Abstract:A 3D plasmonic gold nanopocket (3D‐PGNP) nanostructure is fabricated and combined with a machine learning (ML) method for reliable and quantitative microplastics (MPs) detection. The 3D‐PGNP is integrated with a syringe filter device and demonstrated as an on‐site applicable technique, making it an ideal platform for multitype MP detection devices in the real field. Microplastics (MPs) are present not only in the environment but also in drinking water, food, and consumer products. These MPs being toxic, carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting, and genetic risk creators cause several diseases. Despite various approaches, the development of onsite applicable, facile, and quick MP detection methods is still challenging. Here, 3D‐plasmonic gold nanopocket (3D‐PGNP) nanoarchitecture is formed on a paper substrate for simultaneous MP filtration and detection. The paper‐based 3D‐PGNP is integrated with a syringe filter device, and then, MP‐containing solutions are injected through the syringe. Subsequent detection of the MPs using the surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) successfully identifies the MPs without pretreatment. The interface and volumetric hotspot generation of 3D‐PGNP around the captured MPs significantly improves the sensitivity, which is confirmed by finite‐difference time‐domain simulation. Then, the SERS mapping images obtained from a portable Raman spectrometer are transformed into digital signals via machine learning (ML) technique to identify and quantify the MP distribution. The developed SERS‐ML‐based MP detection method is applied for mixture MPs and for real matrix samples, demonstrating that the method provides improved accuracy. This system is expected to be used for various MPs detection and for environmentally hazardous substances, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Abstract:Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) are global contaminants of growing concern to the ecosystem and human health. In-the-field detection and identification of environmental micro- and nano-plastics (e-MNPs) is critical for monitoring the spread and effects of e-MNPs but is challenging due to the dearth of suitable analytical techniques, especially in the sub-micron size range. Here we show that thin gold films patterned with a dense, hexagonal array of ring-shaped nanogaps (RSNs) can be used as active substrates for the sensitive detection of micro- and nano-plastics by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), requiring only small sample volumes and no significant sample preparation. By drop-casting 0.2-μL aqueous test samples onto the SERS substrates, 50-nm polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles could be determined via Raman spectroscopy at concentrations down to 1 μg/mL. The substrates were successfully applied to the detection and identification of ∼100-nm polypropylene e-MNPs in filtered drinking water and ∼100-nm polyethylene terephthalate (PET) e-MNPs in filtered wash-water from a freshly cleaned PET-based infant feeding bottle.
Surface enhanced raman spectroscopy based sensitive and onsite detection of microplastics in water utilizing silver nanoparticles and nanodendrites

Abstract:Plastics, of the order of microns in size, being not visible to the naked eye, are one of the significant contributors to pollution in the environment. Thus, the detection of micron-sized plastics (microplastics (MPs)) is crucial because of its hazardous toxic effects on our surroundings. In this work, we have proposed a quick and on-site detection of MPs, such as, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polystyrene (PS) at ultra trace level using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). To detect and analyse the spectra, two different nanostructures, such as, spherical shaped Ag nanoparticles (NPs), and shape anisotropic Ag nano-dendrites (NDs) were utilised to acquire the SERS spectra. A comprehensive analysis was further performed to check and investigate the amount of enhancements due to the mentioned nanostructures. We observed the Ag NDs exhibited amplified signal intensity compared to the Ag NPs due to the shape anisotropy leading to the surface charge confinement effect to create highly dense hotspots. However, the spherical shaped polystyrene beads of micron size exhibited better enhancement in Raman signal intensity when mixed with Ag NPs due to increased surface adsorption with the NPs. Therefore, the comparative study emphasizes the ability of using solution-based nanostructure as SERS for the onsite detection of microplastics having diverge size range at low concentration.

