Abstract:Organic semiconductors, especially polymer semiconductors, have attracted extensive attention as organic thermoelectric materials due to their capabilities for flexibility, low-cost fabrication, solution processability and low thermal conductivity. However, it is challenging to obtain high-performance organic thermoelectric materials because of the low intrinsic carrier concentration of organic semiconductors. The main method to control the carrier concentration of polymers is the chemical doping process by charge transfer between polymer and dopant. Therefore, the deep understanding of doping mechanisms from the point view of chemical structure has been highly desired to overcome the bottlenecks in polymeric thermoelectrics. In this contribution, we will briefly review the recently emerging progress for discovering the structure–property relationship of organic thermoelectric materials with high performance. Highlights include some achievements about doping strategies to effectively modulate the carrier concentration, the design rules of building blocks and side chains to enhance charge transport and improve the doping efficiency. Finally, we will give our viewpoints on the challenges and opportunities in the field of polymer thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:This review uncovers the role of doping in thermoelectric materials, focusing on optimizing carrier concentration, modulating band structure, and achieving temperature‐dependent carrier optimization. It also demonstrates the influence of dopants on carrier scattering and summarizes some novel doping strategies to maintain high mobility. Additionally, the review discusses the impact of doping on phonon dispersion, lattice anhamonicity and electron‐phonon coupling. Doping is a key method employed in semiconductor technology for tuning the carrier‐density‐dependent electrical properties. In thermoelectric materials, which are typically heavily doped semiconductors, more impact factors are needed to be considered due to the heavy dose doping compared to normal semiconductors beyond carrier concentration optimization, such as band structure modification, carrier scattering mechanism and even thermal transport property. In this review, the doping effect determined by the intrinsic band features and vice versa the influence of dopants on band structure is first illustrated; and then introduce the approaches to overcoming the dilemma in effective doping caused by the temperature‐dependent optimal carrier concentration. Second, the strategies including rational vacancy design, proper selection of dopants and lattice purification toward high efficient doping and weakened carrier scattering strength are reviewed. Third, the recent discovery of the effect of dopant on thermal transport is highlighted covering the dopant‐induced local lattice distortion and exceptional strong electron‐phonon coupling. Finally, a perspective is given for the doping strategies to further boost the performance of thermoelectric materials.

Unravelling Doping Effects on Pedot at the Molecular Level: from Geometry to Thermoelectric Transport Properties

Abstract:Tuning carrier concentration via chemical doping is the most successful strategy to optimize the thermoelectric figure of merit. Nevertheless, how the dopants affect charge transport is not completely understood. Here we unravel the doping effects by explicitly including the scattering of charge carriers with dopants on thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), PEDOT, which is a p-type thermoelectric material with the highest figure of merit reported. We corroborate that the PEDOT exhibits a distinct transition from the aromatic to quinoid-like structure of backbone, and a semiconductor-to-metal transition with an increase in the level of doping. We identify a close-to-unity charge transfer from PEDOT to the dopant, and find that the ionized impurity scattering dominates over the acoustic phonon scattering in the doped PEDOT. By incorporating both scattering mechanisms, the doped PEDOT exhibits mobility, Seebeck coefficient and power factors in very good agreement with the experimental data, and the lightly doped PEDOT exhibits thermoelectric properties superior to the heavily doped one. We reveal that the thermoelectric transport is highly anisotropic in ordered crystals, and suggest to utilize large power factors in the direction of polymer backbone and low lattice thermal conductivity in the stacking and lamellar directions, which is viable in chain-oriented amorphous nanofibers.
Chemical approaches for electronic doping in photovoltaic materials beyond crystalline silicon

