Abstract:Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) has emerged as a valuable tool for evaluating secondary batteries due to their efficiency and accuracy. However, interpreting the multifaceted impedance spectra derived from EIS demands a comprehensive grasp of the electrochemical context. This study focuses on devising and applying an Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) model customized specifically for deciphering the intricacies of zinc-ion batteries. The model construction is tailored to the battery's complexities, enabling extraction of circuit elements that faithfully depict the system's dynamics. Moreover, this research investigates the relationship between parameters of the governing equations. Through experimental validation employing real-time EIS measurements from a zinc-ion battery prototype, the reliability and efficacy of the proposed model are confirmed. This validated model not only enhances our understanding of zinc-ion battery behavior but also propels advancements in utilizing this technology across various energy storage applications.

Abstract:An impedance model considering the electrochemo-mechanics of a single particle in lithium-ion batteries is proposed in the work. In this model, the interaction between the Li + diffusion and the surface reaction and mechanics is considered. The characteristic semicircle in low frequency range, which is due to the stress effect, is found. The visualizability of the stress-induced semicircle in the experiments is found to be related to the characteristic frequency of the Li + diffusion. Through simplifying the model expression under three different limiting cases, two dimensionless number α = − θ RT F / ∂ U ∂ c s and β = 1 + θ c ̄ s are defined to evaluate the stress effect. The proposed mechanic-modified model is verified through the results of thin-film electrode considering the difficulty in performing single particle experiments for nano-sized particle and similarity of the single particle and thin film electrode. This work can be supplemented with the theory of porous electrode to analyze the impedance response of a porous electrode, which will be discussed in the next part of this series of papers.

Abstract:Accurate models of lithium-ion batteries are important for analyzing and predicting battery dynamics and aging. This paper presents an electrochemistry-based impedance model for lithium-ion batteries to better understand the relationship between battery internal dynamics and external measurement. The proposed impedance model is a modified single particle model which balances between simplicity and accuracy. The model includes electrochemical impedance due to charge-transfer reaction, diffusion dynamics in the electrodes, effects of ion concentration, capacitance dispersion in the double layer, and anode insulating film growth, etc. The impedance tests for model validation were performed on two lithium-ion cells at ambient temperature and at different SOC levels. A particle swarm optimization method is employed to identify model parameters. The model accuracy under different conditions is compared with that of conventional Randles model and the parameter variations at different stage of the aging process are studied.

Abstract:In this article, we derive and discuss a physics-based model for impedance spectroscopy of lithium batteries. Our model for electrochemical cells with planar electrodes takes into account the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) as a porous surface film. We present two improvements over standard impedance models. First, our model is based on a consistent description of lithium transport through electrolyte and the SEI. We use well-defined transport parameters, e.g., transference numbers, and consider convection of the center-of-mass. Second, we solve our model equations analytically and state the full transport parameter dependence of the impedance signals. Our consistent model results in an analytic expression for the cell impedance including bulk and surface processes. The impedance signals due to concentration polarizations highlight the importance of electrolyte convection in concentrated electrolytes. We simplify our expression for the complex impedance and compare it to common equivalent circuit models. Such simplified models are good approximations in concise parameter ranges. Finally, we compare our model with experiments of lithium metal electrodes and find large transference numbers for lithium ions. This analysis reveals that lithium-ion transport through the SEI has solid-electrolyte character.

Abstract:Ultrahigh rate performance of active particles used in lithium-ion battery electrodes has been revealed by single-particle measurements, which indicates a huge potential for developing high-power batteries. However, the charging/discharging behaviors of such ion-intercalation materials at ultrahigh C-rates can no longer be described by traditional electrochemical kinetics. In the meantime, regular kinetic measuring methods meet a challenge due to the coupling of interface reaction and solid-state diffusion processes, resulting in inaccurate kinetic characterizations of active particles. Here, we decouple the reaction and diffusion kinetics via time-resolved potential measurements with an interval of 1 ms, revealing that the classical Butler-Volmer equation deviates from the actual relation between current density, overpotential, and Li + concentration. An interface ion-intercalation reaction model is developed which considers the excess driving force of Li + (de)intercalation in the charge transfer reaction for ion-intercalation materials. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed model enables accurate prediction of charging/discharging at both particle and electrode scales for various active materials. The kinetic limitation processes from single particles to composite electrodes are systematically revealed, promoting rational designs of high-power batteries

