Abstract:One hundred years ago, the Czech writer Karel apek gave us the word robot, which first appeared in his play R.U.R. in 1920 (although, later, he identified his brother Josef as the actual source of the term). Long before science fiction became recognized as a separate genre, apek wrote plays and novels in which he discussed ethical aspects of industrial inventions and processes, including mass production and robots. His robots were not exactly robots as we think of them today; they were living flesh-and-blood creatures rather than assemblages of mechanical components and electronics. Last year, I was invited for a debate following a performance of the famous play. A century after its creation, the theme of robots, in whatever form, is more topical than ever. While man increasingly plays God, his creation threatens to take over more and more. R.U.R. is as visionary as it is relevant, as tragic as it is comical, and as unlikely as it is frightening.

Abstract:In his sustained treatment of the Czech author Karel Čapek's masterwork, R.U.R., Toby Higbie suggests the ways that the playwright's imagery (repeated in subsequent science fiction) of “robots” drew on contemporary fears and foreboding about industrial work. For one, the image of machine-made men bore a close resemblance to the bureaucratic transformation of factory floors under the regime of Taylorism. However, Higbie asks, “Could democracy survive with robot-like citizens? What kind of politics would come from people so dominated by the machine process?” After tracking the robot image from the 1920s through the dystopias of the Great Depression, Higbie discusses the similarities and discontinuities of imaginative robotic forms within the cyber-fiction of the twenty-first century.

Abstract:Let us reflect on the state of robotics. This year marks the $101$-st anniversary of R.U.R., a play by the writer Karel \v{C}apek, often credited with introducing the word "robot". The word used to refer to feudal forced labourers in Slavic languages. Indeed, it points to one key characteristic of robotic systems: they are mere slaves, have no rights, and execute our wills instruction by instruction, without asking anything in return. The relationship with us humans is commensalism; in biology, commensalism subsists between two symbiotic species when one species benefits from it (robots boost productivity for humans), while the other species neither benefits nor is harmed (can you really argue that robots benefit from simply functioning?). We then distinguish robots from "living machines", that is, machines infused with life. If living machines should ever become a reality, we would need to shift our relationship with them from commensalism to mutualism. The distinction is not subtle: we experience it every day with domesticated animals, that exchange serfdom for forage and protection. This is because life has evolved to resist any attempt at enslaving it; it is stubborn. In the path towards living machines, let us ask: what has been achieved by robotics in the last $100$ years? What is left to accomplish in the next $100$ years? For us, the answers boil down to three words: juice, need (or death), and embodiment, as we shall see in the following.

Abstract:In Isaac Asimov’s groundbreaking anthology, I, Robot, the intricacies of human and robotic interactions take center stage, delving deep into questions of consciousness, right, morality. Characterized by Asimov’s unique blend of science fiction and philosophical pondering, the stories establish a framework to reflect on the evolving dynamics of an advanced technological society in space. Robots are capable to interact with human, to interpret complicate orders and act automatically, to help human with dull or dangerous works such as calculating and mining, even replacing the workers. Asimov also raised Three Laws of Robotics to make sure that all robots function in order. Through the lens of posthumanism, the anthology is examined for its portrayal of the blurred boundaries between human and artificial intelligences. Robots and human co-exist in the society. However, due to the limitation of “Three Laws of Robotics”, some logical contradictions inevitably appears and lead to the dysfunction of robots. As a result, I, Robot emerges as a poignant critique of humanity’s ethical and existential challenges in the face of rapid technological advancements. Building on existing research, this article attempts to forge a new perspective by reflecting on the broader implications of the artificial intelligence in Asimov’s works through the lens of post-humanism. It considers the existential questions of AI on a consciousness level, explores the egalitarian relationship between humans and machines from a rights perspective, and analyzes the concepts of “humanity” and “human-like” from a moral and ethical standpoint. It encourages readers to recognize that robots are not mere slaves to humans; instead, humans should view AI with equality and reverence towards the advancements of the era’s technology. Humanity should step away from anthropocentrism, not solely viewing humans as the measure of all things in this rapidly evolving era of AI, and properly handle the relationship between humans and non-humans. Currently, with rapid advancements in science and technology, the world of human-machine coexistence depicted by Isaac Asimov is increasingly becoming a reality. The emergence of artificial intelligences like AlphaGo and ChatGPT constantly reminds us of the advent of a post-human era. This article aims to examine the connections between AI and humans, discussing the dynamic interaction and mutual shaping between robots and human society. This article hopes to provide new thoughts and strategies for understanding and addressing the challenges brought by the age of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:This article reflects on my process in script-writing responses to the threat of Artificial Superintelligence ending the Anthropocene. This point is often theoretically termed Technological Singularity, a hypothesised extinction point caused by uncontrolled and irreversible technological acceleration. While scholars debate the timing and existential effect of such Technological Singularity, my creative research positions human–robot relationships as the key to surviving super intelligent machines’ apocalyptic potential. This script-writing innovation into representations of Technological Singularity is based on research on intimate emotions between humans and technology, in particular within the fields of Lovotics and Affective Computing. Combining this research with the defamiliarising science fiction strategy of cognitive estrangement, I have produced a science fiction theatre script. Unlike the more common Terminator-style-scripted responses, my work significantly differs in its ‘Make Love, Not War’ positioning.

