Abstract:Abstract: Discussions of interart relations have often relied on a rhetoric of sexual perversion to reaffirm artistic borders, from G. E. Lessing's Laocoön (1766) to twentieth-century theories of medium specificity. This article considers the "perversity" of interart relations embedded in Lolita , Nabokov's novel of pedophilia. While the commingling of the arts is a key aspect of Nabokov's visual poetics, the logic of this principle is interrogated in Lolita . Whether perceiving Lolita as a visual image or imagining a mural of their sexual union, Humbert repeatedly attempts to transfigure his temporal narrative into the spatial realm of the visual as a means of preserving his "nymphet" from the corruption of time. This, I suggest, is analogous to Nabokov's own artistic efforts to escape the temporal progression imposed by sequential narrative form by appealing to the visual arts. By examining Lolita within the context of a long-standing discourse that sees relations between the sister arts as perverse, I argue that the novel's overt transgression of sexual taboos discloses an underlying aesthetic anxiety about the transgression of interart boundaries, in particular the novel's aspiration towards spatial form. Central to this is the novel's reworking of the Pygmalion myth, one of the foundational myths not only about artistic creation, but about the artist as a transgressive figure who violates aesthetic as well as erotic laws. The article ultimately concludes that, in Lolita , Nabokov revalorizes the sequential aspect of narrative (and the temporality of re-reading) as a positive attribute of novelistic form, not as something to be overcome in imitation of painting.

Abstract:Lolita has been under heated dispute over incest and pedophilia ever since its publication. The novel has been hence involved in the dispute of morality and non-morality. If interpreted from the perspeetive of ethics, Humbert, the protagonist, is fluctuating between degeneration, struggle and redemption on account of his violation of social ethics. Hence, Lolita is a fiction of Humbert＇s ethical struggle and Humbert＇s life is,in essence,an ethical tragedy instead of a moral tragedy.

Abstract:Using modern terms of morality to evaluate the sexual attitude of Humbert towards Lolita, which constitutes the central subject matter of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita (2005), most readers view the novel as erotica, a piece of literature that glamorizes amoral sexuality and rebels against humans' morality. This view feasibly condemns the sexual relationship between a forty-year-old male and a twelve-year-old girl-child nymphet; nevertheless, it overlooks the insistence of the novel's fictitious narrator and editor that the narrative is ethical and heavily loaded with pro morality messages. To resolve this perspectival dichotomy, this article revisits Humbert's love of Lolita contending that the relationship between Humbert and Lolita constitutes a form of courtly love, not rape or pedophilia. Relying on the medieval definition of courtly love, the article argues that Humbert is better viewed as a medieval lover whose love-based sexuality towards Lolita is ennobling and transcendent. By so doing, the article discharges Humbert’s love of Lolita from any modern connotations of animalistic carnality, thus maintaining the narrative’s obsessive involvement in the medieval culture.

Abstract:This article intends to construe a psychoanalytical reading about the women in the literary work Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov, published in 1955. The book is the autobiography of Humbert Humbert, 38, whose love object is a 12-year-old girl whom that he names as a nymphet. The narrator argues for the existence of two different female categories. The first would be attributed to adult women, named as palliative agents as permitted by the Law to have sexual relations with men. The second to diabolical nymphets, their true object of desire. Starting from a Freudolacanian reading about the feminine and supported by the philosopher Simone de Beauvoir’s studies on the categories of women’s social representation, this paper will return to the narrator Humbert Humbert, creator of such categories of the feminine, to investigate concept about fetishism. At the end of the work, we were able to realize that the discourse about female sexuality is constituted for the exclusive benefit of Humbert Humbert, who determines and enjoys the naming of women, that is, by talking about the feminine, the narrator helps us to produce a knowledge, in fact, about male sexuality.

