Abstract:To manipulate the wave front of the harmonic wave, nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) have been employed in constructing nonlinear holography. Through designing a multi-channel chi(2) structure, nonlinear multiplexing holography is reported here in NPCs. We propose a multi-channel nonlinear holography in an orbital-angular-momentum- (OAM-)multiplexing NPC. In experiment, three images encoded in a single NPC are reconstructed in second-harmonic waves distinctively, when the necessary Fourier-domain OAM-matching conditions are met, respectively. Ourmethod not only conceptually extends nonlinear holography, but also provides a multifunctional platform for high-capacity security storage.

Here, we report the novel designs of 3D NPC structures for 3D dynamic holography and image processing at harmonic waves.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) have been widely used for studying nonlinear wave behaviors and in many applications requiring generation of light at new frequencies. In particular, the nonlinear photonic structures can be smartly designed to facilitate multiple functions in a single crystal. Here we show how to design a two-dimensional NPC to realize bottle-shaped second harmonic generation from a fundamental Gaussian beam with adjustable converging properties. The influences of structural parameters on the bottle beam generation are also investigated. These results are important for playing full potentials of NPCs and provide a convenient way to generate special beam at new frequencies with controllable properties.

Abstract:Nonlinear holography has recently emerged as a novel tool to reconstruct the encoded information at a new wavelength, which has important applications in optical display and optical encryption. However, this scheme still struggles with low conversion efficiency and ineffective multiplexing. In this work, we demonstrate a quasi-phase-matching (QPM) -division multiplexing holography in a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC). 3D NPC works as a nonlinear hologram, in which multiple images are distributed into different Ewald spheres in reciprocal space. The reciprocal vectors locating in a given Ewald sphere are capable of fulfilling the complete QPM conditions for the high-efficiency reconstruction of the target image at the second-harmonic (SH) wave. One can easily switch the reconstructed SH images by changing the QPM condition. The multiplexing capacity is scalable with the period number of 3D NPC. Our work provides a promising strategy to achieve highly efficient nonlinear multiplexing holography for high-security and high-density storage of optical information.
Second-harmonic Generation Via Double Topological Valley-Hall Kink Modes in All-Dielectric Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency band gaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, omega(0) and 2(omega 0), by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain wall interface between two PhCs placed together in a mirror-symmetric manner are generated within the two frequency band gaps. Importantly, through full-wave simulations and mode dispersion analysis, we demonstrate that tunable, bidirectional phase-matched SHG via nonlinear interaction of the valley-Hall kink modes inside the two band gaps can be achieved. In particular, by using Stokes parameters associated with the magnetic part of the valley-Hall kink modes, we introduce the concept of SHG directional dichroism, which is employed to characterize optical probes for sensing chiral molecules. Our work opens up avenues toward topologically protected nonlinear frequency mixing and active photonic devices implemented in all-dielectric material platforms.

Abstract:The femtosecond laser poling is optimized to allow writing deeper into the second‐order nonlinear crystals to support the fabrication of large‐scale 3D nonlinear photonic crystals. Accordingly, second harmonic generation is observed with efficiency more than four orders of magnitude higher than the previous. Realizations of such efficient nonlinear interactions can now open long‐awaited applications of these crystals in versatile fields. Nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) with spatially modulated second‐order nonlinear coefficients are indispensable in nonlinear optics and modern photonics. To access full degrees of freedom in the generation and control of coherent light at new frequencies, three dimensional (3D) NPCs have been recently fabricated employing the femtosecond laser writing technique in ferroelectric crystals. However, the nonlinear interaction efficiencies in 3D NPCs so far are rather low, which has been a major barrier to further development. Here, fabrication challenges of large‐scale 3D NPCs have been overcome to realize more than four orders of magnitude efficiency improvement over previously reported crystals. With the generation of second harmonic vortex beam as an example, the measured conversion efficiencies as high as 2.9 × 10−6 W−1 (femtosecond pulse‐pumped) and 1.2 × 10−5 W−1 (continuous‐wave‐pumped) are comparable with those in 1D or 2D NPCs. A general approach of structural simplification to relax fabrication challenge of truly complex 3D structures without sacrificing the predesigned functions is also presented. This realization of efficient nonlinear interactions in 3D NPCs paves the way for their novel applications in nonlinear photonics and quantum optics including nonlinear orbital angular momentum multiplexing and high‐dimensional entangled source.

