Abstract:Considering the kinetic and fluid dynamic processes in the gain medium, a theoretical model is established to describe the mechanism of thermal-lensing effect in an exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser. The three-dimensional distribution of temperature and index of refraction in the gain medium are depicted. The effective focal length and radius of thermal lens are predicted. Our simulation results show the thermal lens plays a non-negligible role in high-power XPCsLs and can be significantly aggravated in higher wall temperature, buffer pressure and pump intensity. The divergence of laser beam influenced by thermal lens is also made in detail. This model is helpful for in-depth understanding of the thermal-lensing effect in XPALs.

Abstract:A theoretical model is established to describe the kinetic processes and laser mechanism for a nanosecond-pulse exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser (XPCsL). A new simulation method is proposed to solve a set of non-stationary rate equations considering high energy levels and the results of simulation are consistent with the experimental data. The effects of cell temperature, pump energy and buffer gas on the output laser pulses are presented and analyzed in detail, which reveal the unique properties of nanosecond-pulse XPCsL.

Abstract:Considering the effects of higher excited and ion energy states and utilizing the methodology in the fluid mechanics, a modified model of exciplex pumped alkali vapor lasers with sonic-level flowing gas is established. A comparison of output characters between subsonic flow and supersonic flow is made. In this model, higher excited and ion energy states are included as well, which modifies the analysis of the kinetic process and introduces larger heat loading in an operating CW exciplex-pumped alkali vapor laser. The results of our calculations predict that subsonic flow has an advantage over supersonic flow under the same fluid parameters, and stimulated emission in the supersonic flow would be quenched while the pump power reaching a threshold value of the fluid choking effect. However, by eliminating the influence of fluid characters, better thermal management and higher optical conversion efficiency can be obtained in supersonic flow. In addition, we make use of the “nozzle-diffuser” to build up the closed-circle flowing experimental device and gather some useful simulated results.
Investigation of Pump-to-seed Beam Matching on Output Features of Rb and Cs Vapor Laser Amplifiers

Abstract:Taking into account the beam radii of pump light and seed laser along the entire length of the cell and their intensities in the cross section, a physical model with ordinary differential equation methods for alkali vapor amplifiers is established. Applied to the reported optically pumped Rb and diode-pumped Cs vapor amplifiers, the model shows good agreement between the calculated and measured dependence of amplified power on the seed power. A larger width of the spontaneous emission region as compared to the widths of pump absorption and laser emission regions, which will result in very high energy losses, is observed in the cell. Influence of pump and seed beam waists on output performance is calculated, showing that the pump and seed beam should match each other not only in shape but also in size, thus an optimal combination of beam radii is very important for efficient operation of alkali vapor amplifiers. Abstract:Considering spectrally resolved absorption and temperature distribution, a physical model is established to describe the laser kinetic and thermodynamic processes of an exciplex pumped Rb vapor laser. A comparison with Carroll's model is made. Influences of pump intensity, temperature, reflectivity of output coupler, and number density of Kr on the performance of CW Rb-Kr XPAL with uniform temperature distribution are calculated and analyzed. Besides, with the heat accumulation considered, the temperature distribution was calculated, and the maximal optical-to-optical efficiency about 5.7% can be achieved at the condition of pump intensity I0 = 5.2 × 1010 W/m2 and flow velocity u = 250 m/s.

Abstract:On the basis of analysis of kinetic and thermodynamic processes of extremely high power CW exciplex pumped alkali vapor laser (XPAL), we establish a physical model to calculate and analyze 2-D and 3-D distributions of temperature as well as the intensity of laser beam in cavity with a different flowing velocity in the cell. Comparison between the simulated results of temperature distribution and laser characters of single-end and double-end scheme is drawn, demonstrating the advantages of double-end flow scheme, which actually means more homogeneous distributions of temperature and alkali atoms resulting in higher optical-optical efficiency. Enhancing pressure of argon to similar to 10 atm, with optimized pumped intensity of 2.54 x 10(5) W/cm(2) and optimized cavity length of 80 cm, we obtain more detailed simulated results of broadband pumped XPAL with four or five-level system.

