative research method and document analysis technique, and the relationship between space and cultural memory will be examined.

Abstract:Classical Antiquity is strongly present in youth culture globally. It accompanies children during their initiation into adulthood and thereby deepens their knowledge of the cultural code based on the Greek and Roman heritage. It enables intergenerational communication, with the reception of the Classics being able to serve as a marker of transformations underway in societies the world over. The team of contributors from Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand focuses on the reception of mythical creatures as the key to these transformations, including the changes in human mentality. The volume gathers the results of a stage of the programme ‘Our Mythical Childhood’, supported by an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Alumni Award for Innovative Networking Initiatives and an ERC Consolidator Grant. Thanks to the multidisciplinary character of its research (Classics, Modern Philologies, Animal Studies) and to the universal importance of the theme of childhood, the volume offers stimulating reading for scholars, students, and educators, as well as for a wider audience.
The mandible of Salbatore II: A new Ursus deningeri site in the northern Iberian Peninsula

Abstract:Ursus deningeri , together with Ursus spelaeus sensu lato , are chronospecies that belong to the Quaternary iconic cave bear lineage. They inhabited Iberia from the late Early to the late Middle Pleistocene. Here we describe a complete bear mandible recovered from Salbatore II cave (Basque Country). To assess its taxonomy, we compared it with other European Pleistocene cave and brown bears. Comparisons were made concerning its morphology and using both traditional and 3D geometric morphometrics analyses. The mandible has several morphological similarities with the cave bears such as a high corpus and deep masseter fossa. However, it exhibits a coronoid process that leans backwards, a pointed pterygoid process, and the p1 and p3 are present. These are characteristics customarily associated with U. deningeri and U. arctos . Metric analyses show that Salbatore II fits within the cave bears variation, with a minimum overlap with brown bears once size is accounted for. However, geometric morphometric analyses show that Salbatore II is similar to U. arctos , but within U. deningeri variation. Based on the overall size and the morphological characteristics, Salbatore II displays U. deningeri affinities with many ancestral characteristics, suggesting a minimum mid-Middle Pleistocene age rarely recorded in the Cantabrian region.

Abstract:The present study aimed to describe the skull and mandibles of the brown bear (U. arctos) from the Dancing Bear Belitsa Park using advanced 3D morpho-geometric techniques. The objective was to explore how sexual dimorphism and size influence cranial structures using advanced 3D geometric morphometric methods. Three-dimensional models of the skulls and mandibles of 12 brown bears were used. Differences in skull morphology between male and female brown bears were observed in this study. The male brown bear skull, larger than the female, exhibited a more pronounced extension of the upper part of the nuchal region towards the posterior. Additionally, the posterior part of the frontal region appeared notably thinner in male brown bears compared to females. Analysis of the mandible revealed that the masseteric fossa was more developed in males than females. These shape differences between males and females were found to be influenced by body size. Statistical analyses indicated a significant allometric effect of body size on skull PC1 values, suggesting that giant bears tend to have more elongated skulls. This implies a relationship in which larger individuals exhibit greater cranial elongation. In contrast, mandible PC1 values showed no size-related variation, indicating that mandibular shape is less influenced by overall body size. However, PC2 values in the mandible increased significantly with larger specimens, indicating a larger masseteric fossa in larger bears. This morphological adaptation potentially enhances feeding efficiency and bite strength in larger individuals, reflecting functional adaptations in brown-bear mandibular morphology. These findings contribute to our understanding of sexual dimorphism and size-related morphological adaptations in brown bears, providing insights into their adaptation biology and ecological roles within their habitats.

Abstract:The paper aspires to provide a critical presentation of the content of the Chasing Mythical Beasts: The Reception of Ancient Monsters in Children’s and Young Adults’ Culture collective volume, edited by Katarzyna Marciniak (2020), and an interpretative framing for the recurrent emergence of mythical beasts in literature and other media for children and young people. Famous mythical monsters – the Minotaur, Medusa, Pegasus, centaurs, and sirens – reappear either in their original form or in other versions in a wide range of stories, becoming a vehicle for critical reflections over a variety of subjects, like the encounter with the Other, the coming of age, the female power, totalitarianism, ethical dilemmas, or human relationships, to mention some of them. Monsters’ diffusion in almost all cultural fields highlights their universality, recognisability, popularity, and flexibility to adjust to requirements and priorities of all times and spaces. Their inexhaustible potential remains to be further explored.
Pleistocene-Holocene vicariance, not Anthropocene landscape change, explains the genetic structure of American black bear (Ursus americanus) populations in the American Southwest and northern Mexico

