Abstract:After re-stating why beauty physics is so special and sketching its present status I attempt to map out an itinerary for the next fifteen years. The basic elements are listed for a research program that allows to define and probe the KM unitarity triangle in a manner where the numerical uncertainties are reduced to the few percent level. Dedicated experiments at the LHC will be essential in exploiting the discovery guarantee in beauty physics to the fullest. This paper is dedicated to Prof. H. Kastrup on the occasion of his 60th birthday. I have spent five years at his institute at the RWTH Aachen and I truly enjoyed the stimulating atmosphere he created by encouraging intellectual exchange unimpeded by hierarchical privileges.

Abstract:This white paper reports on the discussions of the 2018 Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) topical program "From bound states to the continuum: Connecting bound state calculations with scattering and reaction theory". One of the biggest and most important frontiers in nuclear theory today is to construct better and stronger bridges between bound state calculations and calculations in the continuum, especially scattering and reaction theory, as well as teasing out the influence of the continuum on states near threshold. This is particularly challenging as many-body structure calculations typically use a bound state basis, while reaction calculations more commonly utilize few-body continuum approaches. The many-body bound state and few-body continuum methods use different language and emphasize different properties. To build better foundations for these bridges, we present an overview of several bound state and continuum methods and, where possible, point to current and possible future connections.

Abstract:This short note describes the long collaborative effort between Arizona and Kraków, showing some of the key strangeness signatures of quark-gluon plasma. It further presents an annotated catalog of foundational questions defining the research frontiers which I believe can be addressed in the foreseeable future in the context of relativistic heavy ion collision experiments. The list includes topics that are specific to the field, and ventures towards the known-to-be-unknown that may have a better chance with ions as compared to elementary interactions.

Abstract:In order to celebrate this double birthday the journal Foundations of Physics publishes a topical collection `Pilot-wave and beyond' on the developments that have followed the pioneering works of Louis de Broglie and David Bohm on quantum foundations. This topical collection includes contributions from physicists and philosophers debating around the world about the scientific legacy of Bohm and de Broglie concerning the interpretation and understanding of quantum mechanics. In these forewords we give a general review of the historical context explaining how de Broglie and Bohm developed their interpretations of quantum mechanics. We further analyze the relationship between these two great thinkers and emphasize the role of several collaborators and continuators of their ontological approach to physics.

Abstract:The LHCb experiment is in operation since 2009 and has provided measurements of the KM matrix with unprecedented precision. 50 years after the original paper we are in the position of pinning down the parameters of the theory, or possibly to show its limitations. In these proceedings the status of LHCb is shown in a historical perspective, along with some anecdotes.

Abstract:These proceedings provide a brief overview of the status of $B$ meson physics, putting particular emphasis on precision tests of the Standard Model with meson mixing data, and on the anomalies in charged- and neutral-current semileptonic $B$ decays. Abstract:The bulk of this paper centers around the tension between confinement and freedom in QCD. I discuss how it can be understood heuristically as a manifestation of self-adhesive glue and how it fits within the larger contexts of energy-time uncertainty and $\textit{real virtuality}$. I discuss the possible emergence of $\textit{treeons}$ as a tangible ingredient of (at least) pure gluon $SU(3)$. I propose $\textit{flux channeling}$ as a method to address that and allied questions about triality flux numerically, and indicate how to implement it for electric and magnetic flux in material systems. That bulk is framed with broad-stroke, necessarily selective sketches of the past and possible future of strong interaction physics. At the end, I've added an expression of gratitude for my formative experience at the Erice school, in 1973.

Primordial black holes and gravitational memory

Abstract:We discuss the various ways in which primordial black holes may have formed in the early Universe and how the effects of such black holes can be used to place constraints on cosmological models. We show that such constraints may be severely modified if the value of the gravitational "constant" G varies with cosmological epoch, a possibility which arises in many scenarios for the early Universe. The nature of the modification depends upon whether the value of G near a black hole maintains the value it had at its formation epoch (corresponding to gravitational memory) or whether it tracks the background cosmological value. This is still uncertain but we discuss various approaches which might help to resolve the issue.

