Abstract:Maxwell’s vacuum equations are integrated for admissible electromagnetic fields in homogeneous spaces. Admissible electromagnetic fields are those for which the space group generates an algebra of symmetry operators (integrals of motion) that is isomorphic to the algebra of group operators. Two frames associated with the group of motions are used to obtain systems of ordinary differential equations to which Maxwell’s equations reduce. The solutions are obtained in quadratures. The potentials of the admissible electromagnetic fields and the metrics of the spaces contained in the obtained solutions depend on six arbitrary time functions, so it is possible to use them to integrate field equations in the theory of gravity.

Abstract:The problem of classification of exact solutions of Maxwell's vacuum equations for admissible electromagnetic fields and homogeneous space-time with the group of motions $G_3(VIII)$ according to the Bianchi classification is considered. All non-equivalent solutions are found. The classification problem for remaining groups of motions $G_3(N)$ has already been solved in the other papers. That is why all non-equivalent solutions of empty Maxwell equations for all homogeneous spaces with admissible electromagnetic fields are known now.

Abstract:All non-equivalent solutions of vacuum Maxwell equations are found for the case when space-time manifolds admit simply transitive four-parameter groups of motions $G_4(N)$. The potentials of the admissible electromagnetic fields admit the existence of the algebra of motion integrals of the Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon-Fock equations which is isomorphic to the algebra of the group operators for the same group $G_4(N)$

Abstract:We consider a method for obtaining equations of the Hamiltonian dynamics for system of interacting massive charged particles using the general relativistic Einstein–Hilbert action. In the general relativistic case, Vlasov-type equations are derived in the nonrelativistic and weakly relativistic limits. Expressions are proposed for corrections to the Poisson equation, which can contribute to the effective action of dark matter and dark energy. In this case, an efficient approach to synchronizing the proper times of different particles of a many-particle system is proposed. Based on the obtained expressions for the action, we analyze the possibility of a composite structure of the cosmological term in the Einstein equations. Reduced Euler equations leading to the Milne–McCrea cosmological model are derived using a hydrodynamic substitution and are solved in the self-similar class.

Abstract:For an elliptic complex of first order differential operators on a smooth manifold, we define a system of two equations which can be thought of as abstract Maxwell equations. The formal theory of this system proves to be very similar to that of classical Maxwell's equations. The paper focuses on boundary value problems for the abstract Maxwell equations, especially on the Cauchy problem.

Abstract:Metric components of potentials of admissible electromagnetic fields in spaces with simply transitive four-parameter motion group are found. The components of frame vectors corresponding to the components of the metric tensors found by Petrov are given. The results obtained complement the coordinate-free classification given by Magazev et al. Previously, admissible electromagnetic fields were found for the case when three- and four-parameter groups of motions act on hypersurfaces of spacetime. Thus, non-equivalent sets of potentials for all electromagnetic fields that admit three- and four-parameter groups of motions are known now.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider homogeneous polynomial solutions for the classical Maxwell equations in a time-space domain with time variable t<t_0 , where t_0 is an arbitrary constant. The technique is motivated by the study of the so-called generalized Maxwell operators, which are constructed as conformally invariant differential operators in the framework of Clifford analysis. We firstly show that solutions of the classical Maxwell equations are equivalent to null solutions of the generalized Maxwell operator, then a direct decomposition and a partially orthogonal polynomial basis for the space of homogeneous polynomial null solutions of the generalized Maxwell operator are provided. At the end, a basis of homogeneous polynomial solutions for the source-free Maxwell equations on a bounded time-space domain is given.

Abstract:In curved spacetime, Maxwell's equations can be expressed in forms valid in Minkowski background, with the effect of the metric (gravity) appearing as effective polarizations and magnetizations. The electric and magnetic (EM) fields depend on the observer's frame four-vector. We derive Maxwell's equations valid in general curved spacetime using the fields defined in the normal frame, the coordinate frame, and two other non-covariant methods used in the literature. By analyzing the case in the generic frame we show that the EM fields, as well as the charge and current densities, defined in non-covariant ways do not correspond to physical ones measured by an observer. We show that modification of the homogeneous part is inevitable to any observer, and such a modification is difficult to interpret as the effective medium property. The normal frame is the relevant one to use as it gives the EM fields measured by an Eulerian observer.

Abstract:The paper proposes three basic postulates, to introduce the octonion space into the field theory, and then to describe simultaneously the physical features of the electromagnetic field and of the gravitational field in the curved octonion space. From the conceptions of the orthogonality, connection, and parallel transport in the curved octonion space, it is able to yield the octonion metric coefficient, connection coefficient, and curvature. The decomposition of the gravitational source's definition deduces the gravitational field equations in the curved space, while the disassembling of the electromagnetic source's definition produces the electromagnetic field equations in the curved space. The result reveals that the connection coefficient and curvature in the curved octonion space will direct impact the electromagnetic field equations, gravitational field equations, and their physical features.

