Abstract:This paper reviews quantum spin squeezing, which characterizes the sensitivity of a state with respect to SU(2) rotations, and is significant for both entanglement detection and high-precision metrology. We first present various definitions of spin squeezing parameters, explain their origin and properties for typical states, and then discuss spin-squeezed states produced with nonlinear twisting Hamiltonians. Afterward, we explain pairwise correlations and entanglement in spin-squeezed states, as well as the relations between spin squeezing and quantum Fisher information, where the latter plays a central role in quantum metrology. We also review the applications of spin squeezing for detecting quantum chaos and quantum phase transitions, as well as the influence of decoherence on spin squeezing. Finally, we review several experimental realizations of spin squeezing, as well as their corresponding theoretical backgrounds, including: producing spin-squeezed states via particle collisions in Bose–Einstein condensates, transferring photon squeezing to atomic ensembles, and generating spin squeezing via quantum non-demolition measurements.

Abstract:We use a reservoir engineering technique based on two-tone driving to generate and stabilize a quantum squeezed state of a micron-scale mechanical oscillator in a microwave optomechanical system. Using an independent backaction-evading measurement to directly quantify the squeezing, we observe 4.7±0.9 dB of squeezing below the zero-point level surpassing the 3 dB limit of standard parametric squeezing techniques. Our measurements also reveal evidence for an additional mechanical parametric effect. The interplay between this effect and the optomechanical interaction enhances the amount of squeezing obtained in the experiment.

Abstract:According to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the precision of any physical quantity measurement is limited by quantum fluctuation in general, which leads to the so-called standard quantum limit (SQL). The SQL can be beaten by using squeezed light, hence enhancing the measurement accuracy. Squeezed light is a typical nonclassical light, it exhibits reduced noise in one quadrature component. Since Caves proposed the scheme of phase measurement enhancement with squeezing, squeezed light has been used to enhance measurement precision in many areas. This review focuses on the following four kinds of precision measurements based on squeezed light: the measurements of relative phase, small lateral displacement and tilt, magnetic field, and clock synchronization. For all of these measurements, vacuum squeezing has been used to enhance measurement precision, while the types of squeezing (squeezing angle, transverse mode, polarization etc.) are different. For phase measurement, quadrature squeezing is injected into the conventionally unused input port of Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) or Michelson interferometer (MI). For displacement or tilt measurement, a vacuum squeezing beam of a special transverse mode is coupled into an intense coherent beam, yielding a spatial-squeezed light whose transverse position or tilt angle noise is lower than that of a classical light beam. Based on the Faraday effect of polarization rotation, the magnetic field can be detected precisely. The precision can be increased further by using the polarization squeezing. The polarization squeezing can be generated by coupling two orthogonal polarized beams together, a coherent beam and a vacuum squeezed beam. Various polarization squeezing can be illustrated on the Poincaré sphere. Finally, in the clock synchronization based on the optical frequency comb, squeezed light can be used to enhance the time measurement precision. A theoretical scheme with multimode squeezing of supermode (a kind of mode describing the frequency mode of a pulse laser beam) is introduced. The squeezing has extensively been applied into the quantum precision measurements such as gravitational wave detection as well as biological measurement and will play a more important role in the near future.

Optimal squeezing for high-precision atom interferometers

Abstract:We show that squeezing is a crucial resource for interferometers based on the spatial separation of ultra-cold interacting matter. Atomic interactions lead to a general limitation for the precision of these atom interferometers, which can neither be surpassed by larger atom numbers nor by conventional phase or number squeezing. However, tailored squeezed states allow to overcome this sensitivity bound by anticipating the major detrimental effect that arises from the interactions. We envisage applications in future high-precision differential matter-wave interferometers, in particular gradiometers, e.g., for gravitational-wave detection.

Squeezing-induced quantum-enhanced multiphase estimation

Abstract:We investigate how squeezing techniques can improve the measurement precision in multiphase quantum metrology. While these methods are well-studied and effectively used in single-phase estimations, their usage in multiphase situations has yet to be examined. We fill this gap by investigating the mechanism of quantum enhancement in the multiphase scenarios. Our analysis provides theoretical and numerical insights into the optimal condition for achieving the quantum Cramer-Rao bound, helping us understand the potential and mechanism for quantum-enhanced multiphase estimations with squeezing. This research opens up new possibilities for advancements in quantum metrology and sensing technologies.