Abstract:Nonlinear beam shaping can be dynamically controlled by temperature or polarization to form switchable nonlinear structured beams, which constitute an unprecedented system for realizing optical encryption at new frequencies and high-dimensional nonclassical light sources. However, previous works were limited by a trade-off between the conversion efficiency and the modulation dimension of the beam. It is still technologically challenging to achieve efficient and switchable multidimensional nonlinear beam shaping. Here, we demonstrate switchable generation of nonlinear structured beams via three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) fabricated by femtosecond laser writing technique with considerable conversion efficiency. The 3D NPCs contain different sequential 3D arrays of spatially modulated χ(2) nonlinearity designed by computer-generated hologram (CGH) along the optical y-axis (LiNbO3 crystal). The output direction of the nonlinear beams can be changed by the carrier frequencies, while their efficiencies can be increased by the quasi-phase matching condition.

Abstract:We investigate wavefront engineering of photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down conversion in lithium niobate-based nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs). Due to the complexity of domain structures, it is more convenient to describe photon interaction based on the nonlinear Huygens-Fresnel principle than conventional quasiphase matching regime. Analytical expressions are obtained to describe the transverse properties of down-converted photon states. The convenience of domain engineering in LiNbO3 crystals provides a potential platform for flexible wavefront manipulation of multiphoton states. The generation of N00N state with orbital angular momentum in a twisted NPC is studied utilizing this method. The obtained state is of great value in quantum cryptography, metrology, and lithography applications.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic crystals are microstructures with quadratic nonlinearity (chi((2))) that have been extensively used for the generation and control of coherent light at new frequencies. Thanks to the recent invention of 3D chi((2))-nonlinearity engineering techniques using femtosecond laser pulses, studies of intense light interaction with 3D nonlinear photonic crystals are now experimentally feasible. Here we review the latest research advances in nonlinear photonic crystals, focusing especially on the fabrication, characterization, and application of 3D structures. We also discuss the future development of 3D nonlinear photonic crystals with properties and functionalities that are either difficult or virtually impossible to achieve with lower dimensional structures. Abstract:Nonlinear beam shaping refers to spatial reconfiguration of a light beam at a new frequency, which can be achieved by using nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs). Direct nonlinear beam shaping has been achieved to convert second-harmonic waves into focusing spots, vortex beams, and diffraction-free beams. However, previous nonlinear beam shaping configurations in one-dimensional and two-dimensional (2D) NPCs generally suffer from low efficiency because of unfulfilled phase-matching condition. Here, we present efficient generations of second-harmonic vortex and Hermite-Gaussian beams in the recently-developed three-dimensional (3D) lithium niobate NPCs fabricated by using a femtosecond-laser-engineering technique. Since 3D χ(2) modulations can be designed to simultaneously fulfill the requirements of nonlinear wave-front shaping and quasi-phase-matching, the conversion efficiency is enhanced up to two orders of magnitude in a tens-of-microns-long 3D NPC in comparison to the 2D case. Efficient nonlinear beam shaping paves a way for its applications in optical communication, super-resolution imaging, high-dimensional entangled source, etc.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic crystals have been employed as computer-generated holograms to manipulate the wavefront of the nonlinear waves. However, the disadvantages of the binary-fabricated structures gradually appear because of their adverse effects on the manipulation quality, especially in the field of nonlinear shaping and imaging. A generalized encoding method has been proposed for constructing nonlinear holographic processes of high quality, which is called a quasi-multivalue-encoding method. Both theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that, compared with the conventional binary encoding method, this generalized encoding method is helpful to reduce the distortion and high-order diffraction effects. The integrated ability to convert the light frequency and to reshape its wavefront with a high resolution in any desired way can be very useful for all-optical shaping, switching, imaging, manipulating, and so on.

Abstract:Antisymmetric multimode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities (AM-NPCs) are proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Due to transverse symmetry-breaking of the antisymmetric multimode periodic waveguide, anti-crossing of the fundamental mode and 1st-order mode is realized and confirmed by band structure calculation. Two-mode filtering and reflection-free cavity filters based on this characteristic are demonstrated. Experimental results on silicon-on-insulator platform shows that broadband (> 100 nm) reflection suppression (< -10 dB) and high-Q (7 × 104) AM-NPCs can be achieved using existed design methodology and fabrication facility. We also explain resonance splitting of the measured transmission spectra and find resonance-enhanced mode-conversion phenomena in the AM-NPCs.

