Abstract:The East Kunlun Orogenic Belt is an essential part of the Qin-Qikun composite orogenic system, the most crucial orogenic belt in Qinghai Province, and an important gold ore-producing area in China. The Gouli gold field in its eastern section is one of the most important gold fields discovered in the belt in recent years. The Mailong mining area is an important gold mining area in the Gouli ore-concentrated area. The area has experienced frequent and intense magmatic activity, with intrusive rock bodies extensively exposed and intersected by a complex network of fault structures, providing excellent geological conditions for the formation of gold deposits. However, it is difficult to explore due to high altitude, poor transportation, and shallow coverage. This study used an audio magnetotelluric sounding method to track the deep direction and inclination of known mineral belts in the Mailong mining area, and identified mineral exploration targets, providing a basis for mineral exploration. Subsequently, a gold ore body was discovered through drilling verification, achieving a breakthrough in deep mineral exploration. The electromagnetic exploration method works well for exploring structurally altered rock-type gold deposits in plateau desert areas, and combined with the results of this electromagnetic exploration, a metallogenic geological model and genesis process of the Mailong mining area has been constructed.

Electromagnetic Characterization of Epithermal Gold Deposits: A Case Study from the Tuoniuhe Gold Deposit, Northeast China

Abstract:A high-resolution electromagnetic study has helped to define the mineralization and alteration system of the Cretaceous volcano-sedimentary hosted epithermal gold (Au) deposit in Tuoniuhe, northeast China. Audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) array data were acquired to map the regional resistivity structure of the Mesozoic volcanic field, whereas an AMT profile and a ground magnetic survey line with denser site spacing were deployed across the deposit to image the alteration and mineralization system. The electrical resistivity model from 2D inversion of the AMT profile data reveals a low-resistivity (approximately [Formula: see text]) cover from the surface to a depth of 0.1 km, which is likely caused by clay and sulfide minerals in the subaerial alteration zone. The magnetic survey and a geologic borehole log assisted in outlining a zone of tonalite and andesite with silicification in the depth interval of 0.1–0.3 km, featuring high resistivity ([Formula: see text]) and high magnetization ([Formula: see text]). This zone is a potential gold target bounded by two channels of moderate resistivity (approximately [Formula: see text]) to its northwest and southeast. The two channels possibly coincide with breccia pipes with fractured stockworks and high permeability to allow gold-bearing fluids to move toward the surface. The 2D and 3D resistivity models reveal regions of low resistivity ([Formula: see text]) at the depth range of 0.5–1.0 km beneath the Cretaceous calderas and the deposit, which might be related to magmatic cryptoexplosion breccia. In the 2D resistivity model, this magmatic cryptoexplosion breccia zone connects to the subaerial alteration zone through the two breccia pipes, indicative of a circulation system of gold-bearing fluids. Given the coincidence of Cretaceous volcanism and the age of mineralization, the Cretaceous magma is inferred to have supplied heat that drove the convective hydrothermal activity and also was a source of magmatic fluids that led to the development of the Tuoniuhe epithermal gold deposit.

Abstract:Physical properties and geophysical measurements were conducted on the Xiarihamu copper-nickel mining area and its surrounding areas in the East Kunlun region of Qinghai Province. This work summarizes the physical characteristics of the mineralized strata in the mining area and delineates the exploration prospects within and around the mining area. These findings provide a foundation and direction for future prospecting efforts. By conducting targeted experiments on the known profiles within the mining area using the transient electromagnetic (TEM) method, as well as conducting TEM profile measurements in the covered regions, our geological understanding of the ore-bearing rock mass has been enhanced. Consequently, prospective areas for deep mineral exploration within the mining area were identified, establishing a solid basis for future deep exploration efforts.In the periphery of the mining area, prospecting was based on anomaly verification from high-precision magnetic surveys, supplemented by the interpretation of ground and borehole transient electromagnetic (BTEM) surveys. It was inferred that the electrical and magnetic anomalies in the periphery originate from a common source. The prospecting results indicate that the high-precision magnetic anomalies in the peripheral areas are related to the orientation of the anomaly center and the characteristics of the electrical and magnetic anomalies. The northern extension of the existing magnetic anomaly has been identified as the primary direction for future prospecting efforts.