Abstract:Squeezing is a crucial resource for quantum information processing and quantum sensing. In levitated nanomechanics, squeezed states of motion can be generated via temporal control of the trapping frequency of a massive particle. However, the amount of achievable squeezing typically suffers from detrimental environmental effects. We analyze the performance of a scheme that, by embedding careful time-control of trapping potentials and fully accounting for the most relevant sources of noise – including measurement backaction – achieves significant levels of mechanical squeezing. The feasibility of our proposal, which is close to experimental state-of-the-art, makes it a valuable tool for quantum state engineering.

Abstract:Nonlinear forces allow motion of a mechanical oscillator to be squeezed below the zero-point motion. Of existing methods, mechanical parametric amplification is relatively accessible, but previously thought to be limited to 3 dB of squeezing in the steady state. We consider the effect of applying continuous weak measurement and feedback to this system. If the parametric drive is optimally detuned from resonance, correlations between the quadratures of motion allow unlimited steady-state squeezing. Compared to backaction evasion, we demonstrate that the measurement strength, temperature and efficiency requirements for quantum squeezing are significantly relaxed.

Abstract:A weak measurement approach is proposed to entangle and squeeze atoms. We show that even for very small coupling strength between light and atoms, one can achieve large squeezing unattainable with normal measurement-based squeezing. Post-selecting the photons interacting with spins via a weak off-resonant quantum nondemolition interaction (QND) in a state nearly orthogonal to its initial state can strengthen the entanglement among elementary spins and thus enhance spin squeezing. The squeezing process is probabilistic but the created state is unconditionally determined. Further control of the post-selection parameter and the detection process can transform the QND-like spin squeezing into the one-axis-twisting or even two-axis-twisting type.

Abstract:Quantum sensing, along with quantum communications and quantum computing, is commonly considered as the most important application of quantum optics. Among the quantum-sensing experiments, schemes based on squeezed states of light are popular choices due to their natural quadrature components. Since the first experimental demonstration of quantum-squeezing-enhanced phase measurement beyond the shot-noise limit in 1987, quantum-squeezing techniques toward practical sensing and tracking have been extensively investigated. In this paper, we briefly review the recent developments of quantum squeezing and its applications in several advanced systems for measurements of position, rotation, dynamic motion, magnetic fields, and gravitational waves. Abstract:Cavity optomechanical (COM) sensors, enhanced by quantum squeezing or entanglement, have become powerful tools for measuring ultra-weak forces with high precision and sensitivity. However, these sensors usually rely on linear COM couplings, a fundamental limitation when measurements of the mechanical energy are desired. Very recently, a giant enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio was predicted in a quadratic COM system. Here we show that the performance of such a system can be further improved surpassing the standard quantum limit by using quantum squeezed light. Our approach is compatible with available engineering techniques of advanced COM sensors and provides new opportunities for using COM sensors in tests of fundamental laws of physics and quantum metrology applications.

Abstract:Continuous measurements of the position of an oscillator become projective on position eigenstates when the measurements are made faster than the coherent evolution. We evidence an effect of this transition on a spin oscillator within an ensemble of $2\times10^{10}$ room-temperature atoms by observing correlations between the quadratures of the meter light field. These correlations squeeze the fluctuations of the light quadratures below the vacuum level. When the measurement is slower than the oscillation, we generate 11.5 dB and detect 8.5 dB of squeezing in a tunable band that is a fraction of the resonance frequency. When the measurement is as fast as the oscillation, we detect 4.7 dB of squeezing that spans more than one decade of frequencies below the resonance. Our results demonstrate a new regime of continuous quantum measurements on material oscillators, and set a new benchmark for the performance of a linear quantum sensor.