Abstract:The Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy is a powerful method for the investigation of Li intercalation in Li-ion batteries. The deeper knowledge about this very complicated, but extremely important for the charge and discharge characteristics process, is essential for the optimization of the electrodes composition and microstructure, electrolyte composition, power density and safety. The main advantage of the ac measurements is the unique possibility for separation of the kinetics of several different steps, describing the entire electrochemical process. The choice of a model, which should correspond to the structure and to the properties of the object under study, is an important moment for the correct interpretation of the impedance data. Basically, the model structure is assumed a priori, which is a weak point in the present day impedance analysis. Frequently the complicated and rich on phenomena impedance objects are approximated with more simple models. In this way information included in the experimental data could be left unidentified. For instance the description of Li intercalation with a simple Randies model may be regarded in some cases as a simplification.
Introducing a new model for solid-state batteries: Parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis on diffusion, concentration, and electrochemical kinetics

Abstract:Despite their potential, solid-state batteries (SSBs) are challenging to optimize due to the complexity of their materials and the early stage of their modeling, especially compared to liquid-electrolyte technologies. Many existing models rely on empirical equations that cannot represent internal mass-transport and kinetic phenomena. Even studies based on mechanistic models often focus on theoretical explanations of experimental phenomena or generating hard-to-obtain experimental data. In this work, a simple yet versatile mechanistic model – able to simulate any battery composed of a metallic anode, solid electrolyte and intercalation cathode – is proposed and used in a parameter estimation routine to identify the material properties of a Li/LiPON/ LiCoO2 battery. After validation, a parametric study is made to address how each material property impacts concentration profiles, discharge curves, overpotentials, and core key-performance indexes (KPIs) related to energy efficiency and battery capacity. Findings reveal that cathode diffusion is critical to enhancing Extraction Efficiency, in some cases reaching 98.9% of the theoretical capacity without enhancing any other parameter. In the case of Energy Efficiency being a priority over capacity, electrolyte diffusion and concentration showed a pivotal role, in the range of parameters studied, to increase Voltaic Efficiency up to 97.8%. Despite not directly affecting the Extraction Efficiency, it is discussed how high overpotentials caused by Electrolyte Concentration and Kinetic Constants still can harm battery capacity, for charge–discharge cycles limited by boundaries in electrical potential. Finally, studies simultaneously varying two or more parameters show that, despite extreme property enhancements (up to ca 500x higher than the standard case) indeed lead to exceptional results (up to 96.4% for Voltaic Efficiency and 98.9% for Extraction Efficiency), to use such materials at its full potential will result in other zones of the device usually neglected – such as the overpotentials from the metal anode or even the current collector – may become the new stumbling block, underscoring the significance of considering the battery as a holistic system that will inherently exhibit bottlenecks. This also implies, however, in the perpetual potential for enhancement across its components.

