Abstract:The direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (DSHP) from hydrogen and oxygen is a green synthesis method with a high atomic economy. However, H2O2 selectivity and productivity remain a key challenge, the OO bonds are easily broken with supported Pd catalysts to produce water. Herein, we report the synthesis of bimetallic catalyst PdSn@Pd@HCS by adapting reversed-phase micellar and galvanic replacement reaction. The novel bimetallic yolk-shell structure catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance, the selectivity and productivity of H2O2 reaching 98% and 4899 mmol/gPd· h − 1, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that the presence of Sn inside the bimetallic alloy can enhance the ligand effect and optimize the electronic structure of the surface Pd atoms, weakening the adsorption ability of O2 molecules and inhibiting the dissociation of OO bonded species, resulting in the enhancement of H2O2 selectivity and productivity. This work provides the groundwork for bimetallic yolk-shell structure catalysts to achieve the efficient synthesis of H2O2.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) has the wide range of applications in industry and living life. However, the development of the efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the direct H 2 O 2 synthesis (DHS) from H 2 and O 2 remains a formidable challenge because of the low H 2 O 2 producibility. Herein, we develop a two-step approach to prepare PdSn nanowire catalysts, which comprises Pd oxide layered on PdSn nanowires (Pd L /PdSn-NW). The Pd L /PdSn-NW displays superior reactivity in the DHS at zero Celcius, presenting the H 2 O 2 producibility of 528 mol kg cat −1 ·h −1 and H 2 O 2 selectivity of >95%. A layer of Pd oxide on the PdSn nanowire generates bi-coordinated Pd, leading to the different adsorption behaviors of O 2 , H 2 and H 2 O 2 on the Pd L /PdSn-NW. Furthermore, the weak adsorption of H 2 O 2 on the Pd L /PdSn-NW contributes to the low activation energy and high H 2 O 2 producibility. This surface engineering approach, depositing metal layer on metal nanowires, provides a new insight in the rational designing of efficient catalyst for DHS.

Abstract:Direct synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2 still faces the dilemma of low selectivity and productivity due to the O-O bond dissociation. To expedite the resolution of this issue, we introduce a core-shell structured catalyst Co@Pd/ TiO2 with a compressed-strain Pd shell. The Co@Pd/TiO2 catalyst demonstrates a superior H2O2 productivity of 6.95 x 103 mmol center dot gPd-1 center dot h- 1 and H2O2 selectivity of 98.1 %, with enhancements of over 192 % and 139 %, respectively, when compared to Pd/TiO2. The construction of the compressed-strain Pd shell on the Co@Pd/TiO2 catalyst induces a winder width (wd) and a lower center (epsilon d) of the Pd d-band, allowing the Co@Pd/TiO2 catalyst to achieve the following benefits for improving H2O2 selectivity and productivity: (1) Reducing the degree of electron back-donation to O2* (* denotes adsorbed state, the same below), thus inhibiting the cleavage of the O-O bond in O2*; (2) Showing a weaker Pd-O bond strength, which stabilizes the OOH* species and suppresses the breakage of the O-O bond therein; (3) Weakening the interaction between the catalyst and chemical substances, thereby restraining H2O2 degradation.

Abstract:Direct H2O2 synthesis (DHS) from H2 and O2 is a promising process in industry; however, challenges related to poor H2O2 selectivity and low H2O2 yield remain. We report here that Pd x Pb nanorings (NRs) can serve as high-efficiency catalysts for DHS. We demonstrate that the preferential location of Pb species at the edge and corner can significantly decrease the amount of low-coordinated Pd atoms in Pd x Pb NRs, leading to an enhanced H2O2 yield and selectivity but a reduced degradation rate. Consequently, the optimized catalyst gives a H2O2 yield of 170.1 mol kgcat –1 h–1, being one of the best catalysts reported for DHS to the best of our knowledge. Theoretical calculations reveal that Pd x Pb NRs are favorable for *OOH formation, a key intermediate for DHS, while Pd NRs tend to dissociate O2 to form H2O in the presence of H2. On the other hand, the cleavage of O–O in H2O2 is strongly suppressed on Pd x Pb NRs, leading to a low H2O2 degradation rate. This work highlights the significance of catalyst surface modifications, especially the control of Pd coordination environment on DHS performance, which may provide deep insight for catalyst design in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of the most valuable clean energy sources with a rapidly growing requirement in industry and daily life. The direct synthesis of H2O2 from hydrogen and oxygen is considered to be an economical and environmentally friendly manufacturing route to replace the traditional anthraquinone method, although it remains a formidable challenge owing to low H2O2 selectivity and production. Here, we report a catalyst consisting of Pd(111) nanocrystals on TiO2 modified with single Pt atoms (Pt1Pd(111)/TiO2), which displays outstanding reactivity, producing 1921.3 μmol of H2O2, a H2 conversion of 62.2% and H2O2 selectivity of 80.3% over 30 min. Kinetic and isotope experiments confirm that the extraordinary catalytic properties are due to stronger H2 activation (the rate-determining step). DFT calculations confirm that Pt1Pd(111) exhibits lower energy barriers for H2 dissociation and two-step O2 hydrogenation, but higher energy barriers for side reactions than Pt1Pd(100), demonstrating clear facet dependence and resulting in greater selectivity and amount of H2O2 produced.

