Abstract:We report simultaneous photometric and echelle-spectroscopic observations of the dwarf nova BZ UMa during which we were lucky to catch the system at the onset of an outburst, the development of which we traced in detail from quiescence to early decline. The outburst had a precursor, and was of a short duration (~5 days) with a highly asymmetrical light curve. On the rise we observed a `jump' during which the brightness almost doubled over the course of half an hour. Power spectra analysis revealed well-defined oscillations with period of ~42 minutes. Using Doppler tomography we found that the unusual emission distribution detected in quiescence held during the outburst. After the maximum a new emission source arose, from the inner hemisphere of the secondary star, which became the brightest at that time. We analyse this outburst in terms of `inside-out' and `outside-in' types, in order to determine which of these types occured in BZ UMa.

A Statistical Study of Iue Spectra of Dwarf Novae .1. Quiescence

Abstract:Based on more than 1200 IUE spectra of dwarf novae, we investigate the statistical properties of these systems, concerning the correlation of the spectra with parameters of the binary system. The results provide a way of testing the current accretion disk model and of understanding the physical conditions in dwarf novae. The present paper is restricted to IUE spectra of dwarf novae in quiescence. Our results show that the white dwarf, especially for the short-period and high-inclination systems, contributes considerably to the UV flux at short wavelengths in quiescence, while the accretion disk dominates the UV flux at long wavelengths, in particular for the systems above the period gap and with low inclinations. The equivalent widths of the emission lines in quiescence show strong dependence on the orbital period.
X-ray Spectroscopy of the Dwarf Nova Z Chamaeleontis in Quiescence and Outburst Using the XMM-Newton Observatory

Abstract:We present X-ray spectroscopy of the SU UMa-type dwarf nova (DN) Z Cha using the EPIC and RGS instruments onboard the XMM-Newton Observatory. The quiescent system can be modeled by collisional equilibrium or nonequilibrium plasma models, yielding a kT of 8.2-13.0 keV at a luminosity of (5.0-6.0)$\times$10$^{30}$ erg/s. The spectra yield better reduced $\chi^{2}$ using partial covering absorbers of cold and photoionized nature. The ionized absorber has an equivalent N$_H$=(3.4-5.9)$\times$10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and a log($\xi$)=3.5-3.7 with (50-60)% covering fraction when VNEI model (XSPEC) is used. The line diagnosis in quiescence shows no resonance lines with only detected forbidden lines of Ne, Mg, Si. The H-like C, O, Ne, and Mg are detected. The strongest line is O VIII with (2.7-4.6)$\times$10$^{-14}$ erg/s/cm$^2$. The quiescent X-ray emitting plasma is not collisional and not in ionization equilibrium which is consistent with hot ADAF-like accretion flows. The line diagnosis in outburst shows He-like O, and Ne with intercombination lines being the strongest along with weaker resonance lines. This indicates the plasma is more collisional and denser, but yet not in a collisional equilibrium, revealing ionization timescales of (0.97-1.4)$\times$10$^{11}$ s cm$^{-3}$. The R-ratios in outburst yield electron densities of (7-90)$\times$10$^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$ and the G-ratios yield electron temperatures of (2-3)$\times$10$^{6}$ K. The outburst luminosity is (1.4-2.5)$\times$10$^{30}$ erg/s. The flow is inhomogeneous in density. All detected lines are narrow with widths limited by the resolution of RGS yielding Keplerian rotational velocities $<$1000 km/s. This is too low for boundary layers, consistent with the nature of ADAF-like hot flows.

QU Vul: An Integral Field Spectroscopy Case Study of a Nova Shell

Abstract:We present GTC MEGARA high-dispersion integral field spectroscopic observations of the nova remnant QU\,Vul, which provide a comprehensive 3D view of this nova shell. The tomographic analysis of the H$\alpha$ emission reveals a complex physical structure characterized by an inhomogeneous and clumpy distribution of the material within this shell. The overall structure can be described as a prolate ellipsoid with an axial ratio of 1.4$\pm$0.2, a major axis inclination with the line of sight of $12^{\circ}\pm6^{\circ}$, and polar and equatorial expansion velocities $\approx$560 km~s$^{-1}$ and 400$\pm$60 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. The comparison of the expansion velocity on the plane of the sky with the angular expansion implies a distance of 1.43$\pm$0.23 kpc. The ionized mass is found to be $\approx 2\times 10^{-4}$ M$_\odot$, noting that the information on the 3D distribution of material within the nova shell has allowed us to reduce the uncertainty on its filling factor. The nova shell is still in its free expansion phase, which can be expected as the ejecta mass is much larger than the swept-up circumstellar medium mass. The 3D distribution and radial velocity of material within the nova shell provide an interpretation of the so-called "castellated" line profiles observed in early optical spectra of nova shells, which can be attributed to knots and clumps moving radially along different directions.