Abstract:The use of solid electrolytes (SE) in solid-state batteries holds the promise of achieving higher energy densities and enhancing safety. However, current solid-state batteries face significant interface impedance issues, mainly dealing with the effect of the evolution of the solid-solid interface on ion transport. Semi-solid-state batteries (SSB), containing a small amount of liquid electrolyte, serve as appropriate transitional products in the development process of solid-state batteries. More importantly, the clarity of the relevant interface dynamics can provide theoretical guidance for the subsequent all-solid-state batteries. Therefore, this paper investigates SSB through Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), primarily employing a combination of theoretical modeling, simulation predictions, and experimental analyses to elucidate the complex electrochemical processes within these batteries. Based on detailed exploration of the complex electrochemical processes within SSB, we have discovered additional electrochemical processes beyond Li+ penetration through the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) film and charge transfer. We attribute the additional electrochemical reaction processes to the resistance present at the SE/SEI interface of SSB on account of numerical analysis and interface characterization. Furthermore, this interface resistance exhibits a trend of initial decrease followed by continuous increase, elucidating the attribution and numerical variations of various impedance components within the EIS. The application of EIS techniques to analyze ion transport processes in SSB serves as a suitable transition toward achieving all-solid-state batteries as well as provides guidance for subsequent interface optimization of solid-state batteries and propels their transition from laboratory experimentation to commercialization.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) are strongly considered as the next-generation energy storage devices for their high energy density and intrinsic safety. The solid-solid contact between lithium metal and solid electrolyte plays a vital role in the performance of working ASSLBs, which is challenging to investigate quantitatively by experimental approach. This work proposed a quantitative model based on the finite element method for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy simulation of different solid-solid contact states in ASSLBs. With the assistance of an equivalent circuit model and distribution of relaxation times, it is discovered that as the number of voids and the sharpness of cracks increase, the contact resistance Rcgrows and ultimately dominates the battery impedance. Through accurate fitting, inverse proportional relations between contact resistance Rcand (1 - porosity) as well as crack angle was disclosed. Abstract:Large interfacial resistance plays a dominant role in the performance of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. However, the mechanism of interfacial resistance has been under debate. Here, the Li+ transport at the interfacial region is investigated to reveal the origin of the high Li+ transfer impedance in a LiCoO2(LCO)/LiPON/Pt all-solid-state battery. Both an unexpected nanocrystalline layer and a structurally disordered transition layer are discovered to be inherent to the LCO/LiPON interface. Under electrochemical conditions, the nanocrystalline layer with insufficient electrochemical stability leads to the introduction of voids during electrochemical cycles, which is the origin of the high Li+ transfer impedance at solid electrolyte-electrode interfaces. In addition, at relatively low temperatures, the oxygen vacancies migration in the transition layer results in the formation of Co3O4 nanocrystalline layer with nanovoids, which contributes to the high Li+ transfer impedance. This work sheds light on the mechanism for the high interfacial resistance and promotes overcoming the interfacial issues in all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:The widespread use of hybrid electric vehicles brings a great challenge to meet the power density requirement in the full temperature and state of charge (SOC) intervals while balancing the energy density, cost and lifetime. The research on the interfacial reaction mechanism of high power lithium-ion batteries would be the basis for the above problem. In this paper, a symmetrical cell made from the electrodes of the commercial high power lithium-ion batteries is targeted. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used as the main characterization method to systematically investigate the variation of EIS of high power lithium-ion batteries LiNi 0.33 Co 0.33 Mn 0.33 O 2 and graphite electrodes. The EIS data are fitted using Z-View software, and the Ls element is used to achieve an effective separation of the liquid phase diffusion resistance R ion and the charge transfer resistance R ct of lithium ions inside the porous electrode, thus obtaining the variation patterns of R ion and R ct with the temperature and SOC. The relevant kinetic parameters are tested and the boundary conditions for R ion and R ct are explored as the speed control step respectively, providing a reference for the design and performance improvement of commercial high power lithium-ion batteries, especially those in specific temperature and SOC intervals.

Abstract:Anomalous diffusion impedance due to the solid-state Li+ diffusion in Li-ion batteries is often troublesome for the analysis. In this work, we propose a novel analytical Parallel-diffusion Warburg (PDW) model and couple it with the conventional equivalent electrical circuit model (EECM) analysis to tackle this long-standing challenge. The analytical expression of the PDW is derived from the classical Fickian diffusion framework, introducing non-unified diffusion coefficients that originate from the diverse crystalline conditions of Li+ diffusion paths, as theoretically demonstrated in the atomistic modeling results. The proposed approach (EECM + PDW) is successfully employed to study the diffusion impedance of thin-film LiNi0.5Mn1.5O2 (LNMO) electrodes and porous LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) electrodes, demonstrating the applicability and robustness of this method.

Abstract:The formation of passive film at the interface between the mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) electrode and the organic electrolyte in a lithium-ion battery during the initial period of intercalation was investigated by a.c.-impedance spectroscopy. An equivalent-circuit model consisting of five parallel RC-circuits in series combination was adopted for the curve-fitting analysis of the obtained impedance spectra. The results indicated that both the total interfacial resistance and the passive film thickness increased with decreasing intercalation potential in the ethylene carbonate (EC) or dimethyl carbonate (DMC) single-solvent system, whereas an opposite trend was observed in the system containing diethyl carbonate (DEC) only. In addition, the total interfacial resistance was clearly affected by the porous structure of the passive film in a single-solvent system. In binary solvent systems such as EC/DEC and EC/DMC, on the other hand, the effect of the porous structure on the total interfacial resistance was negligible. The total interfacial resistance and the passive film thickness were also smaller in these systems than those in single-solvent systems. Finally, the variation of the total interfacial resistance and of the passive film thickness in the EC/DEC (or EC/DMC) system were also found to be similar to those in the parent DEC (or DMC) system during intercalation.

