Abstract:We propose a theoretical scheme for a non-Hermitian atomic grating within an ultra-cold rubidium-87 ($^{87}Rb$) atomic ensemble. The grating's diffraction properties depend on the polarization states of incident photons and are controlled non-locally through Rydberg interactions. Multiple types of polarization-dependent diffraction modes are generated, benefiting from no crosstalk atomic transition channels based on transition selection rules. Those polarization-dependent diffraction modes can be switched using dynamic optical pulse trains, exploiting the Rydberg blockade effect, and are tunable by non-Hermitian optical modulation. Our work will advance the application of asymmetric optical scattering by utilizing the polarization degree of freedom within continuous media and benefit the application of versatile non-Hermitian/asymmetric optical devices.

Abstract:We propose a theoretical scheme for dipole exchange-induced grating (DEIG) based on a hybrid system consisting of ultra-cold Rubidium ($^{87}$Rb) atomic ensemble and movable Rydberg spin atoms. The optical response of the grating appears as a superposition of three- and four-level configurations, similar to the cooperative optical nonlinear effect caused by the dipole blockade effect. However, such Rydberg atomic grating uniquely responds to the spatial positions of spin atoms, offering a novel approach to dynamically control electromagnetically induced gratings (EIG) except for input probe intensity.

Abstract:The optical Bloch oscillation (OBO) is an optical-quantum analogy effect that is significant for light field manipulations, such as light beam localization, oscillation and tunneling. As an intra-band oscillation, OBO was important for optical investigations in photonic lattices and atomic vapors over an extended period of time. However, OBO in reconfigurable platforms is still an open topic, even though tunability is highly desired in developing modern photonic techniques. Here we theoretically establish and experimentally demonstrate OBO in an electromagnetically induced photonic lattice with a ramping refractive index, established in a coherently-prepared three-level 85Rb atomic vapor under the electromagnetically induced transparency condition. This is achieved by interfering two coupling beams with Gaussian profiles and launching a probe beam that exhibits OBO within the resulting lattice. The induced reconfigurable photonic lattice possesses a transverse gradient, due to the innate edges of Gaussian beams, and sets a new stage for guiding the flow of light in periodic photonic environments. Our results should motivate better understanding of peculiar physical properties of an intriguing quantum-optical analogy in an atomic setting.

Abstract:We propose a theoretical scheme to realize two-dimensional (2D) diffraction grating in a four-level inverted-Y-type atomic system coupled by a standing-wave (SW) field and a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) vortex field. Owing to asymmetric spatial modulation of the LG vortex field, the incident probe field can be lopsidedly diffracted into four domains and asymmetric 2D electromagnetically induced grating (EIG) is created. By adjusting the detunings of the probe field and the LG vortex field, the intensities of the LG vortex field and the coherent SW field, as well as the interaction length, the diffraction properties and efficiency can be effectively manipulated. In addition, the effect of the azimuthal parameter on the Fraunhofer diffraction of the probe field is also discussed. The scheme of symmetric 2D diffraction grating may provide a versatile platform for designing quantum devices that require asymmetric light ransmission.

Lattice Dynamics with Molecular Berry Curvature: Chiral Optical Phonons

Abstract:Under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, the electronic ground state evolves adiabatically and can accumulate geometrical phases characterized by the molecular Berry curvature. In this work, we study the effect of the molecular Berry curvature on the lattice dynamics in a system with broken time-reversal symmetry. The molecular Berry curvature is formulated based on the single-particle electronic Bloch states. It manifests as a non-local effective magnetic field in the equations of motion of the ions that are beyond the widely adopted Raman spin-lattice coupling model. We employ the Bogoliubov transformation to solve the quantized equations of motion and to obtain phonon polarization vectors. We apply our formula to the Haldane model on a honeycomb lattice and find a large molecular Berry curvature around the Brillouin zone center. As a result, the degeneracy of the optical branches at this point is lifted intrinsically. The lifted optical phonons show circular polarizations, possess large phonon Berry curvature, and have a nearly quantized angular momentum that modifies the Einstein-de Haas effect.
Chiral Topological Orders in an Optical Raman Lattice