Abstract:Phononic crystals are artificial periodic structural composites. With the introduction of nonlinearity, nonlinear phononic crystals(NPCs) have shown some novel properties beyond their linear counterparts and thus attracted significant interest recently. Among these novel properties, the second harmonic characteristics have potential applications in the fields of acoustic frequency conversion, non-reciprocal propagation, and nondestructive testing. Therefore, how to accurately manipulate the second harmonic band structure is a main challenge for the design of NPCs. Traditional design methods are based on parametric analysis and continuous trials, leading to low design efficiency and poor performance. Here, we construct the convolutional neural networks(CNNs) and the generalized regression neural networks(GRNNs) to inversely design the physical and geometric parameters of NPCs using the information of harmonic transmission curves. The results show that the inverse design method based on neural networks is effective in designing the NPCs. In addition, the CNNs have better prediction accuracy while the GRNNs have a shorter training time. These methods also can be applied to the design of higher-order harmonic band structures. This work confirms the feasibility of neural networks for designing the NPCs efficiently according to target harmonic band structures and provides a useful reference for inverse design of metamaterials.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic crystals with a helical structure in the second-order nonlinear coefficient (χ(2)) are fabricated using infrared femtosecond laser poling in ferroelectric Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 crystals. The quasi-orbital angular momentum of the helical χ(2) structure can be imprinted on the interacting photons during nonlinear optical processes, allowing the topological charge of the generated photons at new frequencies to be controlled. Here we study the case of a double-helix nonlinear photonic structure for the generation of a second-harmonic vortex beam from a Gaussian pump beam without phase singularity. The conservation law for orbital angular momentum in the second-harmonic process is also verified, with the topological charge of the pump photons being fully compensated by the double-helix structure. The flexible control of light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) at new frequencies will find important applications in both classical and quantum photonics, such as nonlinear wavefront shaping and multidimensional entanglement of photons.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal vortices (STOVs) are a new, to the best of our knowledge, type of structured light in which the optical phase circulates in space-time. In this work, we propose to generate STOVs via second harmonic generation in lithium niobate nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) with a linearly chirped Gaussian pulse as the fundamental wave. The structural function of the NPC is derived by the inverse design method. Numerical simulations of the intensity and phase profiles of the generated second harmonic waves are performed with both the amplitude-phase-modulated and the simplified binary-phase-modulated NPCs. We anticipate our study will be valuable for the experimental generation and manipulation of STOVs in NPCs.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) has recently been realized in experiment, which provides a powerful platform for quantum-state engineering. Here, we propose a fork-grating 3D NPC scheme to manipulate orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) correlations of entangled two-photon pairs. The spiral spectra, bandwidths, and generation rates of counterpropagating and copropagating photon pairs are theoretically analyzed. Our results show that 3D NPC is of practical significance to generate high-dimensional OAM entanglement for quantum precision measurement, quantum computing, and quantum communication.
The Cu NQR Study of the Stripe Phase Local Structure in the Lanthanum Cuprates

Abstract:Using Cu NQR in Eu-doped La_{2- x}Sr_xCuO_4 we show the evidence of the pinned stripe phase for moderate doping at 1.3K. The pinned fraction increases by one order of magnitude near hole doping x=1/8. The NQR lineshape reveals three inequivalent Cu positions: i) sites in the charged stripe; ii) nonmagnetic sites outside the stripes; iii) sites with a magnetic moment of 0.29 Bohr magnethon in the AF correlated regions. A dramatic change of the NQR signal for x > 0.18 correlating with the onset of bulk superconductivity corresponds to the depinning of the stripe phase. .

Abstract:We propose and theoretically investigate two-photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) correlation through spontaneous parameter down-conversion (SPDC) processes in three-dimensional (3D) spiral nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs). By properly designing the NPC structure, one can feasibly modulate the OAM-correlated photon pair, which provides a potential platform to realize high-dimensional entanglement for quantum information processing and quantum communications.
