Abstract:We report the first record of a Bengal Tiger, Panthera tigris tigris , in eastern Nepal in 2020 based on photographic evidence. We documented this evidence at 3,165 m a.s.l., which makes it the highest elevation record of a tiger in Nepal. We recorded this evidence in one of 46 trail cameras deployed for monitoring Red Pandas in the Panchthar-Ilam-Taplejung (PIT) area. The PIT area, which has non-protected status, borders India in the east. Our finding supports the importance of transboundary conservation, which will benefit local and flagship wildlife in the PIT area.

Abstract:One live and another dead Yellow-bellied Weasel were spotted at an altitude of 2,190m and 3,078m, respectively, in Lamsung, Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, Myagdi and Barekot Rural Municipality, Jajarkot on 1 May 2016 and 16 June 2016 in the afternoon. This is probably the first record of the species with photographs in Myagdi District of Gandaki Province, and in Jajarkot District of Karnali Province, western Nepal.

Abstract:This article aims to assess the distribution, threats and perceptions regarding otters in Shuklaphanta National Park (SNP). It also provides an overview of the conservation efforts of the Nepal government within and outside the protected areas. The study was carried out through preliminary survey of the wetlands using direct sighting techniques, plus indirect evidence including fur, spraints, dead remains, pugmarks, transect survey, key informant survey (n= 15), and questionnaire survey of households (n= 70) in buffer zone. This study found that otter signs were mostly concentrated in the moist soil near the wetlands area. Otter distribution was mostly recorded in Radhapur river, Kalikhich lake, Chaudhar river, Hattinala near hattisar area of pipraiya, Bahuni river, Shikari lake, and Salgaudi lake of Shuklaphanta National Park. Fire and extraction of construction materials from wetlands were identified as severe threats through social survey and key informant survey. For the maintenance of viable population of otters these threats should be minimized through effective biodiversity conservation techniques such as awareness programs and enforcement of laws inside the park. In recent decades, the populations have declined as a consequence of hunting and the overall loss of natural habitats. Overall, our study shows that information on the status, distribution and population trends of Smooth-coated Otters is limited. Therefore, we recommend that more studies should be carried out in this region to establish status, distribution and ecology to improve our understanding of otters in the face of increasing impacts on their habitats. In addition, it is mandatory for the implementation of conservation activities such as awareness to the locals and policy makers, appropriate habitat management and initiating scientific research to ensure a minimum viable population of the species in the country.
First sighting of a sloth bear in a decade in Shuklaphanta National Park, Nepal

Abstract:Sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) are listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of threatened species with a global population estimate of <17,000 individuals. In southwestern Nepal, Shuklaphanta National Park includes the largest uninterrupted expanse of grassland in the region and provides suitable habitat for sloth bears. No records of sloth bears from Shuklaphanta National Park, however, have been reported since 2013. We present the first photographic evidence of a sloth bear in Shuklaphanta National Park in a decade. In addition, we observed a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) at the same location as the sloth bear 5 days later. These observations highlight the need for further research into the occurrence and movements of sloth bears in this region as well as the extent of co-occupancy and types of interactions between sloth bears and tigers.

Abstract:The three-striped roofed ( Batagur dhongoka ) is a semi-aquatic turtle that belongs to family Geoemydidae. Due to anthropogenic pressure, it has been facing an intense decline of over 80% in its distribution range in the past 50 years. It is considered as 'Critically Endangered' so effective conservation strategies are needed to protect the species by determining their genetic diversity and population genetic structure. This study investigates the genetic diversity, population structure and demographic pattern of B. dhongoka from two Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre established near Ganga river using mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cyt b : 1140 bp) ; control region (CR: 451 bp) and ten nuclear microsatellite loci. mtDNA results show low levels of nucleotide diversity (π = 0.0022) in B. dhongoka haplotypes and provide evidence for a low substitution rate. The demographic pattern estimated by the Bayesian skyline plot (BSP) analysis indicates historical stability followed by growth in the effective population size, with a recent reduction in population size from ~ 2 thousand years ago. The microsatellite findings show a moderate level of observed heterozygosity (Ho: 0.49). Bayesian-based clustering analysis revealed weak genetic structures in B. dhongoka and presence of admixed assignations suggesting close genetic relationships. These findings shed light on B. dhongoka's genetic status and underline the necessity of comprehensive rehabilitation and relocation programs and conservation and management techniques to ensure the species' long-term survival. In order to ensure the effective protection and conservation of B. dhongoka , the Government of India has taken a proactive measure by incorporating it into Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, as amended in 2022.