Abstract:The article is devoted to ‘Nabokov’s imprint’ on several contemporary novels (K. E. Russell’s My Dark Vanessa , Lin Yi-Han’s Fang Si-Chi’s First Love Paradise , and V. Springora’s Consent: A Memoir of Stolen Adolescence ) that revisit the story of Lolita and relate it on behalf of the underage girl sexually abused by her teacher or tutor. The author explores the poetics of the novels and their emergence from feminist discourse and particularly the campaign against sexual harassment and rape culture that started in 2017 using the hashtag #MeToo. Detailed in P. Boyarkina’s study is the image of an unreliable narrator, brilliantly exploited by Nabokov, who teases his reader by letting them decide on the trustworthiness of the narrator’s story and where the author’s view ends and the narrator’s version begins. Modern novels tend to complicate things even further: the unreliable narrator successfully manipulates both the reader and the female protagonist who tells the story of love and abuse.

Abstract:The article explores the construction of the image of Lolita in the novel. Seemingly, the image of Lolita is a complete construct of Humbert’s narration. However, Nabokov’s way of composing the no vel allows certain empirics contributing to formation of Lolita’s image to escape the control of the narrator. In order to understand how Lolita’s image is constructed, it is necessary to analyze how Nabokov constructs Humbert’s narration about Lolita. Humbert’s narration contains certain hidden autonomous signs that diverge from visible dimension of his narration and modify the portrait of Lolita.

Abstract:Abstract In his "Confession of a White Widowed Male," Humbert Humbert, the fictional narrator of Nabokov's Lolita, writes: "I am not concerned with so-called 'sex' at all." In the context of a narrative that centers on his pedophilia, it is difficult to take this assertion seriously. Yet if we do, we come to appreciate that Humbert's sexuality is emblematic of a distinctly modernist response to the perennial question of how to counter temporal passage and the inevitable loss attendant on it. Nabokov's configuration of memory, consciousness, and time in Lolita shows how passage itself might be engaged in the creative enterprise of resisting loss.

Abstract:In the Memoir of Lolita,Nabokov chooses Humbert,the rapist,as the narrator to confuse and test the reader,and at the same time to let Humbert expose himself in his dramatic beautification of himself.One the one hand,the author deliberately makes Humbert indulged in the happiness and sorrow of his past,and mixes his narrating "I" and experiencing "I",thus giving the author an impression that Humbert has gained the moral sublimation by writing his so-called penitence.On the other,by making Humbert shift between the first person and the third person in his own narration,the author reveals the protagonist's narcissism and schizophrenia,thus offering the reader a chance to see through Humbert's deception and to interpret the memoir independently.

Abstract:“Lolita” written by Vladimir Nabokov has been considered as an important occasion in the history of world literature for its theme and concept of its characters. Humbert is one of the main characters in the novel “Lolita” with literary mission, serving to demonstrate several psychological and physiological problems, reflecting reasons and effects of various problems that were actual for the society during that time. Since “Lolita” was written during the period when postmodernism influence was observed in the works of Nabokov, it is very noticeable to find postmodern tendencies in the writer’s style and in his main character. While assessing Humbert in this context, author’s original approach becomes apparent due to some occasions which are caused by psychological and physiological problems. For this purpose, research on interpretation of Humbert’s stance showed that Humbert’s attitude towards Lolita and his controversial traits are presented in comparison with Freud psychoanalytic theory. Comparative analysis has showed that Humbert is a character who directly affects interpretation of characters and evaluation of events. It involves tendencies of that time and takes upon a mission to analyse existing wishes of human that can’t be openly expressed and to reveal threats that are triggered by those traits.

Abstract:Abstract The article contributes to the long-standing debate about Lolita’s final nine chapters by arguing for a much tighter connection than previously acknowledged between Nabokov’s most famous novel and Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu. Turning on the claim that Dolly’s alleged letter from Coalmont has a precedent in the Recherche, the essay proposes that Humbert fabricates the letter from Dolly for similar reasons that Proust’s Narrator makes himself believe that a telegram he receives from Gilberte is a missive from Albertine. The phantom letter in Lolita and the garbled telegram in the Recherche are psychologically therapeutic exercises in misreading and gestures toward paths not taken. But in Nabokov’s case, it is also an experiment in writing the kind of literary freedom he theorized in his 1941 lecture on drama titled “The Tragedy of Tragedy.” The article argues that Dolly’s potential vanishing act pays homage to the mercurial personalities that Nabokov encountered in Proust’s novel and the unconventional literary structures he admired in the works of Pushkin and Chekhov.