Abstract:We find an optical Raman lattice without spin-orbit coupling showing chiral topological orders for cold atoms. Two incident plane-wave lasers are applied to simultaneously generate a double-well square lattice and periodic Raman couplings, the latter of which drive the nearest-neighbor hopping and create a staggered flux pattern across the lattice. Such a minimal setup can yield the quantum anomalous Hall effect with a large gap-bandwidth ratio in the single particle regime, while in the interacting regime it achieves the J1-J2-K spin model, with the nearest-neighboring (J1) and next-nearest-neightboring (J2) exchange coupling coefficients, and the three three-spin interacting parameter (K) is controllable. We show that the J1-J2-K spin model may support a chiral spin liquid phase. It is interesting that the quantum anomalous Hall state can be detected by only measuring the Bloch states in the two symmetric momentum points of the first Brillouin zone. Further, we also show that heating in the present optical Raman lattice can be essentially reduced compared with the conventional laser-assisted tunneling schemes. This suggests that the predicted topological states be reachable with the current experimental capability.

We have classified the mechanisms that lead to symmetric or asymmetric diffraction, and found that our experiment presents a magnetic alternative to a moving optical lattice, with a great potential to achieve a very large momentum transfer ($>110 \hbar k$) to a BEC using well-developed magnetic trapping techniques.

Abstract:In a three-level atomic system coupled by two equal-amplitude laser fields with a frequency separation 2$\delta$, a weak probe field exhibits a multiple-peaked absorption spectrum with a constant peak separation $\delta$. The corresponding probe dispersion exhibits steep normal dispersion near the minimum absorption between the multiple absorption peaks, which leads to simultaneous slow group velocities for probe photons at multiple frequencies separated by $\delta$. We report an experimental study in such a bichromatically coupled three-level $\Lambda$ system in cold $^{87}$Rb atoms. The multiple-peaked probe absorption spectra under various experimental conditions have been observed and compared with the theoretical calculations.

Optically Induced Atomic Lattice with Tunable Near-Field and Far-Field Diffraction Patterns

Abstract:Conventional periodic structures usually have nontunable refractive indices and thus lead to immutable photonic bandgaps. A periodic structure created in an ultracold atoms ensemble by externally controlled light can overcome this disadvantage and enable lots of promising applications. Here, two novel types of optically induced square lattices, i.e., the amplitude and phase lattices, are proposed in an ultracold atoms ensemble by interfering four ordinary plane waves under different parameter conditions. We demonstrate that in the far-field regime, the atomic amplitude lattice with high transmissivity behaves similarly to an ideal pure sinusoidal amplitude lattice, whereas the atomic phase lattices capable of producing phase excursion across a weak probe beam along with high transmissivity remains equally ideal. Moreover, we identify that the quality of Talbot imaging about a phase lattice is greatly improved when compared with an amplitude lattice. Such an atomic lattice could find applications in all-optical switching at the few photons level and paves the way for imaging ultracold atoms or molecules both in the near-field and in the far-field with a nondestructive and lensless approach.

Berry-Curvature Engineering for Nonreciprocal Directional Dichroism in Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Abstract:In two-dimensional antiferromagnets, we find that the mixed Berry curvature can be attributed as the geometrical origin of the nonreciprocal directional dichroism (NDD), which refers to the difference in light absorption between opposite propagation directions. This Berry curvature is closely related to the uniaxial strain in accordance with the symmetry constraint, leading to a highly tunable NDD, whose sign and strength can be tuned via strain direction. We choose the lattice model of MnBi2Te4 as a concrete example. The coupling between mixed Berry curvature and strain also suggests the magnetic quadrupole of the Bloch wave packet as the macroscopic order parameter probed by the NDD in two dimensions, which is distinct from the multiferroic order P×M or the spin toroidal and quadrupole order within a unit cell in previous studies. Identifying topological edge states in 2D optical lattices using light scattering