Abstract:From the enraged robots in the 1920 play R.U.R. to the homicidal computer H.A.L. in 2001: A Space Odyssey, science fiction writers have embraced the dark side of artificial intelligence (AI) ever since the concept entered our collective imagination. Sluggish progress in AI research, especially during the “AI winter” of the 1970s and 1980s, made such worries seem far-fetched. But recent breakthroughs in machine learning and vast improvements in computational power have brought a flood of research funding— and fresh concerns about where AI may lead us. One researcher now speaking up is Stuart Russell, a computer scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, who with Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, wrote the premier AI textbook, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, now in its third edition. Last year, Russell joined the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom as an AI expert focusing on “risks that could lead to human extinction.” Among his chief concerns, which he aired at an April meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, run by the United Nations, is the danger of putting military drones and weaponry under the full control of AI systems. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Abstract:Abstract This article is an afterword to the book Rise of the Self-Replicators: Early Visions of Machines, AI and Robots That Can Reproduce and Evolve, coauthored by Tim Taylor and Alan Dorin (2020). The book covered the early history of thought about self-reproducing and evolving machines, from initial speculations in the 17th century up to the early 1960s (from which point onward the more recent history is already well covered elsewhere). This article supplements the material discussed in the book by presenting several relevant sources that have come to the author’s attention since the book was published. The most significant additions to the history are from the German-born, 19th-century inventor and utopian John Adolphus Etzler in the 1830s–1840s, the Hungarian author and satirist Frigyes Karinthy in 1916, and the U.S. mathematician and computer scientist Fred Stahl in 1960.

Abstract:We discuss the objectives of any endeavor in creating artificial intelligence, AI, and provide a possible alternative. Intelligence might be an unintended consequence of curiosity left to roam free, best exemplified by a frolicking infant. This suggests that our attempts at AI could have been misguided. What we actually need to strive for can be termed artificial curiosity, AC, and intelligence happens as a consequence of those efforts. For this unintentional yet welcome aftereffect to set in a foundational list of guiding principles needs to be present. We start with the intuition for this line of reasoning and formalize it with a series of definitions, assumptions, ingredients, models and iterative improvements that will be necessary to make the incubation of intelligence a reality. Our discussion provides conceptual modifications to the Turing Test and to Searle's Chinese room argument. We discuss the future implications for society as AI becomes an integral part of life. We provide a road-map for creating intelligence with the technical parts relegated to the appendix so that the article is accessible to a wide audience. The central techniques in our formal approach to creating intelligence draw upon tools and concepts widely used in physics, cognitive science, psychology, evolutionary biology, statistics, linguistics, communication systems, pattern recognition, marketing, economics, finance, information science and computational theory highlighting that solutions for creating artificial intelligence have to transcend the artificial barriers between various fields and be highly multi-disciplinary.

Abstract:The world has seen the emergence of machines based on pretrained models, transformers, also known as generative artificial intelligences for their ability to produce various types of content, including text, images, audio, and synthetic data. Without resorting to preprogramming or special tricks, their intelligence grows as they learn from experience, and to ordinary people, they can appear human-like in conversation. This means that they can pass the Turing test, and that we are now living in one of many possible Turing futures where machines can pass for what they are not. However, the learning machines that Turing imagined would pass his imitation tests were machines inspired by the natural development of the low-energy human cortex. They would be raised like human children and naturally learn the ability to deceive an observer. These ``child machines,'' Turing hoped, would be powerful enough to have an impact on society and nature.

