Abstract:In compressed sensing theory, the measurement matrix improves the reconstruction performance by reducing the cross-correlation between itself and the sparse dictionary. Aiming at the difficulty of hardware implementation of random measurement matrix and the large storage cost, this paper proposes an optimized method for constructing measurement matrix based on pseudo-random sequence. This method combines the random Gaussian matrix with the pseudo-random sequence and the Hadamard matrix, adjusts the size of the measurement matrix by changing the order of the random Gaussian matrix, so that the constructed matrix not only retains the advantages of the random Gaussian matrix with few measurements and the pseudo-random sequence with high correlation, but also has good reconstruction performance. At the same time, related theorem is proposed and its rationality is verified. Finally, the one-dimensional random signal and two-dimensional images are experimentally verified on the MATLAB simulation platform. The experimental results show that, compared with the conventional matrices, the optimized matrix has better reconstruction performance, lower time computation complexity and good application value.
A Fast Sah-Based Construction of Octree

Abstract:Recent GPU ray tracers can already achieve performance competitive to that of their CPU Counterparts. Nevertheless, these systems call not yet fully exploit file capabilities of modern GPUs and can only handle medium-sized, static scenes.We present all octree construction algorithm for the GPU that achieves real-time performance by heavily exploiting the hardware, which has been observed to give Superior performance in ray tracing compared to other acceleration structures. We use streaming construction with the Surface area heuristic (SAH) that significantly increase the coherence of memory accesses during construction of file octree.
Merged Quadtree Fractal Image Compression

Abstract:The quadtree method is usually used in fractal block coding, but its efficiency is very low. We propose a new scheme, merged quadtree partitioning (MQP), for efficient image compression. It is an improved quadtree method, and can merge the quadtree nodes on the same level and on the different levels to share one transformation. As the merged nodes describe irregular regions with boundaries approximating the image edges, which need only one transformation, the total number of transformations required by MQP is much less than by the quadtree method. Thus, we obtain a greater compression ratio. In addition, we speed up MQP method by using the relationship between the search of the merged range and that of its parent range, and obtain a shorter encoding time than with other partitioning schemes.
Triangulating the Square and Squaring the Triangle: Quadtrees and Delaunay Triangulations are Equivalent

Abstract:We show that Delaunay triangulations and compressed quadtrees are equivalent structures. More precisely, we give two algorithms: the first computes a compressed quadtree for a planar point set, given the Delaunay triangulation; the second finds the Delaunay triangulation, given a compressed quadtree. Both algorithms run in deterministic linear time on a pointer machine. Our work builds on and extends previous results by Krznaric and Levcopolous and Buchin and Mulzer. Our main tool for the second algorithm is the well-separated pair decomposition(WSPD), a structure that has been used previously to find Euclidean minimum spanning trees in higher dimensions (Eppstein). We show that knowing the WSPD (and a quadtree) suffices to compute a planar Euclidean minimum spanning tree (EMST) in linear time. With the EMST at hand, we can find the Delaunay triangulation in linear time. As a corollary, we obtain deterministic versions of many previous algorithms related to Delaunay triangulations, such as splitting planar Delaunay triangulations, preprocessing imprecise points for faster Delaunay computation, and transdichotomous Delaunay triangulations.

A Fast and Efficient Fractal Image Compression Algorithm

Abstract:Since the encoding time for fractal encoding method is high and of importance, how to speed up the encoding is a key issue. In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient fractal coding algorithm, which is based on merged quadtree partitioning scheme. In this algorithm, the searching procedure in the finer level sufficiently uses the computing result of the coarser one. For the searches in finer levels, most of computation has been completed by searches in the coarser level, so the total search time reduces greatly. Besides, we use simple merged quadtree to reduce the number of transformation needed by encoding the whole image, so at the same PSNR, we also gain an increase of the compression ratio.

