Abstract:Spinal surgery is a common procedure, and the number is increasing in recent years, particularly in patients who are older than 64 years of age. [ 1 ] According to the database analysis from the National Inpatient Sample, elective lumbar fusion surgeries increased 62.3% from 2004 to 2015, [ 1 ] with a total of 1.62 million instrumented spinal procedures performed annually in the United States. The global rate of postoperative complications or adverse events after spinal surgery are currently reported as occurring in 7% to 16% of patients, [ 2–4 ] and the most reported complications are postoperative radiculopathy, wound infections, and urinary tract infections.
