Abstract:The paper introduces a fully discrete quasi-Lagrangian finite element method for a monolithic formulation of a fluid-porous structure interaction problem. The method is second order in time and allows a standard $P_2-P_1$ (Taylor--Hood) finite element spaces for fluid problems in both fluid and porous domains. The performance of the method is illustrated on a series of numerical experiments.

Abstract:The wave problem of finite element solution of one dimensional stationary convection diffusion equation is analyzed. The reason for wave is the poor continuity of linear Lagrange shape function. By using exponential function based interpolation (EFBI), the results of finite element solution are compared with that of the analytical solution. The results indicate that EFBI is effective to deal with the problem of numerical wave. The shape function of three dimensional EFBI is derived and analyzed. Morphological analysis shows that EFBI has good differentiability and adaptability.

Abstract:Based on the fundamental principle of discrete element method and the theory of deformable bodies,the displacement,strain and stress model of seam were proposed,and the control equations of discrete system for plane elastic problem and its iteration solve program are then established.According to the seam displacement,all kinds of boundary condition can be introduced and the nodal displacement can also be calculated easily.Comparing with the results of finite element method with the same mesh,the accuracy of displacement and stress given by the discrete element method of the paper is higher.

Abstract:After 30 years of development, the discrete element method (DEM) has developed to be a kind of numerical method of particle systems widely used in process engineering. In particular, the CFD-DEM coupling method has been widely used in the researches of fluidization. The DEM models are reviewed firstly, including the basic principles of DEM model, the particle shape model, the contact force model, the non-contact force model, and the fluid force model. Then the CFD-DEM coupling methods and the applications to fluidization are introduced, including the applications in fluidized bed, pneumatic conveying, and some other fields of process engineering. Finally, the future development of DEM and CFD-DEM coupling methods are presented, hoping to promote the development of DEM and its applications in process engineering.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the recent progress in theoretical bases, numerical algorithms and applications of the discrete element method (DEM). A more general definition for the DEM is made, by considering the key point of the model and its distinctions from the other numerical algorithms. The relationship between the DEM and the other algorithms, such as RBSM (Rigid Body Spring Model), DDA(Discontinuous Deformation Analysis), MD(Molecular Dynamics), DM2 (Discrete Meso-element Dynamic Method), MM(Meshless Method), is explained. The future research topics and development tendency of the DEM are discussed.

Abstract:The discrete element method (DEM) has attractive features for problems with severe damages, but lack of theoretical basis for continua behavior especially for nonlinear behavior has seriously restricted its application. The present study proposes a new approach to developing the DEM as a general and robust technique for modeling the elastoplastic behavior of solid materials. New types of connective links between elements are proposed, the inter-element parameters are theoretically determined based on the principle of energy equivalence and a yield criterion and a flow rule for DEM are given for describing nonlinear behavior of materials. Moreover, a numerical scheme, which can be applied to modeling the behavior of a continuum as well as the transformation from a continuum to a discontinuum, is obtained by introducing a fracture criterion and a contact model into the DEM. The elastoplastic stress wave propagations and the tensile failure process of a steel plate are simulated, and the numerical results agree well with those obtained from the finite element method (FEM) and corresponding experiment, and thus the accuracy and efficiency of the DEM scheme are demonstrated.

Abstract:A new method based on the principle of minimum potential energy is presented, aiming to overcome some weakness of the present discrete element method (DEM). Our primary research is to put forward the DEM with a tight theory base and a fit technique for treating continuum dynamic problems. By using this method, we can not only extend the existing seven-disc model, but also establish a new nine-disc model in a general way. Moreover, the equivalences of two kinds of models have been verified. In addition, three numerical examples of stress wave propagation problems are given in order to validate accuracy and efficiency of the present DEM models and their algorithms. Finally, the dynamic stress concentration problem of a square plate with a circular hole is analyzed.

Abstract:Based on the principle of discrete element method for plane elasticity problem,a posteriori error estimator which depending on the displacement of seam and a mesh adaptive strategy for discrete element method were presented.Compared with finite element method,the mesh adaptation for discrete element method has some advantages,such as the principle is simple,the adaptive mesh has no irregular node or distorted element.The numerical results of two examples showed that the proposed mesh adaptive strategy can give proper adaptive meshes to describe the characters of stress centralization and boundary condition.The results agreed well with that obtained by adaptive finite element method.

