Abstract:This article proposes a novel 1 bit electronically reconfigurable transmitarray, designed to facilitate digital two-dimensional beam scanning, boasting both high gain and a slim profile. The fundamental phase shifting unit of the transmitarray unit cell consists of a resonant cavity composed of a pair of orthogonal metal gates and dielectric layers, with a cross-sectional height of 0.17 λ. The middle layer of the phase-shifting unit is composed of circular gaps and C-shaped patches, and two diodes with opposite directions are loaded. By turning the diodes ON and OFF, current reversal is accomplished, allowing the unit to transition between its 0 and 1 states and achieve transmission-phase quantization. The unit's minimal insertion loss is 0.37 dB in state 0 and 0.35 dB in state 1, respectively. In order to verify our design, we designed and processed a 16 × 16 transmitarray in the C-band. The simulated results are consistent with the experimental results. The experimental results show that the transmitarray can achieve ± 45° beam scanning on both the E-plane and H-plane, and the maximum gain is 20.59 dBi at 5 GHz, with an aperture efficiency of 20.5%.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problems that this paper attempts to solve are the complex design and high cost of traditional phased - array antennas, as well as some limitations of reconfigurable metasurfaces in achieving dynamic beam scanning. Specifically, the paper proposes a new type of 1 - bit electronically reconfigurable transmitarray, aiming to achieve two - dimensional digital beam scanning while having the advantages of high gain and low profile. The following is the specific problem description in the paper: ### 1. **Limitations of Traditional Phased - Array Antennas** - **Complex Design**: Traditional phased - array antennas control the beam direction by adjusting the phase difference between each unit, but the design of their transceiver (T/R) modules is very complex and expensive. - **High Cost**: The design of phased - array antennas requires a complex phase - shifting network, which leads to an increase in cost. ### 2. **Limitations of Existing Reconfigurable Metasurfaces** - **Narrow Bandwidth**: Existing reflectarray designs usually have a narrow bandwidth and there are feed - shielding problems, which affect performance. - **High Loss**: The traditional Rx - Tx structure has large ohmic losses due to the electromagnetic energy being transmitted through guided waves, reducing the aperture efficiency. ### 3. **Objectives of This Research** - **Achieve Efficient and Low - Cost Beam Scanning**: The paper proposes a 1 - bit electronically reconfigurable transmitarray based on PIN diodes. By simplifying the design and reducing losses, it achieves efficient and low - cost beam scanning. - **Increase Gain and Aperture Efficiency**: By optimizing the unit structure, the design in the paper achieves a two - dimensional beam scan of ±45° in the C - band, with a maximum gain of 20.59 dBi and an aperture efficiency of 20.5%. ### 4. **Technical Innovation Points** - **Fabry - Pérot Resonant Cavity Structure**: Using orthogonal metal gratings to construct a structure similar to the Fabry - Pérot resonant cavity significantly improves the linear polarization conversion efficiency. - **Application of PIN Diodes**: By inserting two reverse - connected PIN diodes in the middle layer, a 180° phase shift is achieved, ensuring a linear phase response throughout the working bandwidth. - **Low - Loss Design**: By optimizing the feed lines and reducing ohmic losses, the transmission efficiency of the system is improved. ### 5. **Verification and Application** - **Experimental Verification**: The paper verifies a 16×16 transmitarray prototype through simulation and experiment, proving that it can achieve a two - dimensional beam scan of ±45°, and the experimental results are highly consistent with the simulation results. - **Potential for Practical Applications**: This design has significant advantages in advanced applications in fields such as radar and satellite communication, especially in scenarios where efficient beam scanning is required. In summary, through the innovative transmitarray design, this paper solves the limitations of traditional phased - array antennas and existing reconfigurable metasurfaces in beam scanning, providing an efficient, low - cost and superior - performance solution.