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Three Long Period Nova-Like Variables

Abstract:We have selected three nova-like variables at the long period extreme of nova-like orbital periods: V363 Aur, RZ Gru and AC Cnc, all with IUE archival far ultraviolet spectra. All are UX UMa type nova-like variables and all have $P_{orb} > 7$h. V363 Aur is a bona fide SW Sex star, and AC Cnc is a probable one, while RZ Gru has not proven to be a member of the SW Sex subclass. We have carried out the first synthetic spectral analysis of far ultraviolet spectra of the three systems using state-of-the-art models both of accretion disks and white dwarf photospheres. We find that the FUV spectral energy distribution of both V363 Aur and RZ Gru are in agreement with optically thick steady state accretion disk models in which the luminous disk accounts for 100% of the FUV light. We present accretion rates and model-derived distances for V363 Aur and RZ Gru. For AC Cnc, we find that a hot accreting white dwarf accounts for $\sim$ 60% of the FUV light with an accretion disk providing the rest. We compare our accretion rates and model-derived distances with estimates in the literature.

Abstract:The spectra of disc-dominated cataclysmic variables (CVs) often deviate from the spectra of accretion disc models; in particular, the Balmer jump and absorption lines are found to be shallower in the observations than in the models. We carried out a combined ultraviolet-optical spectral analysis of two dwarf novae: UZ Ser in outburst, decline, and quiescence, and CY Lyr on the rise to outburst and in outburst. We fit the Balmer jump and absorption lines, the continuum flux level and slope by adjusting the accretion rate, inclination, and disc outer radius. For both systems we find an accretion rate $\dot{M} \approx 8 \times 10^{-9}M_\odot$/yr in outburst, and $\dot{M} \approx 2-3 \times 10^{-9}M_\odot$/yr for the rise and decline phases. The outer disc radius we derive is smaller than expected ($R_{\rm disc} \approx 0.2a$, where $a$ is the binary separation), except during late rise (for CY Lyr) where $R_{\rm disc}=0.3a$. UZ Ser also reveals a 60,000~K white dwarf. These results show that during a dwarf nova cycle the radius of the disc is the largest just before the peak of the outburst, in qualitative agreement with the disc instability model for dwarf nova outbursts. We suspect that an additional emitting component (e.g. disc wind) is also at work to reduce the slope of the continuum and size of the Balmer jump and absorption lines. We stress that both the outer disc radius and disc wind need to be taken into account for more realistic disc modeling of CVs.

Long term UBV RI photometric and spectral monitoring of nova KT Eri during 2009-2023

Abstract:We present a status report of our intensive and long-term UBV RI photometric monitoring of nova KT Eri since its outbust in 2009. The old-nova in quiescence is characterized by very high excitation conditions (HeII 4686 being constantly the strongest emission line in optical spectra) and a complex-pattern photometric variability of one mag amplitude in which multi-periodicities (from hours to years) are mixed with chaotic activity of similar amplitude. Mean color and brightness levels are the same for pre- and post- outburst quiescence.

Exploring the archives: A search for novae in UVIT snapshots of M31

Abstract:Extensive multi-wavelength studies of novae have been carried out in our galaxy and in M31 for decades. However, UV studies of extragalactic novae are limited, especially those in quiescence. For the first time, we present a UV catalog of novae in M31 using the archival AstroSat UVIT imaging data. We used two image subtraction techniques to retrieve objects located deep into the M31 central region. We have found 42 novae in total in the UVIT images, 15 of which have been detected in multiple filters in FUV and NUV. The novae detected at quiescence show signatures of accretion disk from their UV spectral energy distributions, whereas those in the outburst phase show signatures of pseudo-photosphere. A few novae were also detected in multiple epochs. Some show a near-constant FUV magnitude at quiescence, while others caught near the outburst reveal pre-eruption dips in their light curves. We conclude with a discussion on the significance of UV surveys in illuminating theoretical predictions for novae systems, including detecting the elusive early UV flash.

