Abstract:Multispectral imaging is an emerging technology that captures multiple images across a wide range of wavelengths, including UV, visible, and IR, and even further into the electromagnetic spectrum well beyond the capabilities of the human eye. Hyperspectral imaging expands this idea to capture hundreds of bands of continuous spectra of objects with better spectral resolution but requires expensive optical components and complicated systems such as diffraction gratings, prisms, etc. The optical system for multispectral imaging technology can be made simpler and more compact. This paper presents a simple six-band multispectral imaging system based on the Fabry-Perot multilayer, which can not only generate color images but also reconstruct the spectrum data, showing promise in applications such as precision agriculture, color imaging, and remote sensing. Abstract:Wide -band, high spectral resolution, and miniaturized imaging spectrometers have important applications. However, the working band, spectral resolution, and volume of the imaging spectrometers are mutually restricted. To solve this problem, we proposed a method in which multiple working bands share the same optical components except gratings, and the working bands switch with the switching of the working gratings. Based on the freeform surfaces characterized by XY polynomials, we designed a compact wide -band triple grating imaging spectrometer through the design ideas of human -computer interaction and iterative optimization. The imaging spectrometer works in the wavelength band of 200 nm ti 1600 nm, covering ultraviolet (UV), visible, and near -infrared light, and it has a compact optical path volume of 24 mm x 38 mm x 80 mm. Three gratings with 0.0025 mm, 0.005 mm, and 0.01 mm line spacing are used to realize dispersion with high diffraction efficiency in the bands of 200 nm ti 400 nm, 400 nm ti 800 nm, and 800 nm ti 1600 nm, respectively. The UV detector receives imaging light in the UV band (200 nm ti 400 nm), and the visible near -infrared (VNIR) detector receives imaging light in the visible and near -infrared bands (400 nm ti 1600 nm). The design results show that the spectral resolutions of the three bands are 0.4 nm, 0.8 nm, and 1.6 nm, and the spectral smile and keystone distortion are less than 1.4 mu m. Abstract:The goal of spectral imaging is to capture the spectral signature of a target. Traditional scanning method for spectral imaging suffers from large system volume and low image acquisition speed for large scenes. In contrast, computational spectral imaging methods have resorted to computation power for reduced system volume, but still endure long computation time for iterative spectral reconstructions. Recently, deep learning techniques are introduced into computational spectral imaging, witnessing fast reconstruction speed, great reconstruction quality, and the potential to drastically reduce the system volume. In this article, we review state-of-the-art deep-learning-empowered computational spectral imaging methods. They are further divided into amplitude-coded, phase-coded, and wavelength-coded methods, based on different light properties used for encoding. To boost future researches, we've also organized publicly available spectral datasets.

Abstract:Conventional energy-integration black-white X-ray imaging lacks the spectral information of X-ray photons. Although X-ray spectra (energy) can be distinguished by the photon-counting technique typically with CdZnTe detectors, it is very challenging to be applied to large-area flat-panel X-ray imaging (FPXI). Herein, multilayer stacked scintillators of different X-ray absorption capabilities and scintillation spectra are designed; in this scenario, the X-ray energy can be discriminated by detecting the emission spectra of each scintillator; therefore, multispectral X-ray imaging can be easily obtained by color or multispectral visible-light camera in a single shot of X-rays. To verify this idea, stacked multilayer scintillators based on several emerging metal halides are fabricated in a cost-effective and scalable solution process, and proof-of-concept multispectral (or multi-energy) FPXI are experimentally demonstrated. The dual-energy X-ray image of a "bone-muscle" model clearly shows the details that are invisible in conventional energy-integration FPXI. By stacking four layers of specifically designed multilayer scintillators with appropriate thicknesses, a prototype FPXI with four energy channels is realized, proving its extendibility to multispectral or even hyperspectral X-ray imaging. This study provides a facile and effective strategy to realize multispectral large-area flat-panel X-ray imaging.

Abstract:The microarray technique, which can provide parallel detection with high throughput in biomedical research, has generated considerable interest since the end of the 20th century. A number of instruments have been reported for microarray detection. In this paper, we have developed a quasi-confocal, multichannel parallel scan hyperspectral fluorescence imaging system for multicolor microarray research. Hyperspectral imaging records the entire emission spectrum for every voxel within the imaged area in contrast to recording only fluorescence intensities of filter-based scanners. When coupled with data analysis, the recorded spectral information allows for quantitative identification of the contributions of multiple, spectrally overlapping fluorescent dyes and elimination of unwanted artifacts. This system is improved with a specifically designed, high performance spectrometer which can offer a spectral resolution of 0.2 nm and operates with spatial resolutions ranging from 2 to 30 μm. We demonstrate the application of the system by reading out arrays for identification of bacteria.

