Abstract:Theoretical and computational chemistry aims to develop chemical theory and to apply numerical computation and simulation to reveal the mechanism behind complex chemical phenomena via quantum theory and statistical mechanics. Computation is the third pillar of scientific research together with theory and experiment. Computation enables scientists to test, discover, and build models/theories of the corresponding chemical phenomena. Theoretical and computational chemistry has been advanced to a new era due to the development of high-performance computational facilities and artificial intelligence approaches. The tendency to merge electronic structural theory with quantum chemical dynamics and statistical mechanics is of increasing interest because of the rapid development of on-the-fly dynamic simulations for complex systems plus low-scaling electronic structural theory. Another challenging issue lies in the transition from order to disorder, from thermodynamics to dynamics, and from equilibrium to non-equilibrium. Despite an increasingly rapid emergence of advances in computational power, detailed criteria for databases, effective data sharing strategies, and deep learning workflows have yet to be developed. Here, we outline some challenges and limitations of the current artificial intelligence approaches with an outlook on the potential future directions for chemistry in the big data era.

Abstract:This article has summarized the main academic communications from the forum titled as “Theoretical Chemistry in the Age of Quantum Computational Chemistry” which has been granted by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and held in Hefei on July 31, 2022. Firstly, the main characters of quantum-computational chemistry (QCC) have been introduced. And some current important challenges of the QCC are also pointed out. Secondly, we have mainly discussed the progress of the QCC in China and new research directions based on current noisy and future fault-tolerant quantum computing platforms. At the same time, in order to meet the major technical needs in future developments, some key scientific issues in this field are suggested in the next 5–10 years, and some strategic suggestions for strengthening the support of NSFC were proposed.

Abstract:The quantum computation of electronic energies can break the curse of dimensionality that plagues many-particle quantum mechanics. It is for this reason that a universal quantum computer has the potential to fundamentally change computational chemistry and materials science, areas in which strong electron correlations present severe hurdles for traditional electronic structure methods. Here we present a state-of-the-art analysis of accurate energy measurements on a quantum computer for computational catalysis, using improved quantum algorithms with more than an order of magnitude improvement over the best previous algorithms. As a prototypical example of local catalytic chemical reactivity we consider the case of a ruthenium catalyst that can bind, activate, and transform carbon dioxide to the high-value chemical methanol. We aim at accurate resource estimates for the quantum computing steps required for assessing the electronic energy of key intermediates and transition states of its catalytic cycle. In particular, we present quantum algorithms for double-factorized representations of the four-index integrals that can significantly reduce the computational cost over previous algorithms, and we discuss the challenges of increasing active space sizes to accurately deal with dynamical correlations. Abstract:As we begin to reach the limits of classical computing, quantum computing has emerged as a technology that has captured the imagination of the scientific world. While for many years, the ability to execute quantum algorithms was only a theoretical possibility, recent advances in hardware mean that quantum computing devices now exist that can carry out quantum computation on a limited scale. Thus, it is now a real possibility, and of central importance at this time, to assess the potential impact of quantum computers on real problems of interest. One of the earliest and most compelling applications for quantum computers is Feynman's idea of simulating quantum systems with many degrees of freedom. Such systems are found across chemistry, physics, and materials science. The particular way in which quantum computing extends classical computing means that one cannot expect arbitrary simulations to be sped up by a quantum computer, thus one must carefully identify areas where quantum advantage may be achieved. In this review, we briefly describe central problems in chemistry and materials science, in areas of electronic structure, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum dynamics that are of potential interest for solution on a quantum computer. We then take a detailed snapshot of current progress in quantum algorithms for ground-state, dynamics, and thermal-state simulation and analyze their strengths and weaknesses for future developments.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Harvesting Chemical Understanding with Machine Learning and Quantum Computers

Abstract:It is tenable to argue that nobody can predict the future with certainty, yet one can learn from the past and make informed projections for the years ahead. In this Perspective article, we overview the status of how theory and computation can be exploited to obtain chemical understanding from wave function theory and density functional theory, and then outlook the likely impact of machine learning (ML) and quantum computers (QC) to appreciate traditional chemical concepts in decades to come. It is maintained that the development and maturation of ML and QC methods in theoretical and computational chemistry represent two paradigm shifts about how the Schrödinger equation can be solved. New chemical understanding can be harnessed in these two new paradigms by making respective use of ML features and QC qubits. Before that happens, however, we still have hurdles to face and obstacles to overcome in both ML and QC arenas. Possible pathways to tackle these challenges are proposed. We anticipate that hierarchical modeling, in contrast to multiscale modeling, will emerge and thrive, becoming the workforce of in silico simulations in the next few decades.

Abstract:Computational chemistry is an indispensable tool for understanding molecules and predicting chemical properties. However, traditional computational methods face significant challenges due to the difficulty of solving the Schrödinger equations and the increasing computational cost with the size of the molecular system. In response, there has been a surge of interest in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to in silico experiments. Integrating AI and ML into computational chemistry offers solutions to scalability and accelerating the exploration of chemical space. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding the reproducibility and transferability of ML models. This review highlights the evolution of ML in learning from, complementing, or replacing traditional computational chemistry for energy and property predictions. Starting from models trained entirely on numerical data, a journey set forth toward the ideal model incorporating or learning the physical laws of quantum mechanics. Through a review of existing computational methods, ML models, and their intertwining, this paper also outlines a roadmap for future research, identifying areas for improvement and innovation. Ultimately, the goal is to develop AI architectures capable of predicting accurate and transferable solutions to the Schrödinger equation, thereby revolutionizing in silico experiments within chemistry and materials science.
