Abstract:In this manuscript, we highlight a new phenomenon of complex algebraic singularity formation for solutions of a large class of genuinely nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). We start from a unique Cauchy datum, which is holomorphic ramified around the smooth locus and is sufficiently singular. Then, we expect the existence of a solution which should be holomorphic ramified around the singular locus S defined by the vanishing of the discriminant of an algebraic equation. Notice, moreover, that the monodromy of the Cauchy datum is Abelian, whereas one of the solutions is non-Abelian. Moreover, the singular locus S depends on the Cauchy datum in contrast to the Leray principle (stated for linear problems only). This phenomenon is due to the fact that the PDE is genuinely nonlinear and that the Cauchy datum is sufficiently singular. First, we investigate the case of the inviscid Burgers equation. Later, we state a general conjecture that describes the expected phenomenon. We view this Conjecture as a working programme allowing us to develop interesting new Mathematics. We also state another Conjecture 2, which is a particular case of the general Conjecture but keeps all the flavour and difficulty of the subject. Then, we propose a new algorithm with a map F such that a fixed point of F would give a solution to the problem associated with Conjecture 2. Then, we perform convincing, elaborate numerical tests that suggest that a Banach norm should exist for which the mapping F should be a contraction so that the solution (with the above specific algebraic structure) should be unique. This work is a continuation of Leichtnam (1993).

Abstract:We investigate the existence of local holomorphic solutions $Y$ of linear partial differential equations in three complex variables whose coefficients are singular along an analytic variety $\Theta$ in $\mathbb{C}^{2}$. The coefficients are written as linear combinations of powers of a solution $X$ of some first order nonlinear partial differential equation following an idea we have initiated in a previous work \cite{mast}. The solutions $Y$ are shown to develop singularities along $\Theta$ with estimates of exponential type depending on the growth's rate of $X$ near the singular variety. We construct these solutions with the help of series of functions with infinitely many variables which involve derivatives of all orders of $X$ in one variable. Convergence and bounds estimates of these series are studied using a majorant series method which leads to an auxiliary functional equation that contains differential operators in infinitely many variables. Using a fixed point argument, we show that these functional equations actually have solutions in some Banach spaces of formal power series.

More general operators and oblique derivative boundary conditions will be also considered.

Abstract:We investigate the quantitative uniqueness of solutions to parabolic equations with lower order terms on compact smooth manifolds. Quantitative uniqueness is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize quantitative uniqueness by the rate of vanishing. We can obtain the vanishing order of solutions by $C^{1, 1}$ norm of the potential functions, as well as the $L^\infty$ norm of the coefficient functions. Some quantitative Carleman estimates and three cylinder inequalities are established.

Abstract:By introducing a new classification of the growth rate of exponential functions, singular solutions for semilinear elliptic equations in 2-dimensions with exponential nonlinearities are constructed. The strategy is to introduce a model nonlinearity which admits an explicit singular solution. Then, using a transformation as in [8], one obtains an approximate singular solution, and then one concludes by a suitable fixed point argument. Our method covers a wide class of nonlinearities in a unified way. As a special case, our result contains a pioneering contribution by Ibrahim--Kikuchi--Nakanishi--Wei [15] for the Moser--Trudinger type nonlinearity.

Abstract:In parabolic or hyperbolic PDEs, solutions which remain uniformly bounded for all real times $t=r\in\mathbb{R}$ are often called PDE entire or eternal. For example, consider the quadratic parabolic PDE \begin{equation*} \label{*} w_t=w_{xx}+6w^2-\lambda, \tag{*} \end{equation*} for $0<x<\tfrac{1}{2}$, under Neumann boundary conditions. By its gradient-like structure, all real eternal non-equilibrium orbits $\Gamma(r)$ of \eqref{*} are heteroclinic among equilibria $w=W_n(x)$. All nontrivial real $W_n$ are rescaled and properly translated real-valued Weierstrass elliptic functions with Morse index $i(W_n)=n$. We show that the complex time extensions $\Gamma(r+\mathrm{i}s)$, of analytic real heteroclinic orbits towards $W_0=-\sqrt{\lambda/6}$, are not complex entire. For example, consider the time-reversible complex-valued solution $\psi(s)$ of the nonlinear and nonconservative quadratic Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} \label{**} \mathrm{i}\psi_s=\psi_{xx}+6\psi^2-\lambda \tag{**} \end{equation*} with real initial condition $\psi_0=\Gamma(r_0)$. Then there exist $r_0$ such that $\psi(s)$ blows up at some finite real times $\pm s^*$. Abstractly, our results are formulated in the setting of analytic semigroups. They are based on Poincaré non-resonance of unstable eigenvalues at equilibria $W_n$, near pitchfork bifurcation. Technically, we have to except a discrete set of $\lambda>0$, and are currently limited to unstable dimensions $n\leq22$, or to fast unstable manifolds of dimensions $d<1+\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}n$.