Mineral Exploration Using Csamt Data: Application to Longmen Region Metallogenic Belt, Guangdong Province, China

Abstract:A controlled-source audio-frequency magnetotelluric (CSAMT) survey has been carried out to investigate potential iron (Fe) and polymetallic (Pb-Zn-Cu) deposits in Longmen region, which is one of the main metallogenic belts in southern China. Conducting geophysical surveys in this area is quite difficult due to mountainous terrain, dense forest, and thick vegetation cover. A total of 560 CSAMT soundings were recorded along twelve surveying lines. Two-dimensional Occam’s inversion scheme was used to interpret these CSAMT data. The resulting electric resistivity models showed that three large-scale highly conductive bodies exist within the surveying area. By integrated interpretation combined with available geologic, geophysical, and geochemical data in this area, three prospective mineral deposits were demarcated. Based on the CSAMT results, a borehole penetrating approximately 250-m depth was drilled at the location of 470 m to the northwest end of line 06, defined with a massive pyrite from the depth of 52–235 m with 7%–16% Fe content, as well as locally high-grade Pb-Zn- and Ag-Ti-bearing ores.
Contrasting Anomaly Patterns of Magmatic–Hydrothermal Polymetallic and Orogenic Gold Deposits and their Suitable Exploration Methods: A Case Study from the Qinling Orogen

Abstract:Anomaly patterns of magmatic–hydrothermal polymetallic and structurally controlled orogenic gold deposits in the Qinling Orogen were evaluated by an integrated approach of tectonic division, factor analysis, and concentration–area (C–A) modeling. In order to limit the unique effects within different tectonic terranes on rocks and mineralization throughout the whole area, the evaluation was performed in the different parts of the Qinling Orogen, namely the southern North China Block, North and South Qinling Orogen, and the northwestern margin of the South China Block. Different element associations derived by factor analysis and the distributions of factor scores can roughly distinguish metallogenic signatures from geological backgrounds controlled by the regional lithology. Geochemical thresholds of different ore-forming elements were determined by C–A fractal modeling to distinguish anomalies of metals from their background, namely 2.7 ppb for Au, 220 ppm for Ag, 54 ppm for Pb, 160 ppm for Zn, 44 ppm for Cu and 1.4 ppm for Mo. The results suggest that metal anomalies of magmatic–hydrothermal deposits are generally characterized by Cu(–Mo–Au) and Ag–Pb–Zn, with circular or irregular spatial distribution, which can be distinguished within individual tectonic units by factor analysis and C–A fractal modeling. However, these methods were less effective in locating orogenic gold deposits, which are characterized by linear anomaly patterns. A new method, named lineament density, is thus proposed here to characterize linear structures concentration of faults, cleavage and fracture and its relationship with metal anomalies. This proposed method proves to be effective through the prediction-area (P-A) plot and, thus, it was applied successfully to locate anomalies associated with orogenic gold deposits. This study highlights that magmatic–hydrothermal polymetallic and orogenic gold deposits have contrasting anomaly patterns, which should be delineated by specifically suitable exploration methods or a combination of suitable methods.

Relation Between the Characteristics of Magnetic Susceptibilities of Altered Rocks and Gold Mineralization in the Qianhe Gold Deposit,henan

Abstract:The Qianhe gold deposit, Henan, is of tectonic alteration type. In this deposit, orebodies show gradational contact relationships with wall rocks with a vague boundary, but there is distinct difference in magnetic susceptibility among orebodies, wall rocks and various types of altered rocks. Systematic susceptibility measurements were made of altered rocks in various levels and along exploratory lines of the Qianhe gold deposit using a WCL-1 portable contact magnetic susceptibility meter. The susceptibility values of various kinds of typical altered rocks are in decreasing order as follows: chloritized rocks (Ch) → silicified-chloritized rocks (Si+Ch) → chloritized-silicified rocks (Ch+Si) → K-feldspathized rocks (Kf) → silicified (Si) → pyritized-phyllic rocks (Py+Se+Si). Correlation analysis of the magnetic susceptibilities of altered rocks and degrees of gold mineralization indicates that there is a negative correlation trend between them. Profiles of magnetic susceptibilities of altered andesite along lines 78 and 83 and a vertical longitudinal projection map of magnetic susceptibilities and gold grade isolines in the ore district have been constructed, and the direction for looking for ore deposits at depth in the ore district has been predicted preliminarily.