Abstract:Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov is an outstanding and productive Russian-Amercian writer. As the epitome work of the writer, Lolita must be the most controversial novel without doubt. This novel has been adapted into two versions of films: 1962 version and 1997 version. This paper will analyze the 1997 version of Lolita directed by Adrian Lyne. Most critics have mainly conducted the analysis of the film form the perspective of ethnics, postmodernism, narrative strategy, time as well as the image of death. However, there are few, if any, researches done from the perspective of literary ethics to dig into the relationships in the film. With the integration of ethics methods and literary research methods, literary ethics serves as a major new criticism approach and is mainly employed to conduct the analysis of literature. With the ethical factors unveiled in Lolita, this paper seeks to analyze three relationships: human beings and society, human beings and self, ethics and truth. The paper interprets the film Lolita from the perspective of literary ethics, explores the relationships in the film, exploits Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov’ s pursuit of truth, kindness and beauty, and also hopes to provide a new direction for later research on the film Lolita.
A decolonial analysis of Lolita dressing practice and fashion in Mainland China

Abstract:Based on ethnographic work performed in Chengdu, China, this article presents a decolonial analysis of Chinese Lolita dressing, criticising the unjustified accusations of catering to paedophilia and escapism. Lolita dressing is a clothing style originating from the Gothic clothing style of rebellious rock music singers in 1990s Japan. Some fashion studies and the mass media tend to place Lolita dressing in the context of a counter-public subculture narrative. However, such a framework is biased due to its Eurocentrism. Eurocentrism appears as origin-centrism in forming two unjustified accusations. The accusation of catering to paedophilia is formed based on its Euro-American etymological origin. The word ‘Lolita’ is inextricably associated with paedophilia in Western culture, which leads the general public, and mass media in particular, immediately to the discussion of Lolita dressing as being an abnormality. The accusation of escapism is based on its Japanese subcultural origin. Japanese Lolita dressing is an intentional refusal of the mainstream expectation of being an adult woman. This directs the discussion of Lolita dressing to youthful escapism from a disappointing reality. These two presumptions are problematic in Chinese Lolita dressing practices. Chinese Lolita dressing practitioners tend to integrate Lolita dresses into their ordinary life instead of using Lolita dresses as a medium to build an imagined identity. For Chinese Lolita dressing practitioners, Lolita dresses are neither abnormal nor counter-public. In short, Chinese Lolita dressing should be positioned as a fashionable clothing category among diverse clothing practices instead of as a subculture or an example of a counter-public rebellion.

Abstract:As a narrative masterpiece,Lolita uses the narrative technique of the first-person narration with an inside-view of the protagonist.The double narrator Humbert with his self-justified words arouses the readers' sympathy,confusing the moral judgment.Meanwhile,Nabokov employs the voice of the implied author to create an ironic effect.This indicates Lolita is not a literary work which gives up moral judgments willingly,but a complex one with multiple narrative effects.

Abstract:Abstract The main focus of this paper is on the narrative strategy used by fan writers in the process of interpretation of a modern classic. The research is based on the hypothesis that text-interpretation implements the existing yet implicit narrative lines of an original source. The discussion focuses on Vladimir Nabokov’s œuvre represented by the novel Lolita in amateur writers’ communities. The article’s hypothesis is that due to the existence of English and Russian versions of Lolita , fan texts in both corpora differ in the choice of linguistic means, but use similar narrative structures (Greimas). Whenever the narrative scheme is not oversimplified to resemble the model of a mass literature novel, it follows Humbert’s confession scheme in a way the character himself wants the fictional reader to perceive it. If the name of one of the actants is omitted or the two-actant model is expanded, the amateur text is close to the plot of the novel and its auto-citation structure. The novel, devoted to the story about an erroneous interpretation, is open to any mass-media adaptations. The original narrative strategy of Lolita is more exposed through the fan adaptations: the active reader is an obligatory participant in the artistic creation.