Abstract:We study positive solutions of an equation with singular nonlinearities. The equation arises in the study of equilibrium states of thin films. Under weak assumptions on the nonlinearity, we show that for N >= 3 there exists a family of radial solutions {u(alpha)}(alpha>0) with u(alpha)(0) = alpha and each of them is oscillatory in ( 0, infinity). We obtain then a singular radial solution in ( 0, infinity) by taking the limit alpha --> 0. Meanwhile, using the solutions obtained in ( 0, infinity), we show some existence results for the corresponding Neumann eigenvalue problem on a ball.

Abstract:We study a boundary value elliptic problem having a lower order nonlinear term with subquadratic growth in the gradient of the solution and possibly singular when the solution vanishes. If the singularity is mild enough (and even in the absence of the singularity), we prove an existence and multiplicity result. On the contrary, we prove an existence and uniqueness result for strong singularities.

Abstract:We prove the existence of radial self-similar singular solutions for the mass supercritical Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation far from the critical regime and, more generally, branches of such solutions for the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation. We are also able to control their monotone index (number of monotone intervals). In particular, we prove the existence of monotone radial self-similar singular solutions for the cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation. The paper combines sharp analytic bounds of the solutions at infinity with computer assisted bounds for the solutions around zero and their matching at an intermediate value.

Abstract:This paper deals with a pseudo-parabolic p -Laplacian equation involving singular potential. Firstly, we determine the existence and uniqueness of weak solution in the Sobolev spaces by using Galerkin methods and some priori estimates. Secondly, in the frame of variational methods, we classify the blow-up and the global existence of weak solutions by covering all kinds of initial energy. Moreover, we obtain the upper bounds of blow-up time for all cases. The results of this paper extend the ones in Lian et al. J Differ Equ 269:4914–4959, 2020.

Abstract:This article sets forth results on the existence, non-existence, uniqueness, and regularities properties, as well as boundary behavior of solutions for singular systems involving mixed local and non-local elliptic operators (see System (S) below). More precisely, we first establish a new weak comparison principle for a singular equation. Afterward, we discuss the non-existence of positive classical solutions, as well as construct suitable ordered pairs of sub-solutions and super-solutions. This allows us to obtain the existence of a pair of positive weak solutions for System (S) by employing Schauder's fixed-point theorem in the associated conical shell. Finally, we adapt a method of Krasnoselsky to establish the uniqueness of such a positive pair of solutions.

Abstract:Results of investigation of the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problems for a quasi-linear parabolic equation with a small parameter at a higher derivative near singular points of limit solutions are presented. Interest to the problem under consideration is explained by its applications to a wide class of physical systems and probabilistic processes such as acoustic waves in fluid and gas, hydrodynamical turbulence and nonlinear diffusion. The following cases are considered: a singularity generated by a jump discontinuity of the initial function, collision of two shock waves, gradient catastrophe, transition of a weak discontinuity into a shock wave, a singularity generated by a large initial gradient.

Abstract:This text surveys cohomological properties of pairs $(U,f)$ consisting of a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $U$ together with a regular function on~it. On the one hand, one tries to mimic the case of a germ of holomorphic function in its Milnor ball and, on the other hand, one takes advantage of the algebraicity of~$U$ and $f$ to apply technique of algebraic geometry, in particular Hodge theory. The monodromy properties are expressed by means of tools provided by the theory of linear differential equations, by mimicking the Stokes phenomenon. In the case of tame functions on smooth affine varieties, which is an algebraic analogue of that of a holomorphic function with an isolated critical point, the theory simplifies much and the formulation of the results are nicer. Examples of such tame functions are exhibited.

Remarks on the Complex Euler Equations

Abstract:We consider a complexification of the Euler equations introduced by Šverák which conserves energy. We prove that these complex Euler equations are nonlinearly ill-posed below analytic regularity and, moreover, we exhibit solutions which lose analyticity in finite time. Our examples are complex shear flows and, hence, one-dimensional. This motivates us to consider fully nonlinear systems in one spatial dimension which are non-hyperbolic near a constant equilibrium. We prove nonlinear ill-posedness and finite-time singularity for these models. Our approach is to construct an infinite-dimensional unstable manifold to capture the high frequency instability at the nonlinear level.