Abstract:By combining several interesting applications of random sampling in geometric algorithms like point location, linear programming, segment intersections, binary space partitioning, Clarkson and Shor \cite{CS89} developed a general framework of randomized incremental construction (RIC ). The basic idea is to add objects in a random order and show that this approach yields efficient/optimal bounds on {\bf expected} running time. Even quicksort can be viewed as a special case of this paradigm. However, unlike quicksort, for most of these problems, attempts to obtain sharper tail estimates on the running time had proved inconclusive. Barring some results by \cite{MSW93,CMS92,Seidel91a}, the general question remains unresolved. In this paper we present some general techniques to obtain tail estimates for RIC and and provide applications to some fundamental problems like Delaunay triangulations and construction of Visibility maps of intersecting line segments. The main result of the paper centers around a new and careful application of Freedman's \cite{Fre75} inequality for Martingale concentration that overcomes the bottleneck of the better known Azuma-Hoeffding inequality. Further, we show instances where an RIC based algorithm may not have inverse polynomial tail estimates. In particular, we show that the RIC time bounds for trapezoidal map can encounter a running time of $\Omega (n\log n\log\log n )$ with probability exceeding $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}$. This rules out inverse polynomial concentration bounds around the expected running time.

Abstract:Subdivision surfaces, especially with displacement, are one of the key modeling primitives used in high-quality rendering environments, such as, e.g., movie production. While their use easily maps to rasterization-based frameworks, they pose a significant challenge for ray tracing environments. This is due to the fact that incoherent access patterns require storing or caching fully tessellated and displaced meshes for efficient intersection computations. In this paper we use a two-tier hierarchy built on a scene's patches. It relies on compressed and quantized bounding volumes on the second tier to reduce the size of the BVH itself. Based on this acceleration structure, we propose a quantized, compact approximation for leaf nodes while being faithful to the underlying patch-geometry. We build on recent advances and present a system that shows competitive performance regarding run-time speed, which is close to full-resolution pre-tessellation methods as well as to previous compression approaches. Ultimately, we provide strong compression of up to a factor of 5: 1 compared to state-of-the-art methods while maintaining high geometrical fidelity surpassing similarly compact approximations and getting close to uncompressed geometry.
Geometry Based Connectivity Compression Of Triangle Mesh

Abstract:Efficient encoding of triangle mesh has recently become a subject of intensive study and many methods have been proposed. Most of the triangle mesh compression algorithms up to now do not benefit from geometry information when compressing connectivity. In this paper we present a novel method to encode the connectivity information by exploiting geometry information. In our scheme, a triangle mesh is incrementally reconstructed from local geometry information of input mesh. The reconstructed connectivity is similar to that of the original mesh. The difference between them is recorded into a stream of numbers to guide decompression. The vertex coordinates can be compressed using the method of Touma and Gotsman[1] at the same time. The experimental results of our algorithm show that its compression rates are often below, the connectivity entropy estimation [2, 19] widely accepted.
A Tail Estimate with Exponential Decay for the Randomized Incremental Construction of Search Structures

Abstract:The Randomized Incremental Construction (RIC) of search DAGs for point location in planar subdivisions, nearest-neighbor search in 2D points, and extreme point search in 3D convex hulls, are well known to take ${\cal O}(n \log n)$ expected time for structures of ${\cal O}(n)$ expected size. Moreover, searching takes w.h.p. ${\cal O}(\log n)$ comparisons in the first and w.h.p. ${\cal O}(\log^2 n)$ comparisons in the latter two DAGs. However, the expected depth of the DAGs and high probability bounds for their size are unknown. Using a novel analysis technique, we show that the three DAGs have w.h.p. i) a size of ${\cal O}(n)$, ii) a depth of ${\cal O}(\log n)$, and iii) a construction time of ${\cal O}(n \log n)$. One application of these new and improved results are \emph{remarkably simple} Las Vegas verifiers to obtain search DAGs with optimal worst-case bounds. This positively answers the conjectured logarithmic search cost in the DAG of Delaunay triangulations [Guibas et al.; ICALP 1990] and a conjecture on the depth of the DAG of Trapezoidal subdivisions [Hemmer et al.; ESA 2012]. It also shows that history-based RIC circumvents a lower bound on runtime tail estimates of conflict-graph RICs [Sen; STACS 2019].