Abstract:The endangered hispid hare (Caprolagus hispidus) is one of the least studied mammal species. The recent rediscovery of hispid hare in Chitwan National Park (CNP) after three decades, necessitated urgent conservation measures. A detailed investigation into the species' ecology is imperative for developing evidence-based conservation strategies to support these efforts. The main objective of this study is to investigate the current distribution pattern and habitat preferences, offering vital insights for the effective preservation and management of the species and its habitat. Between 28 January and 13 February 2023, fifty-two surveys using strip transects were carried out in the potential areas. If any indirect signs of the presence of the hispid hare were identified, the corresponding value is coded as 1 "used plot". In contrast, a value of 0 was assigned if there is an absence of any indirect signs "habitat availability plot". Nine habitat predictors (habitat type, ground cover, distance to water source, distance to roads/path/firelines, ground condition, dominant plant species, presence/absence of (anthropogenic disturbance, predators, and invasive species), were measured from both plot types ("used plot" and "habitat availability plot"). Our research indicates a clumped distribution pattern within the CNP, with the Sukhibhar grassland identified as a key hotspot. Our study reveals the hispid hare's adaptability to diverse grassland conditions, favoring both tall and short grasslands. It is essential to integrate the species' preference for various grassland habitats and critical water sources to enhance conservation strategies. This requires a comprehensive grassland management plan for Chitwan National Park that preserves habitat diversity, safeguards key water sources, and adapts to evolving environmental conditions.

Abstract:The gharial Gavialis gangeticus is a Critically Endangered crocodilian currently known from only 14 disjunct locations in Nepal and India. The protected stretch of the Babai River in Bardia National Park, Nepal, is home to one of the six subpopulations of gharials that have exhibited recent evidence of reproduction. However, there is limited information available on the gharial population in this region. We conducted surveys during the breeding, nesting and hatching seasons of gharials during 2020–2022 to study the gharial population in the Babai River in Bardia National Park. We located one breeding group of gharials in Soth Khola (2–3 individuals) and one in Dhanuse (5–6 individuals), and we observed pre-mating or mating behaviours in all 3 years. We identified potential nesting areas on sand banks of 19–175 m in length. During nesting seasons we found abundant signs of nesting only in Dhanuse, including entry and exit trails of female gharials to and from the water and trial nests. In 2020 and 2021 we did not find any signs of hatching, probably because of flooding. In 2022 we recorded two gharial nests, producing c. 60 hatchlings, in Dhanuse. Our findings indicate that the gharial population in the Babai River is probably nesting annually. We recommend various conservation actions for this gharial population.

Notes on the Courtship and Captive Reproduction of the Southern Vietnam Box Turtle, Cuora picturata, at the Turtle Conservation Center in Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam

Abstract:Endemic to only three known provinces in South Central Vietnam, Cuora picturata have faced extensive collection pressures for the food, medicinal, and pet trades. Further exacerbating their decline is the lack of protected areas where wild populations exist, with only one known population occurring within a protected area. With threats to wild populations persisting, the development of an assurance colony has been prioritized for C. picturata. The Asian Turtle Program of Indo-Myanmar Conservation has been operating the Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park since 1998. From 2020 to 2022, 24 C. picturata were acquired by the TCC from the illegal trade. With no ideal repatriation plan, these animals provided an opportunity for developing a captive assurance colony at the TCC to safeguard the species from extinction. As semi-aquatic species, box turtles in the genus Cuora are a unique group that shows variations in habitat use and behavior between species. Herein, we documented some specific courtship behaviors not yet described for C. picturata, providing insight into the unique reproductive behaviors of this species.
First photographic record of the snow leopard Panthera uncia in Kishtwar High Altitude National Park, Jammu and Kashmir, India