Abstract:We carried out the photometric observations of the SU UMa-type dwarf nova ER UMa during 2011 and 2012, which showed the existence of persistent negative superhumps even during the superoutburst. We performed two-dimensional period analysis of its light curves by using a method called "least absolute shrinkage and selection operator" (Lasso) and "phase dispersion minimization" (PDM) analysis, and we found that the period of negative superhumps systematically changed between a superoutburst and the next superoutburst. The trend of the period change can beinterpreted as reflecting the change of the disk radius. This change of the disk radius is in good agreement with the predicted change of the disk radius by the thermal-tidal instability (TTI) model. The normal outbursts within a supercycle showed a general trend that the rising rate to maximum becomes slower as the next superoutburst approaches. The change can be interpreted as the consequence of the increased gas-stream flow onto the inner region of the disk as the result of the tilted disk. Some of the superoutbursts were found to be triggered by a precursor normal outburst when the positive superhumps appeared to develop. The positive and negative superhumps co-existed during the superoutburst. The positive superhumps were prominent only during four or five days after the supermaximum, while the signal of the negative superhumps became strong after the middle phase of the superoutburst plateau. A simple combination of the positive and negative superhumps was found to be insufficient in reproducing the complex profile variation. We were able to detect the developing phase of positive superhumps (stage A superhumps) for the first time in ER UMa-type dwarf novae. Using the period of stage A superhumps, we obtained a mass ratio of 0.100(15), which indicates that ER UMa is on the ordinary evolutional track of CVs.

Abstract:Using a previously developed technique, a study of moderate-resolution optical spectra was carried out, and sets of parameters for the dwarf novae V355 UMa, V521 Peg, VY Aqr, and PQ And were obtained. Observations of the systems in late relaxation state after a burst or in a quiescent state were carried out in 2020 and 2021 with the 6-m BTA telescope of SAO RAS. Their analysis took into account the requirement for an optimum description of the observed absorption profiles of the Balmer series lines with the model spectra of white dwarfs with radiative and convective transfer. As a result, the atmospheric parameters of the primaries were determined for all the systems, and when they were subsequently compared with models of the internal structure of white dwarf and main-sequence stars, sets of fundamental parameters of the objects were also determined. It has been established that analysis of the spectra of dwarf novae containing moderately cool white dwarfs with K provides better accuracy of their parameters than systems with hotter primaries. A simultaneous condition to be fulfilled for increasing accuracy is to carry out observations after the objects relax to a quiescent state, since the emission lines of the accretion disk significantly narrow the region of the analyzed spectrum. It has been found that the primary components of V355 UMa, V521 Peg, VY Aqr, and PQ And have masses within the range of , and their cool companions are red dwarfs with .

Characterizing X-ray and Radio emission in the Black Hole X-Ray Binary V404 Cygni during Quiescence

Abstract:We present results from multi-wavelength simultaneous X-ray and radio observations of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cyg in quiescence. Our coverage with NuSTAR provides the very first opportunity to study the X-ray spectrum of V404 Cyg at energies above 10 keV. The unabsorbed broad-band (0.3--30 keV) quiescent luminosity of the source is 8.9$\times$10$^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for a distance of 2.4 kpc. The source shows clear variability on short time scales (an hour to a couple of hours) in radio, soft X-ray and hard X-ray bands in the form of multiple flares. The broad-band X-ray spectra obtained from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR can be characterized with a power-law model having photon index $\Gamma$=2.12$\pm$0.07 (90\% confidence errors); however, residuals at high energies indicate spectral curvature significant at a 3$\sigma$ confidence level with e-folding energy of the cutoff to be 20$^{+20}_{-7}$ keV. Such curvature can be explained using synchrotron emission from the base of a jet outflow. Radio observations using the VLA reveal that the spectral index evolves on very fast time-scales (as short as 10 min.), switching between optically thick and thin synchrotron emission, possibly due to instabilities in the compact jet or stochastic instabilities in accretion rate. We explore different scenarios to explain this very fast variability.

The 2010 early outburst spectrum of the recurrent nova U Scorpii

Abstract:Aims. We present optical spectra of the fast recurrent nova U Sco during its recent outburst, obtained within 24 h of maximum light. Methods. We use medium resolution (R ~ 4000) spectra taken with the with the MagE spectrograph on the Magellan (Clay) 6.5 m telescope of the Las Campanas Observatories. Results. The spectrum is notable for its lack of a low ionization transient heavy element absorption system that is visible in the large majority of novae near maximum light. We suggest that this may be due to the dominance of inner Lagrangian L1 mass transfer and the absence of a circumbinary gas reservoir in this object.