Abstract:The detection of sub-ppm levels of nanoplastics using a surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor was demonstrated. The proposed Au nanograting as surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor, fabricated using nanoimprint lithography and oblique angle deposition, was designed to contain nanoplastics with enhanced local plasmonic fields. Electromagnetic simulations and Raman measurements show that the plasmonic field enhanced inside the nanograting enables the detection of Raman signal from 50-nm-sized polystyrene nanoparticles in 3-μL-droplets at a concertation of 0.1 ppm. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was applied to detect polystyrene in microwave-heated water in a disposable bowl. The results show that the proposed sensor offers promising potential for detecting nanoplastics released from plasticware.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has great potential as an analytical technique for environmental analyses. In this study, we fabricated highly porous gold (Au) supraparticles ( i.e. , ‚ào100 Œom diameter agglomerates of primary nano-sized particles) and evaluated their applicability as SERS substrates for the sensitive detection of environmental contaminants. Facile supraparticle fabrication was achieved by evaporating a droplet containing an Au and polystyrene (PS) nanoparticle mixture on a superamphiphobic nanofilament substrate. Porous Au supraparticles were obtained through the removal of the PS phase by calcination at 500 ¬∞C. The porosity of the Au supraparticles was readily adjusted by varying the volumetric ratios of Au and PS nanoparticles. Six environmental contaminants (malachite green isothiocyanate, rhodamine B, benzenethiol, atrazine, adenine, and gene segment) were successfully adsorbed to the porous Au supraparticles, and their distinct SERS spectra were obtained. The observed linear dependence of the characteristic Raman peak intensity for each environmental contaminant on its aqueous concentration reveals the quantitative SERS detection capability by porous Au supraparticles. The limit of detection (LOD) for the six environmental contaminants ranged from ‚ào10 nM to ‚ào10 ŒoM, which depends on analyte affinity to the porous Au supraparticles and analyte intrinsic Raman cross-sections. The porous Au supraparticles enabled multiplex SERS detection and maintained comparable SERS detection sensitivity in wastewater influent. Overall, we envision that the Au supraparticles can potentially serve as practical and sensitive SERS devices for environmental analysis applications.

Abstract:The presence of submicron- (1 μm-100 nm) and nanoplastic (<100 nm) particles within various sample matrices, ranging from marine environments to foods and beverages, has become a topic of increasing interest in recent years. Despite this interest, very few analytical techniques are known that allow for the detection of these small plastic particles in the low concentration ranges that they are anticipated to be present at. Research focused on optimizing surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to enhance signal obtained in Raman spectroscopy has been shown to have great potential for the detection of plastic particles below conventional resolution limits. In this study, we produce SERS substrates composed of gold nanostars and assess their potential for submicron- and nanoplastic detection. The results show 33 nm polystyrene could be detected down to 1.25 μg mL-1 while 36 nm poly(ethylene terephthalate) was detected down to 5 μg mL-1. These results confirm the promising potential of the gold nanostar-based SERS substrates for nanoplastic detection. Furthermore, combined with findings for 121 nm polypropylene and 126 nm polyethylene particles, they highlight potential differences in analytical performance that depend on the properties of the plastics being studied.

Abstract:Microplastics and nanoplastics are emerging classes of environmental contaminants that pose significant threats to human health. In particular, small nanoplastics (<1 μm) have drawn considerable attention owing to their adverse effects on human health; for example, nanoplastics have been found in the placenta and blood. However, reliable detection techniques are lacking. In this study, we developed a fast detection method that combines membrane filtration technology and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which can simultaneously enrich and detect nanoplastics with sizes as small as 20 nm. First, we synthesized spiked gold nanocrystals (Au NCs), achieving a controlled preparation of thorns ranging from 25 nm to 200 nm and regulating the number of thorns. Subsequently, mesoporous spiked Au NCs were homogeneously deposited on a glass fiber filter membrane to form an Au film as a SERS sensor. The Au-film SERS sensor achieved in-situ enrichment and sensitive SERS detection of micro/nanoplastics in water. Additionally, it eliminated sample transfer and prevented the loss of small nanoplastics. Using the Au-film SERS sensor, we detected 20 nm to 10 μm standard polystyrene (PS) microspheres with a detection limit of 0.1 mg/L. We also realized the detection of 100 nm PS nanoplastics at the 0.1 mg/L level in tap water and rainwater. This sensor provides a potential tool for rapid and susceptible on-site detection of micro/nanoplastics, especially small-sized nanoplastics.
V-shaped substrate for surface and volume enhanced Raman spectroscopic analysis of microplastics

Abstract:Research on the microplastics (MPs) is developing towards smaller size, but corresponding methods for the rapid and accurate detection of microplastics, especially nanoplastics still present challenge. In this work, a novel surface and volume enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrate was developed for the rapid detection of microplastic particles below 5 μm. The gold nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited onto the surface and into the V-shaped nanopores of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) through magnetron sputtering or ion sputtering, and then AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate was obtained and studied for microplastic detection. SERS performance of AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate was evaluated through the detection of polystyrene and polymethyl methacrylate microspheres. Results indicated that individual polystyrene sphere with a diameter of 1 μm can be well detected on AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate, and the maximum enhancement factor (EF) can reach 20. In addition, microplastics in ambient atmospheric samples were collected and tested to verify the effectiveness of the AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate in the real environment. This study provides a rapid, economic and simple method for detecting and identifying microplastics with small size.