Abstract:In 1980 Leon Lederman started Saturday Morning Physics with a handful of volunteer physicists, around 300 students and all the physics teachers who tagged along. Today Fermilab offers over 30 programs annually with help from 250 staff volunteers and 50 educators, and serves around 40,000 students and 2,500 teachers. Find out why we bother. Over the years we have learned to take advantage of opportunities and confront challenges to offer effective programs for teachers and students alike. We offer research experiences for secondary school teachers and high school students. We collaborate with educators to design and run programs that meet their needs and interests. Popular school programs include classroom presentations, experience-based field trips, and high school tours. Through our work in QuarkNet and I2U2, we make real particle physics data available to high school students in datadriven activities as well as masterclasses and e-Labs. Our professional development activities include a Teacher Resource Center and workshops where teachers participate in authentic learning experiences as their students would. We offer informal classes for kids and host events where children and adults enjoy the world of science. Our website hosts a wealth of online resources. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation and Fermilab Friends for Science Education, our programs reach out across Illinois, throughout the United States and even around the world. We will review the program portfolio and share comments from the volunteers and participants.

Abstract:We are emerging from a period of consolidation in particle physics. Its great, historic achievement was to establish the Theory of Matter. This Theory will serve as our description of ordinary matter under ordinary conditions -- allowing for an extremely liberal definition of "ordinary -- for the foreseeable future. Yet there are many indications, ranging from the numerical to the semi-mystical, that a new fertile period lies before us. We will discover compelling evidence for the unification of fundamental forces and for new quantum dimensions (low-energy supersymmetry). We will identify new forms of matter, which dominate the mass density of the Universe. We will achieve much better fundamental understanding of the behavior of matter in extreme astrophysical and cosmological environments. Lying beyond these expectations, we can identify deep questions that seem to call for ideas outside our present grasp. And there's still plenty of room for surprises.

A Half-Century Research Footpath in Statistical Physics

Abstract:We give an abridged account of a continued string of studies in condensed matter physics and in complex systems that span five decades. We provide links to access abstracts and full texts of a selected list of publications. The studies were carried out within a framework of methods and models, some developed in situ, of stochastic processes, statistical mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. The topics, techniques and outcomes reflect evolving interests of the community but also show a particular character that privileges the use of analogies or unusual viewpoints that unite the studies in distinctive ways. The studies have been grouped into thirty sets and these, in turn, placed into three collections according to the main underlying approach: stochastic processes, density functional theory, and nonlinear dynamics. We discuss the body of knowledge created by these research lines in relation to theoretical foundations and spread of subjects. We indicate unsuspected connections underlying different aspects of these investigations and also point out both natural and unanticipated perspectives for future developments. Finally, we refer to our most important and recent contribution: An answer with a firm basis to the long standing question about the limit of validity of ordinary statistical mechanics and the pertinence of Tsallis statistics.

Abstract:As 2005, the International Year of Physics, comes to an end, two physicists working primarily in geophysical research reflect on how geophysics is not an applied physics. Although geophysics has certainly benefited from progress in physics and sometimes emulated the reductionist program of mainstream physics, it has also educated the physics community about some of the generic behaviors of strongly nonlinear systems. Dramatic examples are the insights we have gained into the ``emergent'' phenomena of chaos, cascading instabilities, turbulence, self-organization, fractal structure, power-law variability, anomalous scaling, threshold dynamics, creep, fracture, and so on. In all of these examples, relatively simple models have been able to explain the recurring features of apparently very complex signals and fields. It appears that the future of the intricate relation between physics and geophysics will be as exciting as its past has been characterized by a mutual fascination. Physics departments in our universities should capitalize on this trend to attract and retain young talent motivated to address problems that really matter for the future of the planet. A pressing topic with huge impact on populations and that is challenging enough for both physics and geophysics communities to work together like never before is the understanding and prediction of extreme events.