Abstract:Microarray research offers great potential for analysis of gene expression profile and leads to greatly improved experimental throughput. A number of instruments have been reported for microarray detection, such as chemiluminescence, surface plasmon resonance, and fluorescence markers. Abstract:This paper presents novel multispectral filters (MF) for spectral imaging applications with mid-IR (MIR) wavelengths. The metasurface-based filters are fabricated with conventional micro-nano fabrication facilities and exhibit bandwidths less than 250 nm and maximum transmission efficiencies of around 60%. The filters show promise for applications in precision agriculture, medical imaging, gas sensing, and other areas.

Abstract:A method to integrate the spectroscopic system of the push-broom scanning imaging spectrometer onto a single chip is proposed using echelle diffraction grating to split the light in the near infrared range according to different wavelengths. The on-chip spectrometer consists of an optical on-off switch array, a multi-input echelle diffraction grating (EDG) and a detector array. The designed EDG has a channel spacing of about 4nm and up to 129 channels corresponding to wavelengths from 1.25 μm to 1.75 μm with channel uniformity less than 2 dB. Based on the 3 μm SOI platform the device is polarization insensitive. The switch array is integrated on the single mode ridge input waveguides, allowing the 129 input waveguides to be selected one-by-one in a time division multiplexed fashion. Since the switch can be scanned very fast (less than 10 microseconds), the imaging spectrometer can be operated in push-broom mode. Due to the CMOS compatibility, the waveguide EDG based imaging spectrometer can provide a low-cost solution for remote sensing on unmanned aerial vehicles, with advantages of small size, light weight vibration-proof, and high scalability.

Abstract:Multispectral imaging system is of wide application in relevant fields for its capability in acquiring spectral information of scenes. Its limitation is that, due to the large number of spectral channels, the imaging process can be quite time-consuming when capturing high-resolution (HR) multispectral images. To resolve this limitation, this paper proposes a fast multispectral imaging framework based on the image sensor pixel-binning and spectral unmixing techniques. The framework comprises a fast imaging stage and a computational reconstruction stage. In the imaging stage, only a few spectral images are acquired in HR, while most spectral images are acquired in low resolution (LR). The LR images are captured by applying pixel binning on the image sensor, such that the exposure time can be greatly reduced. In the reconstruction stage, an optimal number of basis spectra are computed and the signal-dependent noise statistics are estimated. Then the unknown HR images are efficiently reconstructed by solving a closed-form cost function that models the spatial and spectral degradations. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is evaluated using real-scene multispectral images. Experimental results validate that, in general, the method outperforms the state of the arts in terms of reconstruction accuracy, with additional $20\times $ or more improvement in computational efficiency.
A Programmable Optical Filter with Arbitrary Transmittance for Fast Spectroscopic Imaging and Spectral Data Post-Processing.

Abstract:Spectral reconstruction method based on narrow-band measurements has been demonstrated to achieve ultrafast spectroscopic imaging with high spatial and spectral resolution, in which multiple narrow-band images are collected by using several specific filters. Although commercially available filters can be employed in such method, filters with complex transmittance that are difficult to be fabricated typically show significant improvement in spectral reconstruction accuracy. In this study, a two dimensional programmable optical filter based on digital micromirror device (DMD) is proposed, in which its transmittance spectrum can be arbitrarily and quickly switched to realize complex transmittance. Furthermore, its flexible transmittance enables directly hardware-based spectral data post-processing, which can perform data acquisition and analysis simultaneously. Those have been evaluated by the diffuse reflectance spectra from normal and occluded skin flaps, as well as Raman spectra from live, apoptosis and necrosis leukemia cells. Our simulation results show that much higher spectral reconstruction accuracies can be achieved by the optimized filters with complex transmittance. Furthermore, the classification accuracy by using the proposed method is comparable to those achieved by conventional numerical methods. Therefore, based on the proposed programmable optical filter, fast spectroscopic imaging with high spatial and spectral resolution can be achieved for observing fast changing phenomena and even real-time target identification.
Digital Fourier Transform Spectroscopy: a High-Performance, Scalable Technology for On-Chip Spectrum Analysis

Abstract:Optical spectrum analysis is the cornerstone of spectroscopic sensing, optical network performance monitoring, and hyperspectral imaging. While conventional high-performance spectrometers used to perform such analysis are often large benchtop instruments, on-chip spectrometers have recently emerged as a promising alternative with apparent Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) advantages. Existing on-chip spectrometer designs, however, are limited in spectral channel count and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here we demonstrate a transformative on-chip digital Fourier transform (dFT) spectrometer that can acquire high-resolution spectra via time- domain modulation of a reconfigurable Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The device, fabricated and packaged using industry-standard silicon photonics technology, claims the multiplex advantage to dramatically boost SNR and unprecedented scalability capable of addressing exponentially increasing numbers of spectral channels. We further implemented machine learning regularization techniques to spectrum reconstruction and achieved significant noise suppression and spectral resolution enhancement beyond the classical Rayleigh criterion.