Abstract:The electrochemical direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is significant but still challenging because of the lack of highly selective and active catalysts. Here, we report the synthesis of hollow nanospheres constructed by atomically dispersing platinum in amorphous CuSx support (h-Pt-1-CuSx) with a high concentration of single atomic Pt sites (24.8 at%), and this catalyst can consistently reduce O-2 into H2O2 with selectivity of 92%-96% over a wide potential range of 0.05-0.7 V versus RHE in HClO4 electrolyte. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy confirmed the atomically isolated form of Pt with a low valance of +0.75. An electrochemical device that can synthesize H2O2 directly from H-2 and O-2 is fabricated with H2O2 productivity as high as 546 +/- 30 mol kg(cat)(-1) h(-1). The well-defined and high-concentration single atomic Pt sites result in ultrahigh productivity of H2O2.

Abstract:Pd particles were successfully embedded into meospores formated by nanosheet layersPd/NS-25 with higher content of B acid sites exhibited a highest formate rate of H2O2.Metal-support interaction between Pd nanoparticles and acid sites enhanced selectivity for H2O2.Pd/NS-50 gave high activity 3.2 times than that of Pd/CZ-50.Direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (DSHP) was studied over Pd loaded on HZSM-5 nanosheets (Pd/ZN). Pd nanoparticles with average size of ca. 4.3 nm were introduced into the adjacent nanosheet layers (thickness of ca. 2.9 nm) by impregnation method. Pd/ZN with theoretical Si/Al molar ratio of 25 showed highest selectivity for H2O2 among the prepared catalysts, together with highest formation rate of H2O2 (38.0 mmol gcat-1 h-1), 1.9 times than that of Pd supported on conventional HZSM-5 zeolite (Pd/CZ-50). Better catalytic performance of nanosheet catalysts was attributed to the promoted Pd dispersion which promoted H2 dissociation, more Brønsted acid sites and stronger metal-support interaction which inhibited the dissociation of O-O bond in H2O2. Abstract:Highlights • A mono-disperse, size-uniform and nitrogen-doped porous carbon sphere (NPCS) with high specific surface area and hierarchical pore structure was prepared by a one-pot activation method. • The high-performance Pd/NPCS catalysts were rapidly synthesized using the ultrasonic-assisted-microwave quick synthesis method. • Adjusting the amount of H 2 PdCl 4 allowed for the modulation of the surface Pd 0 /Pd 2+ ratio of the Pd/NPCS catalysts. When the H 2 PdCl 4 addition amount was 0.3 ml, the Pd 0.3 /NPCS catalyst exhibited a high hydrogen peroxide productivity of 219 mol H2O2 ·kg cat -1 ·h -1 . Directly synthesizing H 2 O 2 from H 2 and O 2 at atmospheric pressure requires a highly efficient Pd catalyst, which poses a challenge for reasonable design and simple synthesis of Pd catalyst. In this study, a series of Pd/NPCS catalysts were synthesized by various methods with mono-disperse, uniform-size and N-doped porous carbon sphere named NPCS as the support and PdCl 2 as the palladium precursor. The results indicated that the ultrasonic-assisted-microwave quick synthesis method significantly reduced the synthesis time of Pd catalyst. The Pd nanoparticles obtained via this method were well-distributed on the NPCS support, with a smaller particle size, a narrower particle size distribution range, and more exposed Pd active sites, which leading to improved H 2 O 2 generation rate compared to traditional preparation methods. Additionally, N-doped, high specific surface area, and abundant mixed micro-mesoporous pore structure of NPCS support improved the transfer and diffusion performance of Pd/NPCS catalysts, facilitating the adsorption of reactants and desorption of H 2 O 2 from Pd active sites, and effectively inhibited hydrogenation and decomposition side reactions caused by the breaking of the O-O bond. The ultrasonic-assisted-microwave quick synthesis method and excellent NPCS support synergistically improved the catalytic activity and stability of Pd/NPCS catalyst. These findings provide insight into the design and preparation of efficient Pd catalysts for directly synthesizing H 2 O 2 at atmospheric pressure. Strong Metal-Support Interaction Boosts Activity, Selectivity, and Stability in Electrosynthesis of H2O2