Protection of Noise Squeezing in a Quantum Interferometer with Optimal Resource Allocation

Abstract:Interferometers are crucial for precision measurements, including gravitational waves, laser ranging, radar, and imaging. The phase sensitivity, the core parameter, can be quantum-enhanced to break the standard quantum limit (SQL) using quantum states. However, quantum states are highly fragile and quickly degrade with losses. We design and demonstrate a quantum interferometer utilizing a beam splitter with a variable splitting ratio to protect the quantum resource against environmental impacts. The optimal phase sensitivity can reach the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the system. This quantum interferometer can greatly reduce the quantum source requirements in quantum measurements. In theory, with a 66.6% loss rate, the sensitivity can break the SQL using only a 6.0 dB squeezed quantum resource with the current interferometer rather than a 24 dB squeezed quantum resource with a conventional squeezing-vacuum-injected Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In experiments, when using a 2.0 dB squeezed vacuum state, the sensitivity enhancement remains at ∼1.6 dB via optimizing the first splitting ratio when the loss rate changes from 0% to 90%, indicating that the quantum resource is excellently protected with the existence of losses in practical applications. This strategy could open a way to retain quantum advantages for quantum information processing and quantum precision measurement in lossy environments.
Squeezing Enhancement in Lossy Multi-Path Atom Interferometers

Abstract:This paper explores the sensitivity gains afforded by spin-squeezed states in atom interferometry, in particular using Bragg diffraction. We introduce a generalised input-output formalism that accurately describes realistic, non-unitary interferometers, including losses due to velocity selectivity and scattering into undesired momentum states. This formalism is applied to evaluate the performance of one-axis twisted spin-squeezed states in improving phase sensitivity. Our results show that by carefully optimising the parameters of the Bragg beam splitters and controlling the degree of squeezing, it is possible to improve the sensitivity of the interferometer by several dB with respect to the standard quantum limit despite realistic levels of losses in light pulse operations. However, the analysis also highlights the challenges associated with achieving these improvements in practice, most notably the impact of finite temperature on the benefits of entanglement. The results suggest ways of optimising interferometric setups to exploit quantum entanglement under realistic conditions, thereby contributing to advances in precision metrology with atom interferometers.

Abstract:Quantum mechanical limit governed by Heisenberg uncertainty relation decides the ultimate precision of nanomechanical systems. Quantum squeezing can improve the precision by reducing quantum fluctuations in one desired amplitude of the two quadrature amplitudes. Traditional nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) hardly achieve quantum squeezing due to their thickness limits. We propose a scheme to obtain squeezed quantum states through typical experimental graphene NEMS structures taking advantages of its atomic scale thickness. The zero-point displacement uncertainty Delta x(zp) and quantum squeezing factor R of graphene NEMS have been studied.

Abstract:Squeezing is a resource that enables precision enhancements in quantum metrology and can be used as a basis for the generation of entanglement by linear optics. While strong squeezing is challenging to generate in optical fields, here we present simple periodic modulation protocols in optomechanical systems that can generate large squeezing of their mechanical degrees of freedom for realistic system parameters. We then proceed to show how such protocols can serve to improve the measurement precision of weak forces and enhance the generation of entanglement between test masses that are subject to any kind of weak interaction. Moreover, these protocols can be reverted to reduce the amount of injected energy, while preserving the generated entanglement and making it more resilient to noise. We present the principle at work, discuss its application in a variety of physical settings, including levitated and tethered mechanical harmonic oscillators, and present example applications to Casimir and gravitational forces.

Quantum metrology with a squeezed Kerr oscillator

Abstract:We study the squeezing dynamics in a Kerr-nonlinear oscillator, and quantify the metrological usefulness of the resulting states. Even if the nonlinearity limits the attainable squeezing by making the evolution non-Gaussian, the states obtained still have a high quantum Fisher information for sensing displacements. However, contrary to the Gaussian case, the amplitude of the displacement cannot be estimated by simple quadrature measurements. Therefore, we propose the use of a measurement-after-interaction protocol where a linear quadrature measurement is preceded by an additional nonlinear evolution, and show the significant sensitivity enhancement that can be obtained. Our results are robust when considering realistic imperfections such as energy relaxation, and can be implemented in state-of-the-art experimental setups.
