Abstract:Smartphones and tablets are an integral part of our daily lives, and their capabilities extend well beyond communication and entertainment. With a broad choice of built-in sensors, using these mobile devices as experimental tools (MDETs) allows for a many different measurements, covering several fields of physics (mechanics, acoustics and waves, magnetism, optics, etc.). Building on this development, the present contribution is about exploring the potential of MDETs in physics undergraduate research. Two examples related to acoustics (bottle Helmholtz resonator, singing glasses) will be discussed in detail, and four further possibilities are referred to as perspectives. Results of these student research projects are encouraging throughout (accuracy, agreement with theory), in many cases providing a basis for further improvements and insight. Additionally, it is argued that these examples provide a "proof of concept" that the use of smartphones for experimental projects can mobilize and stimulate among students the educational potential of "higher order thinking skills" (HOTs) widely discussed in the literature on undergraduate research, such as autonomy, curiosity, creativity, and others.

Abstract:We propose a home laboratory in which a telescopic vacuum cleaner pipe and a smartphone are used to investigate sound speed and acoustic resonance. When the pipe is hit or the hands clapped near one end, the sound produced is registered by a smartphone. The resonant frequency is obtained using a smartphone and an appropriate application. Varying the pipe's length and registering the corresponding resonant frequency allows to obtain the sound speed. This home-lab, first proposed during Covid-19 pandemic, has been incorporated as a home challenge to experiment with acoustic resonance in new normal times.

Abstract:The use of smartphones as laboratory tools for school physics experiments has recently received attention for the possibility of carrying out a wide variety of didactic experiments with low-cost equipments. This article presents a study on a damped oscillator consisting of an elastic rubber loop and a mass. The investigation of the oscillations was conducted by using a smartphone. The experimental data was interpreted by a simple model, obtaining information on the viscoelastic properties of the rubber material.

In the paper we describe a mechanical model of the smartphone's accelerometer, which can be used in classroom to allow students to better understand the principle of the accelerometer even by students at the beginning of the study in physics.

Abstract:Teaching wave-physics and related phenomena with musical instruments results in a very pleasant and didactic approach for undergraduate students. Music allows teaching concepts such as frequency, amplitude, harmonics, resonance, and so on. In addition, one may use some instruments to calculate other quantities such as the air density or the speed of sound in the air. In this work, we use a conventional bamboo-made panflute and a smartphone to obtain the speed of sound in the air. The method is simple. It consists of making the pipes sound and measuring the frequency of the fundamental harmonic. The frequency is approximately proportional to the inverse of the pipe length and this dependence allows us to obtain the speed of sound quite accurately from the slope of the curve. We compare it with the theoretical value and analyse three possible causes of discrepancy such as the end correction, the air composition, or the straightness of the tubes. The proposed experiment can be carried out completely by the students since it does not involve any danger. In addition, it could be appropriate for undergraduate students or even school students.

Abstract:Smartphone is a powerful internet connected computer packed with internal sensors that measure sound, light, acceleration and magnetic field strength. Physics teachers can use them as measurement devices to demonstrate science concepts and promote the joy of learning. Some research has also shown the benefits of using smartphones for teaching and learning physics. This article aims to extend mobile phone research with our open source apps and low-cost experimental design. The three experiments that we designed include radioactivity, line spectrum, standing sound wave and polarization of light. Students are able to conduct experiments and collect data easily without using bulky data loggers or laptops. Substituting a data logger with a smartphone will mean that every student can possess his/her own measuring tool inside and outside the classroom, instead of having to share with a large group of students in a scheduled lab. By empowering the students to conduct their own experiments and collect data, the use of the smartphone as a tool aims to support student learning anytime and anywhere, igniting greater joy of learning

Abstract:We propose an easy experiment that allows students to determine the speed of sound through a simple time-of-flight measurement using two smartphones. The concept of using the sensors in mobile phones for physics experiments has become a well-known option for science teachers. Since these devices are readily available to most students and teachers, experiments can be set up at little to no cost while generating fascination and motivation for the students thanks to the novelty of using their own devices in an unusual way. From all the sensors available in modern phones, the microphone offers the best temporal resolution by a huge margin as it records samples at a rate of (typically) 48 kHz. As this fast sampling rate is a requirement for high-quality audio recordings, it has been around long before smartphones offered other sensors, and audio inputs have already been used for experiments on soundcards in desktop computers.

