Abstract:In this Review, we aim to provide an updated summary of the research related to hollow micro- and nanostructures, covering both their synthesis and their applications. After a brief introduction to the definition and classification of the hollow micro-/nanostructures, we discuss various synthetic strategies that can be grouped into three major categories, including hard templating, soft templating, and self-templating synthesis. For both hard and soft templating strategies, we focus on how different types of templates are generated and then used for creating hollow structures. At the end of each section, the structural and morphological control over the product is discussed. For the self-templating strategy, we survey a number of unconventional synthetic methods, such as surface-protected etching, Ostwald ripening, the Kirkendall effect, and galvanic replacement. We then discuss the unique properties and niche applications of the hollow structures in diverse fields, including micro-/nanocontainers and reactors, optical properties and applications, magnetic properties, energy storage, catalysis, biomedical applications, environmental remediation, and sensors. Finally, we provide a perspective on future development in the research relevant to hollow micro-/nanostructures.

Abstract:A wide variety of nanoscale hollow spheres can be obtained via a microemulsion approach. This includes oxides (e.g., ZnO, TiO₂, SnO₂, AlO(OH), La(OH)₃), sulfides (e.g., Cu₂S, CuS) as well as elemental metals (e.g., Ag, Au). All hollow spheres are realized with outer diameters of 10-60 nm, an inner cavity size of 2-30 nm and a wall thickness of 2-15 nm. The microemulsion approach allows modification of the composition of the hollow spheres, fine-tuning their diameter and encapsulation of various ingredients inside the resulting "nanocontainers". This review summarizes the experimental conditions of synthesis and compares them to other methods of preparing hollow spheres. Moreover, the structural characterization and selected properties of the as-prepared hollow spheres are discussed. The latter is especially focused on container-functionalities with the encapsulation of inorganic salts (e.g., KSCN, K₂S₂O₈, KF), biomolecules/bioactive molecules (e.g., phenylalanine, quercetin, nicotinic acid) and fluorescent dyes (e.g., rhodamine, riboflavin) as representative examples.

Abstract:Hollow nanomaterials present an important family of nanostructures with low mass density, high porosity, large reaction surface area and good strain accommodation and have great application potentials in many fields. In this article, we reviewed our recent studies on the synthesis and property studies of hollow nanostructures including hollow nanospheres, one-dimensional nanotubes/nanoboxes, two-dimensional hollow structures and three-dimensional hollow superstructures. These hollow materials were demonstrated to have great applications in catalysis, energy and antibacterials due to the special advantages of the hollow structures.

Abstract:The development and investigation of innovative nanomaterials stand poised to advance technological progress and meet the contemporary demand for efficient, environmentally friendly, and intelligent products. Hollow nanostructures (HNS), characterized by their hollow architecture, exhibit diverse properties such as expansive specific surface area, low density, high drug-carrying capacity, and customizable structures. These elaborated structures, encompass nanospheres, nanoboxes, rings, cubes, and nanowires, have wide-ranging applications in biomedicine, materials chemistry, food industry, and environmental science. Herein, HNS and their cutting-edge synthesis methods, including solvothermal methods, liquid-interface assembly methods, and the self-templating methods are discussed in-depth. Meanwhile, the potential applications of HNS in food and biomedicine such as food packing, biosensor, and drug delivery over the past three years are summarized, together with a prospective view of future research directions and challenges. This review will offer new insights into designing next generation of hollow nanomaterials for food and biomedicine applications.

Abstract:Inorganic hollow spheres have attracted considerable interest due to their singular properties and wide range of potential applications. In this critical review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the preparation and applications of inorganic hollow spheres. We first discuss the syntheses of inorganic hollow spheres by use of polymers, inorganic nonmetals, metal-based hard templates, small-molecule emulsion, surfactant micelle-based soft-templates, and the template-free approach. For each method, a critical comment is given based on our knowledge and related research experience. We go on to discuss some important applications of inorganic hollow spheres in 0D, 2D, and 3D arrays. We conclude this review with some perspectives on the future research and development of inorganic hollow spheres (235 references).