Abstract:The concurrent coupling of finite elements and discrete elements is an effective DOF reduction methodology for reproducing the granular flow phenomenon as discrete element method does. In this paper, we present a novel coupling strategy named the generalized bridging domain method. This method introduces independent functions to weight the material properties of the continuum and those of the discrete element model, and then the equilibrium of each new model is guaranteed by imposing compensation forces. The compensation force of continuum is determined by force and displacement compatibility requirements of continuum with respect to discrete elements, and vice versa. Utilizing different weighting functions, four typical coupling methods, the bridging domain method, edge-to-edge coupling, separate domain coupling, and separate edge coupling, are obtained. Additionally, a new integration algorithm with multiple time steps is developed for the separate edge coupling. The numerical performance of the separate domain coupling, where displacement compatibility condition of continuum and that of discrete elements are individually enforced by the Lagrange multiplier method, has been investigated in detail. Results of several numerical examples show that the separate domain coupling outperforms other methods in avoiding spurious reflection and the separate edge coupling is effective enough for coupling finite elements with discrete elements. Due to the truncation of high frequency waves, there exists energy loss but at an acceptable level if the waves can be resolved by the macroscopic finite element model.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to give a review on the newest developments of high-performance finite element methods (FEMs), and exhibit the recent contributions achieved by the authors' group, especially showing some breakthroughs against inherent difficulties existing in the traditional FEM for a long time. Design/methodology/approach Three kinds of new FEMs are emphasized and introduced, including the hybrid stress-function element method, the hybrid displacement-function element method for Mindlin-Reissner plate and the improved unsymmetric FEM. The distinguished feature of these three methods is that they all apply the fundamental analytical solutions of elasticity expressed in different coordinates as their trial functions. Findings The new FEMs show advantages from both analytical and numerical approaches. All the models exhibit outstanding capacity for resisting various severe mesh distortions, and even perform well when other models cannot work. Some difficulties in the history of FEM are also broken through, such as the limitations defined by MacNeal's theorem and the edge-effect problems of Mindlin-Reissner plate. Originality/value These contributions possess high value for solving the difficulties in engineering computations, and promote the progress of FEM.

Abstract:In this article, a fully discrete finite element method is considered for the viscoelastic fluid motion equations arising in the two-dimensional Old royd model. A finite element method is proposed for the spatial discretization and the time discretization is based on the backward Eulerscheme. Moreover, the stability and optimal error estimates in the L2-and H1-norms for the velocity and L2-norm for the pressure are derived for all time t>0. Finally, some numerical experiments are shown to verify the theoretical predictions.
Multiscale algorithm of time and space by coupling discrete element method and finite element method based on element/mesh momentum transfer

Abstract:A multiscale numerical model of time and space by coupling DEM (discrete element method) and FEM (finite element method) was established. The multiscale numerical model accomplished multiscale time and multiscale space calculations at the same time. Based on the element/mesh momentum transfer,the transition algorithm of mechanical and dynamic parametric variables was deduced. The transition algorithm achieved reasonable information exchange in the coupling transition zone between DEM and FEM,which theoretically solved the smooth transition problem of the physical and the mechanical characteristics between DEM zone and FEM zone in the multiscale computation of time and space. Through an example of elastic stress-wave propagation through a slender rod,the high accuracy and computation efficiency of the multiscale numerical method of time and space were validated.

Multiscale Modeling and Simulation

Abstract:To introduce the finite volume method to electronic structure calculations, we study a symmetric finite volume scheme for a class of linear eigenvalue problems and present a priori error analysis of the finite volume eigenpair approximations. Based on finite volume-finite element coupled discretizations, in particular, we design several higher order approximate schemes. We also demonstrate a series of numerical experiments in electronic structure calculations that illustrate the effectiveness of our finite volume discretization approaches.

Abstract:Interactions between continuums and granular materials are common phenomenon in engineering applications, and in numerical simulation the coupling of the finite element method and discrete element method may be the best method. In this study, a sophisticated algorithm of sphere-facet contact algorithm is developed for the interaction between finite element method domain and discrete element method domain. Base on the coupling algorithm, a coupling engine of two open source computer codes is developed, where YADE for the discrete element method and OOFEM for finite element method. Two classical verification problems are used to explore issues encountered when coupled finite-discrete element method, namely, the efficiency of the engine, the influence of the element size and the mechanical parameters of the contacting interfaces. All the numerical results indicated that coupling finite-discrete element method developed in this study can better descript the interaction between the solid and the granular material.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:The classical finite element method has been successfully applied to many engineering problems but not for the cases with space discontinuity. In our previous work, a peridynamics-based finite element method was presented according to the principle of minimum potential energy, which enables discontinuity. As a continuation of the previous work, on the one hand, we derive the peridynamics-based finite element formulation from a new perspective, i.e., the principle of virtual work. On the other hand, we propose an adaptive continuous/discrete element conversion technique, thus the cracks could be described explicitly without increasing the computational cost significantly. Finally, numerical results are executed to verify the proposed method, including the computational cost, the influence of discretization strategy and critical stretch on crack paths, and the comparison of predicted crack paths with experimental results. Numerical results show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

