Abstract:Lions (Panthera leo) are a keystone species of many wildlife areas and, as such, understanding their dietary ecology is important for holistic wildlife management. Knowledge of lion feeding ecology enables researchers and wildlife managers to better understand predator–prey dynamics and ecological limits governing their local contexts. Where kill sites can be physically located in the field, they can provide important baseline information on lion diet. In this study, Global Positioning System (GPS) collar data were used together with field observations to investigate the dietary breadth of lions at Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, Zimbabwe. Results showed that lions in our study had a moderately specialised diet with zebra (Equus quagga) constituting the largest proportion of prey species consumed. A massive anthrax outbreak occurred during the study, drastically reducing numbers of several prey species, and this provided an opportunity to test possible shifts in lion diet in response to changes in prey abundance. Prey species selection before the anthrax outbreak was significantly different to the period after the outbreak, indicating a shift in diet post‐outbreak. Notable increases were observed in kill rates of species that were not severely affected by anthrax, namely warthog (Phacochoerus africanus), zebra, wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and eland (Taurotragus oryx). Quantifying lion dietary requirements is important for assessing the ecological and economic impacts they have on prey populations. In addition to space‐use ecology, this study shows that GPS collar data can facilitate diet investigation in large carnivores thereby providing useful information for ecological management. Résumé Les lions (Panthera leo) sont une espèce clé dans de nombreuses zones de la faune ; il est important de comprendre leur écologie alimentaire pour une gestion holistique de la faune. La connaissance de l'écologie de l'alimentation des lions permet aux chercheurs et aux responsables de la gestion de la faune de mieux comprendre la dynamique prédateur‐proie et les limites écologiques qui régissent leurs contextes locaux. Lorsque les sites d'abattage peuvent être physiquement localisés sur le terrain, ils peuvent fournir des informations de base importantes sur le régime alimentaire des lions. Dans cette étude, les données des colliers GPS (Global Positioning System) ont été utilisées avec des observations sur le terrain pour étudier l'étendue du régime alimentaire des lions dans la réserve naturelle de Malilangwe, au Zimbabwe. Les résultats ont montré que les lions de notre étude avaient un régime alimentaire modérément spécialisé, le zèbre (Equus quagga) constituant la plus grande proportion des espèces de proies consommées. Une épidémie massive d'anthrax s'est déclenchée pendant l'étude, réduisant considérablement le nombre de plusieurs espèces de proies, ce qui a permis de tester d'éventuels changements dans le régime alimentaire des lions en réponse à des changements dans l'abondance des proies. La sélection des espèces de proies avant l'épidémie d'anthrax était considérablement différente de celle de la période suivant l'épidémie, ce qui indique un changement de régime alimentaire après l'épidémie. Des augmentations importantes ont été observées dans les taux d'abattage des espèces qui n'ont pas été gravement touchées par l'anthrax, à savoir le phacochère (Phacochoerus africanus), le zèbre, le gnou (Connochaetes taurinus) et l'éland (Taurotragus oryx). Il est important de quantifier les besoins alimentaires des lions pour évaluer l'impact écologique et économique qu'ils ont sur les populations de proies. Outre l'écologie de l'utilisation de l'espace, cette étude montre que les données des colliers GPS peuvent faciliter l'étude du régime alimentaire des grands carnivores et fournir ainsi des informations utiles pour la gestion écologique.