Abstract:Electronic doping is applied to tailor the electrical and optoelectronic properties of semiconductors, which have been widely adopted in information and clean energy technologies, like integrated circuit fabrication and PVs. Though this concept has prevailed in conventional PVs, it has achieved limited success in the new-generation PV materials, particularly in halide perovskites, owing to their soft lattice nature and self-compensation by intrinsic defects. In this review, we summarize the evolution of the theoretical understanding and strategies of electronic doping from Si-based photovoltaics to thin-film technologies, e.g., GaAs, CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)Se-2, and also cover the emerging PVs including halide perovskites and organic solar cells. We focus on the chemical approaches to electronic doping, emphasizing various chemical interactions/bonding throughout materials synthesis/modification to device fabrication/operation. Furthermore, we propose new classifications and models of electronic doping based on the physical and chemical properties of dopants, in the context of solid-state chemistry, which inspires further development of optoelectronics based on perovskites and other hybrid materials. Finally, we outline the effects of electronic doping in semiconducting materials and highlight the challenges that need to be overcome for reliable and controllable doping.
Chemical Doping of Organic and Coordination Polymers for Thermoelectric and Spintronic Applications: A Theoretical Understanding.

Abstract:ConspectusThe controlled doping of organic semiconductors (OSCs) is crucial not only for improving the performance of electronic and optoelectronic devices but also for enabling efficient thermoelectric conversion and spintronic applications. The mechanism of doping for OSCs is fundamentally different from that of their inorganic counterparts. In particular, the interplay between dopants and host materials is complicated considering the low dielectric constant, strong lattice-charge interaction, and flexible nature of materials. Recent experimental breakthroughs in the molecular design of dopants and the precise doping with high spatial resolution call for more profound understandings as to how the dopant interacts with the charge introduced to OSCs and how the admixture of dopants alters the electronic properties of host materials before one can exploit controllable doping to realize desired functionalities.By employing state-of-the-art computational tools, we revealed the effects of doping in representative and emerging organic and coordination polymers aiming toward thermoelectric and spintronic applications. We showed that dopants and hosts should be taken as an integrated system, and the type of charge-transfer interaction between them is the key for spin polarization. First, we found doping-induced modifications to the electronic band in a potassium-doped coordination polymer, an n-type thermoelectric material. The charge localization due to the Coulomb interaction between the completely ionized dopant and the injected charge on the polymer backbone and also the polaron band formation at low doping levels are responsible for the nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the conductivity and Seebeck coefficient observed in recent experiments. The mechanistic insights gained from these results have provided important guidelines on how to control the doping level and working temperature to achieve a high thermoelectric conversion efficiency. Next, we demonstrated that the ionized dopants scatter charge carriers via screened Coulomb interactions, and it may become a dominant scattering mechanism in doped polymers. After incorporating the ionized dopant scattering mechanism in PEDOT:Tos, a p-type thermoelectric polymer, we were able to reproduce the measured Seebeck coefficient-electrical conductivity relationship spanning a wide range of doping levels, highlighting the importance of ionized dopant scattering in charge transport.In the two cases described above, charge injection is enabled by integral charge transfer between the dopant and host polymers. In a third example, we showed that a novel type of stacked two-dimensional polymer, conjugated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with closed-shell electronic structures, can be spin polarized by iodine doping via fractional charge transfer even at high doping levels. We then manifested that magnetization can be attained in nonmagnetic materials lacking metal d electrons and further designed two new COFs with tunable spintronic structure and magnetic interactions after the iodine doping. These findings have suggested a practical route to enable spin polarization in nonradical materials by chemical doping via orbital hybridization, which holds great promise for flexible spintronic applications.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials can realize the direct transformation between heat and electricity, thereby facilitating the recycling of waste heat. Semiconducting pi-conjugated polymers (pi-CPs) have been largely explored as organic TE materials thanks to the facile molecular tunability of their electronic properties, their room-temperature solution-processability, their intrinsic low thermal conductivity, and their outstanding mechanical flexibility. In this Focus Review, we describe two key strategies-chemical doping and structural tailoring-in polymeric TEs for strengthening TE power factors of pi-CPs. First, the doping mechanisms are unraveled by a sequential process of charge transfer and free carrier release, followed by the introduction of various doping methods for enhancing the chemical doping. Second, the design principles for polymeric structures including the pi-backbone and side-chain engineering are presented. Third, supplementary strategies such as polymer chain alignment and construction of polymer blends are identified. Finally, the existing prime obstacles to future development are discussed and an outlook on feasible solutions to resolving them is provided.
Site-specific chemical doping reveals electron atmospheres at the surfaces of organic semiconductor crystals

