Abstract:The BSCS 5E Instructional Model, an elaboration of the well-known and accepted three-part learning cycle, is a five-part approach to incorporating inquiry-based, active learning in the classroom. Developed in 1987 by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, "the 5Es" is a popular K-20 instructional practice, and as such, the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study has advocated for the empirical study of its effectiveness. We present a systematic review of English-language peer-reviewed publications of empirical studies of the 5Es for K-20 mathematics and science teaching and learning. We report our search process and analyses, revealing the characteristics of the literature found that specifically question the effectiveness of the 5Es: 45 articles have been published, beginning in 2006, in 33 journals. Of those with scores available, the average SCImago Journal & Country Rank was 0.587, and the average Impact Factor was 1.151 for year of publication. From our synthesis, we find that the 5Es are more impactful than traditional instruction, yet comparisons of the 5Es to the original learning cycle predecessor have not been done, and the 5Es are not necessarily more effective than other inquiry methods. While dosage does not seem to matter in the studies in our corpus, the 5Es are particularly studied and found to be positively impactful in secondary biology contexts. The relatively few studies with teachers and students in mathematics contribute to both a nuanced understanding of some limitations of the rest of the data corpus and are areas for future research.

Abstract:Abstract Over 34 years since its conception, research in educational settings has found evidence for the effectiveness of the 5E Instructional Model. Indeed, several studies have reported evidence of a better conceptual understanding of scientific ideas and models, positive effects on general achievement in science, and positive attitudes toward science. In this commentary, we would like to put forward the principles from cognitive sciences on how people learn which may underlie the 5E Model and that could theoretically contribute to the model’s effectiveness as a learning sequence. Connections to conceptual change theory are especially highlighted.

Impact of computer modeling on learning and teaching systems thinking

Abstract:Researchers have found that computer modeling fosters the learning of causal mechanisms in systems, an important crosscutting concept in science that many novice learners find challenging. Despite the research that highlights the role of teacher's instructional practices in enacting computer tools, few studies have considered teachers' use of computer modeling and its implications for student learning in classroom interactions, compared to interactions without computer tools. In this study, we examine (a) the impact of computer modeling on students' understanding of causal links in decomposition and (b) classroom interactions with use of computer modeling. We employed a quasi‐experimental design with eight middle school science classes that served predominately Latinx students. The random treatment was at the class level (computer modeling; n = 60, four classes) and control (paper modeling; n = 59, four classes). Analyses incorporated student preassessment and postassessment, classroom observations, and audio‐recorded modeling instruction. Results indicate that compared to paper modeling, computer modeling enriched systems thinking, particularly students' ability to provide causally coherent statements in explaining scientific ideas and evidence. Enactment of computer modeling may be associated with a shift in classroom interactions to include more invitation for students' elaboration of causal systems. We discuss aspects of computer modeling that may foster systems thinking, with implications for the future design of tools and curricula.

The long-term effects of introducing the 5E model of instruction on students’ conceptual learning

Abstract:The effectiveness of the 5E model has been supported by research in schools in recent years, although its efficacy has rarely been assessed in the long term to avoid novelty effects and to consider the impact of the usual loss of fidelity that time entails. This study was designed to assess the long-term effects on students' conceptual learning as a consequence of an intervention that introduced the 5E model to their teachers five years earlier. Two questionnaires measuring the prevalence of alternative conceptions about the kinetic-molecular theory were performed over a five-year interval (pre-test in 2014 and post-test in 2019). 725 students participated, 371 in pre-test and 354 in post-test. In schools where the 5E model was introduced, statistically significant differences were observed in the percentage of correct answers between the pre- and post-test in both grades (p = 0.003 and 0.0028, respectively), with Cohen's d = 0.427 and 0.439, respectively, indicating a relevant effect size, while in control schools no statistically significant differences were reported in either grade. These results provide strong evidence regarding the long-term sustainability of interventions aiming to change teachers' practices in favor of active learning methods such as the 5E model and their positive effects on students' conceptual learning.

