Abstract:The far-zone spectrum of partially coherent light transmitted from a stratified medium was studied. The changes of the far-zone spectrum in the axial and paraxial points were analyzed in detail for the case of a Gaussian-Schell model beam transmitted from a nondispersive slab and a dispersive slab respectively. It was found that the transmitted spectrum may change in many different ways, such as red shifts, blue shifts, line narrowing and splitting into multiple lines. The effective bandwidth of the incident light and the dispersion of the transmitted medium have a strong influence on the transmitted spectrum in the far zone.
Non-Hermitian scattering symmetry revealed by diffusive channels

Abstract:The Hamiltonian interprets how the system evolves, while the scattering coefficients describe how the system responds to inputs. Recent studies on non-Hermitian physics have revealed many unconventional effects. However, in all cases, the non-Hermiticity such as material loss is only considered for the Hamiltonian, even when studying scattering properties. Another important component-the scattering channel, is always assumed to be lossless and time-reversal symmetric. This assumption hinders the exploration on the more general and fundamental properties of non-Hermitian scattering. Here, we identify a novel kind of scattering channel that obeys time-reversal anti-symmetry. Such diffusive scattering channels overturn the conventional understanding about scattering symmetry by linking the positive and negative frequencies. By probing non-Hermitian systems with the diffusive channels, we reveal a hidden anti-parity-time (APT) scattering symmetry, which is distinct from the APT symmetry of Hamiltonians studied before. The symmetric and symmetry broken scattering phases are observed for the first time as the collapse and revival of temperature oscillation. Our work highlights the overlooked role of scattering channels in the symmetry and phase transition of non-Hermitian systems, thereby gives the diffusion the new life as a signal carrier. Our findings can be utilized to the analysis and control of strongly dissipative phenomena such as heat transfer and charge diffusion.

Abstract:Wave dynamics in disordered open media is an intriguing topic, and has lately attracted a lot of attention in non-Hermitian physics, especially in photonics. In fact, spatial distributions of gain and loss elements are physically possible in the context of integrated photonic waveguide arrays. In particular, in these type of lattices, counter-intuitive quantized jumps along the propagation direction appear in the strong disorder limit (where all eigenstates are localized) and they have also been recently experimentally observed. We systematically study the non-Hermitian quasiperiodic Aubry-André-Harper model with on-site gain and loss distribution (NHAAH), with an emphasis on the spectral sensitivity based on pseudospectra analysis. Moreover, diffraction dynamics and the quantized jumps, as well as, the effect of saturable nonlinearity, are investigated in detail. Our study reveals the intricate relation between the nonlinearity and non-Hermiticity.

Abstract:The spectral degree of coherence of light wave on scattering from a collection of particles is discussed. It is shown that both the characteristic of each particle and the distribution of particles in the collection play roles in the spectral degree of coherence of the far-zone scattered field. Two special cases, i.e. a collection of random particles with determinate distribution and a collection of determinate particles with random distribution, are discussed, and the particle-induced coherence change and the distribution-induced coherence change are found in the scattered field.

Effect of spectral correlations on spectral switches in the diffraction of partially coherent light

Abstract:The subject is the spectral characteristics of partially coherent light whose spectral degree of coherence satisfies or violates the scaling law in diffraction by a circular aperture. Three kinds of spectral correlations of the incident light are considered. It is shown that no matter whether the partially coherent light satisfies or violates the scaling law, a spectral switch defined as a rapid transition of spectral shifts is always found in the diffraction field. Different spectral correlations of the incident field in the aperture result in different points at which the spectral switch occurs. With an increment in the correlations, the position at which the spectral switch takes place moves toward the point at which the phase of the center frequency component omega0 becomes singular for illumination by spatially fully coherent light. For light that satisfies the scaling law, the spectral switch is attributed to the diffraction-induced spectral changes; for partially coherent light that violates the scaling law, the spectral switch is attributed to both the diffraction-induced spectral changes and the correlation-induced spectral changes.