Abstract:We recently proposed in a Letter [Physical Review Letters 108 255303] a novel scheme to detect topological edge states in an optical lattice, based on a generalization of Bragg spectroscopy. The scope of the present article is to provide a more detailed and pedagogical description of the system - the Hofstadter optical lattice - and probing method. We first show the existence of topological edge states, in an ultra-cold gas trapped in a 2D optical lattice and subjected to a synthetic magnetic field. The remarkable robustness of the edge states is verified for a variety of external confining potentials. Then, we describe a specific laser probe, made from two lasers in Laguerre-Gaussian modes, which captures unambiguous signatures of these edge states. In particular, the resulting Bragg spectra provide the dispersion relation of the edge states, establishing their chiral nature. In order to make the Bragg signal experimentally detectable, we introduce a "shelving method", which simultaneously transfers angular momentum and changes the internal atomic state. This scheme allows to directly visualize the selected edge states on a dark background, offering an instructive view on topological insulating phases, not accessible in solid-state experiments.

Geometric Effects in the Effective-Mass Theory and Topological Optical Superlattices

Abstract:Cold atoms tailored by an optical lattice have become a fascinating arena for simulating quantum physics. In this area, one important and challenging problem is creating effective spin-orbit coupling (SOC), especially for fashioning a cold atomic gas into a topological phase, for which prevailing approaches mainly rely on the Raman coupling between the atomic internal states and a laser field. Herein, a strategy for realizing effective SOC is proposed by exploiting the geometric effects in the effective-mass theory, without resorting to internal atomic states. It is shown that the geometry of Bloch states can have nontrivial effects on the wave-mechanical states under external fields, leading to effective SOC and an effective Darwin term, which have been neglected in the standard effective-mass approximation. It is demonstrated that these relativisticlike effects can be employed to introduce effective SOC in a two-dimensional optical superlattice, and induce a nontrivial topological phase.

Abstract:The nonlinear Talbot effect means formation of self-imaging of the periodic structure by utilizing the harmonic wave instead of the fundamental one. Electromagnetically induced optical lattices established in atomic ensembles by optical induction technique have received great attention in recent years. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear four wave mixing (FWM) Talbot effect in the Rubidium medium, where the third-order susceptibility χ(3) has periodic distribution due to the modulation from the incident pump light. Two kinds of periodic structure, the square lattice and hexagonal lattice, are employed to investigate the nonlinear FWM Talbot effect. The integer and fractional Talbot images produced by the FWM field are all obtained. The experimental results are qualitatively consistent with theoretical simulations. Different from the self-imaging of the refractive index in the linear optics, the FWM Talbot effect is the self-imaging of the periodic χ(3) . The results may offer a high-resolution lensless way for imaging various optical periodic structures.

Abstract:Structural disorder has been shown to enhance and modulate magnetic, electrical, dipolar, electrochemical, and mechanical properties of materials. However, the possibility of obtaining novel optical and optoelectronic properties from structural disorder remains an open question. Here, we show unambiguous evidence of disorder — in the form of anisotropic, picoscale atomic displacements — modulating the refractive index tensor and resulting in the giant optical anisotropy observed in BaTiS3, a quasi‐one‐dimensional hexagonal chalcogenide. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction studies reveal the presence of antipolar displacements of Ti atoms within adjacent TiS6 chains along the c‐axis, and three‐fold degenerate Ti displacements in the a‐b plane. 47/49Ti solid‐state NMR provides additional evidence for those Ti displacements in the form of a three‐horned NMR lineshape resulting from a low symmetry local environment around Ti atoms. We used scanning transmission electron microscopy to directly observe the globally disordered Ti a‐b plane displacements and find them to be ordered locally over a few unit cells. First‐principles calculations show that the Ti a‐b plane displacements selectively reduce the refractive index along the ab‐plane, while having minimal impact on the refractive index along the chain direction, thus resulting in a giant enhancement in the optical anisotropy. By showing a strong connection between structural disorder with picoscale displacements and the optical response in BaTiS3, this study opens a pathway for designing optical materials with high refractive index and functionalities such as large optical anisotropy and nonlinearity. Experimental Realization of a High Precision Tunable Hexagonal Optical Lattice