Abstract:Time‐resolved eclipse spectroscopy of the nova‐like variable UX UMa obtained with the HST/FOS on 1994 August and November is analysed with eclipse mapping techniques to produce spatially resolved spectra of its accretion disc and gas stream as a function of distance from the disc centre. The inner accretion disc is characterized by a blue continuum filled with absorption bands and lines, which cross over to emission with increasing disc radius, similar to that reported by Rutten et al. at optical wavelengths. The comparison of spatially resolved spectra at different azimuths reveals a significant asymmetry in the disc emission at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths, with the disc side closest to the secondary star showing pronounced absorption by an ‘iron curtain’ and a Balmer jump in absorption. These results suggest the existence of an absorbing ring of cold gas whose density and/or vertical scale increase with disc radius. The spectrum of the infalling gas stream is noticeably different from the disc spectrum at the same radius suggesting that gas overflows through the impact point at the disc rim and continues along the stream trajectory, producing distinct emission down to 0.1 RL1. The spectrum of the uneclipsed light shows prominent emission lines of Lyα, N vλ 1241, Si ivλ 1400, C ivλ 1550, He iiλ 1640, and Mg iiλ 2800, and a UV continuum rising towards longer wavelengths. The Balmer jump appears clearly in emission indicating that the uneclipsed light has an important contribution from optically thin gas. The lines and optically thin continuum emission are most probably emitted in a vertically extended disc chromosphere + wind. The radial temperature profiles of the continuum maps are well described by a steady‐state disc model in the inner and intermediate disc regions (R ≤ 0.3 RL1). There is evidence of an increase in the mass accretion rate from August to November (from M. = 10−8.3 ± 0.1 to 10−8.1 ± 0.1 M⊙ yr−1), in accordance with the observed increase in brightness. Since the UX UMa disc seems to be in a high mass accretion, high‐viscosity regime in both epochs, this result suggests that the mass transfer rate of UX UMa varies substantially (≃ 50 per cent) on time‐scales of a few months. It is suggested that the reason for the discrepancies between the prediction of the standard disc model and observations is not an inadequate treatment of radiative transfer in the disc atmosphere, but rather the presence of additional important sources of light in the system besides the accretion disc (e.g. optically thin continuum emission from the disc wind and possible absorption by circumstellar cool gas).

HST/STIS UV Spectroscopy of Two Quiescent X-ray Novae: A0620-00 and Centaurus X-4

Abstract:In 1998 we made UV spectroscopic observations with HST/STIS of A0620-00 and Cen X-4, which are two X-ray novae (aka soft X-ray transients). These binary systems are similar in all respects except that the former contains a black hole and the latter contains a neutron star. A UV spectrum (1700-3100A) is presented for the quiescent state of each system in the context of previously published UV/optical and X-ray data. The non-stellar, continuum spectrum of black hole A0620-00 has a prominent UV/optical peak centered at about 3500A. In contrast the spectrum of neutron-star Cen X-4 lacks a peak and rises steadily with frequency over the entire UV/optical band. In the optical, the two systems are comparably luminous. However, black hole A0620-00 is about 6 times less luminous at 1700A, and about 40 times less luminous in the X-ray band. The broadband spectrum of A0620-00 is discussed in terms of the advection-dominated accretion flow model.

Unveiling the nature of two dwarf novae: CRTS J080846.2+313106 and V416 Dra

Abstract:We present the analysis of optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of two non-magnetic cataclysmic variables, namely CRTS J080846.2+313106 and V416 Dra. CRTS J080846.2+313106 has been found to vary with a period of 4.9116$\pm$0.0003 h, which was not found in earlier studies and is provisionally suggested as the orbital period of the system. In both long-period systems, the observed dominant signal at second harmonic of the orbital frequency and the orbital modulation during quiescence are suggestive of ellipsoidal variation from changing aspects of the secondary, with an additional contribution from the accretion stream or hotspot. However, during the outburst, the hotspot itself is overwhelmed by the increased brightness, which is possibly associated with the accretion disc. The mid-eclipse phase for V416 Dra occurs earlier and the width of the eclipse is greater during outbursts compared to quiescence, suggesting an increased accretion disc radius during outbursts. Furthermore, the investigation of accretion disc eclipse in V416 Dra implies that a total disc eclipse is possible during quiescence, whereas the disc seems to be partially obscured during outbursts, which further signifies that the disc may grow in size as the outburst progresses. Optical spectra of CRTS J080846.2+313106 and V416 Dra are typical of dwarf novae during quiescence, and they both show a significant contribution from the M2-4V secondary. The light curve patterns, orbital periods, and spectra observed in both systems look remarkably similar, and seem to resemble the characteristics of U Gem-type dwarf novae.