Abstract:A wide class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians can possess entirely real eigenvalues when they have parity-time (PT) symmetric potentials. Recently, this family of non-Hermitian systems has attracted considerable attention in diverse areas of physics due to their extraordinary properties, especially in optical systems based on solid-state materials, such as coupled gain–loss waveguides and microcavities. Considering the desired refractive index can be effectively manipulated through atomic coherence, it is important to realize such non-Hermitian optical potentials and further investigate their distinct properties in atomic systems. In this paper, we review the recent theoretical and experimental progress of non-Hermitian optics with coherently prepared multi-level atomic configurations. The realizations of (anti-) PT symmetry with different schemes have extensively demonstrated the special optical properties of non-Hermitian optical systems with atomic coherence.
Scattering Dynamics and Boundary States of a Non-Hermitian Dirac Equation

Abstract:We study a non-Hermitian variant of the (2+1)-dimensional Dirac wave equation, which hosts a real energy spectrum with pairwise-orthogonal eigenstates. In the spatially uniform case, the Hamiltonian's non-Hermitian symmetries allow its eigenstates to be mapped to a pair of Hermitian Dirac subsystems. When a wave is transmitted across an interface between two spatially uniform domains with different model parameters, an anomalous form of Klein tunneling can occur, whereby reflection is suppressed while the transmitted flux is substantially higher or lower than the incident flux. The interface can even function as a simultaneous laser and coherent perfect absorber. Remarkably, the violation of flux conservation occurs entirely at the interface, as no wave amplification or damping takes place in the bulk. Moreover, at energies within the Dirac mass gaps, the interface can support exponentially localized boundary states with real energies. These features of the continuum model can also be reproduced in non-Hermitian lattice models.

Manipulating spectral transitions and photonic transmission in a non-Hermitian optical system through nanoparticle perturbations

Abstract:In recent years, extensive research has been dedicated to the study of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, which involves the engineered balance of gain and loss in non-Hermitian optics. Complementary to $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the concept of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry has emerged as a natural framework for describing the dynamics of open systems with dissipations. In this letter, we study spectral transitions and photon transmission in a linear spinning resonator perturbed by nanoparticles. First, we demonstrate that by precisely manipulating the nanoparticle perturbations, the eigenvalues(or spectra) of a non-Hermitian system satisfying anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can transit to that of a quasi-closed Hermitian system. Second, we outline the essential conditions for constructing a quasi-closed system and analyze its dynamic behavior with respect to photon transmission. By adjusting the rotational angular velocity of the spinning resonator and the strength of the nanoparticle perturbations, the quasi-closed system enables a variety of photon distribution behaviors, which may have significant applications in quantum devices. Our findings offer valuable insights for the design of dissipative quantum devices under realistic conditions and for understanding their responses to external perturbations.

Electromagnetic Eigenvalue Problems and Nonhermitian Effects in Linear and Saturable Scattering

Abstract:In this thesis we address a series of new problems in non-hermitian optical scattering with increasing degrees of complexity. We develop the theory of reflectionless scattering modes, introducing a novel and broad class of impedance-matched eigenproblems: for a given structure, find the incident wavefronts and frequencies which are not partially reflected, but are instead transmitted through the scatterer, or dissipated within it. We analyze the relevant symmetry properties, and find that they support exceptional points (EPs) which can be directly probed with steady-state excitation. We study degenerate coherent perfect absorption (CPA EP), which is a specific example of the new kind of EP mentioned above. We show that the CPA EP is chiral in a ring resonator, and use this to design a resonator which predominantly absorbs or reflects light, depending on the direction of incidence. We extend CPA from cavities with a linear dielectric response to include the saturating nonlinearity and dispersion of a two-level absorbing medium. We show that the SALT algorithm in the single-mode regime can also be used to find the saturable CPA modes through a simple mapping. We also clarify the bad-cavity limit of dispersive but linear CPA, identifying new modes that are hybrids of the cavity and atomic degrees of freedom. We present and solve the general problem of scattering from an arbitrary cavity with a saturable two-level amplifying or absorbing medium, generalizing the known phenomenology of bistability that has mainly been studied in structures with little or no spatial complexity. We carefully analyze the validity of approximations used for isolated resonances, and find that the previously used inverse single-pole approximation requires some modification for the case of scattering.
Enhanced Robustness via Loss Engineering in Detuned Non-Hermitian Scattering Systems