Abstract:This paper reviews the progress made recently in synthesis and applications of spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with multilevel (hierarchical) structures. The spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with hierarchical structures are classified into four main structural categories that include (1) hollow mesoporous spheres, (2) core-in-(hollow porous shell) spheres, (3) hollow spheres with multiple porous shells and (4) hierarchically porous spheres. Due to the complex structures and being focused on spherical silica micro/nanomaterials, some novel methods based on the combination of two routine methods or two surfactants, and some special synthetic strategies are proposed to produce the spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with hierarchical structures. Compared with the same-sized solid, porous or hollow silica spheres, these fantastic spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with hierarchical structures exhibit enhanced properties which may enable them to be used in broad and promising applications as ideal scaffolds (carriers) for biological, medical, and catalytic applications.

Abstract:Hollow periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) with molecularly homogeneous organic functional groups in the inorganic pore walls are attracting more and more attention due to the high surface areas, tunable pore sizes, low densities, large cavities in the center, permeable thin shells, and versatile organic-inorganic hybrid frameworks, which make them promising in a variety of applications including adsorption, catalysis, drug delivery, and nanotheranostics. Herein, recent advances in the synthesis of hollow PMO nanoparticles with various organic moieties are summarized, and the mechanism and new insights of synthesis approaches, including hard-core templating methods, liquid-interface assembly methods, and the interfacial reassembly and transformation strategy are discussed in-depth. Meanwhile, the design principles, properties, and synthetic strategies for some smart hollow architectures such as multishelled hollow PMOs, yolk-shell structured PMOs, and nonspherical hollow PMOs are discussed. Moreover, the typical applications of hollow PMO nanomaterials as nanoreactors for chemical transformations and nanoplatforms for biomedicine are summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the future development of hollow PMOs are described.

Abstract:In the last few decades, microspheres and microsphere-based scaffolds have demonstrated great potential in translational medicine. Various materials, including natural polymers, synthetic polymers, bioactive ceramics, and their composites, have been fabricated into microspheres for bone-defect repair. In this review, we summarize the specific steps and research progress of various fabrication methods for microspheres and identify the main limitations of existing techniques. The appropriate materials and surface-modification strategies that can increase the biological properties of microspheres are also described. Finally, we discuss the key application of microsphere-functionalized scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. We expect that this review will enable more future investigations that focus on the field of microsphere tissue engineering, and thus advance the development of fabrication technology and facilitate the application of microspheres for bone regeneration.

Abstract:Synthesis of monodisperse hollow silica nanospheres, especially using a hard template route, has been shown to be successful, but a high yield is needed for this strategy to be used on an industrial scale. On the other hand, there is a research gap in the synthesis of hollow silica microspheres due to the popularity and easiness of the synthesis of silica nanospheres despite the larger spheres being beneficial in some fields. In this review, current trends in producing hollow silica nanospheres using hard templates, especially polystyrene, are briefly presented. Soft templates have also been used to make highly polydisperse hollow silica spheres, and complex designs have improved polydispersity. The effect of the main parameters on the coating is presented here to provide a basic understanding of the interactions between the silica and template surface in the absence or presence of surfactants. Surface charge, surface modification, parameters in the sol–gel method and interaction between the silica and templates need to be further improved to have a uniform coating and better control over the size, dispersity, wall thickness and porosity. As larger organic templates will have lower surface energy, the efficiency of the micro sphere synthesis needs to be improved. Control over the physical structure of hollow silica spheres will open up many opportunities for them to be extensively used in fields ranging from waste removal to energy storage.

Abstract:Colloidal silica spheres with controllable large through-holes and mesopores on the shell were synthesized by using polystyrene (PS) spheres as a hard template and cationic surfactant hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a soft template. Through modulating the synthetic conditions, including the volume ratio of ethanol (EtOH)/water, the amount of ammonia hydroxide, and the dosage of CTAB, SiO2 spheres can transform among hollow structure, through-hole structure, and no large pore structure. The investigation suggests that the hydrolysis rate of the silica source and the interaction strength between the PS sphere template and SiO2 may determine the large pore structure of the final product. The moderate hydrolysis rate of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and strong interaction between the PS sphere template and SiO2 is conductive to the formation of large through-holes in SiO2 spheres. To further investigate the pore structure of through-holes of SiO2 spheres, the lysozyme (Lz) was selected as a model molecule for adsorption experiments. The Lz adsorption experiments show that SiO2 spheres with through-hole structure exhibit a much faster adsorption rate than SiO2 spheres with hollow structure and higher adsorption capacity than SiO2 with no large pore structure. Such a behavior could find interesting applications in the fields that require a fast-loading characteristic.

