Abstract:The present work proposes an actively mode-locked modulator-free optoelectronic oscillator (OEO), which is based on a directly modulated laser (DML) with no need for any electro-optic or electrical amplitude modulators. The conception is that the DML plays a triple role, that is, the laser source, the OEO modulator of the optical signal, and the active mode-locking modulator of the cavity loss. Meanwhile, a direct-current (DC) block is employed at the RF port of the DML, which acts as a differentiator besides isolating the DC component. An external modulating square wave can be converted to a series of spike pulses via the DC block and then applied on the DML, which empowers the DML as the active mode-locking module. By relating the external frequency with the free spectral range (FSR) of the OEO cavity in an integral multiple or a rational number multiple, the fundamental, the harmonic, and the rational number harmonic mode-locking can be realized. Accordingly, microwave pulse trains with flexibly tunable pulse repetition frequency (PRF) can be obtained. Notably, PRF-staggered pulses in one cavity period can be optically obtained. In the proof-of-concept experiment, microwave pulse trains with the tunable PRF are demonstrated by driving the actively mode-locked direct modulation OEO (AML-DM-OEO) under the fundamental mode-locking, the 2nd-order, 3rd-order, and 4th-order harmonic mode-locking, and the 5th-order rational number harmonic mode-locking states, respectively. The phase noise is better than -118 dBc/Hz@10 kHz for the single-tone signal at 10 GHz abstracted from the generated microwave pulses. Staggered pulses are successfully obtained with double-pulse, triple-pulse, and quadruple-pulse in one cavity period, respectively.