Abstract:The implementation of inquiry-based teaching is a major theme in national science education reform documents. Science for All Americans (Rutherford & Alhgren, 1990) and the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996). This research argue that inquiry needs to be a central strategy of all science curricula. Using a learning cycle approach in the classroom helps to facilitate inquiry practices because learning cycles focus on constructivist principles and emphasize the explanation and investigation of phenomena, the use of evidence to back up conclusions, and experimental design. Although there are several variations of learning cycles, the one that is highlighted in this research as a method to support inquiry-based teaching is the 5E Instructional Model (Bybee & Landes, 1990). The use of this model in several science education professional development programs is also addressed.

Abstract:Abstract Socio‐scientific issues (SSI) instruction positions the understanding and practice of science in the context of issues that are informed by science but require reasoning about their societal dimensions to respond to those issues effectively. For this reason, instruction in the context of SSI has been considered the gateway to contemporary visions of scientific literacy. SSI instruction is often framed in line with the Socio‐Scientific Issues Teaching and Learning (SSI‐TL) framework, which is prominent in the literature and well‐used by researchers to frame professional development but potentially less familiar to classroom teachers. Given that teachers are likely familiar with the 5E learning cycle, they might experience an easier transition to developing and facilitating SSI instruction using the SSI‐TL model if framed through a lens of 5E. In this article, we unpack the SSI‐TL model of instruction through a 5E lens, then provide an exemplary prototype of the new SSI‐TL infused 5E instruction in the context of a globally relevant SSI to highlight the overlap between engagement in essential science practices and socio‐scientific reasoning. We hope that teachers become more comfortable developing science literacy by addressing both science and societal dimensions of contemporary SSI by considering the SSI‐TL Framework through a 5E lens.

Abstract:Today's students face new challenges that demand high levels of intelligence and meta-thinking skills. Science-based educational pedagogies like STEM, 5E's, and discovery-based education have earned a strong reputation for nurturing children's reasoning and critical thinking skills. However, there's a need for them to be more open and conceptual in order to better prepare students for modern life's challenges. The realms of philosophical and scientific-based educational models currently dominate the educational arena. In retrospect, both models have inherent values that would benefit learners. It is beneficial to examine both methods to develop a teaching framework that fosters higher-order thinking, metacognition, and problem-solving skills. The objective of this paper is to delve into the essenceof the philosophy for children (P4C) method in comparison with the scientific method and their impact onstudents' learning. Using the six reasoning strands, I will systematically compare the two models for strengths and similarities. Throughout this comparison, I aim to maintain objectivity by by drawing on references and practical experience, avoiding any undue bias in favor of one model over the other. Subsequently, by applyingTrompenaars Hampden-Turner™ dilemmas reconciliation model, I will propose the Scie-losophy model, which represents reconciliation between the two methods for the benefit of the learner and the greater good of society. •Currently, philosophical, and scientific-based education models dominate the educational arena. Both models have inherent values that would benefit learners.•Adopting one approach above the other will yield less than optimal results. I strongly discourage following a saturated educational system in which one of the two methods is used exclusively.•I propose a model that represents reconciliation between the two methods for the benefit of the learner and the interest of society.

Abstract:Conceptual change can be a challenging process, particularly in science education where many of the concepts are complex, controversial, or counter-intuitive. Yet, conceptual change is fundamental to science learning, which suggests science educators and science education researchers need models to effectively address and investigate conceptual change. Consideration of the current research and extant models of conceptual change reflect a need for a holistic, comprehensive, and dynamic model of conceptual change. In response, we developed the Dynamic Model of Conceptual Change (DMCC), which uses multiple lines of research that explore the variables influencing conceptual change and the dynamic interactions that take place during the conceptual change process in science teaching and learning. Unique to the DMCC is the potential for iterations, regression, enter and exit points at various stages of the conceptual change process, and the influences of message recognition, message engagement and processing, and the nature of the resulting conceptual change. The DMCC contains elements from extant models along with previously un-emphasized influential conceptual change variables such as culture, society, attitude, practices, and personal epistemology. We constructed the DMCC to provide science educators and researchers a more holistic framework for exploring conceptual change in science instruction and learning.
Metamodeling Knowledge: Developing Students' Understanding of Scientific Modeling