Abstract:We describe a three-dimensional electrical exploration system, and its use in carrying out a three-dimensional survey on a polymetallic deposit located in China's Gansu Province. A time-domain-induced polarization method, along with a controlled-source audiomagnetotelluric method, was used to survey the same station points for comparison. Then, a three-dimensional inversion based on the incomplete Gauss-Newton method (for time-domain-induced polarization) and a nonlinear conjugate gradient (for controlled-source audiomagnetotelluric) method were developed and applied in order to model the data sets. Four subsurface targets were mapped by the three-dimensional electrical exploration method. A strong correlation was found between the zones of the revealed ore-bearing anomalies and the geological setting. Using the results of the three-dimensional electrical exploration, we revealed the spatial distribution of the ore-bearing stratum, as well as the relationship between the ore bodies and the stratum. The results potentially provided evidence for future interpretations of deep geological structures, along with evaluations of mineral resources.
Hidden deposit exploration using the tectono-geochemistry method in the western Xicheng ore field, China

Abstract:Geochemical anomalies involve complex geological and geochemical processes. Integrating metallogenic processes into the interpretation of geochemical data can promote mineral exploration. In this study, 3080 subsamples were collected from the western Xicheng ore field and combined into 1312 composite samples using the tectono-geochemistry method. Nineteen elements were analyzed for each composite sample. Factor analysis based on the CLR-transformed data yielded four factors, including the Ag–Sb–Hg–Pb–Au–(B–Ba) association of F1, Zn–Cd–Pb association of F2, Bi–Sn–(Au–As) association of F3, and W–Sn–(Cu) association of F4. Thresholds of each factor were obtained using the concentration–number (C–N) fractal model. Six targets were delineated based on the factor anomaly maps, and one Pb–Zn and two Au deposits were discovered in Targets I and II, respectively. These discoveries and the good spatial correspondence between known deposits and anomalies provide compelling evidence for the effectiveness of the tectono-geochemistry method in the study area. More importantly, a model for the genetic relationship between geochemical anomalies and metallogenesis was constructed. The late tectonic-magmatic-hydrothermal transformation dominated the geochemical pattern in the study area. The degree of interaction between the Au-rich magmatic-hydrothermal fluids and SEDEX-style Pb–Zn mineralizations yielded leakage halos with various elemental assemblages. In addition, W–Sn anomalies may serve as auxiliary exploration indicators for Au mineralizations.

Intrusion-related orogenic gold deposit in the East Kunlun belt, NW China: A multiproxy investigation

Abstract:The Wulonggou gold district is one of the most important gold producers of the East Kunlun metallogenic belt in China. Due to its complex geological background and limited investigations, the age of mineralization and ore-forming process remain unclear. Here, we focus on the Yanjingou gold deposit which is the largest and most typical deposit in the Wulonggou gold district, with a view to investigate the metallogenic mechanism and timing of ore formation with a view to evaluate the ore-forming processes and sources through a comprehensive study of the ore mineralogy, monazite and zircon U-Pb dating, in situ trace element analysis and mapping, and in situ S isotopes. Our results show that the magmatism and mineralization were coeval, during 239 Ma and 244 Ma in the Middle Triassic. Four stages of mineralization are identified with distinct textures, mineral assemblages, trace element characteristics and S isotopes. Stage 1 is represented by euhedral pyrite bearing quartz veins, which originated from deep metamorphic fluid, and was rarely affected by magmatic hydrothermal fluids. Stage 2 is characterized by the occurrence of abundant oriented arsenopyrite, which originated from the mixture of deep metamorphic fluid and magmatic hydrothermal fluid. Stage 3 is characterized by the occurrence of polymetallic sulfide of copper, with two generation of pyrite (stage 3 Py1 and Py2). Stage 3 Py1 formed from magmatic hydrothermal fluids whereas Py2 originated from deep metamorphic fluid and was also slightly influenced by magmatic hydrothermal fluids. Stage 4 is represented by late calcite and pyrite combination, which originated from another stage of deep metamorphic fluid. Stage2 and 3 are the main gold mineralization stages, and Au has a close relationship with As, and an obvious inverse correlation with Co and Ni. Combined with the trace element characteristics, we infer that the denudation degree of the Yanjingou gold deposit is very shallow with good prospects for exploration. Through multi-proxy investigation of the different stages and types of pyrite, we postulate that the Yanjingou gold deposit is an orogenic gold deposit related to intrusive rocks formed during Middle Triassic compressional transformation.