Abstract:Low-cost detection systems are needed for the identification of microplastics (MPs) in environmental samples. However, their rapid identification is hindered by the need for complex isolation and pre-treatment methods. This study describes a comprehensive sensing platform to identify MPs in environmental samples without requiring independent separation or pre-treatment protocols. It leverages the physicochemical properties of macroporous-mesoporous silver (Ag) substrates templated with self-assembled polymeric micelles to concurrently separate and analyze multiple MP targets using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The hydrophobic layer on Ag aids in stabilizing the nanostructures in the environment and mitigates biofouling. To monitor complex samples with multiple MPs and to demultiplex numerous overlapping patterns, we develop a neural network (NN) algorithm called SpecATNet that employs a self-attention mechanism to resolve the complex dependencies and patterns in SERS data to identify six common types of MPs: polystyrene, polyethylene, polymethylmethacrylate, polytetrafluoroethylene, nylon, and polyethylene terephthalate. SpecATNet uses multi-label classification to analyze multi-component mixtures even in the presence of various interference agents. The combination of macroporous-mesoporous Ag substrates and self-attention-based NN technology holds potential to enable field monitoring of MPs by generating rich datasets that machines can interpret and analyze.
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for the detection of microplastics

Abstract:Detection of microplastics is still challenging due to limitations of current methods, instrumentation, and particle size. In this work, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to detect polystyrene (PS, 350 nm) and polyethylene (PE, 1–4 μm) particles in pure water. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) of four different sizes were synthesized, characterized, and used as SERS active substrate for microplastic detection. The Au NPs obtained had a spherical shape with diameters of 33.2, 67.5, and 93.7 nm and an elliptical shape with shorter and longer diameters (nanorods) of 23.5 and 35.5 nm, respectively. The optimal conditions (volume ratio of sample to gold colloid, aggregating agent and its concentration) were determined. The efficient and stable SERS signals were observed on the PS microparticles, while the PE signal was difficult to obtain. The developed SERS method allows the detection of polystyrene microparticles at concentrations as low as 6.5 μg mL −1 . The described method can be a useful tool for the detection of microplastic pollutants of this particular size.

Abstract:Plastic pollution represents a pressing global environmental issue, with microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) being ubiquitously found in both food and the environment. However, the investigation of NPs has been hampered by limited detection technologies, necessitating the development of advanced techniques. This study introduces a sol-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) approach for the swift detection of MPs and NPs in aqueous environment. By leveraging the aggregation effect between silver nanoparticles (Ag nanoparticles) and plastic particles, the plastic Raman signals is significantly enhanced, effectively lowering the detection limit. Utilizing Ag nanoparticles, plastic particles as small as 20 nm were detected in liquid samples, with a detection limit of 0.0005%. With the developed method, nanoplastic particles in seafood packaging samples were successfully tested, with concentration found to be at μg/L level. This method offers a rapid, economical, and convenient means of detecting and identifying MPs and NPs. The sensitivity of the method allows for capturing plastic signals within 2 min, making it valuable for aquatic environment contamination detection. SERS technology also holds promise for rapid plastic solution detection, potentially becoming a fast detection method for food safety.