Abstract:The phylogeography of the American black bear (Ursus americanus) is characterized by isolation into glacial refugia, followed by population expansion and genetic admixture. Anthropogenic activities, including overharvest, habitat loss, and transportation infrastructure, have also influenced their landscape genetic structure. We describe the genetic structure of the American black bear in the American Southwest and northern Mexico and investigate how prehistoric and contemporary forces shaped genetic structure and influenced gene flow. Using a suite of microsatellites and a sample of 550 bears, we identified 14 subpopulations organized hierarchically following the distribution of ecoregions and mountain ranges containing black bear habitat. The pattern of subdivision we observed is more likely a product of postglacial habitat fragmentation during the Pleistocene and Holocene, rather than a consequence of contemporary anthropogenic barriers to movement during the Anthropocene. We used linear mixed-effects models to quantify the relationship between landscape resistance and genetic distance among individuals, which indicated that both isolation by resistance and geographic distance govern gene flow. Gene flow was highest among subpopulations occupying large tracts of contiguous habitat, was reduced among subpopulations in the Madrean Sky Island Archipelago, where montane habitat exists within a lowland matrix of arid lands, and was essentially nonexistent between two isolated subpopulations. We found significant asymmetric gene flow supporting the hypothesis that bears expanded northward from a Pleistocene refugium located in the American Southwest and northern Mexico and that major highways were not yet affecting gene flow. The potential vulnerability of the species to climate change, transportation infrastructure, and the US-Mexico border wall highlights conservation challenges and opportunities for binational collaboration.

Abstract:Large carnivores (order Carnivora) are among the world's most threatened mammals due to a confluence of ecological and social forces that have unfolded over centuries. Combining specimens from natural history collections with documents from archival records, we reconstructed the factors surrounding the extinction of the California grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos californicus ), a once-abundant brown bear subspecies last seen in 1924. Historical documents portrayed California grizzlies as massive hypercarnivores that endangered public safety. Yet, morphological measurements on skulls and teeth generate smaller body size estimates in alignment with extant North American grizzly populations (approx. 200 kg). Stable isotope analysis ( δ 13 C, δ 15 N) of pelts and bones ( n = 57) revealed that grizzlies derived less than 10% of their nutrition from terrestrial animal sources and were therefore largely herbivorous for millennia prior to the first European arrival in this region in 1542. Later colonial land uses, beginning in 1769 with the Mission era, led grizzlies to moderately increase animal protein consumption (up to 26% of diet), but grizzlies still consumed far less livestock than otherwise claimed by contemporary accounts. We show how human activities can provoke short-term behavioural shifts, such as heightened levels of carnivory, that in turn can lead to exaggerated predation narratives and incentivize persecution, triggering rapid loss of an otherwise widespread and ecologically flexible animal.

Abstract:This article presents the definition of myth as one of the important components of ethnic culture. Some ancient mythical systems are analyzed: Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Greek, Roman. It is found that in later historical epochs, with the systematization and recognition of the value of scientific knowledge, the merit of the myth of exemplifying reality becomes more and more plausible, remaining as a value at the level of aesthetic exercise. All world and national religions, as institutional exponents of some myths to the detriment of others, have had a confrontation with mythological phenomena. It is emphasized that through the existence of myths, the human being has managed to evolve. With the help of myths, man maintains his origin. Through the presence of myths the human being is organized in society. It is mentioned that myth is not only the first form of culture, but also man’s change of the spiritual life, which is preserved even when the myth loses its absolute importance. Myth is the oldest system of values. Thus, culture evolves from myth to knowledge, from imagination to law.
Atlantis, Carli and Bailly, and a short discussion about 'demonstration' in cultural astronomy

Abstract:Some European scholars in the second half of 18th century discussed the myth of Atlantis taking into account the studies of the evolution of the Earth and of the beginning and diffusion of civilization, in particular the beginning of astronomy. Atlantis was considered the cradle of the civilization, and while J.S. Bailly proposed that it was located in the Arctic and tried to convince Voltaire about his idea, G.R. Carli maintained the classical position in the Atlantic Ocean. Bailly's arguments and their criticism by Carli are of some interest, since they remind of the general problems that still plague cultural astronomy and archaeoastronomy. I will mention briefly the methodological problem of demonstration and evidence in these fields, and finally I will suggest a possible psychological limit when dealing with these topics.