Abstract:Abstract Experimenting is a basic skill that science students must have. Experimental activities are generally carried out in the laboratory. But by using a smartphone, many experiments can be done outside the laboratory. This research is an example of an experiment using a smartphone that can be carried out outside the laboratory. This study aims to measure the coefficient of marbles restitution through a simple experiment assisted by a smartphone. Marbles are dropped from a certain height, the Phyphox application on a smartphone will record experimental data through a sound sensor. Experimental data recorded through a smartphone is used to analyze the coefficient of restitution and mechanical energy of marble during a collision with the floor. The experimental results show that smartphones can be used to determine the coefficient of restitution and mechanical energy as an experimental tool. We hope that this experiment will be an alternative method for lecturers or physics teachers to demonstrate bouncing objects to determine the coefficient of restitution and mechanical energy loss.

Abstract:Resonance is an ubiquitous phenomenon present in many systems. In particular, air resonance in cavities was studied by Hermann von Helmholtz in the 1850s. Originally used as acoustic filters, Helmholtz resonators are rigid-wall cavities that reverberate at given fixed frequencies. An adjustable type of resonator is the so-called universal Helmholtz resonator, a device consisting of two sliding cylinders capable of producing sounds over a continuous range of frequencies. Here we propose a simple experiment using a smartphone and normal bottle of tea with a nearly uniform cylindrical section, which, when filled with water at different levels, mimics a universal Helmholtz resonator. Blowing over the bottle, we notice different sounds are produced. Taking advantage of the great processing capacity of smartphones, sound spectra together with frequencies of resonance are obtained in real time.
Smartphone Recordings are Comparable to "Gold Standard" Recordings for Acoustic Measurements of Voice

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship and comparability of cepstral and spectral measures of voice obtained from a high-cost "flat" microphone and precision sound level meter (SLM) vs. high-end and entry level models of commonly and currently used smartphones (iPhone i12 and iSE; Samsung s21 and s9 smartphones). Device comparisons were also conducted in different settings (sound-treated booth vs. typical "quiet" office room) and at different mouth-to-microphone distances (15 and 30 cm). Methods: The SLM and smartphone devices were used to record a series of speech and vowel samples from a prerecorded diverse set of 24 speakers representing a wide range of sex, age, fundamental frequency (F0), and voice quality types. Recordings were analyzed for the following measures: smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPP in dB); the low vs high spectral ratio (L/H Ratio in dB); and the Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia (CSID). Results: A strong device effect was observed for L/H Ratio (dB) in both vowel and sentence contexts and for CSID in the sentence context. In contrast, device had a weak effect on CPP (dB), regardless of context. Recording distance was observed to have a small-to-moderate effect on measures of CPP and CSID but had a negligible effect on L/H Ratio. With the exception of L/H Ratio in the vowel context, setting was observed to have a strong effect on all three measures. While these aforementioned effects resulted in significant differences between measures obtained with SLM vs. smartphone devices, the intercorrelations of the measurements were extremely strong (r's > 0.90), indicating that all devices were able to capture the range of voice characteristics represented in the voice sample corpus. Regression modeling showed that acoustic measurements obtained from smartphone recordings could be successfully converted to comparable measurements obtained by a "gold standard" (precision SLM recordings conducted in a sound-treated booth at 15 cm) with small degrees of error. Conclusions: These findings indicate that a variety of commonly available modern smartphones can be used to collect high quality voice recordings usable for informative acoustic analysis. While device, setting, and distance can have significant effects on acoustic measurements, these effects are predictable and can be accounted for using regression modeling.
Smartphone sensors and video analysis: two allies in the Physics laboratory battle field

Abstract:Recently, two technologies: video analysis and mobile device sensors have considerable impacted Physics teaching. However, in general, these techniques are usually used independently. Here, we focus on a less-explored feature: the possibility of using supplementary video analysis and smartphone (or other mobile devices) sensors. First, we review some experiments reported in the literature using both tools. Next, we present an experiment specially suited to compare both resources and discuss in detail some typical results. We found that, as a rule, video analysis provides distances or angular variables, while sensors supplies velocity or acceleration (either linear or angular). The numerical differentiation of higher derivatives, i.e. acceleration, usually implies noisier results while the opposite process (the numerical integration of a temporal evolution) gives rise to the accumulation of errors. In a classroom situation, the comparison between these two techniques offers an opportunity to discuss not only concepts related to the specific experiment but also with the experimental and numerical aspects including their pros and cons.