Abstract:The snow leopard Panthera uncia is categorized as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is the least well-known of the large felids because of its shy and elusive nature and the inaccessible terrain it inhabits across the mountains of Central and South Asia. We report the first photographic record of the snow leopard in Kishtwar High Altitude National Park, India. During our camera-trapping surveys, conducted using a grid-based design, we obtained eight photographs of snow leopards, the first at 3,280 m altitude on 19 September 2022 and subsequent photographs over 3,004–3,878 m altitude. We identified at least four different individuals, establishing the species' occurrence in Kiyar, Nanth and Renai catchments, with a capture rate of 0.123 ± SE 0.072 captures/100 trap-nights. We also recorded the presence of snow leopard prey species, including the Siberian ibex Capra sibirica, Himalayan musk deer Moschus leucogaster, long-tailed marmot Marmota caudata and pika Ochotona sp., identifying the area as potential snow leopard habitat. Given the location of Kishtwar High Altitude National Park, this record is significant for the overall snow leopard conservation landscape in India. We recommend a comprehensive study across the Kishtwar landscape to assess the occupancy, abundance, demography and movement patterns of the snow leopard and its prey. In addition, interactions between the snow leopard and pastoral communities should be assessed to understand the challenges facing the conservation and management of this important high-altitude region.

Abstract:The Critically Endangered Cantor's giant softshell turtle Pelochelys cantorii is a freshwater turtle found in South and Southeast Asia. Its population is declining because of habitat destruction and alteration, and hunting for its meat. Data on the species' ecology, behaviour, population size, distribution and threats are limited, and previous surveys undertaken in India have failed to detect individuals in the wild. This lack of data hinders strategic conservation planning. Ecologists and conservationists increasingly utilize local ecological knowledge to determine the status and gain insights into the ecology of threatened and rare species that are difficult to detect in field studies. To examine the historical and current occurrence of Cantor's giant softshell turtle, we conducted community interviews along the Chandragiri River in Kerala, India. With data from these interviews, we identified multiple sites where the species continues to occur. Older respondents and those that used the river for fishing and irrigation were more likely to report sightings of the species. Our findings also improved knowledge about the turtles' seasonal and diel activity patterns. A network of key informants identified through the interviews provided information on turtle bycatch, sightings and nesting. This network is being utilized for the continued monitoring of the species and could help in devising evidence-based management strategies for softshell turtles in India. These methods can also be adopted more widely for other threatened species of freshwater turtles globally.

Abstract:The Wattle-necked softshell turtle Palea steindachneri is poorly understood in its natural habitat, despite being highly productive in farms and commonly observed in the turtle trade. Field observations conducted in Vietnam's Pu Mat National Park represent the inaugural instance of direct, in-the-wild natural history documentation for the species within its native habitat. In contrast, prior research relied on interview data gathered from local communities. The species was found in slow-moving water in a sandy stream, consistent with previous information from community interview data. The limited range and its frequent appearance in the food and traditional medicine trade have led to the species’ classification as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List. Abstract:This brief note presents the first photographic record of the butterfly ray, Gymnura cf. poecilura, from the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River in West Bengal, eastern India. The photographs were discovered during a pilot survey of riverine elasmobranchs in West Bengal. This record is an important contribution to the knowledge of elasmobranch biodiversity in Indian rivers. The author suggests that further research is needed to better understand the ecology, biology and conservation status of riverine elasmobranchs in India.

Abstract:Being one of the megadiverse countries, India experiences a diverse climate and topography which encourages a wide variety of lifeforms including algae in different fresh to saline water environments. During exploration, a total of six cryptomonads species belonging to 2 orders, 2 families and 3 genera were recorded from the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary located in the North Eastern part of India, of which five species were reported for the first time from India. The taxonomic description as well as the artificial key of each of the recorded species and their distribution around the globe were also presented. The species recorded for the first time from India were Komma caudata (L. Geitler) D.R.A. Hill 1991, Chroomonas nordstedtii Hansgirg 1885, C. marssonii Skuja 1948, C. ovata Ehrenberg 1832 and C. platyuris Skuja 1948.

Diversity of mammalian species in the Kangchenjunga Landscape of eastern Nepal

Abstract:The Himalayas, including Nepal, are a biodiversity hotspot. However, records on mammalian richness remain incomplete due to resource limitations, inadequate training, and the remote location of study areas. The unprotected forest area of the Panchthar-Ilam-Taplejung region in eastern Nepal is a vital corridor connecting India and Nepal. Using a structured methodology we aimed to increase our knowledge of mammalian diversity in this area. Camera traps were deployed throughout the Panchthar-Ilam-Taplejung area in 53 locations in winter and 54 in spring, accumulating 3014 camera trap days and generating 93,336 images, with a positive trigger rate of 29.8%. The survey revealed 17 species of medium to large-sized mammals and an additional six species of smaller unidentified mammals, including two melanic variations and two previously undocumented species. Activity patterns were calculated for species with more than five image records in both seasons. The findings contribute essential information about the Kangchenjunga Landscape, which can be used to further conservation efforts in this critical ecosystem corridor.