Abstract:Noble metals have an irreplaceable role in catalyzing electrochemical reactions. However, large overpotential and poor long-term stability still prohibit their usage in many reactions (e.g., oxygen evolution/reduction). With regard to the low natural abundance, the improvement of their overall electrocatalytic performance (activity, selectivity, and stability) was urgently necessary. Herein, strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) was modulated through an unprecedented time-dependent mechanical milling method on Pd-loaded oxygenated TiC electrocatalysts. The encapsulation of Pd surfaces with reduced TiO2-x overlayers is precisely controlled by the mechanical milling time. This encapsulation induced a valence band restructuring and lowered the d-band center of surface Pd atoms. For hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis through the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), these electronic and geometric modifications resulted in optimal adsorption energies of reaction intermediates. Thus, SMSI phenomena not only enhanced electrocatalytic activity and selectivity but also created an encapsulating oxide overlayer that protected the Pd species, increasing its long-term stability. This SMSI induced by mechanical milling was also extended to other noble metal systems, showing great promise for the large-scale production of highly stable and tunable electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical synthesis of H 2 O 2 through a selective two-electron (2e − ) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an attractive alternative to the industrial anthraquinone oxidation method, as it allows decentralized H 2 O 2 production. Herein, we report that the synergistic interaction between partially oxidized palladium (Pd δ+ ) and oxygen-functionalized carbon can promote 2e − ORR in acidic electrolytes. An electrocatalyst synthesized by solution deposition of amorphous Pd δ+ clusters (Pd 3 δ+ and Pd 4 δ+ ) onto mildly oxidized carbon nanotubes (Pd δ+ -OCNT) shows nearly 100% selectivity toward H 2 O 2 and a positive shift of ORR onset potential by ~320 mV compared with the OCNT substrate. A high mass activity (1.946 A mg −1 at 0.45 V) of Pd δ+ -OCNT is achieved. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure characterization and density functional theory calculations suggest that the interaction between Pd clusters and the nearby oxygen-containing functional groups is key for the high selectivity and activity for 2e − ORR.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have recently attracted broad scientific interests due to their unique structural feature, the single-atom dispersion. Optimized electronic structure as well as high stability are required for single-atom catalysts to enable efficient electrochemical production of H2O2. Herein, we report a facile synthesis method that stabilizes atomic Pd species on the reduced graphene oxide/N-doped carbon hollow carbon nanospheres (Pd1/N-C). Pd1/N-C exhibited remarkable electrochemical H2O2 production rate with high faradaic efficiency, reaching 80%. The single-atom structure and its high H2O2 production were maintained even after 10,000 cycle stability test. The existence of single-atom Pd as well as its coordination with N species is responsible for its high activity, selectivity, and stability. The N coordination number and substrate doping around Pd atoms are found to be critical for an optimized adsorption energy of intermediate *OOH, resulting in efficient electrochemical H2O2 production.

Abstract:Pd/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method and were used for the direct formation of hydrogen peroxide from H-2 and O-2. The H2O2 concentration and selectivity were strongly dependent on the solubility of hydrogen in the reaction medium. The modification of the support by halogenate has a beneficial effect on the selectivity. The state of the active Pd on Pd/Al2O3 catalysts was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Pd(0) was found to be active.