Abstract:Based on the spectral test and analysis of rock samples from the gold-polymetallic mineralized districts of Mangya area, Qinghai Province, this paper has studied the spectral characteristics of the altered rocks and wall rocks related to gold-polymetallic mineralization as well as their spectral differences within the corresponding TM bands. On such a basis, a model is established for quantitative extraction of the remote sensing information on mineralized alterations and, in addition, the information concerning mineralized alteration is extracted by means of TM images.
Application of Comprehensive Electromagnetic Study in Deep Mineralization Mechanism -A Case Study of the Wuxi Polymetallic Ore Deposit, South Anhui

Abstract:The Wuxi polymetallic ore deposit which lies between the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River polymetallic metallogenic belt and South China metallogenic belt, is a new prospecting area in the Jiangnan orogen. This article is trying to study the mineralization mechanism in the deep subsurface of this area with the effective electromagnetic integrated exploration. For a new prospecting area, the collection of regional geological and geophysical background is very important. Geological data in this area is collected, which permits to analyze the regional metallogenic background. The physical property of the main rock types exposed in this area is measured in the laboratory. On the basis of these results three electromagnetic field measurements are carried out. By the measurements of three kinds of geophysical methods: ground precise magnetic survey, induced polarization and controlled source audio magnetotelluric method (CSAMT), the distribution characteristics of magnetic susceptibility, polarization and resistivity are studied, to bound mineralization possibilities and possible ore body position and depth range together. Based on the results of the geophysical studies, combined with geological and geochemical data, the mineralization dynamics model of the study area is built and then the mineralization mechanism is suggested. Drillings are deployed according to all these results. Drilling results prove the presence of strong alteration, mineralization and porphyry alteration at depth in the study area, which is consistent with the judgment of the CSAMT results. The consistency of drilling and geophysical results fully demonstrate the important role of the integrated electromagnetic method in the discovery and prediction of porphyry type polymetallic deposits. Meanwhile, it confirms the similarity between South China metallogenic belt and the mineralization belt formed by the subduction, thus promoting mineralization geological studies throughout South China.

Abstract:Numerous Cr-bearing ultramafic rock masses with high ore-prospecting potential are distributed around Luobusha,the largest chromite deposit in China.The Zetang rock mass was selected to conduct profile probing using gravimetric,magnetic and magnetotelluric methods.The results show that the Zetang rock mass was cut into several parts by approximately NS-trending faults,with the west parts moving farther northward than the east ones and distributed in NWW directions on the whole.The magnetic anomalies in the mass were caused by the magnetite resulting from the serpentinization and the residual magnetization when the rock mass was formed,and such magnetic anomalies indicate the limits of the superficial part of the rock mass.The gravity anomalies reveal that there are high-density bodies existing locally in the mass,which accord with the magnetic anomalies,and the outcropped ore spots at the earth's surface are mostly distributed within the limits.The surface layer of the mass is a thin high-resistance layer,with a thickness of at least one hundred meters in general,and the maximum thickness of the high-resistance body reaches 1.5 km in the middle section of the mass profile but its area is not large.Under the thin high-resistance bodies,there is a thin low-resistance layer.Both sides of the profile are dominated by high-resistance bodies,but the middle section contains quite a few low-resistance bodies,which are connected with the low-resistance bodies in the deep part at the depth of 5 –25 km and thus belong to the low-resistance bodies in the middle crust.It is inferred that these low-resistance bodies were caused by partial melting,suggesting that there probably existed passages for the upward migration of mantle-derived materials.Through summarizing the characteristics of various geophysical fields,it is thought that the sectors with more local gravity anomalies and low-resistance body anomalies in a magnetic anomaly area are most favorable for further detailed exporation and ore-prospecting work.
Crustal Architecture and Metallogeny Associated with the Paleo-Tethys Evolution in the Eastern Kunlun Orogenic Belt, Northern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Eastern Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB) in the Northern Tibet Plateau hosts a wide variety of metal deposits related to the Late Paleozoic to Mesozoic magmatism. In this study, we investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of the Late Paleozoic to Mesozoic granitic rocks and associated metal deposits in the EKOB and provide a comprehensive compilation of the geochronological, geochemical and isotopic data on these rocks. We compute regional zircon Hf isotope and crustal thickness maps from the data, based on which a comprehensive model is proposed involving subduction (ca. 270-240 Ma), continental collision (ca. 240-224 Ma), and post-collisional extension (ca. 224-200 Ma) for the Late Paleozoic to Mesozoic Paleo-Tethys evolution in the EKOB.Zircon Hf isotopic and crustal thickness mapping of Late Paleozoic to Mesozoic magmatic rocks was carried out to evaluate their spatio-temporal and genetic links with the regional metallogeny. The polymetallic Fe-skarn and porphyry Cu (Mo) deposits in the EKOB are located above the Moho uplift region, featuring a comparatively thin crust. Granites associated with porphyry Cu (Mo) and polymetallic Fe skarn mineralization are commonly characterized by high eHf(t) and younger TDMc values, whereas granite related to Cu-Mo-Sn skarn deposits exhibit more variable eHf(t) values, TDMc ages, and the crust thickness, which suggest that more crustal materials contributed to the formation of Cu-Mo-Sn skarn deposits than those for porphyry Cu (Mo) and polymetallic Fe skarn mineralization. In contrast, vein-type Au deposits are located primarily where the Moho surface displays a depression, i.e., where the continental crust is relatively thick. The magmatic rocks associated with Au mineralization are characterized by low eHf(t) and high TDMc values, representing reworked ancient crustal components, similar to those associated with porphyry Mo and epithermal Ag-Pb-Zn-(Au) deposits. Abstract:Gold geochemical anomalies and the structure has closely relationship in Liutun region, the structure has a control function for Gold metallogenic.Since the 1990s, the mining activities was on and off in this area, there were mining activitiesin the first half of 2011, it was terminated for deep mineralization decrease.This paper explains gold possibility occurrence on the bottom that Liutun region distribution characteristics of the gold mineralization, and predict characteristics for deep mineralization.To show in the mine geological characteristics is clearly, it points the two ore-section : Jintun and Liutun ore section. The author thinks that it is gold mineralization favorable positions in intersection part of structure and vein rocks of north east, ore body conforms to wave distribution theory within the structure in nearly eastwest; According to orebody distribution and element geochemical characteristics, it has the possibility of occurrence mineral in the deep.