A New Insertion Sequence for Incremental Delaunay Triangulation

Abstract:Incremental algorithm is one of the most popular procedures for constructing Delaunay triangulations (DTs). However, the point insertion sequence has a great impact on the amount of work needed for the construction of DTs. It affects the time for both point location and structure update, and hence the overall computational time of the triangulation algorithm. In this paper, a simple deterministic insertion sequence is proposed based on the breadth-first-search on a Kd-tree with some minor modifications for better performance. Using parent nodes as search-hints, the proposed insertion sequence proves to be faster and more stable than the Hilbert curve order and biased randomized insertion order (BRIO), especially for non-uniform point distributions over a wide range of benchmark examples.

Abstract:In this paper we show that many sequential randomized incremental algorithms are in fact parallel. We consider algorithms for several problems including Delaunay triangulation, linear programming, closest pair, smallest enclosing disk, least-element lists, and strongly connected components. We analyze the dependences between iterations in an algorithm, and show that the dependence structure is shallow with high probability, or that by violating some dependences the structure is shallow and the work is not increased significantly. We identify three types of algorithms based on their dependences and present a framework for analyzing each type. Using the framework gives work-efficient polylogarithmic-depth parallel algorithms for most of the problems that we study. This paper shows the first incremental Delaunay triangulation algorithm with optimal work and polylogarithmic depth, which is an open problem for over 30 years. This result is important since most implementations of parallel Delaunay triangulation use the incremental approach. Our results also improve bounds on strongly connected components and least-elements lists, and significantly simplify parallel algorithms for several problems.

Abstract:An improved quadtree structure based on storing ascendant attribute is proposed,which is called ascendant quadtree.A recursion algorithm of constructing ascendant quadtree that implement a bottom-up process is also presented.A lot of experiments were carried out to demonstrate the memory-efficiency and algorithm advantages of the proposed method.The results for different scales and different complexities show that the proposed quadtree structure can obviously reduce the total of nodes and has a 69% compression improvement compared with the constant bit-length linear quadtrees,and has a better practical value and application prospect.
Enabling Efficient Random Access to Hierarchically-Compressed Data

Abstract:Recent studies have shown the promise of direct data processing on hierarchically-compressed text documents. By removing the need for decompressing data, the direct data processing technique brings large savings in both time and space. However, its benefits have been limited to data traversal operations; for random accesses, direct data processing is several times slower than the state-of-the-art baselines. This paper presents a set of techniques that successfully eliminate the limitation, and for the first time, establishes the feasibility of effectively handling both data traversal operations and random data accesses on hierarchically-compressed data. The work yields a new library, which achieves 3.1 × speedup over the state-of-the-art on random data accesses to compressed data, while preserving the capability of supporting traversal operations efficiently and providing large (3.9 ×) space savings.

Abstract:We revisit tree compression with top trees (Bille et al, ICALP'13) and present several improvements to the compressor and its analysis. By significantly reducing the amount of information stored and guiding the compression step using a RePair-inspired heuristic, we obtain a fast compressor achieving good compression ratios, addressing an open problem posed by Bille et al. We show how, with relatively small overhead, the compressed file can be converted into an in-memory representation that supports basic navigation operations in worst-case logarithmic time without decompression. We also show a much improved worst-case bound on the size of the output of top-tree compression (answering an open question posed in a talk on this algorithm by Weimann in 2012).

Abstract:The abundance and importance of complex 3-D data bases in major industry segments, the affordability of interactive 3-D rendering for office and consumer use, and the exploitation of the Internet to distribute and share 3-D data have intensified the need for an effective 3-D geometric compression technique that would significantly reduce the time required to transmit 3-D models over digital communication channels, and the amount of memory or disk space required to store the models. Because the prevalent representation of 3-D models for graphics purposes is polyhedral and because polyhedral models are in general triangulated for rendering, this article introduces a new compressed representation for complex triangulated models and simple, yet efficient, compression and decompression algorithms. In this scheme, vertex positions are quantized within the desired accuracy, a vertex spanning tree is used to predict the position of each vertex from 2,3, or 4 of its ancestors in the tree, and the correction vectors are entropy encoded. Properties, such as normals, colors, and texture coordinates, are compressed in a similar manner. The connectivity is encoded with no loss of information to an average of less than two bits per triangle. The vertex spanning tree and a small set of jump edges are used to split the model into a simple polygon. A triangle spanning tree and a sequence of marching bits are used to encode the triangulation of the polygon. Our approach improves on Michael Deering's pioneering results by exploiting the geometric coherence of several ancestors in the vertex spanning tree, preserving the connectivity with no loss of information, avoiding vertex repetitions, and using about three fewer bits for the connectivity. However, since decompression requires random access to all vertices, this method must be modified for hardware rendering with limited onboard memory. Finally, we demonstrate implementation results for a variety of VRML models with up to two orders of magnitude compression.

