Abstract:Being inspired by nature, a series of experiments was carried out to deposit a calcium oxalate layer on the surface of the stone by the reaction between carbonate rock and oxalate salt. To increase the anti-dissolution properties of the calcium oxalate layer, the use of mixed oxalate solution has been proposed in the literature by two main routes: (1) adding acid agent to ammonium oxalate, which has the advantage of changing the particle structure and reducing layer porosity, and (2) using neutral methyl oxalate solution, which has the advantage of surface coverage due to slowly hydrolysis. In this study, we investigated the sequential application of ammonium oxalate, methyl oxalate, neutral mixed, and calcium acetate acid mixed solution. With this method, calcium carbonate and calcium oxalate solution can react inside the stone to reinforce it. The protective film's coverage area can then be increased using dimethyl oxalate neutral mixed solution, and the crystal morphology can be modified with calcium oxalate acid mixed solution. The anti-dissolution properties of the coating were investigated using both a custom-designed apparatus and a selective outdoor environment. The coating displayed good acid resistance properties at pH 2–4. After one year of exposure, the coating is firmly bonded with the stone.

Abstract:The accelerated deterioration of carbonate stone artifacts under climate change has long been an urgent issue. Inspired by biomineralization, we developed carboxymethyl chitosan-diammonium hydrogen phosphate (CD) composite and investigated the conservation effectiveness of the CD composite compared to diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP) on limestone. The morphologies and microstructures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The consolidating effectiveness was investigated through a compressive strength test. The protective ability was assessed by disintegration resistance test, acid attack resistance test, salt attack resistance test, and freeze-thaw aging cycle test. SEM observations revealed that carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) served as an effective template, inducing the in situ formation of a uniform and continuous calcium phosphate coating on both the surface and interior of the stone. The tests indicated that the CD composite further enhanced the consolidating effectiveness and improved resistance to disintegration and freeze-thaw cycles. Notably, as an amphiphilic polyelectrolyte, CMCS functioned as a pH buffer and a protective barrier against sodium sulfate salts, which improved the resistance to acid and salt attacks. Additionally, the CD composite did not cause significant variations in the esthetic appearance or water vapor permeability. We then applied the CD composite at an actual carbonate stone cultural heritage site, successfully demonstrating the feasibility of CD application and the reversibility of CMCS in a real-world setting. Based on the study's results, our approach provides a new perspective for developing multifunctional and sustainable conservation materials for carbonate stone artifacts.
Development and Application of Cinnamaldehyde-Loaded Halloysite Nanotubes for the Conservation of Stone Cultural Heritage

Abstract:Essential oils and their active antimicrobial components are promising in controlling the biodeterioration of outdoor stone cultural heritage, but their high volatility, hydrophobicity, and sensitivity to light, heat, and oxygen limit their practical application. To overcome the limitations of essential oils in the conservation of outdoor stone cultural heritage, we developed a sustained release system based on halloysite nanotubes. Firstly, we acid-etched the halloysite nanotubes by 4 M HCl to increase their specific surface area and pore volume, which thereby enhanced the loading capacity of halloysite nanotubes. Then, as a model active ingredient (AI), cinnamaldehyde was loaded into acid-etched halloysite nanotubes by vacuum method. A series of experiments revealed that the cinnamaldehyde loaded into acid-etched halloysite nanotubes not only improved their thermal stability but also could be slowly released into the deionized water, following Fickian diffusion. Finally, the cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes were used in field experiments on Feilaifeng limestone. After a year of monitoring, the number of microorganisms on the limestone surface was greatly reduced after the treatment of cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes. The cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes showed great potential in controlling the biodeterioration of outdoor stone cultural heritage.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and sustainable antimicrobial materials is crucially important for built cultural heritage conservation. The synergic combination of hydrophilic ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), calcium phosphate oligomers (CPO), and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) exhibits distinctive properties, such as the chemical stability of ZnO NPs being enhanced with strong intermolecular interactions. Herein, an OSA/CPO/ZnO NPs composite has been prepared by embedding hydrophilic ZnO NPs and CPO into OSA molecules. The metastable CPO units bond with OSA molecules via electrostatic attraction between the positively charged calcium ions and negatively charged carboxyl groups and then gradually transform into ultrafine hydroxyapatite nanolines. In addition, the OSA/CPO/ZnO NPs composite shows different particle sizes and zeta potentials depending on the concentration of ZnO NPs in the dispersions. In vitro antimicrobial tests show that these composites have significant antimicrobial activity, inhibiting the growth of bacteria Escherichia coli and Micrococcus yunnanensis and fungus Aspergillus sp. F6. The application of the OSA/CPO/ZnO NPs composite as protective coatings on sandstone presents a potent and long-lasting antimicrobial activity and also has no significant effect on the aesthetic appearance, indicating a potential candidate for cultural heritage conservation.

