Abstract:Introduction The impact of emotion on memory has been studied for decades. Specifically, the emotional enhancement of memory, including both the level of emotional arousal and/or valence, can improve encoding and recall (Kensinger & Corkin, 2003; McGaugh, 2018). Further research has also found memory recall to be congruent with one's mood, with depressed people likely to recall negative information over positive or neutral information (Denny & Hunt, 1992; Gaddy & Ingram, 2014). Finally, there is some research to suggest a relationship between types of emotion regulation and memory (Richards & Gross, 2006). It is important to consider these findings in the context of neuropsychological tests, as some tasks may be more emotionally valent and/or have a more negative connotation to them. One such test is the Wechsler Memory Scale - Fourth Edition (WMS-IV) Logical Memory (LM) Immediate Recall (IM), narrative memory task in which the to-be-remembered stories differ in terms of emotional valence, Story B having more negative valence than Story C. To date, however, no research has examined whether these stories are differentially remembered in older adult clinical groups marked by significant mood disturbance, namely major depression - the primary aim of this study. We hypothesize (1) there will be significant difference in performance on memory for Story B versus C in older adults with depression versus controls, reflecting attentional bias toward negative information, and (2) group differences in memory performance will correlate with differential use of emotion regulation strategies. Methods This constitutes a retrospective study of 94 older adults (54 female) ranging in age from 55 - 77 (mage = 64.72, SD = 6.46) and 12 to 20 years of education (medu = 16.28, SD = 2.30), who were part of a larger study examining depression in an older adult sample. Participants were coded into two groups: Healthy controls and remitted or actively depressed (mild and moderate in severity) based on a structured interview and scores on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). As part of a larger battery, all patients were administered the WMS-IV: LM and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). An omnibus ANOVA was performed to assess the effect of group on LM-IM performance, covarying for sex, age, education, and current depression symptom severity. The story administration order was not randomized. In order to examine relationships between emotion regulation and memory performance, a difference score was created (Story B - Story C), such that a positive score indicated better performance on Story B, and this was correlated with emotion regulation dimensions on the ERQ. Results There was no main effect of story [F(1,88) = 0.22, p = 0.64], though the more emotion-laden story (Story B) was better recalled in both groups. There was also no main effect of group [F(1, 88) = 2.07, p = 0.15], nor was there a significant group x story interaction[F(1,88) < 0.01, p = 0.97], meaning depressed patients did not preferentially recall Story B vs C relative to controls. Regarding emotion regulation, neither reappraisal (r = -0.12, p = 0.34) nor suppression (r = -0.19, p = 0.14) were significantly associated with differential performance across the two stories in the control group. Similarly, reappraisal (r = -.254, p = 0.124) was not significantly associated with differential performance across the two stories in the depressed group. However, the correlation with emotional suppression approached significance in the depressed group (r = 0.30, p = 0.07), suggesting greater use of emotional suppression was associated with better performance on Story B. Conclusions The current findings suggest that endogenous depression, in an older adult sample, does not differentially affect immediate recall of the two stories of the WMS-IV LM. Despite research indicating depression is typically associated with an attentional bias toward negative information, this did not translate to performance differences on this task. One caveat to this study is the use of an older adult sample, as it is possible that the positivity effect associated with aging (Mather & Carstensen, 2005) - i.e., preferential attention/memory for positive information - may have limited any potential differences in performance. Interestingly, there was systematically better performance, albeit nonsignificant, on the more emotionally valent story (Story B), regardless of group.