Abstract:Non-Hermitian optics has revealed a series of counterintuitive phenomena with profound implications for sensing, lasing, and light manipulation. While the non-Hermiticity of Hamitonians is well-recognized, recent advancements in non-Hermitian physics have broadened to include scattering matrices, uncovering phenomena such as simultaneous lasing and coherent perfect absorption (CPA), reflectionless scattering modes (RSMs), and coherent chaos control. Despite these developments, the investigation has predominantly focused on static and symmetric configurations, leaving the dynamic properties of non-Hermitian scattering in detuned systems largely unexplored. Bridging this gap, we extend certain stationary non-Hermitian scattering phenomena to detuned systems. We delve into the interplay between bi-directional RSMs and RSM exceptional points (EPs), and elucidate the global existence conditions for RSMs under detuning. Moreover, we introduces a novel category of EPs, characterized by the coalescence of transmission peaks, emerging independent with the presence of Hamiltonian EPs. The transmission EPs (TEPs) exhibit flat-top lineshape and can be extended to a square-shaped spectrum when detuning is involved, accompanied by a distinctive phase transition. Significantly, we demonstrate the applications of the TEPs in a one-dimensional coupled cavity system, engineered to enhance sensing robustness against environmental instabilities such as laser frequency drifts, which can exceed 10 MHz. This capability represents a substantial improvement over traditional sensing methods and an important improvement of fragile EP sensors. Our findings not only contribute to the broader understanding of non-Hermitian scattering phenomena but also paves the way for future advancements in non-Hermitian sensing technologies.

Scattering of partially coherent anomalous hollow beams upon a random medium

Abstract:In this paper, partially coherent anomalous hollow beams scattering from a quasi-homogeneous medium with semisoft boundary is investigated for the first time, based on the accuracy of the first-order Born approximation. Analytical expressions for the scattering spectral density is derived and influence of parameters of the incident optical beam and the scattering medium on the far-zone scattered field is studied in detail. Numerical simulation results indicate that the spectral density distribution of the scattered field is significantly affected by the transverse coherence width of the incident beam, the eccentricity e of the incident beam , and the correlation length of the scatterer. The scattering spectral degree of coherence is affected by the effective radius , the correlation length , and the edge softness N of the scatterer. It is noteworthy that the far-zone scattered field is coherent at the center of the scattered field. Moreover, the center of the scattered spectral intensity distribution does not have an elliptical solid after being scattered by a quasi-homogeneous medium, which is different from the propagation characteristics of anomalous hollow beams in other media. The spectral intensity distribution and spectral coherence obtained through numerical simulation in this paper could further enrich the scattering theory, and find applications in optical trapping of particles, medical diagnosis and obtaining the structure information of a quasi-homogeneous medium.

Abstract:The interference of photons in a lossy beam splitter (BS) exhibits anticoalescence, which is surprising for bosons. Such a non-Hermitian system involving open quantum dynamics is of particular interest for quantum information processing and metrology. The Hermiticity of photonic devices is generally fixed according to the material, but is controllable at the interface of photons and atomic systems. Here, we demonstrate a tunable non-Hermitian BS for the interference between traveling photonic and localized magnonic modes. The crossover from a Hermitian to a non-Hermitian magnon-photon BS is achieved by controlling the coherent and incoherent interaction mediated by the excited levels of atoms, which is reconfigurable via the detuning of a control laser. A correlated interference pattern between the photons and magnons is demonstrated by such a non-Hermitian BS. Our system has the potential to operate with photons and magnons at the single-quanta level, and it provides a versatile quantum interface for studying the non-Hermitian quantum physics and parity-time symmetry.