Abstract:Chemical doping controls the electronic properties of organic semiconductors, but so far, doping protocols and mechanisms are less developed than in conventional semiconductors. Here we describe a unique, site-specific, n-type surface doping mechanism for single crystals of two benchmark organic semiconductors that produces dramatic improvement in electron transport and provides unprecedented evidence for doping-induced space charge. The surface doping chemistry specifically targets crystallographic step edges, which are known electron traps, simultaneously passivating the traps and releasing itinerant electrons. The effect on electron transport is profound: field-effect electron mobility increases by as much as a factor of ten, and its temperature-dependent behaviour switches from thermally activated to band-like. Our findings suggest new site-specific strategies to dope organic semiconductors that differ from the conventional redox chemistry of randomly distributed substitutional impurities. Critically, they also verify the presence of doping-induced electron atmospheres, confirming long-standing expectations for organic systems from conventional solid-state theory.

Abstract:Molecular doping is a powerful method to fine‐tune the thermoelectric properties of organic semiconductors, in particular to impart the requisite electrical conductivity. The incorporation of molecular dopants can, however, perturb the microstructure of semicrystalline organic semiconductors, which complicates the development of a detailed understanding of structure–property relationships. To better understand how the doping pathway and the resulting dopant counterion influence the thermoelectric performance and transport properties, a new dimer dopant, (N‐DMBI)2, is developed. Subsequently, FBDPPV is then n‐doped with dimer dopants (N‐DMBI)2, (RuCp*mes)2, and the hydride‐donor dopant N‐DMBI‐H. By comparing the UV–vis–NIR absorption spectra and morphological characteristics of the doped polymers, it is found that not only the doping mechanism, but also the shape of the counterion strongly influence the thermoelectric properties and transport characteristics. (N‐DMBI)2, which is a direct electron‐donating dopant with a comparatively small, relatively planar counterion, gives the best power factor among the three systems studied here. Additionally, temperature‐dependent conductivity and Seebeck coefficient measurements differ between the three dopants with (N‐DMBI)2 yielding the best thermoelectric properties. The results of this study of dopant effects on thermoelectric properties provide insight into guidelines for future organic thermoelectrics.

Abstract:Organic thermoelectric (OTE) materials have gained widespread attention because of their potential for wearable power generators and solid cooling elements. Nevertheless, the development of state-of-the-art OTE materials still suffers from limited molecular categories because of the rarity of molecular design strategies, which limits further development of this emerging field. Recently, many efforts have been devoted to developing molecular design concepts for high performance OTE materials. In this mini review, we present the fundamentals of the thermoelectric (TE) effect and the basic guidelines for designing OTE materials based on doped semiconductors. Subsequently, we provide an overview of the molecular design of conjugated backbones and side chains for enabling efficient TE conversion, including the effects of the molecular framework, heteroatomic substitution, and side chain length and polarity. Finally, we emphasize the developing tendency of molecular engineering towards high-performance and multifunctional OTE materials.

Abstract:In this study, we describe a facile solution-processing method to effectively dope versatile n-type organic semiconductors, including fullerene, n-type small molecules, and graphene by commercially available ammonium and phosphonium salts via in situ anion-induced electron transfer. In addition to the Lewis basicity of anions, we unveiled that the ionic binding strength between the cation and anion of the salts is also crucial in modulating the electron transfer strength of the dopants to affect the resulting doping efficiency. Furthermore, combined with the rational design of n-type molecules, an n-doped organic semiconductor is demonstrated to be thermally and environmentally stable. This finding provides a simple and generally applicable method to make highly efficient n-doped conductors which complements the well-established p-doped organics such as PEDOT:PSS for organic electronic applications.