The agglomerate impedance model is validated with experimental data of a single secondary particle. A much improved fit, both at the low and high frequency ends, is achieved compared to a previous model in the literature. The previous model, not accounting for the internal reactions, gives a current density on the particle surface one-order greater than that given by the present model. In addition, a parametric study on aging factors is presented.

Abstract:Extended from the electrochemo-mechanical single particle model, an electrochemo-mechanical impedance model for porous electrode in LIB, which consider the effect of the contact stress, is proposed in this work. A modified coefficient ζ which links the mechanical properties of the electrode and particle material is introduced to describe the effect of contact stress. Firstly, we find that the contact stress can weaken the stress-induced semicircle in the low frequency range through analyzing the Faradaic part of the impedance. Secondly, considering the contact stress is determined by the mechanical bonding between electrode layer and the current collector, we introduce a pseudo-elastic boundary condition to analyze the bonding effect. For rigid substrate, namely the in-plane deformation is totally restricted, the effect of the contact stress is strong. For free substrate, namely the in-plane deformation is not restricted, the contact stress is not induced thus its effect on impedance disappears. Lastly, we discuss the interaction effect of stress and the ionic transport in the electrolyte and find that the interaction is strong for silicon-based material, which indicates the stress effect needs to be considered when interpreting the impedance data in this case.
Modeling the electrical double layer at solid-state electrochemical interfaces

Abstract:Models of the electrical double layer (EDL) at electrode/liquid-electrolyte interfaces no longer hold for all-solid-state electrochemistry. Here we show a more general model for the EDL at a solid-state electrochemical interface based on the Poisson-Fermi-Dirac equation. By combining this model with density functional theory predictions, the interconnected electronic and ionic degrees of freedom in all-solid-state batteries, including the electronic band bending and defect concentration variation in the space-charge layer, are captured self-consistently. Along with a general mathematical solution, the EDL structure is presented in various materials that are thermodynamically stable in contact with a lithium metal anode: the solid electrolyte Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and the solid interlayer materials LiF, Li2O and Li2CO3. The model further allows design of the optimum interlayer thicknesses to minimize the electrostatic barrier for lithium ion transport at relevant solid-state battery interfaces.

Abstract:The lack of reliable methods for acquiring accurate and stable electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data at both the cathode and anode makes overlapping kinetic processes in commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with enhanced capacity and size indistinguishable. Micro-reference electrodes offer an elegant solution for obtaining accurate and stable EIS data for both the cathode and anode. The proposed selection model ensures that the mean absolute percentage error between the EIS of the combined cathode and anode and the battery remains below 3.5% under varying temperatures and states of charge (SOCs). Different SOCs, temperatures, and pressures are utilized on the timescale to identify and quantify the kinetic processes of the cathode and anode. The results indicate that under varying temperature conditions, the process of Li+ traversing the solid electrolyte interphase dominates the total impedance of the battery, contributing over 75 %. At -10 degrees C, polarization resistance from this process exceeds a 2500% increase compared to 20 degrees C. Moreover, the variations in the kinetic processes of LIB cathodes and anodes with temperature are revealed on the timescale, with potential reasons for the overlap of kinetic processes provided. This study offers new insights into LIB electrode kinetics and lays a theoretical groundwork for enhancing battery design and performance.
Modelling of temperature dependent impedance in lithium ion polymer batteries and impact analysis on electric vehicles

Abstract:The objective of this work is to demonstrate a temperature-dependent impedance model for high-power lithium-ion polymer cells used in modern Electric Vehicles (EV). The impedance model is combined with a self-heating thermal model for system simulations, in order to predict the impact of different cell types on the overall EV performance, under real-world urban and highway drive-cycles. Measurements show that the internal resistance is almost doubled when the ambient temperature is lowered from $20^{{\rm o}}{\rm C}$ to $5^{{\rm o}}{\rm C}$. This has a drastic impact on the EV's ability to satisfy the load current requirements without performance lags, and justifies the importance of the modelling approach. When operating in cold climates, it is observed that the Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) must strike a balance between EV range and performance, as the stored energy should be optimally distributed between the propulsion and heating systems.