Abstract:Single atom alloy catalysts offer possibilities to obtain turnover frequencies and selectivities unattainable by their monometallic counterparts. One example is direct formation of H2O2 from O2 and H2 over Pd embedded in Au hosts. Here, a first-principles-based kinetic Monte Carlo approach is developed to investigate the catalytic performance of Pd embedded in Au nanoparticles in an aqueous solution. The simulations reveal an efficient site separation where Pd monomers act as active centers for H2 dissociation, whereas H2O2 is formed over undercoordinated Au sites. After dissociation, atomic H may undergo an exothermic redox reaction, forming a hydronium ion in the solution and a negative charge on the surface. H2O2 is preferably formed from reactions between dissolved H+ and oxygen species on the Au surface. The simulations show that tuning the nanoparticle composition and reaction conditions can enhance the selectivity toward H2O2. The outlined approach is general and applicable for a range of different hydrogenation reactions over single atom alloy nanoparticles.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an effective green oxidant, which is used in many industrial processes. Here, the reaction mechanism for direct formation of H2O2 from H2 and O2 over Pd catalysts is studied using density functional theory calculations and mean-field kinetic modeling. The state of the catalyst as a function of reaction conditions is determined from ab initio thermodynamics. It is found that Pd is in a hydride phase during typical reaction conditions. Reaction landscapes are constructed for the reaction over PdH(111) and PdH(211). Formation of H2O2 instead of H2O requires that O2 adsorbs and that the surface intermediates O2, OOH, and H2O2 do not dissociate. We find that these requirements are fulfilled on the stepped PdH(211) surface. Surface steps are needed for O2 chemisorption as the adsorption on PdH(111) is endothermic. The high H coverage on the surface of the hydride is important to slow down the unwanted scission of the O–O bond and promote the desorption of the products. Comparative calculations for the Pd(111) surface show that this surface is inactive for both H2O2 and H2O formation below room temperature for typical reaction mixtures. Our findings demonstrate the importance of surface steps and high hydrogen coverage for direct synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2 over Pd catalysts. The results imply that the selectivity of the reaction toward H2O2 is enhanced by a high partial pressure of H2, which is in agreement with experimental observations.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Creative approaches for designing heterostructures that consist of different dimensional components are necessary for achieving highly efficient catalytic materials. Here, we report an in situ supersaturation-triggered growth of vertically aligned 2D CoFeP nanosheet/1D Fe-CoP nanowire (2D/1D CoFeP NW) heterostructures with open hierarchical architecture. The integrating 1D nanowires and 2D nanosheets and well-defined 2D–1D interfacial coupling possess enhanced charge transfer, more active sites, and favorable kinetics during electrolysis, resulting in superb electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water splitting. Specifically, CoFeP NW heterostructures are efficient OER catalysts in alkaline solution with an overpotential of 250 mV at 30 mA cm−2, outperforming most reported non-noble metal phosphide electrocatalysts. This work provides a facile and scalable strategy to design non-noble metal catalysts with multifunctionality and high activity.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, precious metal/ tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) composite particles in which palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) were loaded on WO 3 particles were synthesized via the ultrasonic reduction method. The surface observation of the synthesized composite materials was performed and their photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation was evaluated from the decomposition rate of methylene blue in aqueous solution. From the TEM image, it was found that the Pd/WO 3 composite particles synthesized by the ultrasonic reduction method had a structure in which Pd nanoparticles were supported on WO 3 particles. The photocatalytic performance of Pd/WO 3 and Pt/WO 3 increased with increasing contents of Pd and Pt. When synthesizing Pd(0.5 wt%)/WO 3 particles by ultrasonic reduction method, the photocatalytic activity was improved by feeding Pd equivalent to 0.17 wt% per feed three times at regular time intervals, rather than by feeding 0.5 wt% of Pd at a time.

Abstract:In this issue of Chem Catalysis, Huang and co-workers have pre-pared Pd single atoms on C3N4 (Pd1/C3N4) and Pd single-atom al-loys on a SnO2 (Pd1/SnO2) multi-site catalyst (Pd1/SnO2&C3N4). The synergy between the Pd single atom and Pd single-atom alloy boosted the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (DSHP) via H2 and O2.

Abstract:Engineering the interfacial structure between noble metals and oxides, particularly on the surface of non-reducible oxides, is a challenging yet promising approach to enhancing the performance of heterogeneous catalysts. The interface site can alter the electronic and d-band structure of the metal sites, facilitating the transition of energy levels between the reacting molecules and promoting the reaction to proceed in a favorable direction. Herein, we created an active Pd-Si interface with tunable electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) by growing a thin permeable silica layer on a non-reducible oxide ZSM-5 surface (termed Pd@ SiO2/ZSM-5). Our experimental results, combined with density functional theory calculations, revealed that the Pd-Si active interface enhanced the charge transfer from deposited Si to Pd, generating an electron-enriched Pd surface, which significantly lowered the activation barriers for O(2 )and H2O. The resulting reactive oxygen species, including O-2-, O-2(2-), and -OH, synergistically facilitated formaldehyde oxidation. Additionally, moderate electronic metal-support interaction can promote the catalytic cycle of Pd-0 ? Pd2+, which is favorable for the adsorption and activation of reactants. This study provides a promising strategy for the design of high-performance noble metal catalysts for practical applications.