Experimenting with RC and RL series circuits using smartphones as signal generators and oscilloscopes

Abstract:Simple, portable and low-cost experiments as RC and RL series circuits are proposed to experiment with DC circuits. Very common elements are used: a few electronics components (resistors, capacitors, coils and connecting wires) and two smartphones. We consider the charging and discharging of a capacitor in the RC circuit and also that of coil in the RL circuit. Using a smartphone as an oscilloscope we observe voltages variations which are the transient response to a square signal generated in the second smartphone. These voltage variations are directly related to the electrostatic or magnetic energy stored in the circuits. The experimental data have been collected with the smartphone used as an oscilloscope and corroborated with theoretical predictions based on Kirchhoff's laws. The comparison showed differences of the order of the 1\% or less between the calculated capacitance or inductance compared to the manufacturer values. This approach which avoids the use of expensive signal generators, oscilloscopes, or any specialized hardware can be performed in less-favored contexts and even as a home assignment.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the use of sensors incorporated in mobile devices as possible mobile laboratories at the service of teaching experimental sciences. Mobile devices, smartphones, tablets, laptops, microbit cards, are a resource for making measurements of the physical world, since they have a set of built-in sensors that allow to measure position, linear speed, angular speed, acceleration, pressure, sound, color, magnetic field, proximity or luminosity, among others. Also, these devices have greatly improved the performance of their video cameras, allowing to easily shoot at high speed and high resolution. Given its portability it is possible to work in the laboratory itself or in other areas such as a gym, a park or your own home, transcending the traditional scope of the laboratory. Characterization of the iPhone LiDAR-Based Sensing System for Vibration Measurement and Modal Analysis

Abstract:Portable depth sensing using time-of-flight LiDAR principles is available on iPhone 13 Pro and similar Apple mobile devices. This study sought to characterize the LiDAR sensing system for measuring full-field vibrations to support modal analysis. A vibrating target was employed to identify the limits and quality of the sensor in terms of noise, frequency, and range, and the results were compared to a laser displacement transducer. In addition, properties such as phone-to-target distance and lighting conditions were investigated. It was determined that the optimal phone-to-target distance range is between 0.30 m and 2.00 m. Despite an indicated sampling frequency equal to the 60 Hz framerate of the RGB camera, the LiDAR depth map sampling rate is actually 15 Hz, limiting the utility of this sensor for vibration measurement and presenting challenges if the depth map time series is not downsampled to 15 Hz before further processing. Depth maps were processed with Stochastic Subspace Identification in a Monte Carlo manner for stochastic modal parameter identification of a flexible steel cantilever. Despite significant noise and distortion, the natural frequencies were identified with an average difference of 1.9% in comparison to the laser displacement transducer data, and high-resolution mode shapes including uncertainty ranges were obtained and compared to an analytical solution counterpart. Our findings indicate that mobile LiDAR measurements can be a powerful tool in modal identification if used in combination with prior knowledge of the structural system. The technology has significant potential for applications in structural health monitoring and diagnostics, particularly where non-contact vibration sensing is useful, such as in flexible scaled laboratory models or field scenarios where access to place physical sensors is challenging.

