Abstract:The present study is motivated to experimentally evaluate the horizontal force and the overturning moment on the building with openings (porous buildings) in the form of windows and doors for both perpendicular and oblique tsunami bore attacks in the quasi-steady flow-choked regime. For perpendicular bore attacks, the horizontal force and the overturning moment decreased with the increase in the opening percentage; a higher-order fit is required compared to the linear reduction suggested in the design guidelines. The effect of the Froude number of the bore on the horizontal force and overturning moment reduction is found to be insignificant. Further, the presence of impenetrable side walls (SC configuration) in the porous building reduced the force and the overturning moment compared to all the sides' open conditions (SO configuration). In the case of an oblique bore interacting with the building with SO configuration, the increase in the orientation angle reduced the force and moment per unit width sinusoidally with the maximum observed reduction at an orientation angle, θ = 45°, despite the increase in the blockage ratio. Experimentally, it is ascertained that the evaluated orientation coefficient is independent of the porosity. For the building with SC configuration, beyond θ > 45°, the building behaved as an impervious building despite the presence of openings in the buildings. Empirical equations are proposed to improve the design of porous buildings subjected to hydraulic loads that would form the basis for developing tsunami-resilient buildings.
