Abstract:In their study, Varunesh Chandra and Sukumaran Sandeep, working at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, used model simulations to assess how reductions of polar sea ice affect the Indian summer monsoon, a key source of rainfall for much of South Asia. They find that both Arctic and Antarctic sea ice leads to a warming of tropical sea surface temperatures, leading to a weakening of the monsoonal circulation and a decrease in the associated rainfall over the Indian subcontinent. A sea-ice decline in Antarctica has a stronger effect on the Indian summer monsoon than that in the Arctic, highlighting the importance of the recent decrease in Antarctic sea-ice cover.