Abstract:Ursus spelaeus , the Late Pleistocene a cave bear is known from numerous accumulations found in the fossil sector of caves situated in the Carpathian and Apuseni Mountains. In this study, we present new radiocarbon data along a profile of the Cioclovina Uscată Cave, which is situated in the South Carpathians. The data suggest that, during the entire Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) interval, the cave was serving as a shelter for U. spelaeus , with the oldest dated bone indicating an age of > 47,710 and the youngest one, an age of 31,820 ± 400 years cal BP. Histogram plots of 110 radiocarbon data from different caves of the Carpathian and Apuseni Mountains as Cioclovina Uscată, Peștera (Cave) cu Oase, Peștera Muierii, or Peștera Urșilor, respectively, show a maximum expansion of the cave bear population between 50,000 and 40,000, a decline between 40,000 and 35,000 and a partial recovery from 35,000–30,000 years cal BP. Radiocarbon data of Homo sapiens remains, younger than 35,000 years cal BP, support the fact that H. sapiens accessed the same caves where the cave bear persisted to hibernate. Besides general cool conditions and restricted food sources, the presence of H. sapiens constituted an additional stress factor driving the cave bear to extinction.

Heterochronous mitogenomes shed light on the Holocene history of the Scandinavian brown bear

Abstract:Following glacial retreat after the last ice age, brown bears (Ursus arctos) recolonised Scandinavia. Previous research based on mitochondrial markers suggests that bears recolonised from both the north and the south, with a contact zone in central Scandinavia. More recently, the Scandinavian brown bear was subjected to a strong population decline with only ca. 130 remaining individuals, due to intense human persecution approximately 100 years ago. Here, we analyse 41 ancient, historical, and modern mitochondrial genomes, to examine the number of female lineages involved in the postglacial recolonisation event and temporal changes in the Scandinavian brown bears' mitochondrial genetic diversity. Our results support the bi-directional recolonisation hypothesis, indicating multiple mitochondrial lineages from clade 1a possibly followed a southern route, while only a single lineage from clade 3a appears to have followed a northern route. Furthermore, we found that the recent bottleneck had a strong impact on the southern subpopulation, resulting in only one remaining haplotype in the contemporary brown bears. For the northern subpopulation, the impact was moderate, and most haplotypes were retained throughout the bottleneck. By exploring the postglacial recolonisation and recent population pressures, our study enhances understanding of how these factors have influenced the genetic diversity of Scandinavian brown bears.

Abstract:This paper examines a peculiar notion of divinity: the observation that authors of twentieth century astrology books recount myths of ancient Greek deities. These old stories seem to contradict the often cited ‘new’ psychological nature of Western astrology since the 1920s following the influence of C. G. Jung’s psychology. On a larger scale, this observation has the potential to blur the boundaries between so-called ‘traditional’ and ‘psychological’ astrology. And yet astrological authors had their reasons for including Greek mythology in their books. The task of this paper is to flesh out the role that ancient deities play in – putatively – new astrological concepts using examples of the German astrologer Olga von Ungern-Sternberg (1895-1997).

Abstract:Significant palaeoecological and paleoclimatic changes that took place during Late Pleistocene—Early Holocene transition are considered important factors that led to megafauna extinctions. Unlike many other species, the brown bear (Ursus arctos) has survived this geological time. Despite the fact that several mitochondrial DNA clades of brown bears became extinct at the end of the Pleistocene, this species is still widely distributed in Northeast Eurasia. Here, using the ancient DNA analysis of a brown bear individual that inhabited Northeast Asia in the Middle Holocene (3460 ± 40 years BP) and comparative phylogenetic analysis, we show a significant mitochondrial DNA similarity of the studied specimen with modern brown bears inhabiting Yakutia and Chukotka. In this study, we clearly demonstrate the maternal philopatry of the Northeastern Eurasian U. arctos population during the several thousand years of the Holocene.

On tauroctonies and stars: Mithras and the life of an image

Abstract:A hero or a god, wearing an oriental garb and a Phrygian cap, presses his body on that of a bull to subdue it. With his flexed knee he presses the back of the animal and holds its head with his left hand, while with his right hand he stabs a dagger into the neck of the beast. Referring to this representation of the sacrifice of the bull, or tauroctony, Fritz Saxl once wrote that he could not imagine another case in which the birth of an image could be observed with such precision. Although the complete iconography of the Mithras cult varies substantially from one sanctuary to another, the tauroctony, an element always present in all temples, is considered key to its ideology. This image was not neglected by Aby Warburg and was reproduced in abundance in Panel 8 on the Ascension towards the Sun in his Bilderatlas Mnemosyne. In this work we propose to make a journey through the life of this image that, very early on, was related to the constellations, to the great circles of the celestial sphere and to certain singular moments of the seasonal cycle. We will conclude with a critical analysis of recent speculations that bring into play subtle aspects of the movement of the sky, driven by a powerful god who resided beyond the stars, and relate them to the symbolic death of the bull.

Human footprint and forest disturbance reduce space use of brown bears across Europe.