Abstract:We argue that learning about the nature and utility of scientific models and engaging in the process of creating and testing models should be a central focus of science education. To realize this vision, we created and evaluated the Model-Enhanced ThinkerTools (METT) Curriculum, which is an inquiry-oriented physics curriculum for middle school students in which they learn about the nature of scientific models and engage in the process of modeling. Key components of our approach include enabling students to create computer models that express their own theories of force and motion, evaluate their models using criteria such as accuracy and plausibility, and engage in discussions about models and the process of modeling. Curricular trials in four science classes of an urban middle school indicate that this approach can facilitate a significant improvement in students' understanding of modeling. Further analyses revealed that the approach was particularly successful in clarifying and broadening students' understanding of the nature and purpose of models. The METT Curriculum also led to significant improvements in inquiry skills and physics knowledge. Comparisons of METT students' performance with that of prior ThinkerTools students suggest that the acquisition of metamodeling knowledge contributed to these gains. In particular, METT students wrote significantly better conclusions on the inquiry test and performed better on some of the far-transfer problems on the physics test. Finally, correlational results, including significant correlations of pretest modeling and inquiry scores with posttest physics scores, suggests that developing knowledge of modeling and inquiry transfers to the learning of science content within such a curriculum. Taken together, the findings suggest that an emphasis on model-based inquiry, accompanied by the development of metamodeling knowledge, can facilitate learning science content while also developing students' understanding of the scientific enterprise.

Abstract:Teaching primary science through inquiry offers a number of benefits including developing pupils' science skills, progressing thinking skills and personal capabilities, and making science relevant to children's everyday experience. Ensuring that pre-service teachers (PSTs) are fully confident and competent in teaching inquiry-based science (IBS) however presents a number of challenges to initial teacher educators as teaching through inquiry calls for a high level of competence in classroom practice and an understanding of science concepts and theory. Opportunities to observe or teach IBS lessons during school experience are often limited thereby preventing PSTs acquiring personal experience of planning, teaching and evaluating inquiry-based lessons. This paper presents a model for coteaching where PSTs, initially, teach alongside peers before progressing to teaching with in-service teachers. Feedback from PSTs' written and oral evaluations indicate that the model is effective at developing their confidence and competence at each stage of their learning journey. We propose a sociocultural interpretation suggesting that coteaching addresses the cognitive and affective needs of PSTs and point to the valuable contribution which coteaching offers to all phases of science teacher education.
Teaching Science Using Argumentation-Supported 5E-STEM, 5E-STEM, and Conventional Didactic Methods: Differences in the Learning Outcomes of Middle School Students

Abstract:5E-based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (5E-STEM) education is known to be one of the most used pedagogical models in STEM-oriented science courses for middle school students. However, the 5E model lacks a clear explanation of how STEM subjects are strongly linked in each of its operational "E". In this study, a novel approach was proposed with the use of the argumentation-supported 5E-STEM (A-5E-STEM) model in the science curriculum. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in learning achievements, learning motivation, learning interest, and higher-order thinking skills of middle school students between teaching science using A-5E-STEM, 5E-STEM, and conventional didactic methods. A semi-experimental study with post-test only non-equivalent groups design was used. A "Separating Mixtures" unit in the 6th grade Natural Science curriculum was designed with A-5E-STEM and 5E-STEM model orientation. The participants were three 6th grade classes with a total of one hundred and twenty students at a public middle school in Hanoi City, Vietnam. The first experimental group was taught science using the A-5E-STEM model, the second experimental group was taught science using the 5E-STEM model, and a control group was taught the science unit with conventional didactic methods. A post-test was used to collect data on learning achievement, and questionnaires were used to collect data on learning motivation, interest, and higher-order thinking skills of middle school students in the science curriculum. The findings showed that the effect of teaching science using the A-5E-STEM model on learning achievement, motivation, interest, and higher-order thinking skills of middle school students was significantly superior to that of the 5E-STEM model and conventional didactic methods. Therefore, science teachers are expected to increase the use of the A-5E-STEM model in their related curriculum.
Introducing an Instructional Model for Teaching Blended Math-Science Sensemaking in Undergraduate STEM Courses Using Computer Simulations