Abstract:Integrated spectrometers provide the possibility of compact, low-cost portable spectroscopy sensing, which is the critical component of the lab-on-a-chip system. However, using existing on-chip designs is challenging to realize a high-resolution miniature spectrometer over a broad wavelength range. Here, we demonstrate an on-chip time-sampling narrowband filter array spectrometer that enables simultaneous acquisition of high-resolution spectra via optical Fabry–Pérot cavities and a large spectral range with tunable free spectral range free filters. Two spectrometers consisting of five and seven filter cells with a compact footprint are fabricated and experimentally characterized, demonstrating a resolution of <0.43 and <0.51 nm and a spectral range of 73.2 and 102.7 nm, respectively. Unknown broad bandwidth input signal spectra can be successfully retrieved. Integrating more filter cells with thermal isolation trenches can dramatically boost the operational spectral range. Such spectrometers may open up new pathways toward spectral analytical applications.

Deep-learning Based On-Chip Rapid Spectral Imaging with High Spatial Resolution

Abstract:Spectral imaging extends the concept of traditional color cameras to capture images across multiple spectral channels and has broad application prospects. Conventional spectral cameras based on scanning methods suffer from the drawbacks of low acquisition speed and large volume. On-chip computational spectral imaging based on metasurface filters provides a promising scheme for portable applications, but endures long computation time due to point-by-point iterative spectral reconstruction and mosaic effect in the reconstructed spectral images. In this study, on-chip rapid spectral imaging was demonstrated, which eliminated the mosaic effect in the spectral image by deep-learning-based spectral data cube reconstruction. The experimental results show that 4 orders of magnitude faster than the iterative spectral reconstruction were achieved, and the fidelity of the spectral reconstruction for the standard color plate was over 99% for a standard color board. In particular, video-rate spectral imaging was demonstrated for moving objects and outdoor driving scenes with good performance for recognizing metamerism, where the concolorous sky and white cars can be distinguished via their spectra, showing great potential for autonomous driving and other practical applications in the field of intelligent perception.

Abstract:Multispectral imaging plays an important role in many applications from astronomical imaging, earth observation to biomedical imaging. However, the current technologies are complex with multiple alignment-sensitive components, predetermined spatial and spectral parameters by manufactures. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot multispectral imaging technique that gives flexibility to end-users with a very simple optical setup, thank to spatial correlation and spectral decorrelation of speckle patterns. These seemingly random speckle patterns are point spreading functions (PSFs) generated by light from point sources propagating through a strongly scattering medium. The spatial correlation of PSFs allows image recovery with deconvolution techniques, while the spectral decorrelation allows them to play the role of tune-able spectral filters in the deconvolution process. Our demonstrations utilizing optical physics of strongly scattering media and computational imaging present the most cost-effective approach for multispectral imaging with great advantages.

Abstract:The multisensor system based on single-pixel imaging (SPI) can realize the simultaneous measurement and imaging of various optical information (such as spectrum, polarization, etc.), in which a single-pixel sensor can measure one kind of optical information. Spectral imaging technology can simultaneously obtain rich information such as spatial structure and fine spectral characteristics of the target scene. The architecture and implementation of most spectral imaging systems are complex, which limits or affects their indicators, parameters, and applications to varying degrees. Here, we propose a novel multispectral SPI method based on spatial and spectral dimension decoupling. This method uses spatial dimension compression coding modulation, and spectral dimension modulation through ingenious optical system design. It utilizes a single-pixel detector array combined with traditional spectral filtering technology to directly and parallel collect spatial image compression coding information from various spectral channels. This method reduces the information-carrying capacity of a single photon and reduces the requirements for the detection signal-to-noise ratio. The experiment demonstrated 15 channels of visible and near-infrared spectral SPI and demonstrated real-time multispectral SPI with an imaging speed of 5 Hz, which can be extended to spectral imaging with higher spectral resolution and more spectral channels. This work can facilitate the use of multisensor arrays for more convenient research such as spectral information acquisition.

Abstract:Metasurface based micro-spectrometer presents a promising avenue for achieving compact, lightweight, and cost-effective solutions for miniaturization of hyperspectral imaging systems. Nevertheless, this type of design encounter limitations primarily due to constrained manipulation mechanism of light field, resulting in high cross-correlation among transmission spectra and imperfect reconstructed images. In this paper, we propose and numerically demonstrate a micro-spectrometer based on metasurface combined with multilayer thin films, whose spectral response improves performance for application, i.e. achieving low spectral cross-correlation. Additionally, we incorporate particle swarm optimization with compressed sensing algorithm to optimize the proposed micro-spectrometer. This approach effectively reconstructs both narrowband and broadband hyperspectral signals with minimal error, achieving an impressive 2nm spectral resolution. The simulation results of hyperspectral imaging demonstrated that the proposed methodology successfully reconstructs broadband hyperspectral images with an average spectral fidelity of 91.42%. This method holds significant potential for integrating into smartphones and other portable spectrometers, advancing the design of compact hyperspectral imaging systems.