Abstract:The Nuocang Cu polymetallic district is located in western Gangdese, close to the south of the Luobadui–Milashan fault zone. A large number of metal deposits with the potential to be prospected, such as Chagele, Zhalong, Longgen, and Sangmola, have been found near this district. To further isolate the target prospecting area, we used a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (pXRF) to conduct an in situ 1:10,000 soil pedogeochemical survey. The results show that the use of a pXRF combined with the geological connotation method (GCM) can accurately delineate the anomalies related to mineralization and highlight “weak” and “small” anomalies. It was also shown to effectively shorten the working cycle and ensure the continuity and timeliness of field work. Through sizing tests, the analysis of −10~+60 mesh soil samples achieved the best anomaly delineation effect. By studying the supra-ore, near-ore, sub-ore halo, and Th/U, the degree of denudation and the oxidation-reduction environment of the deposit were judged to be moderate. Ultimately, depending on the target area delineated by the pXRF, six Cu-Pb-Zn orebodies were uncapped by five exploratory trenches, which proved the potentiality of the Cu-Pb-Zn polymetallic epithermal deposit controlled by minor faults in Central Nuocang.

Abstract:A detailed study of the geological and electromagnetic structure of the peripheral area of Liguo iron mine, eastern China, is presented to assess the location and amount of iron ore. This study targeted a strong magnetic anomaly in the Lixi area, west of Liguo, which is located in the northern Yuhuai platform-fold-belt between the Sihu-Jing'an depression and the Xuzhou complex anticline. We carried out a series of audiomagnetotellurics (AMT) prospecting lines to delineate the deposit and assess its potential ore reserve. An integrated analysis of the magnetic anomaly, AMT resistivity, and drill core identified the areas with the great potential for iron ore mineralization. Comparation between magnetic anomaly and the resistivities can reduce the variability of singular geophysics method. The results provide important geophysical evidence regarding the potential iron-ore resources of the Liguo area.

Abstract:This paper describes the discovery of porphyry Cu–Au ore bodies (No. 2 and No. 3) in Xiongcun, Tibet, China, through the investigation of stream sediments, soils and rocks. The study area (Xiongcun), located in the city of Xigaze, has a complex topography due to its complicated geological background. The Xiongcun No. 1 ore body will soon be mined, 15 years after its discovery. However, recent research on stream sediments, soils and rocks around the No. 1 ore body has revealed notable Cu anomalies on the periphery. With the successful application of exploratory geochemistry data in the anomaly locations, the No. 2 and No. 3 ore bodies have been revealed. The ore reserves of the No. 2 and No. 3 ore bodies are estimated to reach 1.64 million tons of Cu, more than 80 tons of Au and 200 tons of Ag. We expect that our findings will not only enhance the understanding of the reanalysis of anomalies surrounding the discovered deposits but also contribute to the evaluation of the ore-prospecting potential of this plateau region.