Abstract:Three-quarters of the planets land surface has been altered by humans, with consequences for animal ecology, movements and related ecosystem functioning. Species often occupy wide geographical ranges with contrasting human disturbance and environmental conditions, yet, limited data availability across species ranges has constrained our understanding of how human impact and resource availability jointly shape intraspecific variation of animal space use. Leveraging a unique dataset of 752 annual GPS movement trajectories from 370 brown bears (Ursus arctos) across the species range in Europe, we investigated the effects of human impact (i.e., human footprint index), resource availability, forest cover and disturbance, and area-based conservation measures on brown bear space use. We quantified space use at different spatio-temporal scales during the growing season (May - September): home range size; representing general space requirements, 10-day long-distance displacement distances, and routine 1-day displacement distances. We found large intraspecific variation in brown bear space use across all scales, which was profoundly affected by human footprint index, vegetation productivity, and recent forest disturbances creating opportunity for resource pulses. Bears occupied smaller home ranges and moved less in more anthropized landscapes and in areas of higher resource availability. Forest disturbances reduced space use while contiguous forest cover promoted longer daily movements. The amount of strictly protected and roadless areas within bear home ranges were too small to affect space use. Anthropized landscapes may hinder the expansion of small and isolated populations, such as the Apennine and Pyrenean, and obstruct population connectivity, for example between the Alpine or Carpathian with the Dinaric Pindos populations. Our findings call for actions to maintain bear movements across landscapes with high human footprint, for example by maintaining forest integrity, to support viable bear populations and their ecosystem functions.

Abstract:Consistently throughout the tradition of Western philosophy, as well as materially speaking, animals have long been the most estranged and disempowered creatures on earth. Indeed, the Aristotelian and Cartesian theses proposed animals as being little more than automata. This derisive philosophical treatment has embedded itself in the vast majority of cultural practices and has erased the ancient agency of non-human creatures vis-à-vis human society. Derrida, in a counter assault to this humanist position, points out that the domination of animals is (even) encoded in the structure of language. This article seeks to extend on this notion of the symbolic alienation of animals as a cultural phenomenon that is not purely linguistic, but (manifestly) also embedded in visual signs. Particularly in art and its historical discourse, animals are indexical signifiers, attaching affect or moral allegory to the humans they accompany, merely functioning as allegorical stand-ins for virtue or vice along the ethical spectrum of a particular cultural and historical era. This article examines the use of rhetorical similitude as a phenomenon and device or conceit in animal representation, with applied image discussion of artworks from the Urban Animal exhibition (2009); as well as a limited selection of domestic animal representations. Artworks featuring amalgamated animal/human forms are also briefly addressed. The animalised human form is a trope spanning many historical periods, and persisting in present-day art and culture as a fecund site for the imagining of the human model through the animal index.

Abstract:Large carnivores have faced severe extinction pressures throughout Europe during the last centuries, where human-induced disturbances reached unprecedented levels. In the late twentieth century, the Cantabrian brown bear population was on the verge of extinction, due to poaching. Yet, the end of the last century was a turning point for this population. Presence data on the western Cantabrian subpopulation was collected since the beginning of the century and insights provided by this long-term monitoring may be useful for brown bear conservation.

Between Reality and Symbol: Fierce Dogs and Ferocious Wolves in the Decameron

Abstract:Non-human animals have a long history of being utilized to understand human nature, and both wild and domestic canines have been particularly intertwined with humanity since ancient times. This article examines the representation of animals, and specifically of dogs and wolves, in Boccaccio’s Decameron. The analysis posits Boccaccio’s canine portrayals as multifaceted in nature, serving as tools for the interpretation of human behavior and also reflective of shifting views on the purpose of animal portrayals in literature. The article explores these ideas, in part, through interpretation of Boccaccio’s canines in comparison to those in other sources, with an emphasis on Dante’s Divine Comedy. Given the fact that the Commedia hosts a proliferation of allegorical beasts whereas the Decameron focuses on portrayals of commonplace, living animals, one might expect significant differences in the texts’ treatment of dogs and wolves. Yet, although differences exist, a study of both texts reveals a common outlook on the canine family; and the Decameron’s treatment of dogs and wolves not only reflects that of the Commedia, but also the confluence of wolves and dogs with one another. The article’s primary subjects of discussion from the Decameron are the widely-read story of Nastagio degli Onesti’s otherworldly vision in V.8, and the lesser-known novella IX.7, featuring Talano d’Imole, his wife Margherita, and a brutal wolf attack. In addition to examining literary sources, the article touches upon hierarchical views of wild and domestic canines in daily life from the period for its analysis.