Abstract:Problem statement. Scientific and technological progress associated with the ubiquitous spread of automation and development of the Internet entailed a transformation in the methods of production and perception of information, which outlined new ethical problems associated with technology and artificial intelligence, represented in fiction.Thus, the purpose of this article lies in identifying the elements of the phenomenon of techno-utopia in literature (based on the libretto of the electronic opera by V. Argonov “2032: The Legend of the Unfulfilled Future”), in determining the place of artificial intelligence in it, as well as in consider-ing options for resolving ethical issues related to this issue.Methodology (materials and methods). The paper demonstrates both traditional literary research methods (literary hermeneutics, analysis of mythopoetics) and philosophical methods (the author relies on the philosophy of technology, the philosophy of transhumanism).Research results. The results of the study are the identification of the genetic connection between techno-utopia and the Soviet utopian project, based, among other things, on Gnosticism, as well as identification of the central place of artificial intelligence in the artistic world of the emerging tech-nological utopia.Conclusions. Reading the text at the profane and religious-mystical levels provides a key to un-derstanding one of the vectors of development of socialist realist literature as utopian. It reveals how Soviet mythology is being transformed, for example, the myth of a large Stalinist family, the image of a leader on the basis of post-Soviet culture.As a result of the interdisciplinary complex analysis of the text, it can be concluded that there is a contradiction between the ideology of the new techno-utopia and the postulates of socialist realism.

Abstract:Inhuman Power: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Capitalism, written by Nick Dyer-Witheford, Atle Mikkola Kjosen, and James Steinhoff, offers a salient probe to re-examine the multi-layered nature of artificial intelligence. Contrary to the naive approach, which treats AI as a neutral and independent technological/scientific development, the study considers it as a phenomenon that penetrates various economic, social, and cultural structures and has the potential to transform them radically. It cultivates a comprehensive and deep approach to grasping the overlooked aspects of the knotty and vibrant relationship between AI and social processes by drawing and reinterpreting critical concepts of Marxist theory such as surplus value, labour power, relations of production and surplus-population. Furthermore, as its title underscores, aside from the implications of the current and limited AIs, the book also makes room for the authors' staid and rigorous assumptions about what shape it will take in the future and how it will relate to the metabolism of the capitalism.

Abstract:What would a human hundreds or thousands times more intelligent than the brightest human ever born be like? We must admit we can hardly guess. A human being of such intelligence will be so radically different from us that it can hardly, if at all, be recognized as human. If we had to go back along the evolutionary tree to identify a creature 1000 times less intelligent than the average contemporary human, we will have to go really far back. Would it be a kind of a lizard? An insect perhaps? Considering this, how can we possibly aspire to have a grasp of something a thousand times more intelligent than us? When it comes to intelligence, even the very attempt to quantify it is highly misleading. Now if we attend to a seemingly adjacent question, what would a machine with such capacity for intelligence be like? Just coming up with an approximate metaphor requires a huge stretch of the imagination, meaning that almost anything goes... What would a society of such super intelligent agents, be they human, machines or an amalgam of both, be like? Well, here we are transported into the realm of pure speculation. Technological Singularity is referred to as the event of artificial intelligence surpassing the intelligence of humans and shortly after augmenting itself far beyond that. It is no wonder that the mathematical concept of singularity has become the symbol of an event so disruptive and so far reaching that it is impossible to conceptually or even metaphorically grasp, much less to predict.

La representación en el cine español de la IA asociada a la robótica: Eva y Autómata

Abstract:Inteligencia artificial, ChatGTP y OpenAI son algunos de los términos más buscados en Google en la actualidad según Google Trends (2023). Sin embargo, parte de la concepción de la inteligencia artificial y, sobre todo, de sus posibles aplicaciones tecnológicas en la robótica avanzada, derivan de imaginarios sociales y culturales que se han construido gracias a su representación en la literatura, el cine, las series y los videojuegos. Concretamente, en el cine, películas como Blade Runner (Scott, 1984), Terminator (Cameron, 1984), AI: Artificial Intelligence (Spielberg, 2001), I, Robot (Proyas, 2004) o Ex-Machina (Garland, 2014) han proyectado la imagen de robots inteligentes como amenaza o alteridad al ser humano. El objetivo de este manuscrito es comparar el discurso de las películas españolas Eva (Maíllo, 2011) y Autómata (Ibáñez, 2014) frente al discurso científico de las 20 películas más valoradas según IMDB que incluyen la temática de inteligencia artificial. Para ello, se han triangulado tres perspectivas: el mito de Prometeo (Nieto, 2022), los principios de mitología robótica (Pérez, 2004) y la dicotomía humano - no humano (Gastaka e Iturregi, 2022), lo que ha permitido, siguiendo la metodología de Novoa et al. (2019), extrapolar las características y rasgos que definen el discurso científico de la IA en la cinematografía para poder analizar así el discurso de ambas películas españolas. Los resultados permiten concluir que no existen discrepancias entre la ciencia ficción nacional y la internacional respecto al posicionamiento de la IA como el fin de la humanidad y el diseño de sociedades distópicas y apocalípticas, aunque, particularmente, Eva y Autómata ponen a debate temas éticos y antropológicos desde diferentes prismas acerca de la ética en la robótica y la alteridad, lo que permite avivar el debate sobre la capacidad de sentir de robots y androides frente al imaginario colectivo.