Abstract:Scattering of fully coherent light from nano objects is a very matured field with plethora of applications. However, due to various fundamental and operational reasons, fluctuations in various characteristic features of interacting light fields cannot be fully suppressed. Such light fields with random fluctuating features are known as partially coherent light. When partially coherent light interact with nano-objects (i.e. solids or voids), new characteristics emerge (e.g. coherence vortex, fully-incoherent point-pairs) that are absent in fully coherent scattered fields. In this paper, we review the fundamental metrics for characterising partially coherent light and how such metrics can be used to reveal some of the hidden features of partially coherent light interacting with nano-objects.

Abstract:Within the validity of the first-order Born approximation, we study the spectrum changes generated by the scattering of light with a tunable spectral degree of coherence (SDOC) from a spatially deterministic medium. Before interacting with the medium, a scalar plane wave is incident upon Young's pinholes, which are employed to produce the incident wave with a tunable SDOC. By assuming that both the scattering potential of the medium and the spectrum of incident plane waves obey Gaussian profiles, the spectrum of the scattered field is derived as a linear combination of Fourier transforms of the scattering potentials. Changes in the spectrum of the scattered field are strongly dependent on the scattering angle, the effective radius of the medium, and Young's pinhole parameter. Moreover, red shifts occurring in the scattered field can be enhanced by either reducing the scattering angle or increasing the effective radius. The results presented here generalize the previous reports, where the light with prescribed functions of the SDOC scattered from a deterministic medium was considered.

Abstract:We study the compact localized scattering resonances of periodic and aperiodic chains of dipolar nanoparticles by combining the powerful Equitable Partition Theorem (EPT) of graph theory with the spectral dyadic Green's matrix formalism for the engineering of embedded quasi-modes in non-Hermitian open scattering systems in three spatial dimensions. We provide analytical and numerical design of the spectral properties of compact localized states in electromagnetically coupled chains and establish a connection with the distinctive behavior of Bound States in the Continuum. Our results extend the concept of compact localization to the scattering resonances of open systems with arbitrary aperiodic order beyond tight-binding models, and are relevant for the efficient design of novel photonic and plasmonic metamaterial architectures for enhanced light-matter interaction.

Abstract:A theory of refraction and reflection of partially coherent electromagnetic beams has been recently developed. In this paper, we apply it to study the change in spatial coherence caused by refraction and by reflection more fully. By considering a Gaussian Schell-model beam, we show that the change is, in general, dependent on the angle of incidence.

Abstract:Optical beam propagation in random media is characterized by familiar speckle patterns generated by intricate interference effects. Such patterns may be modified and possibly attenuated for partially coherent incident beam profiles. In the weak-coupling regime of the Itô-Schrödinger paraxial model of wave propagation, we show how the spatio-temporal statistics of the partially coherent beams interact with the statistics of the random medium to enhance or suppress scintillation effects.

Spectral coherence and time-domain transport of waves in random media

Abstract:An original approach is developed for the description of spectral coherence and time-domain transport of wave fields scattered in random media. This approach accounts explicitly for the correlation properties of the disorder and is universal with respect to the dimensionality of the system. Specifically, a two-frequency mutual coherence function is evaluated by using a procedure of embedding the initial Helmholtz equation into an auxiliary problem of a directed wave propagating in a higher-dimensional space. The resulting Schrödinger-like equation is solved perturbatively by means of a cumulant path integral technique. Mean intensity profiles and temporal moments of a narrowband wave packet scattered in a random medium are calculated by using the Fourier transformation of the coherence function. The theory describes the ballistic to diffusive transition in wave transport, and is consistent with experimental results. Since the coherence function is expressed via an arbitrary form power spectrum, the results obtained open a new avenue for studying wave transport in anisotropic and/or fractally correlated systems.
