Abstract:Possible for science itself, conceptually, to have and will understand differently, let alone science also seen as technology, such as computer science. After all, science and technology are viewpoints diverse by either individual, community, or social. Generally, it depends on socioeconomic capabilities. So it is with computer science has become a phenomenon and fashionable, where based on the stream of documents, various issues arise in either its theory or implementation, adapting different communities, or designing curriculum holds in the education system.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new definition of science based on the distinction between the activity of scientists and the product of that activity: the former is denoted (lower-case) science and the latter (upper-case) Science. These definitions are intended to clarify the nature of scientific knowledge, its authority as well as its limitations, and how scientific knowledge differs from other forms of human knowledge. The body of knowledge we call Science is exemplified by elementary arithmetic: it has the following properties: (i) Science is collective, public knowledge; (ii) Science is universal and free of contradiction; (iii) Science emerges from science; (iv) Science is nevertheless bathed in ignorance and subject to change. These properties imply that many questions that are of great interest to humanity are out of reach to Science, since they necessarily involve individual and group commitments and beliefs. Examples are questions of ethics, religion, politics, art and even technology, for which diversity is a fundamental virtue.

Abstract:The delimitation between science and pseudoscience is part of the more general task of determining which beliefs are epistemologically justified. Standards for demarcation may vary by domain, but several basic principles are universally accepted. Karl Popper proposed falsifiability as an important criterion in distinguishing between science and pseudoscience. He argues that verification and confirmation can play no role in formulating a satisfactory criterion of demarcation. Instead, it proposes that scientific theories be distinguished from non-scientific theories by testable claims that future observations might reveal to be false.

Abstract:Recent developments in cybernetics have challenged key tenets in the philosophy of science. The philosophy of science constitutes a theory of knowledge that is often called realism. However, the philosophy of science is not a unified field, there are a variety of points of view. Contemporary cybernetics, meanwhile, is developing a philosophy called constructivism. This paper compares cybernetics with two important schools of thought within the philosophy of science, lists several different assumptions that lead to misunderstandings between scientists and cyberneticians, and then suggests a way of resolving the differences not by rejecting science but by enlarging it.

Abstract:The problem of establishing intensional criteria to demarcate science from non-science, and in particular science from pseudoscience, received a great amount of attention in the 20th century philosophy of science. It remains unsolved. This article compares demarcation criteria found in Marcus Tullius Cicero's rejection of genethliac astrology and other pseudo-divinatory techniques in his De divinatione (44 BCE) with criteria advocated by a broad selection of modern philosophers of science and other specialists in science studies. Remarkable coincidences across two millennia are found on five basic criteria, which hints at a certain historical stability of some of the most fundamental features of a concept of "science" broadly construed.

Abstract:The ubiquitous presence of computer simulations in all kinds of research areas evidence their role as the new driving force for the advancement of science and engineering research. Nothing seems to escape the image of success that computer simulations project onto the research community and the general public. One simple way to illustrate this consists of asking ourselves how would contemporary science and engineering look like without the use of computer simulations. The answer would certainly diverge from the current image we have of scientific and engineering research. As much as computer simulations are successful, they are also methods that fail in their purpose of inquiring about the world; and as much as researchers make use of them, computer simulations raise important questions that are at the heart of contemporary science and engineering practice. In this respect, computer simulations make a fantastic subject of research for the natural sciences, the social sciences, engineering and, as in our case, also for philosophy. Abstract:Philosophers of science have long tried to identify some demarcation line capable of distinguishing science from pseudoscience. Nonetheless, no ultimate set of requirements has so far been achieved, leaving demarcation uncertain and fluctuating, if not merely rhetorical. The habit of using the word ‘science’ to address a specific kind of knowledge is a modern practice, with ‘science’ having gradually taken over terms like ‘natural philosophy’ and ‘natural history.’ Thereby, the term ‘pseudoscience’ is also a recent one, with its meaning running alongside scientific endeavors of the nineteenth century. The article contributes to the debate aiming to pragmatically describe the function of pseudoscience in epistemology. To account for this, we argue that questions like What is pseudoscience? or What makes science science? would be better replaced by the question What do people do with the word pseudoscience?

Abstract:Terms like "Science of Cyber" or "Cyber Science" have been appearing in literature with growing frequency, and influential organizations initiated research initiatives toward developing such a science even though it is not clearly defined. We propose to define the domain of the science of cyber security by noting the most salient artifact within cyber security -- malicious software -- and defining the domain as comprised of phenomena that involve malicious software (as well as legitimate software and protocols used maliciously) used to compel a computing device or a network of computing devices to perform actions desired by the perpetrator of malicious software (the attacker) and generally contrary to the intent (the policy) of the legitimate owner or operator (the defender) of the computing device(s). We further define the science of cyber security as the study of relations -- preferably expressed as theoretically-grounded models -- between attributes, structures and dynamics of: violations of cyber security policy; the network of computing devices under attack; the defenders' tools and techniques; and the attackers' tools and techniques where malicious software plays the central role. We offer a simple formalism of these key objects within cyber science and systematically derive a classification of primary problem classes within cyber science.

Abstract:An attempt to redefine science in the 21st century (BK Jennings, On the Nature of Science, Physics in Canada, 63(7) 2007) has abandoned traditional notions of natural law and objective reality, blurred the distinctions between natural science and natural history, elevated Occam's razor from an epistemological preference to a scientific principle, and elevated peer-review and experimental care as equals with repeatable experiment as arbiters of scientific validity. Our comments review the long-established axioms of the scientific method, remind readers of the distinctions between science and history, disprove the generality of Occam's razor by counter example, and highlight the risks of accepting additional scientific arbiters as equal to repeatable experiment.