Abstract:Hexagonal optical lattices offer a tunable platform to study exotic orbital physics in solid state materials. Here, we present a versatile high-precision scheme to implement a hexagonal optical lattice potential, which is engineered by overlapping two independent triangular optical sublattices generated by laser beams with slightly different wavelengths around 1064 nm. This enables us to precisely control the detailed structure of the hexagonal lattice by adjusting the relative position and the relative lattice depth of the two triangular optical sublattices. Taking advantage of the sensitive dependence of the second Bloch band on small lattice deformations, we propose a strategy to optimize the optical lattice geometry with an extremely high precision. This method can also be extended to other lattice configurations involving more than two sublattices. Our work provides the experimental requirements in the search for novel orbital physics of ultracold atoms, for example, in the flat p-band of the hexagonal optical lattice.
Conical diffraction in atomic vapor: Mathematical models and numerical calculations

Abstract:This study investigated the conical diffraction characteristics in the honeycomb lattice of a Λ-type three-level energy system for rubidium atomic configuration. Its band structure incorporates Dirac cones in accordance with the plane wave expansion method. We determined that the rotation angle θ of the three vectors strongly impacted the cone diffraction profile. For θ=0° and 60° , in the reciprocal lattice space, the Dirac cone states were excited, and symmetric cone diffraction was supported. When 0<θ<60° , an asymmetric cone diffraction with a dark notch appeared on the outer edge of the conical ring. The results indicate that the frequency detuning of the coupling field and high-order nonlinear susceptibilities in the medium are effective and concise approaches to manipulate the occurrence of cone diffraction. The findings of this study enhance the understanding of the cone diffraction phenomena and broaden the practical applicability of atomic configuration.

Reduction of the Differential Light Shift by the Spatial Periodicity in an Optical Lattice

Abstract:We study the spatial periodicity effects on the differential light shift of noninteracting atoms in an optical lattice. Through the Rabi-spectrum approach, when the wavelength of the optical lattice is not magic, a reduction to the differential light shift is expected. The reduction results from the Bloch bands induced by the quantized motion in the periodic potential. Taking the microwave transition of rubidium atoms as an example, this reduction at some wavelengths can reach one order of magnitude, compared to the data without considering the spatial profile of the optical lattice. When the atomic temperature is considered, the differential light shift increases or decreases with temperature, depending on the wavelength of the lattice. Our results should be beneficial for microwave optical lattice clock and precision measurements.
Analysis of Observable Quantities from Excited Rubidium Impacted by Electrons at Low Incident Energy

Abstract:The observable quantities (Stokes parameters, orientation parameter L-perpendicular to(+), alignment angle gamma, linear-light-polarization degree P-lin) of rubidium, excited from S to P and scattered by electrons at 20 eV, are calculated with the two distorted wave methods, i.e. the ordinary distorted wave method distorted wave method (ODWM) and the indirect-relativistic distorted wave method (IRDWM). Compared to the measured results of superelastic electron scattering from laser excited rubidium at incident energy 20 eV, the result shows that the two kinds of theoretical calculations are partially in agreement with the experimental results. When scattering angle is smaller than 45 degrees, the Stokes parameters and both the calculations of orientation parameter and alignment are consistent with the measured data. Within the scattering angles 70 degrees-120 degrees, the IRDWM results are in agreement with the measurements, which shows that indirect relativistic effects exist during the process of rubidium scattering by low-energy electrons.
Emulating twisted double bilayer graphene with a multiorbital optical lattice

Abstract:This work theoretically explores how to emulate twisted double bilayer graphene with ultracold atoms in multiorbital optical lattices. In particular, the quadratic band touching of Bernal stacked bilayer graphene is emulated using a square optical lattice with $p_x$, $p_y$, and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals on each site, while the effects of a twist are captured through the application of an incommensurate potential. The quadratic band touching is stable until the system undergoes an Anderson like delocalization transition in momentum space, which occurs concomitantly with a strongly renormalized single particle spectrum inducing flat bands, which is a generalization of the magic-angle condition realized in Dirac semimetals. The band structure is described perturbatively in the quasiperiodic potential strength, which captures miniband formation and the existence of magic-angles that qualitatively agrees with the exact numerical results in the appropriate regime. We identify several magic-angle conditions that can either have part or all of the quadratic band touching point become flat. In each case, these are accompanied by a diverging density of states and the delocalization of plane wave eigenstates. It is discussed how these transitions and phases can be observed in ultracold atom experiments.