One-step detection of nanoplastics in aquatic environments using a portable SERS chessboard substrate

Abstract:Nanoplastics present a significant hazard to both the environment and human health. However, the development of rapid and sensitive analysis techniques for nanoplastics is limited by their small size, lack of specificity, and low concentrations. In this study, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chessboard substrate was introduced as a multi-channel platform for the pre-concentration and detection of nanoplastics, achieved by polydomain aggregating silver nanoparticles (PASN) on a hydrophilic and a punched hydrophobic PVDF combined filter membrane. Through a straightforward suction filtration process, nanoplastics were captured by the PASN gap in a single step for subsequent SERS detection, while excess moisture was promptly eliminated from the filter membrane. The PASN-based SERS chessboard substrate, benefiting from the enhanced electromagnetic (EM) field, effectively discriminated polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics ranging in size from 30 nm to 1000 nm. Furthermore, this substrate demonstrated favorable repeatability (RSD of 8.6 %), high sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.001 mg/mL for 100 nm of PS nanoplastics, and broad linear detection ranges spanning from 0.001 to 0.5 mg/mL (R2 = 0.9916). Additionally, the SERS chessboard substrate enabled quantitative analysis of nanoplastics spiked in tap and lake water samples. Notably, the entire pre-concentration and detection procedure required only 3 μL of sample and could be completed within 1 min. With the accessibility of portable detection instruments and the ability to prepare substrates on demand, the PASN-based SERS chessboard substrate is anticipated to facilitate the establishment of a comprehensive global nanoplastics map.

Abstract:The escalating utilization of plastics in daily life has resulted in pervasive environmental pollution and consequent health hazards. The challenge of detecting and capturing microplastics, which are imperceptible to the naked eye, is exacerbated by their diminutive size, hydrophobic surface properties, and capacity to absorb organic compounds. This study focuses on the application of peptides, constituted of specific amino acid sequences, and microneedles for the rapid and selective identification of microplastics. Peptides, due to their smaller size and greater environmental stability compared with antibodies, emerge as a potent solution to overcome the limitations inherent in existing detection methodologies. To immobilize peptides onto microneedles, this study employed microneedles embedded with gold nanorods, augmenting them with sulfhydryl (SH) groups at the peptides' termini. The sensor developed through this methodology exhibited efficient peptide binding to the microneedle tips, thereby facilitating the capture of microplastics. Raman spectroscopy was employed for the detection of microplastics, with the results demonstrating successful attachment to the microneedles. This novel approach not only facilitates localized analysis but also presents a viable strategy for the detection of microplastics across diverse environmental settings.

Abstract:Recently, various waste microplastics sensors have been introduced in response to environmental and biological hazards posed by waste microplastics. In particular, the detrimental effects of nano-sized plastics or nanoplastics have been reported to be severe. Moreover, there have been many difficulties for sensing microplastics due to the limited methodologies for selectively recognizing nanoplastics. In this study, a customized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) based localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) system having bio-mimicked peptide probes toward the nanoplastics was demonstrated. The specific determination through the oligo-peptide recognition was accomplished by chemical conjugation both on the LSPR chip’s 40~50 nm Au NPs and sandwiched 5 nm Au NPs, respectively. The peptide probe could selectively bind to polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics in the forms of fragmented debris by cryo-grinding. A simple UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used to identify the LSPR sensing by primarily measuring the absorbance change and shift of absorption peak. The sandwich-binding could increase the LSPR detection sensitivity up to 60% due to consecutive plasmonic effects. In addition, microwave-boiled DI water inside of a styrofoam container was tested for putative PS nanoplastics resource as a real accessible sample. The LSPR system could be a novel protocol overcoming the limitations from conventional nanoplastic detection.