Abstract:For a variety of inter-related cultural, organizational, and political reasons, progress in climate science and the actual solution of scientific problems in this field have moved at a much slower rate than would normally be possible. Not all these factors are unique to climate science, but the heavy influence of politics has served to amplify the role of the other factors. Such factors as the change in the scientific paradigm from a dialectic opposition between theory and observation to an emphasis on simulation and observational programs, the inordinate growth of administration in universities and the consequent increase in importance of grant overhead, and the hierarchical nature of formal scientific organizations are cosidered. This paper will deal with the origin of the cultural changes and with specific examples of the operation and interaction of these factors. In particular, we will show how political bodies act to control scientific institutions, how scientists adjust both data and even theory to accommodate politically correct positions, and how opposition to these positions is disposed of.

Implications of computer science theory for the simulation hypothesis

Abstract:The simulation hypothesis has recently excited renewed interest, especially in the physics and philosophy communities. However, the hypothesis specifically concerns \textit{computers} that simulate physical universes, which means that to formally investigate it we need to couple computer science theory with physics. Here I couple those fields with the physical Church-Turing thesis. I then exploit that coupling to investigate of some of the computer science theory aspects of the simulation hypothesis. In particular, I use Kleene's second recursion theorem to prove that it is mathematically possible for us to be a simulation that is being run on a computer - by us. In such a self-simulation, there would be two identical instances of us; the question of which of those is ``really us'' is meaningless. I also show how Rice's theorem provides some interesting impossibility results concerning simulation and self-simulation; briefly describe the philosophical implications of fully homomorphic encryption for (self-)simulation; and briefly investigate the graphical structure of universes simulating universes simulating universes ..., among other issues. I end by describing some of the possible avenues for future research.

Abstract:Abstract Science plays a central role in propelling social progress and evolution as it serves as a source of knowledge that catalysts innovation and fosters critical thinking. In this essay, the author expounds some reflections that aim to elucidate the nature of scientific knowledge and the limits of what we can comprehend about the physical world. Historically, one of the key questions in the philosophy of science has been whether or not we can truly comprehend everything about the physical world. This enquiry delves into the very essence of scientific knowledge. While scientific discovery is typically the result of planned causal research, historical exceptions to this rule exist. In our pursuit of knowledge, it is essential to differentiate between ‘truth’ and ‘reality’. Ultimately, the historical perspective highlights the importance of ongoing critical reflection and debate within the philosophical theory of human knowledge.

Abstract:I reconsider the status of computationalism (or, in a weak sense, functionalism): the claim that being a realization of some (as yet unspecified) class of abstract machine is both necessary and sufficient for having genuine, full-blooded, mentality. This doctrine is now quite widely (though by no means universally) seen as discredited. My position is that, though it is undoubtedly an unsatisfactory (perhaps even repugnant) thesis, the arguments against it are still rather weak. In particular, I critically reassess John Searle's infamous Chinese Room Argument and also some relevant aspects of Karl Popper's theory of the Open Universe. I conclude that the status of computationalism must still be regarded as undecided, and that it may still provide a satisfactory framework for research.
Curricular Complexity Versus Quality of Computer Science Programs

Abstract:In this research paper we describe a study that involves measuring the complexities of undergraduate curricula offered by computer science departments, and then comparing them to the quality of these departments, where quality is determined by a metric-based ranking system. The study objective was to determine whether or not a relationship exists between the quality of computer science departments and the complexity of the curricula they offer. The relationship between curricular complexity and program quality was previously investigated for the case of undergraduate electrical engineering programs, with surprising results. It was found that if the US News & World Report Best Undergraduate Programs ranking is used as a proxy for quality, then a statistically significant difference in curricular complexities exists between higher and lower quality electrical engineering programs. Furthermore, it was found that higher quality electrical engineering programs tend to have lower complexity curricula, and vice versa. In the study reported in this paper, a sufficient amount of data was collected in order to determine that an inverse relationship between program quality and curricular complexity also exists in undergraduate computer science departments. This brings up an interesting question regarding the extent to which this phenomenon exists across the spectrum of STEM disciplines.

Abstract:Computer science has experienced dramatic growth and diversification over the last twenty years. Towards a current understanding of the structure of this discipline, we analyze a cohort of the computer science literature using the DBLP database. For insight on the features of this cohort and the relationship within its components, we constructed article level clusters based on either direct citations or co-citations, and reconciled them to major and minor subject categories in the Scopus All Science Journal Classification (ASJC). We described complementary insights from clustering by direct citation and co-citation, and both point to the increase in computer science publications and their scope. Our analysis shows cross-category clusters, some that interact with external fields, such as the biological sciences, while others remain inward looking.

This paper elaborates some typical opinions and argues that these opinions,which arose from the political aim or racist prejudice,do not suffice to show that science is related to race. Even if the scientific style of Einstein is influenced by Judaism,we can't call his theory Jewish science. Science is objective and it is objectivity that ensures science has nothing to do with race. All attempts that advocate racist science will fail.

Abstract:The result of misunderstanding science by students is their inability as future citizens to impact science public policies. The solution argued last year included creating courses in science studies serving two purposes: destroy students’ stereotypical certainties about science and help them become “historical realists” in regard to scientific practices. But we also speculated that dismissing the myth of scientific objectivity and teaching the historical and sociological underpinnings of science might lead to turning students into epistemological relativists. We now have a solution to the social-constructivist trap stemming from studies of science. This paper inquires into American contexts such as scientific illiteracy, post-modernism in high schools and colleges, and the media, all of which help produce a generalized inability to demarcate science from pseudoscience. Science studies courses guide students into both making epistemological distinctions and understanding the nature of science. Informing methodologies, course format, and bibliography follow.