Abstract:Phyllognathia ceratophthalma was originally documented in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in Japan, by Balss in 1913. Subsequently, it was recorded in the Maldives within the Indian Ocean, thus broadening its known habitat range. This current study marks its first observation from the Indian coast and a sighting from the Indian Ocean after a span of 105 years, indicating its range extension to the west coast of India. A pair of spiny tiger shrimps were discovered in association with hard coral ( Porites sp.) from the lower intertidal zone of the Sikka reef, Gujarat. This study illustrates the morphology of the species and provides information about its distribution and habitat ecology.

Abstract:The recent literature documented many sightings of Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus in some states of India excluding Jammu & Kashmir. Here we report the first record of the species in the Wular Lake, located in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, India. During the routine birding, the Horned Grebes were sighted and documented. The head, beak, plumage colour pattern, and longish neck were used to identify the bird. This finding will be a new member to the bird checklist of Jammu & Kashmir.

Abstract:We report the first record of the grand leaf-nosed bat, Hipposideros grandis , from a cave in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. We confirmed its identity using morphometric and molecular analyses. This study enhances the number of national bat fauna and underscores the importance of comprehensive bat surveys in Bangladesh.

Abstract:Approximately 450–550 critically endangered soft-shell turtles locally known as Bostami turtle (Nilssonia nigricans) are confined in a freshwater reservoir (earthen pond) of 5663.24 m2 (84.4 m × 67.1 m) at a shrine in Chattogram, Bangladesh. The shrine is visited by many people and feed these turtles for religious purposes. These turtles are remained half-buried in the mud during the day and also floating, taking rest and feeding in this single pond. A survey was conducted with the shrine authority, visitors as well as observed management protocol to understand the status of Bostami turtle. Their nesting season extends from February to May. The median clutch size was 16.5 (range 16–30). The incubation period was varied from 80–90 days and the successful hatching rate was significantly low (P = 0.03) and gradually decreased from 13.1% to 7.14% in 2008 to 2010. Limited cruising area, eggs predation, overcrowding, lack of proper nesting ground, lack of proper hatching and management facilities are the major threats for this critically endangered fresh water turtle. A poor management could potentially bring health risk and inbreeding depression in the population. All sorts of biological activities in a single pond for an endangered species could potentially bring disaster and appropriate management protocol should be followed. Thus, a standard management protocol of soft-shell turtle has been developed in this study for proper management of Bostami turtle.

Abstract:The population of the Indian Skimmer ( Rynchops albicollis ) has declined sharply due to the habitat distraction by different anthropogenic disturbances, and consequently, this species has recently been categorised as endangered. The article presents the first photographic record about the presence of two individuals of the Indian Skimmer in the Ganga valley in district Haridwar, Uttarakhand, Himalayan foothills during March 2023.Continuous monitoring of the breeding and wintering populations of this endangered species is, therefore, needed in different parts of the Indian subcontinent.

Abstract:Management and conservation of highly trafficked species suffer from a lack of baseline data on their status in the wild. This study provides insights into the historical drivers shaping contemporary genetic variation in the world's most trafficked turtle, the Indian star tortoise (IST), Geochelone elegans . We employed an integrative approach combining two mtDNA regions, six polymorphic microsatellites , and morphometry to characterize wild ISTs covering the entire range of the species. Contrary to expectations and despite decades of illegal poaching and unscientific release, the results reveal two major clusters in the Indian subcontinent: a relatively invariable northwestern group (Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat, Malwa plateau and Aravali in Rajasthan) and a highly diverse southern group (Eastern ghats, Deccan plateau, Nilgiri hills, Coromandel coast, and Sri Lanka). Contradicting most previous studies, the species exhibits high genetic diversity, especially the southern group, a genetic hotspot with multiple sub-clusters inhabiting a widely reported poaching hotspot. The two deeply divergent groups (northwestern and southern) split around 2 Ma during Pleistocene and should be considered separate subspecies (northwestern Geochelone elegans stellata and southern Geochelone elegans elegans ). Reconstruction of historical demography suggests a stable historical population with a recent declining trend over last 100–120 years. Our study presents a comprehensive reference database that can be used for scientific release and rehabilitation of seizures and guide effective management and conservation. Integrating genetic intelligence into management of highly trafficked species will aid in shifting current adhocism towards evidence-based conservation, leveraging the species' biological traits and natural genetic variation.