Abstract:N-doping plays an irreplaceable role in controlling the electron concentration of organic semiconductors thus to improve performance of organic semiconductor devices. However, compared with many mature p-doping methods, n-doping of organic semiconductor is still of challenges. In particular, dopant stability/processability, counterion-semiconductor immiscibility and doping induced microstructure non-uniformity have restricted the application of n-doping in high-performance devices. Here, we report a computer-assisted screening approach to rationally design of a triaminomethane-type dopant, which exhibit extremely high stability and strong hydride donating property due to its thermally activated doping mechanism. This triaminomethane derivative shows excellent counterion-semiconductor miscibility (counter cations stay with the polymer side chains), high doping efficiency and uniformity. By using triaminomethane, we realize a record n-type conductivity of up to 21Scm(-1) and power factors as high as 51 mu Wm(-1)K(-2) even in films with thicknesses over 10 mu m, and we demonstrate the first reported all-polymer thermoelectric generator. Realizing efficient n-doping in organic thermoelectrics remains a challenge due to dopant-semiconductor immiscibility, poor dopant stability and low doping efficiency. Here, the authors use computer-assisted screening to develop n-dopants for thermoelectric polymers that show record power factors.
Strategic Doping in Metal Halide Perovskites for Thermoelectrics

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have not only shown unique merits of ultralow thermal conductivity compared to traditional inorganic thermoelectric (TE) materials, but also featured superior Seebeck effect to organic semiconductors, thereby affording great prospect in TE field. However, their severely poor electrical conductivity significantly hinders TE applications, which results from the restrained doping efficiency due to the limited accommodation capability of heterogeneous dopants and the heavy compensation from interior defects in MHPs. Realizing high‐effectiveness electrical doping in MHPs becomes imperative yet remains extremely challenging. This Minireview is therefore intended to sort out the diversified doping strategies and highlight their underlying impacts on both thermal and electrical transportation in MHPs. These strategies are systematically classified into bulk and surface/interface doping as dictated by where the dopants are implemented while unravelling how they critically impact TE properties in distinctive means. A rational guideline is hence derived to strengthen electrical doping towards desirable perovskite TEs.
Boosting the Seebeck Coefficient for Organic Coordination Polymers: Role of Doping-Induced Polaron Band Formation.

Abstract:Organic polymers are becoming emerging thermoelectric materials. Tremendous progress has been achieved for p-type doping, but efficient n-type organic materials are still rare. By investigating potassium-doped n-type poly(nickel-ethyl-enetetrathiolate) using density functional theory coupled with Boltzmann transport equation, we find that (i) formation of the electron polaron band (EPB) split from the conduction band (CB) dominates electron transport; (ii) at low doping concentration, the upper CB gets involved in transport in addition to the EPB as the temperature rises, leading to a highly elevated Seebeck coefficient and power factor; and (iii) at even higher temperature, because the CB starts to dominate, the Seebeck coefficient levels off and then decreases with temperature. Such an "exotic" nonmonotonic temperature effect has been found in experiment but has never been explained. We find that such behavior is primarily due to a polaron effect. A doping-induced polaron band can be employed to boost the Seebeck coefficient, making the organic coordination polymer a peculiar n-type thermoelectric material.

Abstract:Abstract With the rising popularity of organic thermoelectrics, the interest in doping strategies for organic semiconductors has increased strongly over the last decade. Here, we use aggregate data to discuss how far the approaches pursued till date have brought the community in terms of typical performance indicators for doped semiconductors in the context of thermoelectric applications. Surprisingly, despite the superlinear increase in the number of publications on the subject matter, the performance indicators show no clear upward trend in the same time range. In the second part, we discuss possible approaches to break this deadlock. A specifically promising approach, controlling the distribution of dopant atoms in the host material, is discussed in some quantitative detail by experiments and numerical simulations. We show that spontaneous modulation doping, that is, the spatial separation between static dopant ions and mobile charge carriers, leads to a dramatic conductivity increase at low dopant loading. Doping optimization of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 for high thermoelectric ef fi ciency