Abstract:The pump-probe detection has been widely used to study ultrafast processes. The combination of pump-probe techniques and optical imaging enables the pump-probe transient imaging of micro/nano scale samples with high temporal and spatial resolution. In pump-probe detection, a pump beam is used to excite the sample, and a probe beam is used to measure the temporal and spatial distribution and transfer of the excited sample through linear or nonlinear optical effects. Different forms of transient pump-probe imaging methods have been developed, such as transient absorption microscope, transient interferometric scattering microscope and transient photothermal microscope, according to their principles. For material research, transient absorption microscopy, and transient interferometric scattering microscopy allow for the study of ultrafast physical processes at the femtosecond scale, providing guidance for the characterization and improvement of materials. For life science, transient absorption, and transient photothermal microscopy enable the study of the distribution of specific molecules at the cell scale in a non-destructive manner, and measure the distribution of physical quantities related to heat transfer in cells. This review briefly introduces the research advances and related prospects of pump-probe based transient imaging.

Abstract:A pump-probe experimental approach has been shown to be a very efficient tool for the observation and analysis of various laser matter interaction effects. In those setups, synchronized laser pulses are used to create an event (pump) and to simultaneously observe it (probe). In general, the physical effects that can be investigated with such an apparatus are restricted by the temporal resolution of the probe pulse and the observation window. The latter can be greatly extended by adjusting the pump-probe time delay under the assumption that the interaction process remains fairly reproducible. Unfortunately, this assumption becomes invalid in the case of high-repetition-rate ultrafast laser material processing, where the irradiation history strongly affects the ongoing interaction process. In this contribution, the authors present an extension of the pump-probe setup that allows to investigate transitional and dynamic effects present during ultrafast laser machining performed at high pulse repetition frequencies.

Abstract:By means of combining the transverse differential equation of pump intensity and the longitudinal differential equation of laser power, an optical model for transversely pumped diode-pumped alkali vapor lasers (DPALs) is established. The spatial distributions of both radius and intensities are considered in the model for pump and laser beams. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment ones as compared to the reported pulsed transversely pumped Cs DPALs. Influences of pump power, temperature, cell length, and beam waist on output performance are investigated, which suggests a set of parameters for efficient DPAL operation. In particular, the optimal ratio of the beam waist between the laser and pump beam is demonstrated to be 0.81, which can increase the laser power by 85% larger than the current experimental result.

Abstract:In high power laser systems, nonlinear effect, one of the key factors of beam wavefront aberration and even irreversible damage to system, has always been one of the top considerations of researchers for decades. A hybrid ray-tracing method for both linear media and nonlinear media based on geometric optics is presented in this paper and realized by programming. In a simple optic system with KDP crystal, an obvious decline of beam quality is observed in high laser power density conditions and a method taking component intervals as compensation of beam quality is proved feasible. Considering the complexity of traditional modeling method based on surfaces, a modeling method based on components is established. Hopefully, the conclusions and flaws of this paper can shed light on relevant work and further research.

Implementing Integrity Constraints in an Existing Belief Revision System

Abstract:SNePS is a mature knowledge representation, reasoning, and acting system that has long contained a belief revision subsystem, called SNeBR. SNeBR is triggered when an explicit contradiction is introduced into the SNePS belief space, either because of a user's new assertion, or because of a user's query. SNeBR then makes the user decide what belief to remove from the belief space in order to restore consistency, although it provides information to help the user in making that decision. We have recently added automatic belief revision to SNeBR, by which, under certain circumstances, SNeBR decides by itself which belief to remove, and then informs the user of the decision and its consequences. We have used the well-known belief revision integrity constraints as a guide in designing automatic belief revision, taking into account, however, that SNePS's belief space is not deductively closed, and that it would be infeasible to form the deductive closure in order to decide what belief to remove. This paper briefly describes SNeBR both before and after this revision, discusses how we adapted the integrity constraints for this purpose, and gives an example of the new SNeBR in action.