Abstract:An overview of microspheres manufactured for use in biomedical applications based on recent literature is presented in this review. Different types of glasses (i.e. silicate, borate, and phosphates), ceramics and polymer-based microspheres (both natural and synthetic) in the form of porous , non-porous and hollow structures that are either already in use or are currently being investigated within the biomedical area are discussed. The advantages of using microspheres in applications such as drug delivery, bone tissue engineering and regeneration, absorption and desorption of substances, kinetic release of the loaded drug components are also presented. This review also reports on the preparation and characterisation methodologies used for the manufacture of these microspheres. Finally, a brief summary of the existing challenges associated with processing these microspheres which requires further research and development are presented.

Abstract:In the past decade, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have attracted more and more attention for their potential biomedical applications. With their tailored mesoporous structure and high surface area, MSNs as drug delivery systems (DDSs) show significant advantages over traditional drug nanocarriers. In this review, we overview the recent progress in the synthesis of MSNs for drug delivery applications. First, we provide an overview of synthesis strategies for fabricating ordered MSNs and hollow/rattle-type MSNs. Then, the in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility and biotranslocation of MSNs are discussed in relation to their chemophysical properties including particle size, surface properties, shape, and structure. The review also highlights the significant achievements in drug delivery using mesoporous silica nanoparticles and their multifunctional counterparts as drug carriers. In particular, the biological barriers for nano-based targeted cancer therapy and MSN-based targeting strategies are discussed. We conclude with our personal perspectives on the directions in which future work in this field might be focused.

Abstract:Hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell were synthesized with the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polystyrene (PS) hollow spheres as dual templates. The key to this study is that the uneven surface of the template provides nucleation sites for mesoporous nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell. The final products with hierarchical mesopores can be obtained through a simple one-step approach.

Abstract:Morphology control is one of the most interesting issues in the research field of mesoporous materials. It plays a very important role in understanding the basic synthesis mechanism of the kind of materials. Moreover, the future applications of mesoporous materials are strongly depended on their tunable macroscopical morphologies. Mesoporous materials with spherical morphology are quite attractive due to the potential applications in macromolecular separations, drug deliveries, catalysis supports and template agents for photonic crystals. Researches on synthesis and properties of the materials have been carried out for nearly ten years. In this article, several synthetic methods for both siliceous and non-siliceous mesoporous spheres are reviewed, including solution self-assembly, aerosol spraying and hard templating route. The mechanism of self-assembly in solution system is provided and the rational controls for synthetic conditions are specifically discussed. With the viewpoint of applications, some examples are given in the aspects of bioseparations, drug delivery and catalysis. A short summary has listed some overviews for future developments.

Abstract:Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of hollow silica spheres with a narrow size distribution, uniform wall thickness, and a worm-like pore structure. The formation of these spheres was monitored by confocal laser scanning microscopy and dynamic light scattering. A model for the molecular build-up of these silica hollow spheres is derived from these data in combination with studies of the as-made particles by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, pore size analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. We further demonstrate that these spheres can be used for the encapsulation and subsequent release of different dye molecules.

Abstract:Ultrasmall mesoporous nanoparticles (<50 nm), a unique porous nanomaterial, have been widely studied in many fields in the last decade owing to the abundant advantages, involving rich mesopores, low density, high surface area, numerous reaction sites, large cavity space, ultrasmall size, etc. This paper presents a review of recent advances in the preparation, functionalization, and applications of ultrasmall inorganic mesoporous nanoparticles for the first time. The soft monomicelles-directed method, in contrast to the hard-template and template-free methods, is more flexible in the synthesis of mesoporous nanoparticles. This is because the amphiphilic micelle has tunable functional blocks, controlled molecule masses, configurations and mesostructures. Focus on the soft micelle directing method, monomicelles could be classified into four types, i.e., the Pluronic-type block copolymer monomicelles, laboratory-synthesized amphiphilic block copolymers monomicelles, the single-molecule star-shaped block copolymer monomicelles, and the small-molecule anionic/cationic surfactant monomicelles. This paper also reviews the functionalization of the inner mesopores and the outer surfaces, which includes constructing the yolkshell structures (encapsulated nanoparticles), anchoring the active components packed on the shell and building an asymmetric Janus architecture. Then, several representative applications, involving catalysis, energy storage, and biomedicines are presented. Finally, the prospects and challenges of controlled synthesis and large-scale applications of ultrasmall mesoporous nanoparticles in the future are foreseen.
One-Step Synthesis of Cagelike Hollow Silica Spheres with Large Through-Holes for Macromolecule Delivery.