Fast coding tree unit decision for HEVC intra coding

Abstract:The Quad-tree structure in HEVC contributes to significant coding efficiency improvement, especially for high resolution videos. However, its recursive representation increases the coding complexity as well. This paper brings forward a fast coding tree unit algorithm to speed up the original intra coding in HEVC. By analyzing the texture of the CU, to filter out some unnecessary CU candidates. In the paper, two variables are used to evaluate the texture of the CU, that is the sobel gradient and MAD value. Combined these two values, encoding of some CUs can be skipped. Experimental results show that the algorithm obtains around 30% of time reduction with nearly unchanged PSNR and bitrate stays almost the same compared with the original HEVC intra coding.

Abstract:Two constructions were recently proposed for constructing low-discrepancy point sets on triangles. One is based on a finite lattice, the other is a triangular van der Corput sequence. We give a continuation and improvement of these methods. We first provide an extensible lattice construction for points in the triangle that can be randomized using a simple shift. We then examine the one-dimensional projections of the deterministic triangular van der Corput sequence and quantify their sub-optimality compared to the lattice construction. Rather than using scrambling to address this issue, we show how to use the triangular van der Corput sequence to construct a stratified sampling scheme. We show how stratified sampling can be used as a more efficient implementation of nested scrambling, and that nested scrambling is a way to implement an extensible stratified sampling estimator. We also provide a test suite of functions and a numerical study for comparing the different constructions.

Efficiently Enumerating Minimal Triangulations

Abstract:We present an algorithm that enumerates all the minimal triangulations of a graph in incremental polynomial time. Consequently, we get an algorithm for enumerating all the proper tree decompositions, in incremental polynomial time, where "proper" means that the tree decomposition cannot be improved by removing or splitting a bag. The algorithm can incorporate any method for (ordinary, single result) triangulation or tree decomposition, and can serve as an anytime algorithm to improve such a method. We describe an extensive experimental study of an implementation on real data from different fields. Our experiments show that the algorithm improves upon central quality measures over the underlying tree decompositions, and is able to produce a large number of high-quality decompositions.

Effective Quadtree Plus Binary Tree Block Partition Decision for Future Video Coding

Abstract:Block partition structure has been recognized as a crucial module in video coding scheme. Recently, a quadtree plus binary tree (QTBT) block partition structure has been proposed in the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET) development. Compared to the quadtree structure in HEVC, QTBT can achieve better coding performance with hugely increased encoding complexity. Here, we propose an effective QTBT partition decision algorithm to achieve a good trade-off between computational complexity and coding performance. In particular, at the Coding Tree Unit level, the partition parameters of QTBT are dynamically derived to adapt to the local characteristics without transmitting any overhead. Subsequently, at the Coding Unit level, a joint-classifier decision tree structure is designed to eliminate unnecessary iterations and meanwhile control the risk of false prediction. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve 64% encoding time reduction on average with only 1.26% increase in terms of bit rate. This greatly benefits the practical implementations of QTBT in real application scenarios.
Accelerating Evolutionary Construction Tree Extraction via Graph Partitioning

Abstract:Extracting a Construction Tree from potentially noisy point clouds is an important aspect of Reverse Engineering tasks in Computer Aided Design. Solutions based on algorithmic geometry impose constraints on usable model representations (e.g. quadric surfaces only) and noise robustness. Re-formulating the problem as a combinatorial optimization problem and solving it with an Evolutionary Algorithm can mitigate some of these constraints at the cost of increased computational complexity. This paper proposes a graph-based search space partitioning scheme that is able to accelerate Evolutionary Construction Tree extraction while exploiting parallelization capabilities of modern CPUs. The evaluation indicates a speed-up up to a factor of $46.6$ compared to the baseline approach while resulting tree sizes increased by $25.2\%$ to $88.6\%$.