Abstract:Transient grating spectroscopy is a specialized application of the four-wave-mixing methodology and constitutes a versatile technique for investigating the dynamics of vibrational, magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom of matter in a background-free fashion. Recent developments in free-electron laser sources have enabled the extension of this technique into the Extreme Ultraviolet range. Ongoing efforts to expand transient grating spectroscopy into the X-ray regime promise numerous advantages: (1) substantial penetration depths that allow for probing bulk material properties, (2) element specificity via specific core-excited states, and (3) short wavelengths that allow for excitation gratings with higher momentum transfer and improved spatial resolution. In this study, we comprehensively outline the procedures for conducting X-ray transient grating pump/optical probe experiment. The process encompasses the design and alignment of the experimental setup, as well as the subsequent steps involved in data acquisition and analysis. This paper is intended as a comprehensive guide for researchers interested in implementing X-ray transient grating spectroscopy, providing valuable insights into the intricacies of the experimental workflow required for this novel technique. Furthermore, we discuss the potential for extending this methodology to an X-ray pump/X-ray probe scheme, envisioning a future direction that holds promise for enhancing the capabilities and scope of X-ray transient grating spectroscopy, opening new opportunities for studying ultrafast processes with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolutions.

Abstract:A new method is proposed for determining the mutual position of the focal planes of focusing elements and their spatial alignment along the laser beam propagation axis in the optical pump–probe scheme. The method is based on the effect of nonlinear absorption arising from the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with matter. The practical application of this method is demonstrated using the example of setting up an optical scheme for measuring the temporal shape of a terahertz pulse with the electro-optical gating method.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the ultrafast dynamic nonlinear mechanism of an Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity with femtosecond (fs) pumping by the transmission change of an incident signal pulse. The nonlinear effect simulated by a two-level system model can decrease the dielectric constant. Therefore, the temporally transmitted pulse is compressed owing to the faster phase velocity, and a sloped change in the transmission spectra is observed, which can be explained by the mechanism of pulse deformation. In addition, we stretched a certain part of the temporally transmitted pulse to further demonstrate the deformation of the pulse mechanism. This dynamic nonlinear mechanism based on the FP cavity can not only be used to design new optical devices with ultrafast response times, such as pulse modulators and passive amplifiers, but can also be easily constructed and integrated, which has great practical applications.

Abstract:Standard optical pump-probe methods analyze a system's temporal response to a laser pulse within sub-femtoseconds to several nanoseconds, constrained by the optical delay line's length. While resistance is a sensitive detector in various fields, its measurements are typically slow (>microseconds) due to stabilization requirements. We suggest here a time-resolved pump-probe technique which combines an optical pump pulse and a rectangular electrical probe pulse through the sample, measuring transmission in a 50 Ohm matched circuit with a digital oscilloscope. This allows electrically-driven delays from nanoseconds to seconds. Demonstrations include studying heat-induced changes in a thin amorphous VO$_x$ film and carrier relaxation in a CdS photoresistor, showcasing potential applications in heat transfer, biochemical reactions, and gradual electronic transformations.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-optical method that online produces “microstructured” targets by manipulating a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) prepulse. Besides the enhancement of the proton number, the cutoff energy is nearly doubled. Such transient “microstructured” targets are characterized using both offline and online approaches. Based on probe experiments and hydrodynamic simulations, we develop a simple model to describe the electron density distribution upon the arrival of the main pulse. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reveal that the annular plasma acts as an oscillating cavity for hot electrons and results in a cascaded acceleration effect. The combination of low-intensity LG prepulses and ultraintense Gaussian pulses opens another avenue for fine-tuning laser-plasma interactions spatiotemporally in interdisciplinary applications.

Abstract:By studying the theory of heat conduction, we established the transient heat conduction equation for a pulsed laser diode (LD) end pumped thulium doped laser. Combined with the actual working environment of a pulsed LD end pumped single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod, the expressions of transient temperature distribution and the time-varying thermal focal length were obtained by the integral transform method and the method of separation of variables. Under 240 mJ pump energy and repetition rates of 80, 90, and 100 Hz, thermal effects in the pulsed LD end pumped single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod were simulated, and the thermal lens focal length of the single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod was measured in experiments. The theoretical analysis was verified by the comparison between the theoretical results and the experimental results.

Abstract:We have derived a formula to study the effect of pump position on transverse modes of end-pumped solid-state lasers. From this formula an analytical expression relating the threshold power of the single TEMn,0-mode oscillation to the pump position can be obtained with suitable average pump size. The permissible limit to obtain single-transverse-mode operation can be also determined. Experimental results have shown a fairly good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
