Abstract:In this study, chemical looping combustion is innovatively applied to preferential oxidation of CO, successfully achieving the preferential catalytic conversion of CO in hydrogen-rich gas. First, Ce-doped CuO oxygen carriers with different Cu/Ce ratios are synthesized via the sol–gel method, and their respective reactivities in chemical looping preferential oxidation (CL-PROX) of CO are investigated. The oxygen carrier with a Cu/Ce ratio of 0.8, presenting the optimal performance, is further selected for isothermal and cyclic experiments to comprehensively explore its reaction performance. The CO concentration is successfully reduced to below 100 ppm at 125 °C, with the CO selectivity maintaining at over 35 %, meanwhile exhibiting excellent cyclic stability of the oxygen carrier. Subsequently, the interaction between metal ions, and their evolution during the oxygen carrier's redox cycles are carefully examined. Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) experiment reveals significant differences in reducibility under H 2 and CO atmospheres, laying the oxygen carrier's higher selectivity in the preferential oxidation of CO. Furthermore, by combining non-isothermal kinetic experiments, the apparent activation energies of the oxygen carrier in reaction with CO and H 2 were calculated. The obtained apparent activation energy for the reaction between the oxygen carrier and CO was 14.93 kJ/mol, while for H 2 , it was 144.62 kJ/mol. The discrepancy in activation energies explains, from a reaction kinetics perspective, the reason behind the oxygen carrier's preference for CO oxidation. The successful application of chemical looping for preferential oxidation of CO in hydrogen-rich gas not only provides novel research directions for H 2 purification but also offers new insights and theoretical foundations for studying the preferential oxidation–reduction mechanism of copper-cerium oxygen carriers based on copper-cerium synergistic effects under chemical looping conditions.