Abstract:In this study, the results of a vast experimental campaign on the applicability of a smartphone-based technique for bridge monitoring are presented. Specifically, the vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI)-based approach is exploited as a cost-effective means to estimate the natural frequencies of bridges, with the final aim of possibly developing low-cost and diffused infrastructure monitoring system. The analysis is performed using a common hybrid vehicle, fully equipped with classical piezoelectric accelerometers and a smartphone MEMS accelerometer, to record its vertical accelerations while passing over the bridge. In this regard, the experimental campaign is carried out considering the vehicle moving with a constant velocity on a bridge in the city of Palermo (Italy). Appropriate identification procedures are then employed to determine the modal data of the bridge from the recorded accelerations. Further, comparisons with the results of a standard Operational Modal Analysis procedure, using accelerometers directly mounted on the structure, are presented. Experimental VBI-based analyses are performed also considering the effect of several different vehicle velocities. Further, the applicability of smartphone-based sensor data is investigated, exploiting the possibility of using up-to-date smartphone accelerometers for recording the vehicle accelerations. In this regard, comparison between piezoelectric accelerometers and MEMS ones is performed to assess the reliability of these sensors for the determination of bridge modal properties.

Abstract:The work describes the use of readily available and economical quartz crystal torsional resonators for microweighing. The resonance behavior was probed by impedance analysis. Torsional resonators are straightforwardly adapted to the detection electronics usually employed for driving a quartz crystal microbalance. The analysis proceeds as with quartz crystal resonators. The measurement of the viscoelastic parameters of a silicone oil gave results consistent with the corresponding low-frequency data. Thickness determinations on a film formed from a polymer dispersion have confirmed that torsional resonators indeed function as microbalances when the sample is thin enough. Biofilm formation is easily monitored, as well.

Abstract:A smartphone-based analysis system is favored for point-of-care testing applications. The present work proposes a novel micro-spectroscopy/imaging system comprising a portable spectrometer as an optical sensor and a compact homemade microscope to acquire the image and spectra of micron-scale regions. Protein concentration quantification based on the bicinchoninic acid method was demonstrated with the proposed micro-spectroscopy/imaging system to analyse the spectrometer signals. Morphologies of onion endothelial and human breast cancer cells, used as biological sample models, were characterized to demonstrate the microscopic imaging capacity of the device. The ability to simultaneously obtain morphological and spectral information using the proposed portable device was demonstrated by examining the 10 mu m sub-pixels of a smartphone screen. These results highlight the potential for adopting a smartphone-based micro-spectroscopy/imaging system for point-of-care testing.

Abstract:Described is an experiment in which a smartphone was caused to move at steady state in a vertical plane, on a path that was nearly circular. During a time interval of data acquisition that encompassed multiple orbits, the acceleration of the phone was measured by means of its internal accelerometer. A subsequent analysis of the data that was collected shows reasonable agreement between experiment and a simple theory of the motion.

Abstract:This study is a first attempt to investigate effectiveness of smartphone-based activities on students' conceptual understanding of acceleration. 143 secondary school students (15–16 years old) were involved in two types of activities: smartphone- and non-smartphone activities. The latter consisted in data logging and 'cookbook' activities. For the sake of comparison, all activities featured the same phenomena, i.e., the motion on an inclined plane and pendulum oscillations. A pre-post design was adopted, using open questionnaires as probes. Results show only weak statistical differences between the smartphone and non-smartphone groups. Students who followed smartphone activities were more able to design an experiment to measure acceleration and to correctly describe acceleration in a free fall motion. However, students of both groups had many difficulties in drawing acceleration vector along the trajectory of the studied motion. Results suggest that smartphone-based activities may be effective substitutes of traditional experimental settings and represent a valuable aid for teachers who want to implement laboratory activities at secondary school level. However, to achieve a deeper conceptual understanding of acceleration, some issues need to be addressed: what is the reference system of the built-in smartphone sensor; relationships between smartphone acceleration graphs and experimental setup; vector representation of the measured acceleration.

Abstract:Using smartphones in experimental physics teachings offers many advantages in term of engagement, pedagogy and flexibility. But it presents the drawbacks of possibly endangering the device and also facing the heterogeneity of available sensors on different smartphones. We present a low-cost alternative that preserves the advantages of smartphones: using a microcontroller equipped with a large variety of sensors that transmits data to a smartphone using Bluetooth Low-Energy protocol. This device can be lent to students with little risks and used to perform a wide range of experiments. It opens the way to new types of physics teachings.