Abstract:A novel calcium carbonate coating was prepared to conserve limestone relics with gypsum crust for the first time. In the preparing process, the solution of calcium hydroxy glycolate/urea was introduced into the gypsum crust and then transformed controllably into calcium carbonate when enough water was provided further. The gypsum crust was thus immersively coated by the newly produced calcium carbonate and protected from the damage of water erosion. The conservation effect of the immersive calcium carbonate coating was investigated by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), water erosion resistance, surface strength, surface hardness, color alteration, capillary water absorption and porosity test. The results revealed that the immersive calcium carbonate coating had excellent permeability, compatibility and water stability, and would be a new solution for conserving surface weathered stone relics.

Abstract:Surface gypsification is a common problem for calcium carbonate historic construction materials. In this paper, a calcium carbonate protective layer was prepared in gypsum substrate using alcohol solution of calcium hydroxy glycolate. The concentration and penetration depth of alcohol solution of calcium hydroxy glycolate are as high as 2.0 M and 18.0 mm, respectively, which guarantees the sufficient introduction of calcium precursor at single treatment. Additionally, after introducing into gypsum substrate, calcium hydroxy glycolate can be transformed into calcium carbonate layer in the open air only when water was introduced subsequently, indicating that the calcium hydroxy glycolate is completely controllable in application. The results of FT-IR, SEM-EDX, XRD, IC and conductivity demonstrate that the prepared stable calcite layer can prevent the gypsum substrate from water corrosion efficiently. This exploring study provides a new solution for the protection of surface gypsification carbonate materials in the ancient constructions and relics.

Abstract:A biomimetic film has been found on the surface of the historic stone buildings and monuments. The stone inscriptions under the film are preserved so well that has not been damaged for more than 1000 years. Samples of the crude film have been analyzed by XRD, FTIR, PLM, EDA, SEM and TEM. The results show that it consists mainly of calcium oxalate monohydrate. On the basis of the existence of the organism debris, it is concluded that the film should be a product of biomineralization. According to this hypothesis, a similar film has been prepared on the stone surface through biomimetic synthesis in our laboratory. The preliminary analysis shows that the artificial protective film functions well.

Abstract:The purpose of this work was to use different surfactants to deposit different crystalline calcium carbonate films on the surface of sandstone through a simple double displacement reaction. This was done to test the protective effects of calcium carbonate coatings based on water absorption, moisture permeability and weather resistance. Experimental results showed that the air permeability of the stone treated with vaterite calcium carbonate was reduced, but that this did not affect water vapor’s access into and out of the stone. Compared with untreated stone, the water absorption rate was reduced 0.5 times, and the weather resistance increased by 4 times due to small crystal grains, high solubility, and deep penetration hindering the erosion of water and soluble salts. These findings are expected to provide useful suggestions for the protection of stone cultural heritage.

Abstract:Understanding evolution of microstructure and surface morphology is essential for studying the strength of building material in acidic enviorment. In this study, the microstructure of limestone samples immersed in acidic solutions of varying pH values was evaluated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the joint surface morphology evolution process was determined by three-dimensional (3D) scanning experiments. Further, direct shear tests on the immersed jointed samples were conducted for shear properties analysis. It is found that the pore size distribution gradually changes from nanopore to micropore with the decrease in pH value, while the single pore area and perimeter increased and the fractal dimension decreased. Therefore, the increased pore distribution, enlarging in area, and change in the shape of the pores altered the microstructure and caused the increase in porosity. Also, with the decrease in pH value, the decrease rate of 3D relative fluctuation height, angle, and 3D area ratio increase. The 3D average fluctuation angle decreases the most, whereas the 3D area ratio decreases the least. In an acidic environment, the 3D surface morphology is significantly influenced by the 3D average fluctuation angle, which eventually changes joint roughness. Under the condition of acidic underground water, the microstructure of the joint wall and surface morphology of the joint degraded, thereby affecting the joint shear behavior. Therefore, the degradation of joint roughness coefficient and joint wall compressive strength should be considered for evaluating the joint mechanical properties in an acidic environment.
Bioinspired preparation of a protective biomineralized material on the surfaces of historic stones