Abstract:Nanoplastics are widespread and pose a potential threat to human health. In this work, we designed a flexible multiscale cavity structured (MCS) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate decorating Ni 3 S 2 nanocavity on a modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microcavity. The dense two-dimensional Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets can provide a large surface area for the deposition of plasmonic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), increasing the density and strength of the "hotspots". Additionally, the nanocavity (width ∼500 nm), formed by the nanosheet surroundings, offers not only electromagnetic enhancement of the cavity mode for SERS but also a crucial detection site for nanoplastics attachment. This effectively addresses the challenge of SERS detection due to the scale mismatch between nanoplastics (>50 nm) and conventional "hotspots" (<10 nm). Moreover, the flexible imprinted PVDF microcavity endows the proposed substrate with omnidirectional "hotspots" enhancement, ensuring the signal stability and the feasibility of in-site detection of the actual sample. As a result, we achieved the successful in-site detection of polystyrene (PS) spheres of different sizes on the surface of oysters, with a detection limit of 10 -3 mg/mL for 50 nm diameter. The flexible multiscale cavity SERS substrate is expected to show great potential in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Tailoring smart surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with tunable “hot spots” has invoked widely attention due to its unique structures and plasmonic features. Herein, we develop a “suction-release” SERS strategy (SRSS) for dynamic detection of targeted analytes by utilizing a stimulus-responsive three-dimensional (3D) AgNPs-decorated Basil-seeds microgels (ABM). Crucially, this smart ABM enable precisely tailoring 3D hot spots region by regulating the ambient temperature and moisture. The dynamically tunable ABM serves as a stabilized domain for high-density loading of AgNPs, as well as an adsorption matrix for concentration of the analytes in hot spots region, thereby allowing simultaneously regulating 3D structures and capturing target molecules in plasmonic sites. Most importantly, due to the reversible structures and plasmonic properties, the ABM can clean themselves when immersed in iodide solution, thus achieving recyclable and credible SERS analysis of solid samples. The ABM-based SRSS displays superior sensitivity and uniformity for in-field analysis of multiple pesticides over a large range of 2 × 10-6-104 μM. The proposed sensing strategy offers great potential for reliable quantitative SERS detection of complexed media and in-situ process analysis.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and Nanoplastics (NPs) accumulated in the environment have been identified as a major global issue due to their potential harm to wildlife. Current research in the detection of MPs is well established. However, the detection of NPs remains challenging. The aim of this paper is to investigate the detection of polystyrene (PS) NPs on a super-hydrophobic substrate using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology after high-speed centrifugation of PS NPs and AgNPs. The hydrophobic substrate reduces the contact area of droplet, concentrating PS NPs and AgNPs on a small spot, which eliminates the random distribution of nano particles. The condensed PS NPs and AgNPs improve the SERS intensity, reproductivity and detection sensitivity. The results show that SERS measurement on a hydrophobic substrate could significantly improve the detection sensitivity of PS NPs, with the detection limits of PS NPs as low as 0.5 mg/L (500 nm PS NPs) and 1 mg/L (100 nm PS NPs). The study provides an effective and rapid method for the detection of NPs at trace concentration, demonstrating more possibility for the future detection of trace NPs in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:We synthesize a high-efficiency substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements, which is composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on two-dimensional silicate nanoplatelets acting as an inorganic stabilizer, via the in-situ reduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) by sodium citrate in an aqueous solution. Silicate platelets of ~1-nm thickness and various sizes, viz. laponite (50 nm), sodium montmorillonite (Na+–MMT, 100 nm), and mica (500 nm), are used to stabilize the AuNPs (Au@silicate), which are formed with uniform diameters ranging between 25 and 30 nm as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, the laponite SERS substrate can be used in biological, environmental, and food safety applications to measure small molecules such as DNA (adenine molecule), dye (Direct Blue), and herbicide (paraquat) as it shows high detection sensitivity with a detection limit of 10−9 M for adenine detection. These highly sensitive SERS substrates, with their three-dimensional hot-junctions formed with AuNPs and two-dimensional silicate nanoplatelets, allow the highly efficient detection of organic molecules. Therefore, these Au@silicate nanohybrid substrates have great potential in biosensor technology because of their environmentally-friendly and simple fabrication process, high efficiency, and the possibility of rapid detection.

Abstract:To effectively extract target analytes from complex sample surfaces is of great significance for the practical application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. A plasmonic substrate with multiple "hotspots" for highly sensitive detection of pesticide residues were prepared successfully by assembling gold nanoparticles on buckypaper (AuNPs-BP). The substrate exhibited high SERS enhancement and excellent detection sensitivity, with a detection limit (LOD) of 2.03 × 10 -11 M and 6.88 × 10 -12 M for the probe molecule R6G and MB, respectively. Combined with 3D finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) simulation, the excellent SERS performance of the substrate was attributed to the enhancement of the electromagnetic field around the "hotspots". Additionally, the substrates exhibited excellent flexibility, allowing easy contact with irregular surfaces and facilitating the collection of target molecules on the sample surface. Using a portable Raman spectrometer, the substrate achieved in situ analysis of chlorpyrifos residues on peach, with a LOD as low as 6.8 × 10 -11 M. The method showed high accuracy, with a recovery value ranging from 94.2 % to 115.5 %. The results indicate that the substrate has great potential for rapid and highly sensitive detection of pollutants, especially on non-planar surfaces.