A discrete-continuum multiscale method for geomechanics

Abstract:This paper presents a general multiscale method for coupling discrete and continuum approaches. Discrete approach has been shown to be particular suitable for capturing physical phenomena at small length scales where continuum mechanics description no longer applies. Its efficiency, however, is limited because of the computational power required. Hence, continuum approach is considered as the practical scale for modeling the majority of problems. A multi-domain analysis coupling discrete model and continuum model is proposed in this paper to reduce the computational cost and improve the accuracy, and a bridging scale term is introduced such that compatibility of dynamic behavior between the DEM-based and FDMbased models is enforced. This multiscale method couples two existing commercial packages: the DEM-based code PFC, and the FDM-based code, FLAC. The new method is applied to dynamic tensile test. Results show this proposed method does not result in spurious wave reflections and does not need additional filtering or damping in the overlapping domain between the FDM meshes and the DEM particles. In the bridging domain method [1], the total energy is taken as a linear combination of the FDM and DEM model energies. A scaling parameter  is introduced in the bridging subdomain (the overlapping domain). Fig.1 shows the multiscale model and Fig. 2 presents variations of  and 1   in the bridging subdomain.

Abstract:This paper presents a FEM with mesh-separation-based approximation technique that separates a standard element into three geometrically independent elements. A dual mapping scheme is introduced to couple them seamlessly and to derive the element approximation. The novel technique makes it very easy for mesh generation of problems with complex or solution-dependent, varying geometry. It offers a flexible way to construct displacement approximations and provides a unified framework for the FEM to enjoy some of the key advantages of the Hansbo and Hansbo method, the meshfree methods, the semi-analytical FEMs, and the smoothed FEM. For problems with evolving discontinuities, the method enables the devising of an efficient crack-tip adaptive mesh refinement strategy to improve the accuracy of crack-tip fields. Both the discontinuities due to intra-element cracking and the incompatibility due to hanging nodes resulted from the element refinement can be treated at the elemental level. The effectiveness and robustness of the present method are benchmarked with several numerical examples. The numerical results also demonstrate that a high precision integral scheme is critical to pass the crack patch test, and it is essential to apply local adaptive mesh refinement for low fracture energy problems. Finite Element Approximation of Finite Deformation Dislocation Mechanics

Abstract:We develop and demonstrate the first general computational tool for finite deformation static and dynamic dislocation mechanics. A finite element formulation of finite deformation (Mesoscale) Field Dislocation Mechanics theory is presented. The model is a minimal enhancement of classical crystal/$J_2$ plasticity that fundamentally accounts for polar/excess dislocations at the mesoscale. It has the ability to compute the static and dynamic finite deformation stress fields of arbitrary (evolving) dislocation distributions in finite bodies of arbitrary shape and elastic anisotropy under general boundary conditions. This capability is used to present a comparison of the static stress fields, at finite and small deformations, for screw and edge dislocations, revealing heretofore unexpected differences. The computational framework is verified against the sharply contrasting predictions of geometrically linear and nonlinear theories for the stress field of a spatially homogeneous dislocation distribution in the body, as well as against other exact results of the theory. Verification tests of the time-dependent numerics are also presented. Size effects in crystal and isotropic versions of the theory are shown to be a natural consequence of the model and are validated against available experimental data. With inertial effects incorporated, the development of an (asymmetric) propagating Mach cone is demonstrated in the finite deformation theory when a dislocation moves at speeds greater than the linear elastic shear wave speed of the material.

Abstract:In this paper we develop an abstract theory for stability and convergence of mixed discontinuous finite element methods for second-order partial differential problems. This theory is then applied to various examples, with an emphasis on different combinations of mixed finite element spaces. Elliptic, parabolic, and convection-dominated diffusion problems are considered. The examples include classical mixed finite element methods in the discontinuous setting, local discontinuous Galerkin methods, and their penalized (stablized) versions. For the convection-dominated diffusion problems, a characteristics-based approach is combined with the mixed discontinuous methods.