Abstract:The conservation of historic stones is a crucial and arduous task. Now, stone conservation is primarily achieved through surface treatments by the use of organic materials, but the protective effects do not satisfy the protectors. So it has been focused on to develop new materials or methods. In this paper, we have prepared a new protective material by a bioinspired method, in which chondroitin sulfate was selected as a controlling template and the supersaturated solution of calcium oxalate as a stock solution, and the processing parameters was optimized through orthogonal experiments. The structure and microtopography of protective materials have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), which indicate that the stone substrate is coated by a film of calcium oxalate about 100 nm thick. Moreover, its protective performances have also been evaluated by its abilities to resist water, soil and acid. The analyses reveal that the protective effects of the film are favorable. The method for stone conservation by biomimetic approach should develop a category of new protective methods or ideas.
Biomimetic Fluorapatite Films for Conservation of Historic Calcareous Stones

Abstract:Fluorapatite protective films were prepared on marble substrates using a biomimetic method. By mimicking the mineralization mechanism of enamel, phosphorus and fluorine were introduced on the surface of the marble substrate. In the presence of a biological template, namely collagen, an integrated fluorapatite film was produced and the marble substrate was entirely covered. The prepared fluorapatite films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. The performances of the fluorapatite films were evaluated by color changes, capillary water absorption, and acid resistance tests. The results revealed that the fluorapatite films had good compatibility with the marble substrate; the physical properties such as color and capillary water adsorption of the marble substrates were unchanged. The fluorapatite films also had good acid resistance and were stable even in heavy acid rain.

Abstract:The conservation of historic stones is receiving growing attention from many fields because of increasing bad weathering. In this work, a protective nanofilm of CaC2O4 has been prepared on the marble stone by using a solution of (NH4)2C2O4, propyl alcohol and acetone as the precursor. The obtained material was characterized by XRD, FTIR, PLM and SEM. The protective performances were also evaluated by its ability to resist soil and acid. The analysis reveals that the protective effects are satisfying.
Preparation, characterization and application of fluorinated acrylate copolymer emulsion for the conservation of stone building heritages in Putuo Zongcheng Temple, China

Abstract:Abstract Recently, the stone building heritages in Putuo Zongcheng Temple are experiencing a certain degree of weathering damage, which mainly manifests in the blistering, fissuring, flaking and detachment of the carved balustrades of stone bridge, the footings of wall, the front paws and pedestals of stone lions. To prevent the deterioration of the stone building heritages, the fluorinated acrylate copolymer emulsion was successfully prepared with ethyl metrhacrylate, n-butyl acrylate and 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate as monomers. The structure and surface morphology characteristics of this copolymer were described the Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The FTIR spectra confirms that the adopted monomers have been involved in during the copolymer polymerization process. The SEM images reveal that the surface of the prepared copolymer is obviously more dense, compact and smooth than the porous structure of stone building heritages. The ageing resistance of the copolymer was quantitatively studied by the ultraviolet aging test, the contact angle and imbibition spontaneous tests were adopted to estimate the wettability alteration of the copolymer emulsion for the stone samples. Results show that the mass loss rate of the prepared copolymer increases rapidly and then tends to be stable when irradiated by ultraviolet light. And the fluorinated copolymer with 16.65% HFMA content possesses the optimal ageing resistance and the superb hydrophobicity. The contact angles of the coated stone samples range from 91.90 o to 119.80 o , which are all larger than 18.80 o -69.05 o of the un-coated samples. Similarly, the spontaneous imbibition test also ensures that, both the maximum water absorption capacity and the imbibition equilibrium time of the samples treated by this copolymer emulsion are lesser. Considering the influence of water on rock weathering, the fluorinated copolymer emulsion coating is an potential method to avoid the degrading of stone building heritages, because it depresses the infiltration of water and then avoids or weakens the dissolution effect, salt crystallization, water absorption swelling and freeze-thaw weathering.

Abstract:To prevent the weathering deterioration of stone building heritages in Putuo Zongcheng Temple, the fluorinated acrylate copolymer was prepared with methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate as monomers. The structure and surface morphology of the copolymer were described by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The antiaging of the copolymer was studied by the ultraviolet aging test; the contact angle and imbibition spontaneous tests were performed to estimate the wettability alteration of the copolymer emulsion. Results show that the fluorinated copolymer with 32.54 % HFMA content possesses optimal aging resistance and superb hydrophobicity. The contact angles of coated samples range from 96.90° to 125.80°. Considering the influence of water on rock weathering, the fluorinated copolymer coating is a potential method to avoid the degrading of stone heritages.