Abstract:A facile, one-step method to prepare cagelike hollow silica nanospheres with large through-holes (HSNLs) using a lysozyme-assisted O/W miniemulsion technique is presented. The tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) xylene mixture forms oil droplets which are stabilized by the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), cosurfactant hexadecane (HD), and protein lysozyme. HSNLs (with diameter of 300-460 nm) with large through-holes (10-30 nm) were obtained directly after ultrasonic treatment and aging. Lysozyme can not only stabilize the oil/water interface, assist the hydrolysis of TEOS, and interact with silica particles to assemble into silica-lysozyme clusters but also contribute to the formation of through-holes due to its hydrophilicity variation at different pH conditions. A possible new mechanism called the interface desorption method is proposed to explain the formation of the through-holes. To confirm the effectiveness of large through-holes in delivering large molecules, bovine serum albumin (BSA, 21 x 4 x 14 nm(3)) was chosen as a model guest molecule; HSNLs showed much higher loading capacity compared with common hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres (HMSNs). The release of BSA can be well controlled by wrapping HSNLs with a heat-sensitive phase change material (1-tetradecanol). Cell toxicity was also conducted with a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay to roughly evaluate the feasibility of HSNLs in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Hollow silica is a special type of novel inorganic material with one or more cavities inside. In addition to the excellent properties as with its solid counterparts, hollow silica exhibits unique characteristics, such as low density, high specific surface and good adsorption performance. Researchers have developed many routes to prepare mono-dispersed hollow silica with regular morphology. However, most studies focused on hollow silica spheres, ignoring the structural superiority of other hollow structures. Template synthesis is highly prominent due to its flexibility and versatility. What's more, it is suitable for the preparation of hollow silica with various morphologies. In this article, the research progress of template synthesis was firstly provided. Then different morphologies of hollow silica were introduced, including hollow spheres, hollow tubes, hollow cubes, etc. To better demonstrate the advantages and potential value of hollow silica materials, their performance in diverse applications were discussed. Finally, some perspectives on the future research and development of hollow silica were put forward.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-transformation approach for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica hollow spheres with radially oriented mesochannels. The method is simple and facile, in which mesostructured silica spheres synthesized in a Stöber solution can spontaneously transform to hollow structure when they are incubated with water. The formation of the hollow structure does not require any sacrificial templates, emulsion droplets, or surface protective agents. The obtained mesoporous silica hollow spheres possess controllable diameter, tunable shell thickness, high specific surface area, and uniform mesopore. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that the formation of the hollow spheres undergoes a selective etching process in the inner section. 29Si NMR spectra and detailed reactions demonstrate that the solid-to-hollow transformation of the Stöber silica spheres in water is attributed to the difference in the degree of condensation of silica between their outer layer and inner section. Cytotoxicity and histological assays confirm that the obtained mesoporous silica hollow spheres possess good biocompatibility. Besides, the capability of the hollow spheres as contrast agents for untrasound imaging is conducted in vitro. Moreover, yolk–shell microspheres with a Fe3O4@nSiO2 core and a mesoporous silica shell are successfully prepared based on the facile self-transformation strategy, which provides a general method to create various yolk–shell structured multifunctional composites for different applications.

Abstract:Carbon-based hollow nanomaterials have recently become one of the hot research topics because of their unique structures, outstanding physicochemical properties and potential applications. The design and synthesis of novel carbon-based hollow nanomaterials have important scientific significance and wide application value. The recent researches on designing of synthesis, structure, function and application of carbon-based hollow nanomaterials are reviewed. The common synthesis strategies of carbon- based hollow nanomaterials are briefly introduced. It is described in detail about the structural designing, material functionalization and main applications of carbon-based hollow nanomaterials. At the end of this review, the current challenges as well as opportunities in the synthesis and application of carbon-based hollow nanomaterials are discussed.