Abstract:The newly discovered photovoltaic hybrid perovskite materials have been suggested for thermoelectric applications as they possess very low thermal conductivity and large Seebeck coefficient. However, to achieve a high figure of merit, chemical doping is necessary to increase the electrical conductivity. In the present work, we examined the thermoelectric figure of merit for CH3NH3PbI3 as a function of carrier concentration based on first-principles calculations. For doped semiconductors, the impurity scattering usually plays a dominant role in the charge transport. Both impurity scattering and acoustic phonon scattering have been incorporated in our calculations. We showed that at the impurity concentration of 10 cm , the room temperature zT value of tetragonal CH3NH3PbI3 could be optimized to reach unity at the carrier concentration on the same order of magnitude as 10 cm . The hole-doped CH3NH3PbI3 exhibits superior thermoelectric property than the electron-doped one, and we propose to engineer the vacancies of organic cations for the enhanced hole concentration and thermoelectric efficiency. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Chemical doping is a key process for investigating charge transport in organic semiconductors and improving certain (opto)electronic devices1–9. N(electron)-doping is fundamentally more challenging than p(hole)-doping and typically achieves a very low doping efficiency (η) of less than 10%1,10. An efficient molecular n-dopant should simultaneously exhibit a high reducing power and air stability for broad applicability1,5,6,9,11, which is very challenging. Here we show a general concept of catalysed n-doping of organic semiconductors using air-stable precursor-type molecular dopants. Incorporation of a transition metal (for example, Pt, Au, Pd) as vapour-deposited nanoparticles or solution-processable organometallic complexes (for example, Pd2(dba)3) catalyses the reaction, as assessed by experimental and theoretical evidence, enabling greatly increased η in a much shorter doping time and high electrical conductivities (above 100 S cm−1; ref. 12). This methodology has technological implications for realizing improved semiconductor devices and offers a broad exploration space of ternary systems comprising catalysts, molecular dopants and semiconductors, thus opening new opportunities in n-doping research and applications12, 13.

Abstract:Organic semiconductors (OSCs) are attractive for fabrication of thermoelectric devices with low cost, large area, low toxicity, and high flexibility. In order to achieve high‐performance organic thermoelectric devices (OTEs), it is essential to develop OSCs with high conductivity (σ ), large Seebeck coefficient (S), and low thermal conductivity (κ ). It is equally important to explore efficient dopants matching the need of thermoelectric devices. The thermoelectric performance of a high‐mobility donor–acceptor (D–A) polymer semiconductor, which is doped by an organic salt, is studied. Both a high p‐type electrical conductivity approaching 4 S cm−1 and an excellent power factor (PF) of 7 µW K−2 m−1 are obtained, which are among the highest reported values for polymer semiconductors. Temperature‐dependent conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and power factor of the doped materials are systematically investigated. Detailed analysis on the results of thermoelectric measurements has revealed a hopping transport in the materials, which verifies the empirical relationship: S ∝ σ−1/4 and PF ∝ σ1/2. The results demonstrate that D–A copolymer semiconductors with proper combination of dopants have great potential for fabricating high‐performance thermoelectric devices.

Abstract:Organic thermoelectric is a promising technology for fabricating low-cost and flexible heat-to-electricity conversion devices. However, low electrical conductivity and thermoelectric properties of organic semiconductors restrict their practical applicability. To overcome this limitation, solvent-combination method is developed. Residual solvent in the films provides spaces for the dopants to diffuse, resulting in an exceptional increase of electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power factor in doped conjugated polymer films. Solvent-combination doping method exhibits broad generality to various conjugated polymers, dopants, and solvents.

Abstract:Organic semiconductor (OSCs) thermoelectric materials have been studied widely due to their low thermal conductivity and solution processing characteristics. Currently, the high conductivity (up to 1000 s cm-1 ) has boosted the performance of p-type organic thermoelectric materials substantially. In contrast, the development of n-type organic thermoelectric materials is still limited by their low mobility, inferior air stability, and poor doping efficiency, which is relevant to the molecule structure and dopant dispersion. Herein, the recent development of n-type organic thermoelectric materials was reviewed with an emphasis on molecule structure modification and solution processing. Methods for optimizing conjugate structure were summarized from the effects of conjugated backbone modification and side chains diversification on molecular stacking. The primary n-type dopants were also summarized briefly. Especially, the role of solution aggregation controlling on film preparation and properties was given special attention. Additionally, the emergence of organic diradicals with low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level and no doping was introduced, which shows great potential in n-type organic thermoelectric materials. All these endeavors have led to the development of n-type OSCs materials. This Review is aimed at illustrating the state-of-the-art progress and providing some guideline for the design of organic thermoelectric materials in the future.