A Novel Protection Method for Carbonate Stone Artifacts with Gypsum Weathering Crusts

Abstract:An innovative method using a methanol solution of barium hydroxide-urea as a protective agent was investigated for the conservation of stone artifacts with harmful gypsum weathering crusts. In this method, the methanol solution of barium hydroxide-urea and water were introduced into the gypsum crust in sequence by surface spraying. By doing so, the harmful gypsum crust is directly converted into a barium sulfate—calcium carbonate composite protective layer. The properties of the composite layer were characterized by SEM-EDX, XRD, ATR-FTIR, IC, water solubility, wetting angle, color difference, open porosity, capillary water absorption, and surface hardness. The results of the morphological and composition characterization (SEM-EDX, XRD, ATR-FTIR) indicate that the added urea can promote the carbonization reaction effectively. In addition, the methanol solution of barium hydroxide-urea can penetrate deep into the gypsum crust. The results of the physical properties characterization denote that the water stability of the specimens was significantly increased after the protection treatment; an approximate ten-fold stronger water resistance ability was achieved. Meanwhile, the intrinsic physical properties of gypsum crust, such as pore structure and original appearance, could basically be maintained. The presented conservative method has high facility and controllability and satisfying conservation effect, which means it has potential in the conservation of surface weathering carbonate stone artifacts.

Protection of carbonate stone by biomimetic chitosan/silica composite films

Abstract:A chitosan/silica composite film was prepared on carbonate stone by biomimetic synthesis technology. During preparation,the surfactant cetytrimethylammonium bromide was used as a template on a natural stone slab, and chitosan was used to control the formation of silica particles on the stone surface.The protective performances of the film were evaluated,and its structure and microtopography were analyzed by ATR-FTIR and FESEM.The results show that the chitosan/silica composite film has good acid resistivity and resistance to soiling.The freeze/thawing properties and resistance to heat deterioration were also improved by the film,while the hygroscopic property and the gas permeability of the stone were preserved.The CS/SiO_2 composite film overcomes the problem of the single layer SiO_2 film which cracks.The CS/SiO_2 film can attach tightly to the substrate.The film is very thin and has no effect on the appearance of the natural stone.All these indicate that it is a material with good prospects for carbonate stone conversation.

Abstract:One of the most important factors of carbonate stone decay is the chemical attack caused by atmospheric pollutants,such as acid rain.Simulated acid rain was used to evaluate two commercial fluoro-organosilane(Pelicoat and Mellerud) for the protection of carbonate stone unearthed from six dynasties carved stones in Nanjing city.The results showed that the protective efficiency and hydrophobic ability became lower with the corrosion time increased.The surface analysis of the stone samples,by SEM,showed some change in superficial morphology after 8 h acid corrosion,i.e network pores on the surface of stones.

Abstract:The preparation of continuous hydroxyapatite film on stone is a promising method of protecting marble from erosion. However, many methods negatively affect the calcium in the substrate and forming of struvite on the dolomite surface, leading to a heterogeneous coating and low efficiency. In this study, a continuous hydroxyapatite coating on dolomitic marble was achieved from graphene enhanced Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles as the calcium precursor using the sol-gel method. The morphology and the structure of the film was evaluated by a field emission scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), an optical microscope, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and analytical techniques. Moreover, the color and the contact angle measurements, as well as the simulated acid rain test and freeze–thaw treatment, were performed to assess the chromatic aberration, hydrophilicity, reliability, and durability of the coating. A suppositional combination model among hydroxyapatite, graphene quantum dots, and dolomite were suggested based on structural similarities between the support material and components of the functional coating. The integrality and efficiency of the hydroxyapatite film was improved by compositing with graphene quantum dots.

EFFECTS OF CONTINUOUS PASSIVE MOTION ON LOWER EXTREMITY HYPERTONIA IN CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Statistics showed that 70 to 80 percent of patients with cerebral palsy have spastic clinical feature, and the affected limbs often demonstrated muscular hypertonia and abnormal gait [1]. To avoid musculoskeletal deformities and improve gait characteristics in children with cerebral palsy, managing muscular hyperactivity is an important treatment goal. Recently researchers have found decrement of muscle hypertonia after continuous passive motion (CPM) treatment in patient with stroke and spinal cord injuries [2, 3]. Similar to stroke and spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy was also characterized with upper motor neuron lesion. However to date, no such application has been applied to children with cerebral palsy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of CPM on lower extremity hyperonia in children with cerebral palsy. We hypothesized a decrease in muscle hypertonia and an improvement in ambulatory function could be found following CPM intervention.

Abstract:The conservation of historic stone sculptures and buildings is a focus of research. But there are no completely satisfying protective materials until now. In this paper, a conservative film of apatite has been prepared on the surface-modified marble stone by using a solution of CaCl2 and (NH4)2HPO4 as the precursor through a biomimetic method. The prepared material was characterized by some instruments. Its performances were also evaluated by its ability to consolidate, resist soil and acid. The obtained results indicate that the conservative effects are satisfying and the biomimetic synthesis should represent a new prospective in stone conservation.
