Abstract:Groundwater recharge zones play a significant role in maintaining groundwater supply sustainability and preventing aquifer degradation. Nevertheless, the recharge mechanism in multilayer aquifers remains poorly understood because of the complexity of hydrogeological systems. This study aimed to clarify this process through integrated hydrogeochemical and isotopic analyses in the Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin (GWB), Indonesia. For this purpose, 42 groundwater samples were collected for hydrogeochemical and stable isotope (δ 18 O and δ 2 H) analyses from the upper and lower aquifers during the two sampling campaigns. The results showed that the isotopic composition of water was influenced by the local topographic effects of Mount Merapi, as waters tend to become gradually depleted in heavy isotopes with increasing elevation. Results suggest that the effective recharge zones for the Merapi aquifer system were located at elevations of 453–1473 m above sea level (masl). Groundwater originating from the upper aquifer showed a dominant Ca–Mg–HCO 3 facies and evolved towards mixed Ca–Na–HCO 3 , mixed Ca–Mg–Cl, and Na–Cl–SO 4 facies in the lower aquifer. Groundwater evolution along the flow path was also influenced by water–rock interaction processes, such as silicate weathering of aquifer minerals. The results led to an improved understanding of the hydrogeochemical evolution in the groundwater flow system and facilitated the development of a conceptual hydrogeological model of the studied basin. This study has successfully identified the processes of groundwater recharge and hydrogeochemical evolution, which could serve as a basis for further scientific and management discussions in implementing groundwater conservation policies.