Abstract:The energy--momentum tensor and the tensor continuity equation serve as the conservation laws of energy, linear momentum, and angular momentum for a continuous flow. Previously, we derived equations of motion for macroscopic electromagnetic fields in a homogeneous linear dielectric medium that is draped with a gradient-index antireflection coating (J. Math Phys. 55, 042901 (2014) ). These results are consistent with the electromagnetic tensor continuity equation in the limit that reflections and the accompanying surface forces are negligible thereby satisfying the condition of an unimpeded flow in a thermodynamically closed system. Here, we take the next step and derive equations of motion for the macroscopic fields in the limiting case of a piecewise-homogeneous simple linear dielectric medium. The presence of radiation surface forces on the interface between two different homogeneous linear materials means that the energy--momentum formalism must be modified to treat separate homogeneous media in which the fields are connected by boundary conditions at the interfaces. We demonstrate the explicit separation of the total momentum into a field component and a material motion component, we derive the radiation pressure that transfers momentum from the field to the material, we derive the electromagnetic continuity equations for a piecewise homogeneous dielectric, and we provide a lucid reinterpretation of the Jones and Richards experiment.

Abstract:The electromagnetic theory is considered in the framework of the generally covariant approach, that is applied to the analysis of electromagnetism in noninertial coordinate and frame systems. The special-relat\-ivistic formulation of Maxwell's electrodynamics arises in the flat Minkowski spacetime when the general coordinate transformations are restricted to a class of transformations preserving the Minkowski line element. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the electromagnetism in the noninertial rotating reference system. For the latter case, the general stationary solution of the Maxwell equations in the absence of the electric current is constructed in terms of the two scalar functions satisfying the Poisson and the biharmonic equations with an arbitrary charge density as a matter source. The classic problem of Schiff is critically revisited.

Abstract:The kinetic description of relativistic plasmas in the presence of time-varying and spatially non-uniform electromagnetic fields is a fundamental theoretical issue both in astrophysics and plasma physics. This refers, in particular, to the treatment of collisionless and strongly-magnetized plasmas in the presence of intense radiation sources. In this paper the problem is investigated in the framework of a covariant gyrokinetic treatment for Vlasov-Maxwell equilibria. The existence of a new class of kinetic equilibria is pointed out, which occur for spatially-symmetric systems. These equilibria are shown to exist in the presence of non-uniform background EM fields and curved space-time. In the non-relativistic limit this feature permits the determination of kinetic equilibria even for plasmas in which particle energy is not conserved due to the occurrence of explicitly time-dependent EM fields. Finally, absolute stability criteria are established which apply in the case of infinitesimal symmetric perturbations that can be either externally or internally produced.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we put forth a general scheme for defining initial value problems from Einstein's equations of General Relativity constrained by homogeneous and isotropic expansion. The cosmological models arising as solutions are naturally interpreted as spatially homogeneous and isotropic on ``large scales". In order to show the well-posedness and applicability of such a scheme, we specialize in a class of spacetimes filled with the general homogeneous perfect fluid and inhomogeneous viscoelastic matter. We prove the existence, uniqueness, and relative stability of solutions, and an additional inequality for the energy density. As a consequence of our theorems, a new mechanism of energy transfer appears involving the different components of matter. A class of exact solutions is also obtained to exemplify the general results.

Abstract:Possibility of flat-band ferromagnetism in quantum dot arrays is theoretically discussed. By using a quantum dot as a building block, quantum dot superlattices are possible. We consider dot arrays on Lieb and kagome lattices known to exhibit flat band ferromagnetism. By performing an exact diagonalization of the Hubbard Hamiltonian, we calculate the energy difference between the ferromagnetic ground state and the paramagnetic excited state, and discuss the stability of the ferromagnetism against the second nearest neighbor transfer. We calculate the dot-size dependence of the energy difference in a dot model and estimate the transition temperature of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition which is found to be accessible within the present fabrication technology. We point out advantages of semiconductor ferromagnets and suggest other interesting possibilities of electronic properties in quantum dot superlattices.

Abstract:We study massless solutions to the Einstein equations coupled to different matter models with a magnetic field and a conformal gauge singularity assuming spatial homogeneity with three commuting spatial translations. We show that there are no solutions in the case that the matter model is a radiation fluid. If the matter is described via kinetic theory we obtain that there exist unique solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system and the Einstein-Boltzmann system for a certain range of soft potentials. For both the Vlasov and the Boltzmann case we also obtain asymptotic expansions close to the initial conformal gauge singularity.

Abstract:Formulations of initial-boundary value problems for the system of Maxwell's equations in various quasi-stationary approximations in homogeneous and inhomogeneous conducting media are considered. In the case of weakly inhomogeneous media, asymptotic expansions of solutions to the considered initial-boundary value problems in a parameter characterizing the degree of inhomogeneity of the medium are formulated and substantiated. It is shown that the construction of an asymptotic expansion for the quasi-stationary electromagnetic approximation leads to successively solving independent problems for the quasi-stationary electric and quasi-stationary magnetic approximations in a homogeneous medium. Conditions for the initial data providing the convergence of the asymptotic series are given.