Abstract:The ability to express scientific concepts in mathematical terms and integrate scientific and mathematical reasoning about a phenomenon is a foundational cognitive process involved in scientific thinking. This process called blended math-science sensemaking (blended MSS) is a desired skill for all STEM students, but few students are learning it, and there is little research on how to teach it. In this work we introduce the development and testing of a novel instructional method for teaching blended (MSS) that is suitable for use in STEM courses in undergraduate and K-12 educational settings. This study builds on our past work on developing and validating a framework for characterizing in detail the cognitive levels involved in such sensemaking. This work uses the unique power of interactive simulations for assessing and developing blended MSS. We designed instructional activities to help students use blended MSS in the contexts of heat capacity and Coulombs law. The Heat Capacity activity was piloted in a freshmen Chemistry course and the Coulombs law activity was piloted in a freshmen Physics course. The results indicate that for students who came in with no knowledge of the relevant equation the activity supported the development of both the equation, and their understanding of the mathematical relationships of the equation. These results indicate that the teaching approach helps students engage in blended MSS at higher levels of cognitive complexity.

The efficacy of student-centered instruction in supporting science learning

Abstract:Transforming science learning through student-centered instruction that engages students in a variety of scientific practices is central to national science-teaching reform efforts. Our study employed a large-scale, randomized-cluster experimental design to compare the effects of student-centered and teacher-centered approaches on elementary school students' understanding of space-science concepts. Data included measures of student characteristics and learning and teacher characteristics and fidelity to the instructional approach. Results reveal that learning outcomes were higher for students enrolled in classrooms engaging in scientific practices through a student-centered approach; two moderators were identified. A statistical search for potential causal mechanisms for the observed outcomes uncovered two potential mediators: students' understanding of models and evidence and the self-efficacy of teachers.

Abstract:This monograph describes the origins of the learning cycle, related research, and ht)w future researcA might be conducted to further the %nderstanding of theories of instruction. A wide range of information is synthesized, producing a coherent framework for better understanding the theory of the learning cycle. The monograph identifies various models of the learning cycle, and focuses on a cycle consisting of exploration, term (concept) introduction, and concept application. Topics include: (I) a brief introduction to education goals in general and then to the more specific goals of science education; (2) the introduction of the learning cycle and the fundamental instructional method for teaching science to achieve these goals; (3) the historical origins of the learning cycle method; (4) attempts to provide a theoretical rationale for using the learning cycle method; (5) the nature of the learning cycle and types of learning cycles to show how their use leads to students' acquisition of scientific concepts and the development of creative and critical thinking skills; (6) a review of the empirical research; and (7) suggestions for future research. Appended are the procedures for five science activities that show the use of learning cycle.

Abstract:Amid calls for integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (iSTEM) in K–12 education, there is a pressing need to uncover productive methods of integration. Prior research has shown that increasing contextual linkages between science and mathematics is associated with student problem solving and conceptual understanding. However, few studies explicitly test the benefits of specific instructional mechanisms for fostering such linkages. We test the effect of students developing a modeled process mathematical equation of a scientific phenomenon. Links between mathematical variables and processes within the equation and fundamental entities and processes of the scientific phenomenon are embedded within the equation. These connections are made explicit as students participate in model development. Pre–post gains are tested in students from diverse high school classrooms studying inheritance. Students taught using this instructional approach are contrasted against students in matched classrooms implementing more traditional instruction (Study 1) or prior traditional instruction from the same teachers (Study 2). Students given modeled process instruction improved more in their ability to solve complex mathematical problems compared to traditionally instructed students. These modeled process students also show increased conceptual understanding of mathematically modeled processes. The observed effects are not due to differences in instructional time or teacher effects.

Abstract:The concept of lifelong learning is becoming increasingly important in contemporary educational research and development. Although the relationship between experience (practice) and knowledge (theory) is becoming an important aspect of the formal learning process, current instructional design models do not point to educational strategies that support learners in re- and de-contextualisation (both directions of Kolb's learning cycle). This article aims to provide more insight into the process of creating and redesigning experiential learning environments and to better understand the complex relationship that exists between the learning environments and experiential learning (considering underlying learning theories). We will present and discuss mARC (more Authentic, Reflective and Collaborative), a three-component instruction model with a set of instructional elements proved to facilitate the re- and de-contextualisation of knowledge. This article ends with practical guidelines for using the mARC model to support students in linking learning experience to academic knowledge development within higher education.