Abstract:We present time-resolved FUV spectra of the dwarf novae SS Cyg and WX Hyi in quiescence from observations using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on the Astro-1 and Astro-2 Space Shuttle missions and the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Both dwarf novae are characterized by blue continua that extend to the Lyman limit punctuated by broad emission lines including transitions of O VI, N V, Si IV, and C IV. The continuum of WX Hyi can be fit with a white dwarf model with physically reasonable model parameters, but neither system actually shows unambiguous signatures of white dwarf emission. The shape and flux of the spectrum of SS Cyg cannot be self-consistently reconciled with a white dwarf providing all of the FUV continuum flux. Combination white dwarf/disk or white dwarf/optically thin plasma models improve the fit but still do not give physically reasonable model parameters for a quiescent dwarf nova. Assuming that the UV emission lines arise from the disk, the line shapes indicate that surface fluxes fall roughly as R^{-2} in both systems. Fits to the double-peaked line profiles in SS Cyg indicate that the FUV line forming region is concentrated closer to the white dwarf than that of the optical lines and provide no evidence of a hole in the inner disk. Although the flux from SS Cyg was relatively constant during all of our observations, WX Hyi showed significant variability during the GHRS observations. In WX Hyi, the line and continuum fluxes are (with the exception of He II) highly correlated, indicating a link between the formation mechanisms of the line and continuum regions.

Abstract:We report the results of a long campaign of time-series photometry on the nova-like variable UX Ursae Majoris during 2015. It spanned 150 nights, with ~1800 hours of coverage on 121 separate nights. The star was in its normal `high state' near magnitude V=13, with slow waves in the light curve and eclipses every 4.72 hours. Remarkably, the star also showed a nearly sinusoidal signal with a full amplitude of 0.44 mag and a period of 3.680 +/- 0.007 d. We interpret this as the signature of a retrograde precession (wobble) of the accretion disc. The same period is manifest as a +/-33 s wobble in the timings of mid-eclipse, indicating that the disc's centre of light moves with this period. The star also showed strong `negative superhumps' at frequencies w_orb+N and 2w_orb+N, where w_orb and N are respectively the orbital and precession frequencies. It is possible that these powerful signals have been present, unsuspected, throughout the more than 60 years of previous photometric studies.
BV photometric observations of the flickering of the dwarf nova RX And

Abstract:We report photometry of the intranight variability of the dwarf nova RX And in two bands (B and V). The observations are carried out during three nights in November-December 2022 at the 50/70~cm Schmidt telescope of the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory. The observations indicate that the amplitude of the flickering is about 0.5 mag in B band when the star is in faint state (m_V=13.5), but it is considerably lower (less than 0.1 mag) when the star is bright (m_V=10.9). The mass accretion rate in high state is estimated to be $1.2 \times 10^{-9}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Combining our data and GAIA distances we find for the mass donor in RX~And spectral type K6V-K7V. The data are available upon request from the authors.

Abstract:An optical light curve of SU UMa type dwarf nova V1504 Cyg taken by Kepler was analysed in order to study fast optical variability (flickering). We calculated power density spectra and rms-flux relations for two different stages of activity, i.e. quiescence and regular outbursts. A multicomponent power density spectrum with two break frequencies was found during both activity stages. The rms-flux relation is obvious only in the quiescent data. However, while the collection of all outburst data do not show this variability, every individual outburst does show it in the majority of cases keeping the rms value approximately in the same interval. Furthermore, the same analysis was performed for light curve subsamples taken from the beginning, middle and the end of the supercycle both for quiescence and regular outbursts. Every light curve subsample shows the same multicomponent power density spectrum. The stability of the break frequencies over the supercycle can be confirmed for all frequencies except for the high break frequency during outburst, which shows variability, but with rather low confidence. Finally, the low break frequency can be associated with the geometrically thin disc or its inner edge, while the high break frequency can originate from the inner geometrically thick hot disc. Furthermore, with our statistical method to simulate flickering light curves, we show that the outburst flickering light curve of V1504 Cyg needs an additional constant flux level to explain the observed rms-flux behaviour. Therefore, during the outbursts another non-turbulent radiation source should be present.
